Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U808. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U308 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pct U308 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8, with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process for the recovery of pure magnesite from low grade ores is described. The process consists of a first-stage, magnesite flotation step where a rougher magnesite concentrate is floated with amine collectors. The first-stage froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and quartenary ammonium salt and fuel oil are added to float the remaining impurities. The results from laboratory batch tests show that a high-grade magnesite concentrate assaying 0.99-0.20% Si02 and 2.84-0.46%a Ca0 can be produced. Regulation of the variables controlling magnesite froth flotation also allows the variation of the ratio % Ca0: % SiO2, between the acceptable limits 0.32 to 5.79. This ratio is important to the quality of dead-burned magnesite.

CLEANING fine coal in jigs is not new in Europe, where the feldspar jig is being used almost exclusively for this purpose. A feldspar jig operates with an artificial bed made up generally of feldspar or other hard rock material. Dimensions and specific gravity of this material must be of suitable values for good bedding qualities. For good efficiency, the size should range between 1x2 in. and 2x2x1/2 in. thick.

High-resolution seismic reflection profiling can be used to evaluate detailed structural and stratigraphic features of coal prospects. Since most coal prospects are relatively shallow, less than 1000 m (3000 ft) deep, high sampling rates in space and time can be used effectively to improve vertical and lateral resolution of seismic data. The case study presented here shows how seismic data was used to evaluate the Wyodak coal at a prospective coal gasification site. The data were used to map the detailed structure and thickness of the coal and to search for lateral discontinuities, such as pinchouts and faults. An important find was a paleochannel cutting across the base of the coal seam, which was later confirmed by drilling.

Introduction Coal is found in every major geographic region through-out Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852, more than 100 small mines have opened and closed. In 1981 and 1982 production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly, the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic, and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure 1 illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and the western US. Alaska's Arctic region generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of the western US. The southcentral and southeastern regions have a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the West Coast. The Arctic, the central, and the southcentral regions have major coal fields. The southeast region has scattered occurrences. The topographic, climatic, and economic characteristics of each are different. These differences have a large effect on practical mining methods. Description of Alaskan Coal Coal deposits known in Alaska are almost all of Cretaceous or Tertiary age, much younger than the Carboniferous coal deposits of eastern and midwestern states. Consequently, most Alaskan coals have a higher moisture content and a lower heat value. Most Alaskan coals also have a much lower sulfur content. Low volatile bituminous, and anthracite coals occur in Alaska, but most Alaskan coals range downward in rank from high volatile bituminous to subbituminous and lignite. Alaskan coals are similar to coals of the northern Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Arctic Region Northern Alaska Coal Fields Northern Alaska coal fields are by far the largest group of coal deposits in Alaska (Fig. 2). Coal-bearing rocks extend from the foothills of the Brooks Range about 160 km (100 miles) northward to within about 80 km (50 miles) of the Arctic coast. The principal known occurrences are between the Colville River and the western coast. However, coal has been found eastward almost to the Canning River and westward under the Arctic Ocean. The northern Alaska coal fields are in a series of Cretaceous rocks that suggest a deltaic depositional environment. The beds tend to occur in series of up to eight or nine beds totaling 6-9 m (20-30 ft) of coal. However, beds 6-12 m (20-40 ft) thick have been reported, and beds 1-3 m (3-10 ft) thick seem to be relatively common. Including thin seams, coal in some places makes up about 10% of the stratigraphic section. However, no area has been explored in sufficient detail to block out any large body of reserves or to make reliable estimates of the total resource. Observation points in drill holes and along river and stream banks are few and far between. Coals in northern