A TERNIUM Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, tem em sua operação dois Altos-Fornos idênticos. Ambos iniciaram operação em 2010, Alto-Forno 01 em 13/07/2010 e Alto-Forno 02 em 06/12/2010. Em Dezembro de 2016 e Janeiro de 2017 ocorreu alguns eventos de rompimento de conjunto de sopro por temperatura alta ocasionando paradas emergências nos Altos-Fornos, perdas de produção e instabilidade operacional. Diante deste problema, a antecipação de possíveis falhas no conjunto de sopro por temperatura alta foi fundamental para garantir operação estável dos altos-fornos. Analisar o processo, verificar procedimentos, pesquisar e aplicar novos materiais para adequar as condições operacionais é essencial para evitar o rompimento de conjunto de sopro por temperatura alta e elevar vida útil dos mesmos.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar parafusos Classe 8.8 produzidos por 4 fabricantes nacionais. Para tanto, realizou-se caracterização mecânico-metalúrgica, baseando se nas normas ABNT NBR ISO 724: 2004 [3] e DIN EN ISO 898-1: 1999 [2]. O estudo de caracterização mecânica consistiu na realização de perfis de microdureza, ensaio de tração, MEV da superfície fraturada e medição dos perfis dos parafusos. A caracterização metalúrgica seguiu através de análise química e caracterização metalográfica (macrografias e micrografias). Está caracterização é de fundamental importância para verificar as variabilidades devido aos diferentes fabricantes as quais este componente está sujeito e compreender como elas podem vir a influenciar no desempenho deste produto.

A filtragem vertical no processo de mineração representa a etapa final de beneficiamento do minério de ferro, pois o material proveniente das etapas anteriores chega em forma de polpa até os filtros verticais a vácuo que por sua vez tem a função de retirar a umidade do material, reduzindo a níveis aceitáveis de forma a propiciar a estocagem do produto no pátio de armazenamento. Este trabalho aborda o uso de análise estatística empregado no processo de filtragem da usina de Conceição I para redução da umidade no pellet feed.

The Marangoni effect is an important phenomenon where a surface tension gradient drives liquid towards high surface tension regions. Temperature gradient, evaporation, disparity of viscosity, and surface roughness and topography are all significant factors that can affect this thermo-capillary migration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of micro-groove patterns on the migration of paraffin oil, and obtain a well-designed texture of micro-grooves to prevent the thermo-capillary migration. Patterns of micro-grooves with differing orientations and geometric parameters were fabricated on the surface of SUS 316 stainless steel substrates. Experiments on the migration behavior with different viscosities of paraffin oils were carried out various temperature gradients. The experimental phenomena indicated that the surface with the micro-grooves perpendicular or parallel to the temperature gradient have a strong impact on the migration performance of paraffin oil. Micro-grooves perpendicular to the temperature gradient exhibited extraordinary slower migration velocity than that of the parallel one. Width and depth of micro-grooves had an obvious influence on the behavior of temperature-driven migration and detail discussions on the effects of these geometric parameters were carried out.

Este estudo trata da metodologia de projeto de tratamento térmico para pinos J. O pino J funciona como fusível mecânico do obturador de produção de petróleo e deve romper numa determinada faixa de carga de cisalhamento, a fim de que não haja excesso de tração no obturador. Foram feitas análise química, análise da intensidade de tensões devida à forma do pino, ensaios de dureza e ensaios de cisalhamento. O estudo foi eficiente para determinar o adequado tratamento térmico a fim de garantir a tensão de cisalhamento estipulada no projeto do pino.

When advanced high strength steel (AHSS) is rolled at a high reduction ratio, the forward slip ratio in cold rolling tends to be lower than that of the other softer strips such as low-carbon steels, and the work roll sometimes skids the strip. To identify why forward slip ratio of AHSS at a high reduction ratio becomes smaller than that of low-carbon steel, the relationship between the reduction ratio and forward slip ratio was investigated by a rolling experiment. For this trial, a 4Hi laboratory cold mill was used. AHSS and low-carbon steel coils were rolled by two different rolls that were set to 0.3 and 0.6 μmRa to create two types of friction conditions. Furthermore, the rolling conditions were numerically analyzed to determine the influence of friction coefficient and flow stress on the relationship between forward slip ratio and reduction ratio. The experimental investigation and numerical analysis revealed that the forward slip ratio reduced with increasing rolling reduction ratio in a low friction state; contrarily, it increased with increasing rolling reduction ratio in a high friction state. This feature was clearly visible when harder materials were rolled.

The premature failure of copper staves in the lower stack and bosh is frequently the cause for an interim blast furnace repair at great cost to the blast furnace owner. Protective accretions may form on the stave hot face, but when these accretions are lost the staves can begin to deteriorate both due to abrasive wear from exposure to the descending burden materials and due to thermal cracking from exposure to hightemperature process excursions. These mechanisms can lead to failure of cooling passages, which forces blast furnace operators to shut off these channels, accelerating the rate of copper stave wear. Finger cooler technology was developed to extend blast furnace life by restoring cooling to damaged staves. Evidence for their effectiveness is presented herein in the form of experimental test work and conjugate heat transfer (CHT) analysis carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. These tests demonstrate that under typical blast furnace excursion conditions, a stave fitted with finger coolers will undergo half the temperature rise of a stave fitted with conventional cigar coolers.

Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) is used in this study to manufacture Al-based nano-composites. Ultrasonic cavitation plays an important role in refining the microstructure, dispersing the nanoparticles and breaking up clusters of nanoparticles. In this paper, 6061/A356 alloys and Al2O3/SiC nanoparticles are used as the matrix alloys and the reinforcements, respectively. The nanoparticles were inserted into the molten alloy and dispersed by ultrasonic cavitation and acoustic streaming. A previously developed multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was used to study the cavitation and the nanodispersion phenomena during ultrasonic processing of these alloys. A comparison between the mechanical properties of the as-cast 6061 and 356 alloys and nano-composites has been performed.

Impinging water jets promote high heat flux extraction rate. Steel industry widely employs the process for accurate temperature control to improve the microstructure and to ensure adequate mechanical properties. The range of surface temperatures, heat fluxes and cooling rates are very large, which makes it important to obtain an accurate value of the heat transfer coefficient. This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of the heat transfer behavior of a high temperature (450°C - 900°C) steel plate cooled by a water jet at 20°C to 70°C. High-speed imaging (up to 20,000 fps) within water jet impingement zone allowed the characterization of the boiling regimes in the early stages of cooling. The effects of initial temperature, water jet temperature and velocity on the heat transfer coefficient were analyzed by inverse heat conduction method that predicts the heat flux and temperature on the top surface from temperatures measured with thermocouples inserted in test plate. Heat transfer is strongly affected by the initial temperature of the hot steel, water jet temperature and, less intensely, by jet velocity. High cooling rates start when liquid water is in direct contact with surface temperatures above 700°C.The results will contribute to the enhancement of the temperature cooling control on the runout table and cooling model employed at Usiminas Hot Strip Mill.

An alternative cooling curve analysis method focused on the experimental determination of the latent heat of phase changes and phase transformation kinetics is proposed in this work. The method analyses the cooling process of a metallic sample, initially liquid that is contained into a cylindrical metallic mold, both of known weight, thermally isolated at its top and bottom. The method is based on an energy balance associated with the experimental measurement of the temperature change of the sample and the mold during their cooling process. From the numerical processing of the cooling curves, are obtained approximate values of the acting global heat transfer coefficient as a function of temperature in order to describe quantitatively the energy exchange of the metal/mold system with its surroundings. These relationships and other experimental data are used to process the cooling curve of the sample and the mold during solidification, in order to obtain the latent heat of solidification.The method was applied experimentally to zinc and tin of commercial purity, initially liquids and contained into stainless steel molds in order to determine its ability to measure the latent heat of solidification. The obtained results suggests that this method shows a good potential to characterize the solidification of metals.

The modern composite materials, especially those reinforced with synthetic fibers such as glass and carbon, have been used since last century to attend the demands required by most technological fields, from home appliances to aerospace. Natural fibers composites with biodegradable polymer matrices are considered environmentally friendly materials and currently accepted as possible substitutes for synthetic composites. These green composites can be safely discarded or composted at the end of their life without harm to the environment. Another alternative for synthetic composites is to apply natural lignocellulosic fibers as reinforcement of conventional polymer matrices and already used in the automobile industry. In addition to the environmental and societal advantages of the green composites, the lignocellulosic fiber reinforced conventional polymer composite also has economical and technical advantages. In the case of a fiber collected as a waste, the price of the composite can be considerably lower than “fiberglass”. Furthermore, with high strength lignocellulosic fibers such as sisal, ramie and malva the specific strength of a composite may approach that of “fiberglass”. Therefore the objective of the present work is to investigate the mechanical behavior of polymer matrix composites reinforced with high volumes of natural malva fibers subjected to tensile stresses.

Spraying Systems Co® has continued to develop and evolve descale nozzles through the years. The most recent addition to the descale nozzle line, the DescaleJet® Pro, provides more impact and a more uniform distribution than previous descale nozzles. The improved performance has been achieved through multiple design changes such as a smoother approach, updated vane design and improved carbide orifice. In addition to providing improved spray performance the nozzle also lasts longer than previous versions. The new technology has been thoroughly tested in the lab using impact measurements and accelerated wear testing. In addition to lab testing the nozzle has provided improved performance and longer wear life for those that have made the change to the new technology. The new nozzle technology and the benefits to the rolling mill will be discussed.

The study of oxidation behavior of High Chromium Steel material used for surface layer of work rolls was carried out. Specimens taken directly from the roll were subjected to thermal fatigue in the temperature range between room temperature and 500 °C up to 700 °C by using thermo-mechanical simulator Gleeble 1500D. Our observation was focused on the impact of oxidation as a principal mechanism of degradation of the roll’s surface layer - mainly on the characteristics of oxidation propagation in relation to the test temperature and microstructure constituents characteristics of the material. Oxidation is considerably accelerated by certain characteristics of eutectic and primary carbides, i.e. their size (area), composition, morphology, orientation regarding to the water-cooled surface, etc. In the presented paper selected cases where emphasized oxidation takes place are investigated, analyzed and explained. Obtained results thus represent a contribution to explanation of conditions which lead to acceleration of oxidation behavior that in turn can lead to chipping or even early spalling of material from the roll surface layer.

The Gerdau Ouro Branco Mill, three years after the implementation of its new plate mill, has started to develop high complexity products. The plate mill’s learning curve has been increasingly challenging since products are being developed to their highest grades. This work aims to present the first results of the development of steels of the strength class of 510 MPa produced by TMCP (Thermomechanical Controlled Processing) followed by accelerated cooling. These results show the potential and advantage of the accelerated cooling process regarding to obtain products of high mechanical strength and high toughness, associated with a low equivalent carbon.
