São comparadas as propriedades mecânicas: limite de escoamento, resistência à tração, elongamento à rotura, elongamento uniforme, relação escoamento/tração), a análise química, testes especiais como fadiga e adherência e outros ítens. Tambén é tida em conta a evolução dos quesitos das normas ao longo do tempo. O foco é o comportamento anti seismo do vergalhão.

Government regulations around the world concerning environmental care are becoming more stringent, also including regulations and restrictions of depositing and use of dust, sludge and slag generated in the iron and steelmaking process. With this scenario, by-products such as iron containing dust, sludge, oxide fines, mill scales and slag, become a valuable resource and recycling may be a profitable activity within a plant. Up to ten percent in mass of the total steel output of dust, sludge and mill scale by-product materials and more than 40% of slag by product are generated within an integrated steel plant with an iron content ranging from 50% to 65% for fines and up to 25% for BOF-slag. Slags are being widely recycled and used in the cement industry, as is the case for BF slag, and in the construction industry in the case of BOF slags and EAF slags. However, value of BOF unmodified slag is typically low and environmental regulations limit the usage of the unmodified BOF slag. This paper describes innovative solutions for recycling of fines using cold briquetting technology and the modification and granulation of slag from steelmaking that increase the value of the by-product and yield a marketable product.

Em coquerias, o período compreendido entre o início de operação até a desativação devido final de vida útil é relativamente longo. Torna-se tarefa muito difícil determinar-se o tempo exato de desativação por degradação uma vez que as coquerias possuem muitos fornos tipo batelada e o grau individual de degradação varia de acordo com as condições operacionais e método de preservação aplicados. Apesar dos cuidados adotados na operação e manutenção das coquerias, torna-se inevitável um desgaste inexorável em suas estruturas com o passar dos anos, com progressivo decréscimo na capacidade eficaz de produção até a sua paralisação. Tendo em vista o elevado custo envolvido na construção de novas coquerias, torna-se prioridade para as siderúrgicas prolongarem ao máximo a vida útil das baterias existentes, adotando o tipo de reparo adequado a cada fase da vida da bateria. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de descrever os tipos de reparo em baterias de coque disponíveis, visando restaurar as estruturas e recuperar a capacidade produtiva das coquerias, respeitando as normas ambientais vigentes.

A competitive landscape pressurizes the steel producers business, zero defect requirements from customers forces the operators for additional efforts in process control and quality management. The so called quality related cost, which include also rework, cost for downgrading or even scabbing of material is already a remarkable lever in a plants profitability breakdown. The introduction of advanced state of the art grades in the product portfolio requires already a budgeting for the expenses for R&D and quality management. PQA has been developed as a process and quality management software solution next to existing level 2 or level 3 automation systems. It is focusing on the analysis of process data, equipment information, in line quality measurement devices and trend analysis to obtain an answer whether the process is according to definition and expectation and whether the intermediate or final product can be shipped for further processing as prime material. Advanced analytics which are linked to an expert know how based configuration identifies deficiencies in the production and processing process. An intelligent, state of the art quality rating system evaluates tolerable deviations. PQA comprises the software platform including the database, data configurator and collector from the different sources in the production process and units. The core element of the platform is the knowledge based expert know how package defining process and quality determining fundamentals. The paper describes the structure of the software package, it gives insights on the expert know how package, process and quality evaluation and points out the customer benefits, cost reduction, improvement yield, customer satisfaction increase. Cargas a granel, incluindo finos de minério de ferro, devem ser embarcadas de acordo com as diretrizes acordadas entre os membros da Organização Marítima Internacional (IMO). Uma medida de segurança crítica é o Limite de Umidade Transportável (TML), exigido para cargas do Grupo A (cargas que têm tendência à liquefação). Diversos acidentes com navios envolvendo finos de minério de ferro da India, cuja causa suspeita-se ser a liquefação da carga, trouxeram à atenção o tema do TML de finos de minério de ferro. Um trabalho extenso de pesquisa foi desenvolvido pelos principais produtores de minério de ferro da Austrália e do Brasil para dar suporte à IMO no desenvolvimento de normas para o embarque desse tipo de material. Com essa finalidade, mineradoras patrocinaram o projeto AMIRA P1097, que foi conduzido pela TUNRA Bulk Solids (TBS) e o Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology (CBSPT), CSIRO e a Universidade de Auckland, com a gestão do projeto sendo feita pela Creative Process Innovation, a fim de estabelecer uma abordagem modificada de testes de TML específica para finos de minério de ferro. Esse estudo deu suporte aos resultados dos testes e conclusões do Technical Working Group do IMO, que publicou suas conclusões e descobertas em Setembro de 2013.

