INTRODUCTION Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modern coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modern preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1 ) Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2) Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3) Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits. 4) Dewatering. 5) Rock and trash removal by handpicking on a screen. Fig. 8-1 is a generalized flowsheet of a plant showing the use of screens in the coal preparation process. Table 8-1 shows the vibrating screen equipment utilized in Fig. 8-1

SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of stationary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. In 1884, the first power-operated anthracite coal breaker was erected by Gideon Bart at his colliery at Wolf Creek near Minersville, Pa. This plant utilized a system of rolls for breaking the coal and revolving screens for sizing. The plant was driven by a steam engine. It could handle coal at the rate of 200 tons a day. By 1860, revolving screens were in wide use in the Pennsylvania anthracite field. Shaking screens were introduced in the Pennsylvania anthracite region in the 90's and they rapidly displaced the lower-capacity revolving screens.

Shotts The sizing of coal particles is one of the most important beneficiation operations performed from the time coal is broken at the face until it is delivered to the customer. Indeed, in many cases it may be virtually the only such operation performed in that interval, although it is most often accompanied by some comminution. Sizing, as the term implies, is a separation of the broken coal particles into arbitrary groups, each group containing particles within restricted mass, volume or size limits. Size itself is not a rigidly defined property, but is actually determined more by the operating principles of the sizing device than by unique properties of the particles themselves. Particle size cannot be uniquely defined independently of particle shape. Taggart l says, "In fact, it is not possible to state the size of a single irregular body by means of a single dimension; such possibility exists only for regular polyhedra and their limit, the sphere." In view of the scarcity of regular polyhedra among coal particles, even though most appear to approximate a cube, we actually define size in terms of a surface opening through which the particle barely will or will not pass, or of two openings, the smaller of which retains all particles of the group under study and the larger of which passes all of them. THE important factors in any study of the screening of sand with a gravel enve-lope, as applied to use in oil wells, are: (r) sand size and shape, (2) gravel size and shape, (3) ratio of gravel size to sand size, (4) flow velocity, (5) viscosity of the fluid. Perhaps the first extensive investigation of the function of gravel in screening sand was performed by Coberly and Wagner,1 from which the following conclusion was drawn: "The diameter of the largest grains in a single classified sand suitable for gravel packing is approximately 23 times the grain size at the ten-percentile analysis of the formation sample." This applies to sands classified by Tyler screens and is for gravel grains of the maximum size that could be used to form a stable bridge. Field practice has shown that the screening effect of a given gravel for a given sand apparently varies with the flow velocity.2 Also, it has been assumed by some opera-tors that the thickness of the walls of the gravel envelope surrounding the well has little effect upon the screening process. It is thought by others that a narrow envelope of gravel might form an ineffec-tive screen. Thus the purposes of this work are: I. To investigate the effect of gravel-sand size ratio upon screening action under the condition of varying flow velocities. 2. To investigate the effect upon screen-ing action of varying the thickness of the gravel screen.

ACCURATE ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fine¬ness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by mis-use, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to he actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

The Freeport Sulphur Co. built a portable crusher in 1944 that solved a problem that none of the crusher manufacturing companies contacted were able to do. Two of these crushers have now been in service for 6 years, giving satisfactory service in handling a million tons per year, and having a capacity of over 2000 long tons per 8-hr shift. These machines reduce ton size blocks of sulphur to 12 in. and also feed the conveyor system at the rate of 350 long tons per hr per machine.

California’s Monterey Peninsula, noted for its beaches, resort hotels, and beautiful homes, also harbors a pioneering beneficiation operation. Here for more than 35 years the Del Monte Properties Co. has provided sand products from large dunes, some over 300 ft high, located in the Del Monte Forest. Raw material-the dunes derived by wave action from Santa Lucia granite of Jurassic age-has unusually consistent chemical and physical composition. Coarse crystalline feldspar is the principal constituent, followed in abundance by quartz, with some biotite, ilmenite, garnet, zircon, and monazite.

It is a rare work of art that attains the proportions of a major construction project. One instance of such a phenomenon is Bartholdi's Miss Liberty, which was designed and built section by section in Paris and then erected in New York Harbor. Another is Borglum's massive presidential quartet hewn from the granite of Mount Rushmore. Now, however, there is a new monument in the making which will completely dwarf all others. The sculptor of this supercolossus is Korczak Ziolkowski, a colorful, bearded genius who assisted Borglum on Mount Rushmore and is now carving his own granite masterpiece from Thunderhead Mountain near Custer, S. D., just ten crow-flight miles away from Rushmore.

