Abstract

Through the cooperation of the Pennsylvania Department of Mines the writer obtained from State, records detailed information concerning coal-mine accidents occurring in Pennsylvania bituminous mines during 1939, particularly those nonfatal accidents in which the injured person lost 60 or more days? time from mark. The writer wishes to acknowledge assistance received from Pennsylvania State officials, especially Richard Maize, secretary of mines, and. Joseph J, Walsh, deputy secretary of mines; also to Thomas Dickinson,3/ of the Bureau of Mines, who rendered valuable assistance in assembling the data an the several tables.
