Abstract
A 24,300 tonnes per year state of the art Silicon smelter is being constructed for Barrack Silicon Pty Ltd at Kemerton, 20 kilometres north of the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The plant is designed for the reduction of high purity quartzite lump to metallic silicon in two 27MVa Demag submerged arc electric furnaces. The primary reductant, a high purity charcoal, will be manufactured at the plant from locally sourced jarrah wood waste (Eucalyptus Marginata). Commercial silicon production is scheduled to commence in October 1989. Keywords: Silicon, Smelter, Quartzite, Furnace, Charcoal, Jarrah, Wood, Eucalyptus Marginata.