INTRODUCTION For various reasons I have not specified the locality where the research indicated in the following pages was undertaken. It will suffice to say that it was on the grounds of a villa once remote from, but now completely surrounded by, its neighboring city, and in close proximity to an industrial establishment of great extent and importance manufacturing many kinds of steel articles and employing upwards of thirty chimney-stacks for power and process work. The problem was to discover the cause or causes of the mortality to trees and plants on the place, and to trace these causes to their origin. Before undertaking this experimental work, the bibliography accompanying this paper was compiled and studied. It appears from an examination of the careful scientific work performed by the ablest French, German, and English chemists during the last 25 years that they are unanimous in assigning the principal-in fact, the overwhelmingly predominant-cause of the destruction of vegetation to sulphur oxides, resulting either from direct- oxidation of sulphur in oil of vitriol works, etc., or from the oxidation of the sulphur from the minerals associated with commercial coal. Schröder and Schertel showed in 1884 that the sulphates deposited upon the leaves are not injurious to the plants; and Freytag proved that free sulphuric acid could not be found

Although the phenomenon of season cracking is still imperfectly understood, there seems to be ample evidence that season cracks are propagated by the combined action of corrosion and a stress of either internal (residual) origin or external origin. The factors that influence season cracking may therefore be grouped according to corrosive media, nature of stress, and character of the material. Thus the important mass of evidence pointing to ammonia as the most frequently active corroding agent causing season - - cracking of brass has naturally led to the development of laboratory tests of a moderately accelerated character based upon ammonia together with auxiliary agents such as air, water vapor, and carbon dioxide as the corroding agent. Similarly, the knowledge that stress must be present has led to the use of externally applied and therefore accurately measurable stresses in laboratory testing. A companion paper(^)^ to the present one discusses the development of these test methods in our laboratories. The present paper discusses data bearing on factors concerning the nature of stress such as its magnitude and direction of application. It also deals extensively with the character of the brass, particularly in regard to the copper-zinc ratio and the structure as developed by mechanical work-

IMPINGEMENT attack, as one of the types of corrosion suffered by condenser tubes, has been given a prominent place in corrosion literature of recent years. It has been reproduced and studied in carefully controlled laboratory tests. Much has been learned of its mechanism, and of the effects of variables such as temperature, amount of air, size of bubble and water velocity. Incidentally the technical public has been given comparisons between the behavior of some few metals under various conditions of impingement attack. The tests recorded here were undertaken in an effort to find at least some sort of qualitative answer to questions which arose occasionally as to the relative resistance of various alloys to impingement attack, and which could not be answered by reference to the literature. The final decision to start work on the problem was influenced in large measure by the nature of the water available in this particular place. The mill of the Bridgeport Brass Co. is located on the Pequonnock River at Bridgeport, Conn., within two miles of its mouth. The water is much like many other estuarine sources which are used in condensers, and which cause particularly severe corrosion. It seemed a most suitable water to use in such tests. As the work progressed an important seasonal variation was noted. The purpose of this note is to record this seasonal effect. The results of individual tests are given only incidentally.

THE COMMITTEE on Correlation of Research held two meetings in 1931. The first was a luncheon meeting on Feb. 19, at the Engineers Club, New York, attended by eight members and four guests-William H. Bassett, past-president of the Institute; Robert E. Tally, president; H. Foster Bain, secretary; and Alfred D. Flinn, director of the Engineering Foundation. Mr. Bassett gave a short resume of the circumstances leading to the formation of the Committee and expressed his opinion that the objectives as expressed by the Committee in its first annual report were in accordance with the ideas of the Institute officials. Mr. Tally stressed the great importance of research in the mining and metallurgical industries and stated that lie believed the Institute should encourage and promote research, and that this Committee could do a great deal to foster such work in the Institute. Mr. Bain pointed out that this Committee was appointed with a view to correlating and fostering research work. in the field of the Institute's activities. This could be done in various ways, as by encouraging the divisions and committees of the Institute to hold group meetings on research, by forming research subcommittees in the Institute divisions, and by bringing together research interest in. certain projects and the fund or organization that is equipped to carry out the project.

