Abstract

The Chagres Smelter was the first in Chile to follow environmental regulations to control sulfur dioxide emissions. Because of this, the operation and development plans have had to incorporate environmental planning as part of its policies for almost three decades. The present article shows the development of the environmental standards applied to its operations, investments and operational improvements carried out to meet the regulations and improve competitiveness. Results to-date and future plans are outlined, as well as their impact on operations and the environment.
