FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE STABILITY AND STABILIZATION METHOD The most effective stabilization method and design can only be developed if the cause(s) and mechanics of the slide are known. Therefore, it is important that the stability be evaluated by an engineer who has had extensive rock stability experience. The most important factors that influence stability are structural geology, ground water, blasting and the mining method or methods. Structural Geology - The majority of failures in rock slopes occur along discontinuities in the rock (joints, bedding planes, shear or fault zones, etc.). Therefore, on all surface mining projects, the development and maintenance of a comprehensive structural geologic mapping program should be a first priority program that is considered a part of the operations function. This program should include mapping all major features - faults, shear zones and through going joints. All structural features which could influence stability should be mapped and presented in a structural domain format for the entire mine (Canmet, 1977). Where planes, wedges or blocks will be undercut by the mining excavation, shear strength and strain to failure tests should be performed on the joints, fault gouge and gouge-rock contact surfaces. These tests must be performed on the samples in the direction of potential slide movement and must determine the range of peak and residual shear strength values. A preliminary assessment of friction angle can be obtained from measurements of failed surfaces in the field (Figure 1) or from core sliding tests (Barton, 1981). GRINDING for size reduction affects the economics of many processes and products. It is essential as the first step in many industrial processes and is also a finishing step for materials with properties depending on particle size, such as talc, cement, and silica sand. Intermediate and fine grinding are vital operations in the U. S. cement industry, which is producing more than 250 million bbl of cement per year.1 Wear of the grinding media is a large part of the grinding operation cost. Problems encountered in grinding cement are so complex that evaluation of efficiency and economy of grinding media is difficult.2 It has been especially difficult to evaluate the relative effectiveness of different types of balls because there are no good testing techniques.

Expanding markets and technological investigations now in progress for commercial production of titanium metal and alloys, as well as expanding uses for the oxide, have resulted in greater production, increased prices, and accelerated search for additional commercial occurrences of titanium minerals. For more than 50 years rutile has been used in moderate quantities in ceramics, in the production of ferrotitanium, as well as nonferrous titanium alloys. During the early 1930's, use of pure titanium dioxide was introduced as an ingredient of coatings for electric welding rods. For technical and economic reasons rutile was soon found to be as good or better for mild steel welding rods, and this use continues to account for a good share of the rutile sales in the U. S.

R. S. Handy (Santa Rosa, Calif.)—It would be interesting to learn the comparative results of treating the Korean scheelite ore described in this paper according to the following procedure: I—Follow the procedure described in the paper to the recovery of the sulphides by flotation. 2—Dilute the residue from the sulphide flotation strongly with water and disperse the contained colloids by adding a mixture of 75 pct sodium silicate and 25 pct quebracho to dispersion point. 3— Settle the dispersed pulp and decant the supernatant colloids. 4—-Dilute, settle, and decant the pulp until the settled residue is crystalline. Not over 10 pct of the tungsten minerals should follow the colloids. 5—Treat the settled residue by flotation, having established the proper pH. Oleic acid homogenized with cresylic acid or kerosene is more selective for scheelite than is oleic acid alone. (The recovery of the contained tungsten minerals should be practically complete in this operation.) 