Abstract
The Crown Building, built circa 1921, is a 26-story iconic building located at West 57th Street and Fifth
Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. The paper highlights collaboration between the geotechnical engineer
and foundation contractor to develop economical and practical solutions to foundation design and
construction challenges associated with this complex redevelopment project. The project includes both
below-grade and above-grade expansion of the occupied building, and required undermining the existing
foundations, and essentially doubling the foundation loads. The below-grade expansion required surgical
foundation work including drilling minicaissons, shoring columns, underpinning, and excavating 20 feet of
rock.
