Abstract
Mosul Dam is an earth fill dam located on the Tigris River, approximately 40 km (25 mi) northwest of Mosul, Iraq. The construction of the dam was completed in 1984. It is one of the largest multipurpose dams in the Middle East, and the largest dam in Iraq.
The dam provides flood control, irrigation, power generation and water supply. At 113 m (371 ft) high and 3.65 km (2.3 mi) long, the reservoir has a storage capacity of 11.1 billion m3 (392 billion ft3) of water. The main hydroelectric power station has four turbines for an installed capacity of 750 MW. The discharge system includes two bottom-outlet tunnels of 10 m (33 ft) diameter, a five-gate service spillway and an emergency fuse plug spillway.
