The Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme in South Africa with an operating head of 500m is located in sedimentary rocks containing relatively weak argillaceous strata. The paper describes design and construction aspects of the high pressure concrete-lined tunnels, and the associated investigation techniques and construction controls.
