Abstract

Mineral processing of rare-earth ore from the Dong Pao deposit, Vietnam, was investigated. The ore contained bastnaesite, (REE (rare earth element)) CO3F, as the valuable mineral and barite, quartz, and fluorite as gangue. To establish a mineral processing flowchart, selective comminution, size classification, and magnetic separation were tested. Bastnaesite shows brittle properties and selective comminution was applied to improve the purity of products. The crushed products were classified by decantation, and the overflow product showed high purity of bastnaesite indicating that bastnaesite becomes fines by crushing and that selective crushing can be used to concentrate the bastnaesite. Magnetic separation for the sink product was carried out and the mag-product showed high recovery rates of bastnaesite, indicating that the combination of size classification and magnetic separation is effective.