A three day international mining convention was held At the city hall of Nelson, B. C., June 19-21. It was held under the auspices of the Nelson-Slocan and British Columbia Mining Men's Club, the Northwest Mining Association of Spokane, the Kootenay Mine Owners' Association, assisted by the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the Vancouver, Chamber of Mines, the City of Nelson, the Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia and the Nelson Board of Trade. The technical program was in charge of Columbia Section, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and Western Branch and Kootenay-Boundary Branch, The Canadian Mining Institute. The first day was given over to the judging of mining exhibits and manufacturer's displays; the organization of a branch of the Canadian Mining Institute, and the reception of visitors from Spokane. On Friday afternoon a joint session of the Canadian Mining Institute and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held.

THE CHAIRMAN.-This session has to do largely with the question of specifications and conservation as regards secondary metals produced from scrap. We are all familiar with the many varieties of scrap metals and the astonishing number of secondary metals of various specifications produced from the treatment of those scraps. The impact. of the war on this industry has required a great many changes in the types of secondary metals produced from scrap, and in their utilization. In the short period available we cannot cover very much of this field, but we do hope to give you through the various papers a brief introduction to some of the principal problems. Mr. James S. The term "secondary aluminum" frequently is used loosely and often is considered synonomous with "inferior quality." Under war conditions, when every pound of material must contribute its share to the job at hand, this type of thinking is most unfortunate. Actually, given a supply of segregated scrap, an experienced smelter can produce remelted ingot of good quality, comparing closely to the analysis of the original material, and of considerable value of the war effort. The alloys he can produce are, of course, somewhat controlled by the analysis of the available scrap and, by the very nature of things, some of his production is not suitable for indiscriminate use. However, remelted scrap ingot provided about 273,2 per cent of this country's domestically-produced 1942 aluminum supply and probably will comprise about 39 per cent of the 1943 supply. (Canadian production is excluded from these figures.) That this part of the supply remains important is indicated by a recent report that "requirements" for the second quarter of this year were about 14 per cent greater than the supply, even though that supply will be almost twice the prewar annual production. (And those requirements, incidentally, were prepared after many conservation measures had been taken into account.) Since W. Bonsack recently has published a paper2 on the effects of the various alloying elements and impurities on the properties of aluminum, and such con¬siderations really are the important ones in a discussion of the metallurgy of secondary aluminum, it is planned to restrict this discussion more to a consideration of the sources, general characteristics and possible uses of these materials. For the purpose of this discussion, mill (or run-around) scrap may be disregarded and only plant scrap and obsolete scrap considered. Plant scrap, of course, is that scrap which is generated during the production of some part or assembly from a fabricated form of aluminum, such as sheet, tubing, forgings, castings or the like, and it may consist of solids (including rejected parts or subassemblies) or of machinings. To the extent that the several alloys are effectively segregated and the material is properly identified, the composition after remelting can be rather closely controlled or predicted. Obsolete scrap, on the other hand, is the "junk" which accumulates because of the wearing out or breakage of some piece of equipment. Although it is almost always in the form of solids, the accumulation includes many different alloys (often in the same assembly) and may include a considerable amount of nonaluminum material. The "metallics" recovered from drosses also contribute a portion of this class of material. The composition after remelting, therefore, may vary over rather wide limits and can not be very accurately predicted in any specific instance. THE utilization and collection of waste materials have gone on for centuries, and have become a habit of the human race. The degree to which the salvaging of waste plays a part in a nation's industry depends largely on the availability of raw materials within the political confines of the country itself, or its ability to purchase such material from outside. When purchase is necessary careful economical use of the raw materials results. These economies, as a rule, are represented by lengthening the life of the given article as well as much re-use. For many years the steel industry of Italy and Japan has depended largely on importations of scrap, yet both are important. As long as the expenses incident to the conditioning and marketing of materials manufactured from salvaged waste are less than the cost of virgin material, the salvaged material will be re-fabricated and in many cases will compete with primary materials. One of the most obvious methods for furthering the efficient utilization of our limited mineral resources is the salvaging of mineral wastes. This method, moreover, in¬creases the available supply of a given material. If the price depends on a balance of supply and demand and the recovery from wastes enlarges. the supply, there can be no question but that it influences the sales price of primary.
