Abstract

Although the literature indicated that a hydrogen-ated coal bitumen might be used as a substitute for petroleum asphalt and road tar, no work could be found in which the material was actually used or evaluated as a road binder.' Therefore, a study was initiated to investigate the production and properties of a road binder made by hydrogenating coal in the presence of a solvent at elevated temperatures and pressures.