Alaskan fields tend to range in rank from bituminous, where moderately folded and faulted in the foothills, to subbittuminous in the gently folded rocks under the coastal plain. Coals toward the eastern extremities of the coal fields may be of Tertiary age and lower in rank, but the same general correlation between degree of folding and increase in rank can be expected. In the selective flocculation of iron ores, the concentration of alkaline earth ions in pulp solutions plays a critical role. Sodium silicate, alone or with sodium tripolyphosphate, has been used as a dispersant. When Ca+ + concentration exceeds 15 to 20 ppm, however, only a strong complexing agent, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was found to be effective (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). Some iron ores release Ca+ + in excess of 20 ppm. With ores that contain gypsum, the Ca+ + concentration may reach several hundred ppm. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of EDTA with nitrilotriacetate (NTA) in countering the adverse effects of Ca+ +, particularly at high Ca+ + concentrations. Emphasis was placed on the use of NTA since it is more cost-effective than EDTA. It is also used in detergents in some countries (Malaiyandi, Williams, and O'Grady, 1979). NTA, like EDTA, forms a soluble complex with Ca+ + with a 1:1 molar ratio. Its structure and the value of log Kca are given below together with EDTA (Shibata, 1963). [ ] For experimental materials, an equal weight mixture of Lac Jeannine hematite and a high-purity quartzite from Thompson, MN, both ground to - 30 µm (- 560 mesh) was used. Selective flocculation test conditions and procedures were identical to those used in previous investigations (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). The optimum level of starch addition for the above mixture was determined to be at 300 g/t (0.6 lb per st). Initially, a series of selective flocculation tests were performed on the mixture pulped with 10-3M CaC12 (40 ppm Ca + +) at pH 11. With no NTA present, flocculation of the entire suspension resulted. The selectivities achieved in tests with 90, 100, and 150% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA were virtually identical to each other and also to the selectivity of separation obtained in the absence of Ca+ + Such an observation could have been expected since Ca+ + concentrations up to a few ppm may be tolerated in selective flocculation (Krishnan and Iwasaki, 1982). A similar series of tests were performed at 10-2M CaC12 (400 ppm Ca+ +). The results are shown in Fig. 1 as grade¬recovery curves. For comparison, the results obtained in the absence of Ca++ are included. At 90% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA, a large enough concentration of uncomplexed Ca+ + was left in solution to cause indiscriminate flocculation. Note in this figure that NTA is capable of countering the adverse effect of Ca+ + even at this high concentration when it is used in excess of stoichiometric amounts. The free Ca+ + concentrations at 100 and 150% are calculated to be 2.5 and 0 ppm, respectively. [ ] The relative effectiveness of NTA and EDTA was then compared at 100% of the stoichiometric amount using 10-2M and 10-3M CaCI2 (Fig. 2). EDTA appears to be slightly more effective than NTA. The free Ca++ of 0.02 ppm in 10-2M CaC12 with EDTA compared to 2.5 ppm free Ca+ + with NTA might account for the difference. As evident, prohibitively high additions of EDTA and NTA were required to complex high concentrations of calcium ion. The use of both of these agents would result in the accumulation of complexed Ca+ + in recycle water.

Introduction Computer simulation is a technique that has been around for many years. Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shots, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. However, the use of computer simulation in surface coal mining is fairly recent. To promote its use, several government agencies, including the US Bureau of Mines, Forest Service, and Department of Energy, contracted with universities and private companies to develop computer simulation programs for surface coal mining. An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [bImpulse _P d At max =nwuwu where: bmax = maximum burden in m (ft). P= average detonation pressure in N/m2 (lb per ft2). A= duration of the average detonation pressure in sec. n= 3.1416. w= specific weight of rock in N/m3 (lb per ft3). u= minimum velocity that must be imparted to the rock in m/sec (ft per sec). d= borehole diameter in m (ft).] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m1/2-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [P d Atbmax =gu g = gravitational constant equal to 9.81 m/sect (32.2 ft per sec2).] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per see). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). [Introduction The critical surface tension of wetting of hydrophobic materials has been investigated extensively by Zisman et al. (1973) and relates the spreading of a liquid on a solid to the surface tension of this liquid. Thus, the Zisman ap¬proach shows that a plot of Cos 0 versus ?LV where, 0 is the contact angle and ?LV is the surface tension of that liquid in contact with its own vapor at equilibrium, produces a straight line which can be extrapolated to Cos 0 = 1. The intercept corresponds to a given ?LV, termed the critical surface tension of wetting. In instances, however, Cos 0 - ?LV plots show deviations from linearity. Alternative approaches have also included the plotting of adhesion tension (YLV COs 0) versus ?LV that can be interpreted in terms of critical surface tension data (Lucassen-Reynders, 1963). It has, on the other hand, been customary to correlate contact angle (0) with flotation data, although it is recognized that surface inhomogeneities and related contact angle hysteresis limit the interpretations pertaining to solid surface structures purely based on contact angle measurements. It is nonetheless true that 0 = 0, when the liquid is water, corresponds to a hydrophilic solid. Determination of ?c by contact angle measurements in conformity with the Zisman approach can encounter experimental difficulties, especially when solids are in a powder form. Following the reasoning that 0 = 0 corresponds to the hydrophilic state of a solid, froth flotation experiments can be expected to produce critical surface tension of wetting values for powders. The technique that consists of plotting recovery (% R) versus YLV data and extrapolating the linear part of the curve to % R = 0, has been described elsewhere (Yarar and Kaoma, 1984). This paper describes some of the results obtained by the extrapolation technique mentioned above, using various sulfide minerals. Experimental Materials Molybdenite (MoS2), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S), and galena (PbS) were handsorted from massive samples and ground by mortar and pestle, and the -147 Fan fraction used in experiments; sulfur (S) was a C.P. Fisher Scientific Co. product. Method One gram powder samples were conditioned for three minutes in methanol-water solutions of predetermined surface tension values and the percents recovered by flotation using a Partridge-Smith Cell (Partridge and Smith, 1972), were plotted against each ?LV value. Results and Discussion The percent recovery versus ?LV for two naturally hydrophobic solids, i.e., natural molybdenite, MoS2 and sulfur are given in Fig. 1 where it is seen that ?c for sulfur is obtained as 31.5 mNm-1 whereas for MoS2, it is 26 mNm-1. Figure 1 also shows that the new flotation technique described, for estimating ?c is in good agreement with the Zisman method. Curves obtained by the same method for the minerals Cu2S, PbS, and ZnS are given in Fig. 2, where it is seen that for Cu2S, ZnS, and PbS, the extrapolation to % R = 0 produces ?c values of 36, 39, and 49 mNm-1, respectively. CuFeS2, on the other hand, gives a curve that does not permit such an extrapolation to obtain a ?c value with certainty. Nonetheless, treatment of the powder with 8.95 X 10-5 molar Na2S solution followed by washing with distilled water prior to flotation effects the curves as shown in the insert of Fig. 2. The type of curves given in Fig. 1 appear to be typical of hydrophobic solids as can also be observed in Fig. 3. The composition of solid and minute quantities of inclusions seem to play an important role as regards the surface properties of solids as reflected by the slope of the linear part of the % R - ?LV plot and thus the value of ?c obtained by this technique. BECAUSE of the well known relationship between a low atmospheric pressure and increased amounts of methane in coal mines, attempts have been made to find associations between low pressures and coal mine explosions. An early study by F. Able disclaimed this relationship. He found that half the explosions took place during a rising barometer when methane content in a ventilated mine would be decreasing. A more recent study by C. L. Hosler revealed a close relationship between anthracite mine explosions and low atmospheric pressure. Bituminous coal mine explosions, where coal dust as well as methane can be exploded, were found to be more closely associated with a rising pressure following a low barometer than with the falling or low pressure period.

Discovery of the Delbridge massive sulfide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage halo as a lithochemical pathfinder to blind ore. Its location, relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy was also a factor. Systematic sampling of microfractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulfide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 110-m (360-ft) level.