6—Deflocculate the tungsten concentrate from step 5 with the same dispersion agents as in step 2 and treat the deflocculated pulp by gravity. The minerals that tend to float with scheelite are generally of low specific gravity and the separation is efficient. The heavier contaminants, such as pyrrhotite and magnetite can be removed magnetically, leaving a practically pure scheelite. E. J. Pryor (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London)—It occurred to me that instead of using temperature as a differentiating control, more precision might be obtained with a reagent of a type we developed here for the flotation of high grade fluorspar in cold pulps. This reagent, which is manufactured on a modest scale in England, is based on oleic acid, which has been modified by our patented process to ensure complete stable dispersion at any desired concentration in water. It thus becomes possible to utilise unimolecular layers with good selectivity. In the fluorspar flotation for which we developed it, it is possible to hold a tight control on depressing quebracho for the calcite without substantial loss of flu-orite, and recovery exceeding 99 pct is not uncommon in the mill where it is in use, even under wintry conditions. Economics has been defined as the useful application of wealth or material resources. The search of alchemists in the Middle Ages for s formula by which base metals might be transmuted into gold was no more intensive than has been the search by all branches of the oil industry for methods whereby the rnatcrial resources of West Texas in the nature of sulfur-bearing oil might be usefully applied. The purpose of this paper is to present in brief space developments that are conceded to possess economic significance. History The first discovery of oil in commercial quantities in the Permian Basin of West Texas was the Westbrook field in Mitchell County in 1920. Three years later the discovery well in the Big Lake field was cornpleted as a small pumper (70 bbl.) at a depth of 3028 ft. In 1925, discovery of the Powell or World pool in Crockett County stimulated activities in the Permian Basin, further establishing the importance of the Permian limestones as sources of production. The years 1925 and 1926 were marked by a period of extensive leasing and drilling activities. At the close of 1926 more than 7,000,000 acres had been leased and discovery wells completed in the Hurdle, Hendricksand Yates fields, definitely establishing the importance of the Permian Basin as a source of production from free-flowing wells. Review of Fields The producing fields in the Permian Basin are grouped on three distinct lines of folding. These may be separately identified as the Big Lake-Powell fold; the Yates, Hurdle, and Church-McElroy area and the Winkler County development. Production is derived from a porous limestone stratigraphically uniform, encountered at depths varying from 900 to 3100 ft. Ore production from the property of the Miami Copper Co. began early in 1911. Until 1925 this ore came from the so-called high-grade orebodies, which contained a little over 2 per cent. copper. This ore was mined by the following methods: 1. Top slicing after mining the peaks by square setting, which produced 4,524,347 tons, including ore from square setting. 2. Shrinkage stoping with sublevel caving of the pillars, which produced 2,230,577 tons. 3. Undercut caving with hand tramming, which produced 15,427,672 tons. Estimating December tonnage, the total ore mined to the end of 1929 will amount to slightly more than 43,000,000 tons. The first method was described by E. G. Deane' and the second by D. B. Scott,' and the third, together with a general description of the mine, by J. H. Hensley, Jr.' The geology of the district has been worked out by Dr. F. L. Ransome.2 The author acknowledges also the assistance of R. W. Hughes, assistant mine superintendent, E. V. Graybeal, chief mine engineer, A. J. McDermid and S. R. Burdick, engineers of Miami Copper Co., Miami, Arizona. Factors Influencing Selection of Mining Methods The mining method described herein was selected primarily with a low mining cost in view and was developed to avoid as far as possible dilution of the already very low-grade ore. In 1924, with the exhaustion of the high-grade orebodies in sight, it was decided to develop the low-grade orebody, which at that time contained 36,000,000 tons of ore assaying 1.06 per cent. copper, and had an area of 50 acres with an average thickness of 206 ft. overlain by an average thickness of 320 ft. of barren capping.

