From our previous work (Gardner, Aissa, and Verghese, 1982) on determining the residence time distribution of ball mi 11s from radiotracer data taken in closed-circuit operation without interruption of the process, it occurred to us that the data taken for this purpose also contained information on the breakage rates of all the sizes present. It is the purpose of the present work to evaluate methods to obtain breakage rates from this data. A numerical solution for the impulse injection and subsequent detection of radiotracer in a closed-circuit linear comminution process is developed and used with typical breakage parameters, residence time distribution, and classifier functions to study and evaluate these methods.

THE 122d meeting of the Institute was held in the Lake. Superior Copper and Iron Country Aug. 20 to Sept. 3, 1920 with an approximate registration of 1100 members and guests. This is the 'first visit of, the Institute to this vicinity since 1904 although previously it held meetings there every six or, seven years. 'The eastern party assembled at Buffalo and sailed on the S. S. "Tionesta ". on Friday morning, Aug. 20, arriving at Houghton, Mich., Monday, Aug. 23. En route stops were made at Detroit, where sightseeing auto trips were taken, and at Mackinac Island, where a short stop permitted a visit to the picturesque and historic Fort Mackinac.

THE 123d meeting of the Institute was held in New York Feb. 14 to 17, 1921. The total registration was 1199, as compared with 1138 at the New York meeting in 1920. The weather was a strange and welcome contrast to that of last year, when New York was buried under six feet of snow as the result of the fiercest blizzard in its history. This year there was no snow, and the weather was said to be much more like an Arizona winter than New York. A complete program of the Technical Sessions is on p. 9. The discussions of the papers presented will be published in pamphlet form as soon as possible and will be noted in MINING AND METALLURGY in the usual way.

I HAVE been greatly honored as your unanimous choice for President of this. Institute, with which I have been associated during my entire professional life. It is customary for your new President, on these occasions, to make some observation on matters of general interest from the engineer's standpoint. The profession of engineering in the United States comprises not alone scientific advisers on industry but, in great majority, is comprised of the men in administrative positions. In such positions, they stand midway between capital and labor. The character of your training and experience leads you to exact and quantitative thought. This basis of training in a great group of Americans furnished a wonderful' recruiting ground for service in these last years of tribulation. Many thousands of engineers were called into the army, the navy, and civilian service for the Government. Thousands of high offices were discharged by them with credit to the profession and the nation. We have in. this country, probably, one hundred thousand professional engineers. The events of the past few years have greatly stirred their interest in national problems.' This has taken practical. form in the maintenance of joint committees for discussion of these problems and support to a free advisory bureau in ,Washington. The engineers want nothing for themselves from Congress.. They want efficiency in government, and you contribute to the maintenance of this bureau out of sheer idealism. This organization for consideration of national problems has had many subjects before it, and I propose to touch on some of them this evening.

THE matter that I have on my mind this evening is engineering's need of an open forum. Our fathers of three centuries ago were pro-testanta for freedom of speech and thought in matters religious; later, our fathers were revolutionists for freedom of speech in matters political; until today freedom of speech has become so universal throughout the land that even in the sanctuary of our homes, at times, we have to turn off the loud-speaker. Talk is not always a condition of progress, but light is everywhere necessary to growth, whether the growing thing is a blade of grass, a baby chick, or a young idea, and we must regret anything that tends to shut out the light from the operations of business and industry. Of course, I realize there is little that is novel in what I am saying. Indeed, I have found that Dr. James Douglas-a name we love to honor in our Institute-as long ago as 1907, gave an address at the Toronto meeting that any of us would be proud to be author of twenty-one years after. Dr. Douglas at that time spoke on secrecy in the arts and the text then taken by this leader in metallurgical technique and in the constructive management of big business was "the dangerous temptation to adopt secretive methods by very large corporations." In both thought and language Dr. Douglas was direct and vigorous and he needs no internreter. He advocated the wide open door for ideas on two counts: advancement of technical knowledge and education of public opinion. A few sentences will serve not only to prove the vision of James Douglas, but also, I hope, tempt you to hunt up his address in the Institute's TRANSACTIONS, and thus get his whole thought first hand.