Juntas soldadas são regiões críticas quanto a fraturas. Neste estudo foi analisada a tenacidade à fratura de soldas de reparo de tubos de mastros de sonda de perfuração de petróleo. Foram escolhidos os tubos principais de sustentação dos mastros. Seções do mastro são corriqueiramente reparados por soldagem TIG de raiz e preenchimento por eletrodo revestido. Estes processos provocam modificações metalúrgicas na zona termicamente afetada da solda, o que pode ter reflexo na tenacidade à fratura dos tubos. Foram produzidos corpos de prova para medir a tenacidade à fratura do metal base e da zona afetada termicamente. Os resultados indicaram que não houve redução de tenacidade a fratura devido as alterações microestruturais da zona afetada e isto foi associado ao procedimento de soldagem multipasses utilizado.

This property has been studied to characterize the strength a metallic material exhibits when it is machined so it can be regarded as its typical behaviour. As such, it may even be considered as an intrinsic material property. It is usually measured by an index called Coppini index, which is expressed by the ratio between the removed mass of a cutting tool caused by wear when it is used for machining and its initial one for a certain set of machining parameters. In this investigation, the tests were therefore conducted by an established set of parameters, namely feed rate, cutting and depth rates, in which the same wear mechanism took place in both ferrous alloys: AISI 4140 and AISI 316 steels. They were chosen based upon their increasing ordinary machinability indexes. The initial and final mass of the cutting tool were measured by an analytical scale with 0.01 mg precision. Cylindrical rods of 50-mm diameter were machined and the CI indexes showed a remarkable difference between them: 0.080 for the first steel and 0.049 for the second one, i.e., AISI 316 steel presented better machinability than the first one. It was then possible to conclude that this method presents good results in terms of both reproducibility and adequacy for machine shop conditions and it may be applied in a foreseeable future, mainly for metallic materials that have rather low machinability indices.

As fibras lignocelulósicas representam vantagens econômicas, técnicas e ambientais em comparação com as fibras sintéticas, como fibra de vidro por exemplo, quando se considera as alternativas de reforço aos compósitos. A fibra natural usada no presente trabalho é a fibra de eucalipto, que é largamente cultivada em território brasileiro. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar uma análise estatística da correlação entre o diâmetro e a densidade da fibra de eucalipto. Para isso, foi aplicado o método de Weibull. O diâmetro foi obtido por meio de medições em projetor de perfil, enquanto a densidade utilizou determinações precisas da massa e do volume de fibras. Os resultados revelaram uma dependência inversa entre o diâmetro da fibra de eucalipto e sua densidade

The development of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) is motivated by the automotive industry demands for higher strength steels with better formability and stretch-flangeability to avoid fractures during parts forming. In response to this, the new steel grades must have special microstructures in terms of constitution, morphology, distribution and hardness, which are strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the steel sheet and its processing, especially in the continuous annealing stage, in the case of cold rolled sheets. In this study the influence of the annealing heating rate and intercritical temperature (IT) on the microstructural evolution and the final hole expansion ratio of a cold rolled 980 MPa AHSS grade was evaluated. The annealing process was simulated using a Dilatometer and a Gleeble machine, and the microstructures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and nanohardness measurements. The increase of heating rate resulted in an overlap between ferrite recrystallization and austenite formation, changing the austenite morphology from a random to a fibrous distribution, while a higher IT resulted in more homogeneous microstructures and higher hole expansion ratios. This microestructural homogeneity, confirmed by nanohardness measurements, suggested that the difference in hardness between ferrite and the second phase affects the micro-void formation and crack propagation during the hole expansion test.

Microalloyed steels have been intensely studied as an alternative to increase strength by grain refinement and/or precipitation hardening. Long steel products have a wide range of opportunities to apply well-defined principles of controlled rolling (CR) in order to increase strength and toughness with reduced costs. To evaluate the effect of microalloying elements as Nb and Ti with thermomechanical treatment, three conditions were tested: DIN 16MnCrS5 with hot rolling (HR), DIN 16MnCrS5 with Nb and CR and DIN 16MnCrS5 with Nb+Ti and CR. Austenitic grain size, obtained by direct quenching after rolling, has shown a decrease 32% with Nb addition, and 29% when Nb and Ti was added. Controlled rolling generated higher grain refinement and pancacked grains near the surface. When comparing ferritic grain size, controlled rolling plus niobium and titanium additions resulted in significant reduction of 35%. Yield strength increased 15% with microalloying and CR and more than 270% in impact toughness, even at -40°C.

The performance requirements for modern steelmaking facilities are ever more stringent, as customers and markets are continuously pushing for technologies which allow having high quality steel produced in an economic and sustainable way. In the details, this paper has the aim to present the excellent results obtained by integrated steel plant where an EAF is fed with high quality hot ENERGIRON DRI. The recent technology developments, combined with the affirmed basic process design, contributed to further maximize the energy of the DRI, reaching the EAF at temperatures above 600°C with a carbon content up to 3.5%, as confirmed by plant data. These improved input material characteristics resulted in reduced electrical energy consumption and increased liquid steel production.