8.5-1. Bucket Line Dredge. INTRODUCTION. The modern bucket-line dredge for mining placer deposits is a combined floating excavating machine and a gravity concentration system. Material is excavated at the forward end by the buckets, elevated, washed and screened, concentrated for recovery of valuable mineral, and discharged off the stern as coarse and small fractions. The end product is a concentrate consisting either of the valuable mineral(s) and associated heavy minerals, which are taken to a treatment plant on shore; or in the case of gold, a clean amalgam ready for retorting. The bucket-line dredge may be adapted for purposes other than mining for valuable mineral by installing, in lieu of a concentrating system, machinery for pumping all of the solids ashore in a pulp, or for producing washed gravel in selected size fractions of which all or a selected fraction is pumped to disposal areas on shore or into side barges. The two principal types of bucket-line dredges designed for mining are: 1) those having an inclined belt conveyor stacker to discharge the coarse fraction of washed tailing well astern of the hull, and sluices to discharge the sand fraction (Fig. 8.5-1), and 2) those having only sluices for discharge of all tailing astern. Use of the latter type has been confined, with few exceptions, to mining cassiterite-bearing deposits in Malaysia and at sea off Indonesia. Small dredges having only flumes for washing and concentrating all material dug by the buckets have been used for mining shallow stream valley deposits. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT. The general arrangement of a modern bucket-line dredge for mining tin, with a primary concentrating plant on board, is shown in Fig. 8.5-2. The hull and superstructure of most dredges are fabricated of structural steel; wood also has been used for both small and large dredges with complete satisfaction. BY rapidly cooling alloys from the liquid state, it is possible to obtain solid solutions beyond the equilibrium concentrations, provided that the components are miscible in the liquid state. Typical such cases include CU-Ag,1 Pt-Ag,2 CU-Rh,3 nickel-base alloys with silicon, germanium, and tin,4 and cobalt-base alloys with silicon, germanium, tin, aluminum, and gallium.5 In the present note it is shown that terminal solid solutions can be appreciably extended in A1-Mg alloys. The alloys whose compositions are given in Table I were prepared by induction melting in tantalum crucibles under an argon atmosphere. Both aluminum and magnesium were 99.99 pct pure. Weight losses after melting were less than 0.2 pct for the aluminum-rich alloys and less than 0.4 pct for the magnesium-rich alloys. From these weight losses it was estimated that the compositions of the ingots after melting were accurate within 0.3 at. pct for aluminum-rich alloys and within 0.5 at. pct for magnesium-rich alloys. As indicated in Table I, the compound AuCd10 in which there is an ionic contribution to the bonding. The authors thank Dr. J. H. Westbrook of the Research Laboratory, General Electric Co., for arranging the supply of materials and for his interest. This investigation was supported by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT(30-1)-1002, Scope I. some of the alloys were also chemically analyzed and the results confirmed the limits of uncertainty based on weight losses. Rapid quenching from the liquid state was achieved by techniques previously described.8,7 The principle of these techniques consists of propelling a small globule of liquid alloy (about 20 mg) onto a copper substrate. The thin foils easily detached from the copper substrate were analyzed by X-ray diffraction using a Debye-Scherrer camera 114.6 mm in diameter and either nickel-filtered copper Ka or iron-filtered cobalt Ka radiation. Since the back-reflection doublets were resolved, the wavelengths used in the computatioas were CuKal = 1.54050A and CoKa1= 1.78892A. I DISAGREE with Mr. Brinsmade on several points, and I will discuss his remarks under the same six topics which he has used. 1. Rate of Interest Earned by Sinking-Fund.-I believe Mr. Brinsmade is confused in his ideas as to the effect of new gold on the interest earned on money. The flood of gold which he mentions certainly should not operate, to increase interest rates, but since it replaces and adds to liquid capital should reduce interest rates and counteract the destruction of liquid capital which he mentions. Furthermore, it is doubtful if the destruction of capital since 1897 by wars and catastrophes has been any greater in proportion than in similar periods before 1897. With regard to savings banks, I would say that only 3 per cent. is allowed on deposits through a large part of the West. As to bonds, they can be bought to yield any rate. of interest desired up to 6 per cent., but, a 5 per. cent. bond is not as safe as a 4 per cent. bond, nor a 4 per cent. bond as safe as a 3 per cent. government security. I do not understand why Mr. Brinsmade says that Mr. Denny's quoted opinion of a 3 per cent. rate is evidently based on English conditions before the Boer War. Certainly there is no reference to the Boer war or to English conditions in Mr. Denny's article. M. Howard Burnham, in his admirable work on mine valuation, says': ". For instance, redemption is taken at 3 per cent., because even 4 per cent. represents a greater risk, as is indicated by the purchase of Government paper to bear only 3 per cent., the great desideratum of the .latter being security." . Again, Mr. Burnham says:2 "The tables are calculated on the assumption that the dividends shall accumulate at 3 per cent. only, as in accordance with the general idea set out elsewhere, a rate greater than 3 per cent. involves appreciable risk with which it were inaccurate to saddle the sinking-fund if risks are to be segregated, this being the basis of all the writer's calculations."