IN order to control a chemical process by other than empirical, rule of thumb methods, two types of knowledge concerning the reactions involved must be available: (1) the thermodynamics of the reactions, and (2), by no means less important for efficient operation, the mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions. Information on the thermodynamic side enables the operator to decide upon initial and final conditions, whether heat must be .added or removed from the system, whether the reactions proceed farthest in the desired direction at high pressure or low, etc. Knowledge of the mechanisms involves the determination of the individual steps by which an initial set of reactants, under given conditions, proceed to give the desired final products and kinetic studies upon which the mechanisms are based give the speed at which each of these reactions or steps take place. Thus thermodynamic studies of a 'reaction enable the operator to control the direction and extent to which the reaction can proceed, while kinetic studies enable him to control rates and thus the time' efficiency of the operations. The thermodynamics set the limit to which the reacting system approaches; the kinetics tell how fast the system actually approaches this limit. The two types of information are complementary and not antagonistic even though in discussing the mechanism the introduction of thermodynamics is entirely needless and generally of no assistance, while in thermodynamic studies mechanism need not even be mentioned.

LARGE quantities of fine anthracite with associated impurities are discharged with the waste water from the coal-cleaning plants in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. Furthermore, for many years this fine material has accumulated and formed silt banks. The difficulty of removing the impurities from the fine material and the lack of adequate markets are responsible for the waste of this material. In view of a larger demand for fine coal, mainly for pulverized fuel, the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. decided to investigate the froth flotation process for recovery of fine coal from these waste solids. A test plant was constructed and operated for six months during 1942 in order to determine the practicability of recovering coal from the waste water of a cleaning plant (breaker) by froth flotation, and to obtain operating data for designing a commercial plant if the results were favorable. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION Before the pilot plant was constructed information was obtained by field and small-scale laboratory tests to serve as a guide in the design and operation of the pilot plant. Size and ash analyses of a representative sample of the material discharged in the wash water from a cleaning plant are given in Table I. [ ] The refuse content increases progressively as the size of the particles decreases. The larger particles (+35 m.) are low in ash content and could be marketed without cleaning. Since these solids are discharged from the breakers with 90 to 95 per cent water by weight, the first step in the recovery of the coal was that of reducing the quantity of water so that water in excess will not have to be handled. Furthermore, it was found that the removal of most of the minus 200 mesh high-ash material was desirable to permit the most efficient flotation of the coal. Classification tests were run and showed that a hydroseparator overflow rate of 12 ft. per hour was sufficient to eliminate much of the minus 200-mesh material while allowing the coarser material to settle and be thickened.

IT is a pleasure to realize even at that day the dignity of the engineer's calling was upheld. May I also add my firm belief that today there be many engineers who will qualify to the specifications of our interesting author. Since that time, the development of the world has been chiefly due to the engineer, and so far as human brain can foresee, the material tasks of the future will continue to follow the directions of his judgment. Popular opinion says this is the age of the engineer; literature, which in the long run, voices public sentiment, shows it in the number of engineers who figure as characters of fiction. The engineer has been doing the big things necessary to increase the comfort and efficiency of mankind, but while a certain amount of fame and repute falls to him, too often he figures as the hired man of the entrepreneur, using that term not in the offensive sense of a mere promoter, but to mean the great visioned master of enterprise who has seen ahead of other men, recognized the coming needs of the world, and through ability to inspire others and to hire capital for his use has also been able to hire engineers as needed. Justly enough, therefore, to such men comes the fame as well as the prize of the game.

