Abstract

Reduce the noise radiated by the auger miner cutting head (typically 105 dBA at the face) by 10 dBA without compromising the durability or productivity of the tool. Approach Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to identify the noise sources of auger miners with emphasis on the cutting head and coal cutting process. The overall noise level generated by the coal cutting process was found to depend greatly upon the structural characteristics of the auger cutting head.