IN 1938 Ralston4 reviewed the many attempts to find a satisfactory collector for the separation of cassiterite from its ores and in 1944 Dean and Ambrose2 summarized some further attempts. Generally, soaps and amines are effective but nonselective collectors. We have discovered that reagents containing either the polar group -SO4- or _S03- are excellent collectors for cassiterite and promise to be selective.1 The response to these reagents of cassiterite and of minerals commonly associated with it was studied, using the captive-bubble technique. Using these fundamental data, the practicability of separation and concentration of tin was investigated by flotation tests in a 2000gram Denver cell. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Reagents All inorganic reagents were of Analar grade. The preparation and purification of sodium cetyl sulphate, cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide, laurylamine and cetylamine have been previously described.5 The other collectors were commercial surface-active agents, which were used without purification. Tests Captive-bubble Tests and Cylinder Flotation Tests have been previously described.5-10 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible, by a cross, and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, and the experimental results are indicated by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solutions in which flotation in a cell would be possible but many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery and grade of a given mineral in practice. About four years ago the writer proposed a revision of the correlation of the Huronian formations in Michigan, and noted the bearing of the question on the correlations of the Huronian rocks in Wisconsin and Minnesota.1 Dr. C. K. Leith opposed this revision and argued for the retention of the correlations of the United States Geological Survey, published in 1911,2 for which he and Dr. Van Hise were mainly responsible. As late as June, 1917, Harder and Johnson, following Leith, thought it "premature to change radically a correlation based on years of careful field work."3 The work of Wolff on the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges, of Hotchkiss on the Gogebic Range (unpublished), and of the writer and assistants on the Michigan ranges, together with data developed by exploratory and mining operations, has introduced so many new facts not recognized in the scheme of the U. S. Geological Survey that the correlations of 1911 must be considered, in some important respects, obsolete. Indeed, new data are accumulating so rapidly that any classification, which for the moment may seem best to explain the facts, is almost immediately modified or refined by further observations. The problem of Huronian correlations is difficult, but interesting and important. With the aid of fossils, stratigraphers of the post-Algonkian formations have been able to show that slight disconformities mag separate strata of vastly different ages, and that within physically conformable strata may be concealed a hiatus of great magnitude. In the non-fossiliferous Huronian group, minor physical breaks in the strata are only beginning to attract attention, and it is too early to discuss what bearing these will have in correlating the formations of one area with those of another, but it is safe to say that the "lost intervals" which are not disclosed by physical relationships will remain forever lost; therefore we may not hope to discover the ultimate truth concerning the

Such control to be effective must be premised upon complete military occupation of the two countries for a substantial period, with an arrangement at the end of such occupation for continued supervision of these industries into an indefinite future.

An attempt is made to explain the effect of stress on strain aging by examining the mechanism of yielding for a group of aged dislocations. The experimental results on which the theory is based indicate that a linear relationship develops between the aging stress and the discontinuous yield effect in a low carbon steel THE discontinuous yield effect that occurs in bcc metals after strain aging is usually explained by the interaction of interstitial atoms with individual dislocations. Attempts have been made to interpret the kinetics of strain aging in terms of interstitial segregation to nonrandom groups of dislocations1-3 but apart from Li's4 work little or no effort has been made to examine the effect of groups of aged dislocations on mechanical properties. It appears likely that such groups can be stabilized if a positive load is maintained on the specimen during aging5 and, furthermore, that the enhanced strain aging effect associated with aging under load might be due to the stability of these aged groups. The effects associated with this latter phenomenon have been described by Almond and Hull, Ref. 5, Figs. 2 and 3, and it is found that the upper yield stress, the lower yield stress, and the yield point elongation are increased by aging under load. The yield point elongation reaches a maximum value but the enhanced effect persists in the upper and lower yield stress values even after extended aging treatments when the