Introduction The success of preventive methods for the mitigation of coal mine drainage formation will require a marriage of the minimization of initial coal mine drainage formation, the minimization of toxic fluid formation after toxic material disposal, the minimization of the mobilization and transpor¬tation of formed toxic fluids, and the maximization of the rate of diultion and attenuation of the formed toxic fluids. This paper contributes to the understanding of factors af¬fecting mobilization and dilution and attenuation of formed toxic fluids. When water containing a salt content different from in situ pore water in the soil is passed through a body of soil, the concentration of salts in the outflow will gradually change composition in a manner that depends on the kinds of hydraulic processes that occur in the soil. These processes are molecular diffusion, lateral dispersion, longitudinal dispersion, chemical reactions or exchange, physical adsorp¬tion, and biological retardation. This note considers only the first three processes. These three microscopic processes can be analyzed statistically on a probability basis. Such results, confirmed experimentally, indicate that a tracer introduced instantaneously as a point source will tend to form a Gaussian normal distribution as it moves downstream (Todd, 1964). Dilution During Flow The closed-form soltuion for pulse or instantaneous injec¬tion of a tracer during confined flow in a homogeneous porous medium shows that the maximum tracer concen¬tration at a point in space, x, after the time interval, t*, is given by [ ] where Aa is the effective flow cross-sectional area; A is the column cross-sectional area; a is soil porosity; M is mass of the injected tracer; C is concentration of the tracer in the permeating fluid and is a function of x and t*; D is the longitudinal dispersion coefficient; and va is the interstitial fluid velocity (Klotz and Moser, 1974). Therefore, the following conclusion can be made: • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, and a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, Cmax will decrease as the time of peak outflow concen¬tration t* increases. • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, and a constant interstitial fluid velocity, va Cmax will decrease as the distance of travel, x, increases. • For a medium of constant cross sectional area, A, con¬stant soil porosity, a, a constant mass of injected tracer, M, and a fixed distance of travel, x, Cmax will decrease as D/va increases. Klotz and Moser (1974) concluded that D is about proportional to no.3 where r) is the kinematic viscosity; D is about proportional to a-3 where a is soil porosity; D in¬creases with increasing grain size; D increases as grains become less spherical; D increases with greater grain rough¬ness and angularity; D increases with increasing uniformity coefficient; and D is significantly affected by grain size and uniformity coefficient. The remaining parameters are not significant. Numerical Simulation Studies Numerical simulation studies were used to investigate the nature of flow and the optimum length of a toxic package within a saturated porous medium of fixed dimensions and configuration (Fig. 1). The width and position of the package was maintained constant (Phelps et al., 1981). Two special tools for recovering gamma-ray probes and logging cable from drillholes have been designed by Ohm and Bunker and constructed by Ohm. Though intended specifically for U. S. Geological Survey equipment, they may be used with other equipment of the same general type. Fishing Tool for Probes: A fishing tool of the overshot type (Fig. 1) was designed to retrieve logging probes (sondes) that become disconnected from the logging cable and are trapped in the drillhole. When the tool slides over the top of the gamma-ray probe, studs on the bottom engage the shoulder near the top of the probe (Fig. 2), which is then pulled to surface.

The Darwin mining district of California, 160 miles north of Los Angeles, has yielded an estimated $45 million in lead, silver, zinc, and copper since 1875. The deposits are in silicated limestone of Pennsylvanian and Permian age close to a stock of horn- blende-biotite-quartz monzonite. Steep left-lateral strike-slip faults that strike N 50" 70" E served as feeder channels for the ore solutions, and minor folds, favorable beds, and faults close to the feeder channels localized the orebodies. The orebodies are irregular, steep, pipe-like replacements that cut across bedding, bedding replacements, and fissure fillings in a calc-silicate country rock consisting mainly of wollastonite, grossularite-andradite garnet, idocrase, and diopside. Near surface the ore consists of a soft, crumbly mass of cerussite, hemimorphite, jarosite, limonite, and some secondary copper minerals. The primary ore consists of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite with smaller amounts of andorite, matildite, scheelite, tetrahedrite, and a high silver- lead-bismuth-selenium-bearing galena.

