Abstract
Rock particle sizes were measured at fourteen steep-slope Appalachian coal mines during production blasting. The distribution of rock sizes shows the effects of inter-hole timing, sequence of hole initiation, as well as charge distribution within each shot. Blast design parameters were selected to: (1) minimize displacement of broken rock conforming to throw control required of mining methods, (2) minimize seismic effects, and (3) create breakage at a cost economical to mining operations.