THE Sierra Mojada mining district is situated in western Coahuila, about 8 km. east of the Chihuahua state line, and about one-half way from the northern to the southern extremity of the state. It is at the terminus of the Mexican Northern R. R., 125 km. northeast of Escalón, Chihuahua; also about 240 km. due west of Monclova, Coahuila. The altitude is approximately 1500 m. above sea level. The Sierra Mojada valley is about 10 km. long, from east to west, with a width of 1 to 2 km. It is approached from the east through the Puerto del Oro, where the Mexican Northern R. R. enters the valley; the slope from west to east is gentle. The Sierra Mojada, of which about. 300 m. is an almost vertical wall, bounds the valley on the south side; on the north side, the slope to the crest of Sierra Planchada is more gradual, rising only 200 or 300 m. above the valley. Water is relatively scarce in the district, and there are no running streams. The rainy season, usually beginning at the middle of June, lasts through July, and occasionally into August or September. In some years the rains fail entirely. The slope of the ground is such that nearly all the water immediately runs off. The arroyos along 'the flanks of the mountains are not very deep, but in heavy rains, sometimes approaching cloudbursts, a tremendous volume of water rushes down them, carrying large boulders. A certain amount of seepage collects in the agglomerate, lying below the conglomerate, and is retained in the local fractures. Some shallow wells have been sunk in this agglomerate, and one well over 150 m. deep was sunk on, the Volcan ranch, supplying about 76 1. (20 gal.) per min. A considerable supply of water is collected in large earth reservoirs in and below the town of Esmeralda. In ordinary years this supply will last until January or February, after which the Volcan well has to be depended on until the next rainy season.

THE Tri-State district, as outlined in this paper, refers to the entire mineralized area in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma (Fig. 1). The part of the district in Missouri and near Galena, Kans., is still sometimes referred to as the Joplin district (Fig. 2). The Picher-Miami area is that part of the Tri-State district located contiguously in Kansas and Oklahoma in the vicinity of Baxter Springs, Picher and Miami. This paper is confined almost wholly to the ore deposits of the Tri-State district and particularly to the Picher-Miami area. Our study of the ore deposits of this district dates from late in 1925 (by Fowler) and early in 1927 (by Lyden) to the present. Our work has been confined almost entirely to the search for ore for numerous companies and individuals. It was not possible for us to undertake numerous highly interesting investigations which presented themselves but which would not immediately help in finding ore. We particularly refer to the general structural geology of the Ozark uplift, the genesis of the ore, and other problems of a similar nature. The local and general structural problems of the district are being solved gradually as the work progresses. The factors that control the loci of the several orebodies are evident. This paper is based almost exclusively upon our own observations. Most of the important mines in the Picher-Miami area were studied in detail. A map (Fig. 5) is included which shows this area and the properties we have examined to date. When it was convenient we visited, studied and compared structural relations in numerous mines in states outside the district. Some of these observations are noted in this paper.

Man has always felt more comfortable breaking his life into categories or classifications. An otherwise bewildering life somehow becomes easier to bear when divided into neat measurable sections, each of which is fitted into its proper niche. It seems likely that the world's first economic geologist, when faced with the world's first two ore bodies, started his career by classifying them. Early on, he divided his ore bodies into those born of water, of fire, and of air. In retrospect this threefold classification was probably about as useful as the more complex ones that followed. This division of ore bodies probably did not help him in his search for new deposits, but it made him feel more secure in dealing with those already known.