The research project on size reduction, sponsored by the mining industry through financial support from individual companies, is now embarking on a second three-year program. The first 3-year program had as its objectives assimilation of the literature on comminution and development of simulation programs encompassing the basic mechanisms of grinding. This involved investigating conditions under which a particle in a mill is captured, the stress to which it is subjected, its break probability, and the resulting particle size distributions. The results were used to obtain the most representative simulation models based on current knowledge of mechanisms. As part of this work a set of computer programs has been developed for the following cases: . Batch mill, by numerical integration for completely general selection and breakage functions. . Continuous open-circuit mill by same method as above. . Continuous open-circuit mill by general numerical integration method, including transient behavior

PRESENT flotation processes depend almost entirely on the buoyant properties of air bubbles to effect separations of mineral and gangue, but there is no convenient method for measuring aeration in flotation cells. Consequently the relation between aeration and cell performance has not been definitely established. In connection with a comparative study of kerosene and froth flotation processes, a modification of the displacement method' was developed in which air escaping from the cell surface is measured with a wet-test meter. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 is satisfactory for use with a number of cells and is not critical, except that care must be taken to use connections and tubing large enough to avoid excessive back pressures. Attempts to use smaller tubing resulted in back pressures that caused displacement of the liquid level in the receiver, so that some air was lost around the sides, an occurrence readily visible when measurements were taken with only water passing through the cell. With the arrangement shown, the manometer indicated an average reading of about ½ -in. water pressure. No loss of air was evident.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

MEASUREMENT of zeta potentials is a useful tool to study the surface chemistry of minerals under flotation conditions.1,2 Because there is continued interest in this approach, the apparatus for obtaining zeta potentials of nonconducting solids by the streaming potential method is outlined here. Fig. 1 illustrates the streaming potential apparatus." The streaming potential cell or plug consists of two 24/40 standard ground joints (4) joined with a piece of pyrex tubing 60 mm long and 12 mm in diam (5). The electrodes are made of bright platinum disks 19 mm in diam and 1 mm thick through which 0.5-mm holes have been drilled (6). To the surface of each is welded a piece of 80-mesh platinum gauze. Each electrode is permanently mounted on the ends of the inner parts of the two standard joints by means of a platinum wire (7) which connects it to the tungsten seal at the end of the cell (8). For ease in cleaning and handling the apparatus, the streaming cell is fastened to the 500-ml reservoir flasks (1) by means of two 18/9 ball and socket joints (2). This particular arrangement permits passage of the solution in either direction through the plug of particles. Flow of solution can be stopped by a stopcock (3). One of the reservoir flasks has a large opening to permit insertion of either a thermometer or a pair of electrodes for measuring pH of solutions within the system. In making the experiments, the plug is filled with 48 to 65-mesh particles, but a layer of 28 to 35-mesh particles is placed at each electrode to prevent any of the finer particles from passing through holes in the electrodes. The assembled apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 2. To eliminate CO2 from the solutions, all experiments are conducted in a nitrogen atmosphere. Nitrogen, used to drive solutions through the plug, is passed through a bottle of concentrated KOH solution to remove CO2 (9). A 9-liter ballast reservoir (10) is used to maintain a more nearly uniform pressure. A series of stopcocks controls the direction of flow nitrogen to the flasks (11). Tubes of as-carite prevent backflow of CO2 into the system (12). Driving pressure, which can be set at any desired value, is measured with either a water manometer (13) or a mercury manometer (14). Reservoir flasks have side arms for making pressure corrections for the difference in water levels in the flasks. Streaming potentials are measured by the circuit illustrated in Fig. 2. The electrodes from the plug are connected through mercury wells (15) to a reversing switch (16), which reverses the polarity of the electrodes depending on the direction of flow of solution through the plug. The streaming potential is measured with a Leeds and Northrup type K2 potentiometer (17). Proper choice of null instrument is important because Eq. 1 assumes that the current which escapes through the measuring instruments is negligible. Introduction In 1956, the first mobile crusher was installed in a limestone quarry in Hover, Germany. These early mobile crushers solved the problem of wet and soft ground conditions that did not permit the use of haulage trucks due to the high cost of building and maintaining the haulage roads. Quarry operators also wanted to take advantage of continuous belt conveyor haulage systems and the resulting cost savings. European mines, particularly the coalfields, are in soft materials that allow use of bucket wheel excavators and their following continuous