Abstract

The city of Huntington Beach is a coastal community along the Pacific Ocean in Southern California with a series of intracoastal flood channels that run through densely populated residential areas. The Huntington Beach Channel and Talbert Channel Sheet Pile Repair Project was designed to improve flood protection for surrounding Huntington Beach communities. The project consisted of installing over 16,000 linear feet of new steel sheet piles adjacent to existing steel sheet piles that line the sides of both flood control channels. This paper studies the unique project dynamics and constraints, and highlights the capabilities of the press-in piling method for sheet pile installation.