The Mine.-For some years attention has been drawn to the copper deposits of the Appalachian range of mountains, and especially to those in that portion crossing the corners of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Certain it is that in many places in this locality available deposits of copper await the miner, and one after another are being opened and worked. The parts of these three States alluded to are but sparsely settled, and communications are insufficient to meet the demand for transportation. Railroads are wanted, as the existing wagon roads are unfitted for heavy hauling; these circumstances increase very much the difficulties in the way of mining enterprises. Notwithstanding this, the success of some of the mines of this section is an established fact, and Ducktown has for some years held a high rank among the copper-producing localities of the United States. Of all these deposits, however, none is more interesting or more deserving of attention than the one now under consideration. The works of the Ore Knob Copper Company have been energetically pushed forward, since the reopening of the mine, in the spring of 1873, by Mr. J. E. Clayton, the superintendent and one of the chief owners of the property, and if one thing more than another can insure success it is the combination in this gentleman of rare business capabilities with the deepest personal interest in the pros¬perity of the undertaking. The copper vein -at Ore Knob* is a clearly defined fissure traversing the gneissic rocks of Pre-silurian age in a direction 61° east of north. * The reader is referred to a paper by Dr. T. THIS remarkable mine, to which attention has lately been drawn, is situated not far from the New River, in Ashe County, North Carolina, on a spur of the Blue Ridge which lies between the main crest of this name and the so-called Iron Mountain, a part of the Unaka or Smoky Mountain range. It is on a true fissure-lode, which cuts the strata of gneiss and mica-schist of the region. These, which have the lithological characters of what I have called the Montalban or White Mountain series, have here a dip of about forty-five degrees to the southeast, while the lode is vertical, with a course north 60° east. Both the country-rock and the lode, as is usual in this region, are decomposed to considerable depths ; and the latter exhibits a cap of hydrous peroxide of iron or gossan, blocks of which, left by the denudation of the softer inclosing rock, are scattered over the surface, and first called attention to the locality as a source of iron ore. In sinking upon this lode, it was found that the porous gossan at a certain depth became charged with carbonate and red oxide of copper, and lower down was replaced by sulphuretted ores of this metal of remarkable richness. This deposit was worked for copper, in an irregular manner, before the late civil war, but was afterwards abandoned, and only reopened during the present year, by Messrs. S. S. & J. E. Clayton, of Baltimore. The outcrop has been traced for 1900 feet, and the sulphuretted copper ores have been met with in five shafts in a distance of 661 feet, a drift having moreover been carried for the above distance through the solid ore. The breadth of the lode, so far as opened, varies from six to eight feet to fourteen feet in places, and that of the outcrop of gossan is, in some parts, twenty feet. After comparing this deposit with the copper mines of Ducktown, Polk County, Tennessee, and those of Carroll County, Virginia, it is evident that we have, at Ore Knob, to do with the same kind of black ores as were met with in these mines, and will be noticed further on. Beneath the gossan, at Ore Knob, is found, in some parts, an iron-black, friable, drusy, crystalline, sulphuretted ore, inclosing grains of quartz, garnet, and magnetite, besides a black non-magnetic mineral, not attacked by nitric acid. White, "The Mining Town," Alta California, August 18,1873 Textbooks in mining engineering have traditionally covered ore reserve estimation and mine valuation in a single volume. Indeed, Examination and Valuation of Mineral Property by R. D. Parks (1957), having been the standard of the profession for over 20 years, is a classic example. However, the state of knowledge in these two fields has grown tremendously. Most mining engineering curricula now cover these topics in separate courses, and in practice, these tasks are usually performed by different individuals. Thus, this trend now suggests the need for separate, specialized publications rather than a single volume for both topics. Because of the separate development of the science of ore reserve estimation, it is important to state at the beginning what this chapter does not cover. It does not address in detail the design of sampling programs, sampling methods, or the processing of samples or sample data compilation. There are a number of suitable references available on these topics, including Peters (1978), Gy (1979), as well as the previously cited book by Parks. Furthermore, this chapter does not cover in any substantial detail either the traditional methods for using sample data to calculate ore reserves or the more recently developed geostatistical methods. The traditional methods are thoroughly covered by Popoff (1966) and more concisely by Barnes (1980). Among the more useful references for statistical applications in ore reserve estimation are Barnes (1980), David (1977), and Clark (1979). A thoughtful review of the entire science and art of ore reserve estimation is provided by King, McMahon, and Bujtor (1982). In spite of the fact that expansion of knowledge now calls for separate books on ore reserve estimation and financial evaluation, neither publication can ignore the important interrelationships between the two fields. In regard to this text, the unique and crucial role of ore reserves can not be omitted entirely; however, the field is now simply too extensive to treat here in any comprehensive manner.