Interest in X-80 linepipe steels emerged in the early 1980’s and it was first used in 1985 by Ruhr Gas [1]. The early steels were extensions of conventional Nb-V or Nb-Mo microalloyed X-70 steels but other alloying concepts emerged based on Nb-Mo-B alloying (NKSTAF [2] and ULCB [3]). The latter had acicular ferrite/bainitic microstructures and carbon contents below 0.05 percent. In parallel renewed interest developed in ultra low carbon (0.02 percent) higher niobium steels which had first been studied in 1962 [4]. Such steels exhibited excellent notch toughness when processed with high finish rolling temperatures (>950°C) which made them suitable for processing on weak, older rolling mills. With time such steels, designated “High Temperature Processed”, or HTP steels, were further optimized and produced in modern, very strong rolling mills due to their superior economy compared with traditional vanadium and molybdenum containing steels. The chronology of the HTP development is presented in the present paper. Full scale demonstration heats of a 0.06 percent carbon 0.10 percent niobium steel were produced by Bofors Steel Plant in 1972 and were converted from slabs to plates by nine different steel mills [5-7]. Commercial application in API Grade X-70 first occurred in Canada in 1974 [8,9] but the concept was only used sporadically after that until 1998 when it was applied for the API Grade X-70 Sour Service Cantarell Project [10] in Mexico. Soon thereafter, the El Paso Cheyenne Plains Project used a 0.05%C 0.095%Nb 0.27%Cr variant of the HTP steel [10-12]. Nowadays the HTP concept is being utilized for construction of approximately 6000 km of 48” OD x 18.4 mm X-80 per year in China. The metallurgical principles and history of the development are presented in details in this paper.

AISI 410 martensitic stainless steel specimens were low temperature plasma nitrided at 400°C in a mixture of 75%N2:25%H2, during 20 h. Active screen technic was used to avoid any edge effect The nitrided case is composed of expanded martensite (a’N) and e-Fe3N iron nitride, whilst chromium nitride precipitation was avoided. Surface hardness reached 1275 HV0.01. The transverse microhardness profile shows a gentle hardness gradient with a NHT nitrided case depth of 28 µm. Nanoindentation tests were carried out in order to assess the hardness (H), the Young modulus (E), the H/E and H3/E2 ratios and the elastic recovery (We) of both nitrided and non-nitrided specimens. The cavitation erosion mass losses were measured as a function of exposure time. The results showed a decrease of 27 times of the mass loss compared to the non-nitride specimens. Wear rate decreased from 2.56 mg/h for the non-nitrided condition to 0.085 mg/h after nitriding. The increment in the elastic recovery and the higher hardness values are responsible for the greater cavitation erosion resistance exhibited by the expanded martensite. Such results showed that low temperature plasma nitriding and the formation of expanded martensite are effective to increase cavitation erosion resistance of AISI 410 stainless steel.

Finite element method (FEM) is widely used to model the hot strip rolling process. Flatness defects e.g. front-end bending in multipass hot strip rolling is studied by authors using a finite element (FE) model with interactively operating automated controlling logic (ACL) [1]. However, industrial corresponding grade of accuracy in strip thickness subsequent to the rolling pass is not easily accessible in FE-model without separate calculation of significant rolling parameters and integrated roll gap control. In order to study flatness defects and optimize pass schedules the controlling and physics of the FE-model must correspond to the industrial process. For this need the automated controlling logic is upgraded by setup calculations to predicting roll force and work roll flattening. These predictions are utilized in setup positioning of a work rolls. Reliable setup calculation enables smooth multi stand rolling process without significant additional adjustment of roll gap clearance. State of art rolling technology requires above-mentioned setup controlling for the FE simulations to simulate different pass schedules without time consuming preparations. Operational setup calculations together with automated controlling logic of hot strip rolling enable simulation of new pass schedules and efficient problem solving.

A Aceros Arequipa é a maior siderúrgica do Peru. A empresa opera uma planta em Pisco, com uma aciaria para 850.000 t anuais de aço líquido, e uma capacidade de laminação de 1.250.000 t anuais de produtos longos. Um projeto de integração vertical incluindo coqueria non-recovery, sinterização e alto-forno foi considerado. Como parte do projeto, um forno piloto de coqueificação foi instalado, com o intuito de testar carvões próprios e importados e obter a máxima participação de carvão local nas misturas. Foram testados sez carvões peruanos e antracito. Os carvões importados escolhidos foram três da Colômbia e quatro dos Estados Unidos. Levando em conta as baixas propriedades dos carvões próprios, foi introduzida a estampagem da carga. A máxima participação dos carvões locais, mantendo a qualidade requerida, foi obtida com 80% de carvão peruano, e 20% de um carvão columbiano. Pode-se usar até 10% de antracito, junto a 60% de carvão peruano e 30% de carvão colombiano.

