Abstract
Provide a method of detecting and locating miners trapped underground following a mine disaster. Approach Develop a surface deployed system which senses the vibrations caused by a trapped miner pounding on the roof of the mine and effectively determines the miner's location. How It Works If trapped underground, a miner would strike the roof of the mine with any implement at his disposal. This pounding causes vibrations in the ground which are transmitted to the surface where they are sensed by receiving transducers called geophones. Multiple geophones are positioned together for noise cancellation purposes in a form called a subarray. Seven