The average daily yield is now one hundred tons of lead bars, in which the silver and gold of the ore is concentrated. The value of this lead, called "bullion," is about $300 per ton. To produce this quantity of metal, about four times the weight of ore, or say four hundred tons, is required. THE lead and zinc region of SW. Missouri is interesting, not only by reason of the value of its output, which ranges in the neighborhood of ten million dollars a year, but even more because of the facilities which it offers for the study of certain forms of ore-deposits, of which the loci and genesis are somewhat obscure. Although the mineral species found in the region are few and of common occurrence, crystallization has taken place on a generous scale, and unusual forms abound in many combinations, presenting examples of pseudomorphism, paragenesis, metasomatic replacement and the action of mineral-depositing and mineral-dissolving waters. For the mineralogist, lithologist, and specialist in certain lines of metamorphism, it has peculiar attractions, while the systematic geologist will perhaps find its chief claim to attention in the simplified problem it presents, in the study of ore-deposits. In addition to the phenomena above enumerated, it presents instances of well-developed comb-structure in the ores, fissures and faults, and slickensides-features usually associated with extensive movements in the earth's crust, and believed by some authorities to prove the deep-seated origin of the ores. In connection with these occurrences, the absence of all igneous rocks from this region is noteworthy and significant. For that reason, the simplified case presented by the Joplin region, from which these rocks have been eliminated as a factor, is specially valuable. Having had unusual opportunities to watch the development of this district, I have been deeply interested in the bearing of the revelations of the Joplin mines upon questions of universal importance to the science of ore-deposits ; and it was to my great regret that the project of a meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers at Joplin, proposed in 1892, was

BINGHAM has produced 6 per cent. of this country's copper. In total production, it ranks fourth among the copper camps of North America, the order being Butte, Michigan, Bisbee, and Bingham. In its annual production, it held that same rank until 1919, when its production was exceeded by the combined production of the Globe-Miami district of Arizona. Bingham has also been a lead camp of the first order. Utah ranks third among the lead-producing states, and its production comes largely from three camps which, in the order of their productivity, are: Bingham, Tintic, Park City. Bingham's silver production is important, but it does not rank high as a silver producer. Utah owes its rank as first among the silver-producing states to Tintic, a camp 40 miles due south of Bingham. The United States Mineral Resources reports a total production from Bingham for the period 1865-1920 having a gross value of $528,043,432. Bingham is on the eastern flank of the Oquirrh range 30 miles south-west of Salt Lake City, from which it can be reached in an hour by auto, or by the Denver & Rio Grande or the Bingham & Garfield railroads.. The automobile route is a paved road across the floor of Great Salt Lake Valley, through farming country. The Bingham & Garfield railway leaves the level of Great Salt Lake at the northern end of the Oquirrh range, and in 20 miles it climbs 2100 ft., and deposits the traveler upon a shelf cut in the side of Bingham Canyon below most of the mines, which are farther up Bingham Canyon and its tributary Carr Fork. Below lies the town, a narrow ribbon running for a couple of miles along the bottom of a canyon 2000 ft. deep-an almost impossible site for a community numbering, in prosperous times, 5000 to 7000 inhabitants drawn from all quarters of the globe. Up the canyon and down, and beneath the steep slopes nearby, and beneath the town itself, are the mining operations of over half a century.

THE gains of society from the state of primitive conditions in the past to the standard of living which prevails in the advanced countries today have been accomplished mainly by the increasing productive capacity of the population under the leadership and services of the engineer. Without improvements in the arts and industries the growth of population tends to place succeeding generations always at a disadvantage. In this country we have been exploiting with reckless prodigality a wealth of soil and minerals and timber that has been in preparation for thousands of years. We know that the prices of all national products have been advancing, and were on a rising scale even before the phenomenal increases resulting from the war. Over against this depletion of natural wealth we have the influence of improvements made in the methods of production and distribution-and the accumulation of wealth in the form of productive equipment. The net result of these opposing influences determines whether society moves forward or backward.
