Abstract

India plans to increase the nuclear power share in overall energy-mix to about 30% by 2032 using both indigenous and imported reactor technologies. In the immediate time-frame, it is envisaged to generate 10000 MW electricity by PHWR technology by 2020 using indigenous uranium resources. This necessitates setting-up of new uranium mills and augmenting the existing resource, mining and milling capacities. This paper describes the current status and future R & D needs towards achieving the targeted demand of yellow-cake. Keywords: uranium, hydrometallurgy, leaching, yellow cake
