Abstract
In recent years, the chain-style trencher has been proven a valuable tool for installing vertical walls on
challenging sites where conventional methods may be less desirable. Like many tools, trenchers are most
effective when used with the right application. Trenchers are commonly used for applications that could
also be completed with conventional slurry trenching; low-permeability cutoff walls, collection trenches
and permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). Drawing from a wealth of experience with conventional slurry
trenching and the trencher, this paper compares and contrasts the technical considerations, treatability,
installation, performance, and lessons learned for recent projects.