haulage system of belt conveyors. Quarry operators, with this background knowledge of belt conveyors in mining, easily accepted the conveyor concept, once in-pit mobile crushing solved the problem of size reduction of mine-run-rock required for conveyor application. Four years after the initial mobile crusher installation, the first report published on the subject appeared in the December 1960 issue of Mining Engineer (Kochanowsky, 1960). With this early background and basis for direction, mobile in-pit crushing and conveying have increased to more than 74 installations. The capacity, type of crusher, and material being processed appear in Table 1. These data in Table 1 indicate that experience to data has been heavily influenced by limestone installations of less than 1 kt/h (1102 stph). Most of these installations were directly fed by a mine face excavator because of the limestone quarry ground conditions. Crusher Configurations Crushers systems developed to date have varying mobility capabilities. These range from fully mobile units that are used continuously in this mode to fixed, permanently located in-pit crushers. The following terms are presented to help distinguish the range of mobility within the configurations of "mobile" crusher systems planned or now in use. Mobile Crusher The crusher works at the mine face, is directly fed by an excavator, and moves in unison with the excavator on its own transport mechanism as the mining progresses. An example is the unit delivered in 1976 to Yamama Cement Co. in Reyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Introduction The technique being investigated here uses a physical mine model which consists of a plexiglass room-and-pillar model 11.4 x 11.4 cm (4.5 x 4.5 in.). It is placed at the bottom of a larger plexiglass box 25.4 x 30.5cm (10 x 12 in.). The box is then filled with a model material representing geologic overburden. Sand has been selected because of its deformability under gravitational forces. The mine model is capable of creating a cavity and induces movement on the surface of the model material. This surface disturbance can be measured using a photographic technique called holographic interferometry. This paper discusses results of an investigation of the possibility of generating subsidence criteria using physical mine models and laser holographic interferometry. Problem Statement Subsidence appears to be widespread in two states - Pennsylvania and Illinois - although serious subsidence is found in localized areas of numerous other states (HRB Singer Inc., 1977). The US Bureau of Mines estimates that more than 1618 km2 (400,000 acres) of urban areas are threatened by subsidence. Pennsylvania and West Virginia contain 57% of these threatened areas, with the remainder being spread out over 16 states (Johnson and Miller, 1979). Events of subsidence have been reported in urban areas, including Pennsylvania (Gray et al., 1977) and Illinois (Mahar and Marino, 1981). One location has observed three episodes of subsidence beginning in 1950 (Bruhn et al., 1981). These subsidence events all occurred over abandoned room-and-pillar mines. Some mines have been abandoned more than 50 years (Bauer and Hunt,1981) . Available research does not offer much on the problem related to time dependent subsidence, especially those associated with the failure of remnant coal pillars. The physical modeling technique developed at West Virginia University is capable of measuring both instantaneous and time delayed subsidence. Laser Holographic Interferometry Laser holographic interferometry, or holometry, uses the interference properties of laser light to measure small movements of objects. The object requires only optical access and no surface instrumentation. This technique is closely related to photoelasticity. Both techniques rely on the uniqueness of the light reflected off or through an object in any given state of stress. The entire measurement process is done remotely without any surface instrumentation and without using a camera. The interferogram is constructed and visual observation will yield fringes on all areas that yielded or moved. The displacement represented by one fringe was determined by Wilson et al. (1977) and is given by the relationship: [d ='1(1) 2 cos 8 where d = displacement of one fringe 6 = incident angle of laser light A = wavelength of light (632.8 x 10-9 meters for Helium-Neon lasers)] In summary, holometry is capable of detecting very small movements of objects under study. It is a very sensitive process that requires laser light and vibration free experiments. Experimental Program Lab Facilities The primary components of the facilities were the laser and the optical table. The light source was 50 milli-watt, Helium-Neon laser. The optical table was a granite slab weighing nearly one ton. All experiments were performed on the optical table. It consists of a large table sitting on air cells similar to car innertubes. Six air cells were placed on top of two layers of wood and Styrofoam. Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the vibration free table. Even with these precautions, the experiments still had to be performed at night to reduce potential traffic related vibrations. Room-and-pillar mine models consisting of three different pillar sizes were constructed out of plexiglass. The models were designed to represent three different extraction ratios. Figure 2 shows the models. The extraction ratios were determined by the tributary loading concept (Peng, 1978). These models were the primary component of a seam extraction simulator. A schematic of this simulation device is shown in Fig. 3.