In this article, influences of restraint and MgO content on densification of alumina-magnesia castable during heating were experimentally studied. High thermal expansion-alumina-magnesia castable specimens were surrounded by low thermal expansion-alumina-silica castables, and heated in an electric furnace. Doing so allows restrained heating of alumina-magnesia castable. According to the results of simple calculations, the restraint stresses were estimated to be between 2 to 20 MPa, so the experimental conditions were considered reasonable. As a result of the experiments, it was verified that restraint densifies alumina-magnesia castable, resulting in an increase in modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. The densification effect of restraint became larger as the MgO content increased. The effects are attributable to an in-situ spinel forming reaction, which improves corrosion resistance.Taking the temperature distribution in the castable lining into account, large restraint stress is expected for the hot face while only a little effect is expected for back end. Thus, excessive difference in material property in the thickness direction, which is undesirable in terms of structural spalling, is a concern.Hence, the MgO content of alumina-magnesia castable should be determined carefully, taking not only corrosion resistance but also spalling resistance into consideration.

This report gives in the first part the metallurgical basics for the production of AHSS grades in integrated steel plants starting at the melt shop and ending at the annealing lines of the cold mill. The corresponding process and plant technologies in each production step with its specifics and rules are explained. In the second part by way of example the practical requirements for TRIP 780 steel grade are highlighted like a recipe for process control in the steel plant, hot and cold rolling mill, annealing line and finally skin pass mill. Measuring of mechanical technological properties on samples shows that the specifications according to DIN EN 10268 are fulfilled.

A preocupação com o adequado tratamento de resíduos industriais surgiu com o conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável criado pelo Clube de Roma e contribuiu para o uso racional dos recursos naturais ao longo dos últimos 50 anos. A preocupação com a produção responsável e uso judicioso de recursos naturais priorizou a reciclagem de materiais na agenda das empresas, tornando-se numa atividade de alta relevância, vital para a sustentabilidade econômica e ambiental. Este trabalho aborda os aspectos técnicos, econômicos e ambientais da reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco através do estudo de caso de reciclagem de resíduos gerados no processo de fabricação de aço em Forno Elétrico, denominado pó de Aciaria Elétrica (PAE). A indústria ainda está em busca de tecnologias para redução da geração e reciclagem desse resíduo. A relevância do estudo está na utilização da Análise Hierárquica de Processo (AHP) para avaliação e seleção da melhor alternativa, entre várias, para tratamento e reciclagem do PAE. Como resultado, demonstrou-se a eficácia do uso da metodologia no empreendimento de reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco implantado pela Votorantim, em Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais.

Developed for more than 30 years, continuously improved, cored wire is nowadays a reliable solution for the improvement of sustainability, safety, health and doing quality and cost saving. Cored wire allows the addition of ferroalloys and treatment of liquid steel, especially concerning the calcium treatment. Amongst all the processes in secondary metallurgy, calcium treatment is certainly the most critical one before casting. Besides the traditional CaSi and CaFe wires, new types of wire have been designed for becoming the new reference in calcium treatment. PapCal (calcium insulated wire) and HDx (high density calcium wire) are a very versatile range of products. Indeed, according to the steelmaking process parameters (steel grade, treatment temperature, ladle size, calcium content targeted in tundish and even injection conditions), their technical specifications may be adapted in order to optimize the calcium treatment as high as possible.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever as ações que foram tomadas pela TKCSA com o objetivo de restabelecer a capacidade operacional plena do Gasômetro (BFG), pela sua estabilidade e, por conseguinte a sua continuidade operacional. Desde seu start-up, ambos os Gasômetros apresentaram vários problemas que impediram sua operação em plena capacidade; provocaram várias paradas para realinhamento, rebalanceamento, bem como repopeamento. Estas ocorrências interferiram fortemente na Geração de energia do complexo, devido a instabilidade dos Gasômetros, causada por irregular movimentação do pistão, provocando sua descentralização e desnivelamentos fora das tolerâncias aceitáveis, o que levou a TKCSA a limitar a operação dos Gasômetros e, mesmo assim ; sempre que descentralizava e ou desnivelava, era necessário novos ajustes (repopeamento e rebalanceamento). Tais eventos nestes importantes equipamentos, levaram a CSA a tomar várias ações conforme preconiza o IGEM (Instituition of Gas Engineer) passando por reparos estruturais e culminando com a troca do sistema de selagem dos Gasômetros.
