Abstract
Although surfactants have proven to increase metal extraction by improving solution flow
in porous media, these reagents have not been widely adopted in heap leaching operations
because of potential incompatibilities with downstream processes that are subject to
surface properties. The BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, was previously found to have no
significant effect on post-leach operations. This study evaluated its performance in ores of
different particle size distributions and the impact on acid consumption and metal
recovery. Column leach studies, carried out on a copper oxide ore and mixed oxide–sulfide
ore, showed that the effect of LixTRA 118 was more pronounced in ores with wider particle
size distributions than in those with more uniformly sized particles. Solution percolation
rates increased by up to 18% in the presence of leaching aid, and increased copper recovery
and acid consumption. Improved wetting facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at macroand
micropore level. There was no significant effect on iron recovery