general level of the flow stress curve rises. The flow stress, as measured at 8.5 pct total strain, however, is independent of aging stress. Almond and Hull5 showed that it was unlikely that the differences in mechanical properties could be caused by stress enhanced diffusion and they suggested that the effect was in some way associated with the different dislocation distributions that are obtained when specimens are aged with and without an applied stress. At that time no explanation was offered for the strengthening effect produced by stabilized dislocation distributions but additional tests have been performed to establish a quantitative relationship between aging stress and mechanical properties, and also to examine more closely the effect of varying the procedure for applying the aging stress. EXPERIMENTAL The material used was an iron wire containing 0.015 wt pct C, 0.002 wt pct N, and 0.006 wt pct 0. Tensile specimens with a 1 cm gage length and 0.08 cm diam were annealed at 850°C for 1 hr in vacuum to establish a grain diameter of 0.032 mm and then aged at 200°C for 24 hr. After this treatment the amount of carbon left in solution would be less than 10-4 wt pct, and ni- as aging time is increased. It is suggested that this observation, and effects that arise from varying the method of applying the aging stress, can be explained by a strengthening mechanism whereby dislocations are more difficult to move when they are aged in piled-up groups. trogen would be the main cause of strain aging. Tensile tests were performed in a hard beam machine at a constant crosshead speed of 0.02 cm per min and the specimen chamber was immersed in a temperature controlled silicone oil bath at 32" * 0.05"C. RESULTS All specimens were prestrained 5 pct before aging under stress and the results in Figs. 1 to 5 show the effect of aging time and aging stress on the following parameters ?UY = auy — ?F(5); i.e., the difference between the upper yield stress after aging,?uy, and the flow stress after prestraining 5 pct, ?f(5). ?LY = sly —sf(5); the difference between the lower yield stress after aging, ojy, and the flow stress after prestraining 5 pct. s8.5 = the flow stress at 8.5 pct total strain after aging at 5 pct strain. Varying the Loading Procedure. Three variations in the procedure for applying the aging stress were examined; i) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to a stress of 18 kg mm-2, aged at that stress, and then tested. ii) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to 2 kg mm-" then reloaded to 18 kg mm-', aged at that stress, and tested. iii) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to 18 kg mm-', aged at that stress, then unloaded to 2 kg mm- before testing. On April 1, 1937, Burma, formerly a province of the Indian Empire, was formally separated from India and became an independent unit of the British Commonwealth. In future, therefore, statistics of oil production in India will exclude Burma and those for Burma will be separately published. The last few years have been marked by noteworthy, almost spectacular, developments in the oil fields of Burma and the Punjab. In Burma these developments have been the proving of unexpected extensions of the existing fields and not the discovery of entirely new fields. The new extensions are important not only to Burma in giving a new lease of life to her fields, but also in general as stressing some interesting geological aspects hitherto neglected. Production The production of crude oil in Imperial gallons has been: Burma India 1934 254,760,070 67,265,210 1935 251,338,974 . 71,323,362 1936 265,656,393 69,241,504 1937 (eat.) 270,000,000 70,000,000 The Chindwin Fields.—The small field at Indaw continues to produce steadily about 3,000,000 gal. a year, but no really deep test has yet been successfully carried out and resources are thus not yet fully known. The remote location of the field, inaccessible except by river and situated 22 miles from the Chindwin 270 miles up that river from its junction with the Irrawaddy, has not encouraged active exploitation. The field is worked exclusively by the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co., Ltd. (I.B.P.), using now an automatic gas-lift system, and the company formerly refined the oil at a small refinery at Pantha on the river near by. The chief market was for kerosene in upper Burma. The refinery has now been closed. The oil is stored on the field during the low-water season

Y.-I do not care to discuss Mr. Taggart's paper in the light of theory, as that has been very well done by Prof. Bell,1 but I should like to criticize some of his conclusions, in the light of actual operating practice at plants all over the country. 1. Mr. Taggart's first conclusion is that in crushing average ore, the character of the gangue has little effect on the efficiency of the mill. This, I believe, is not in accordance with the usual practice, since in crushing a hard ore the capacity will be much reduced below what it would be with a softer ore, while the power consumed will be practically independent of the character of the ore, being proportional only, to the load of ore and balls in the mill. 2. Mr. Taggart's second criticism is that the Hardinge mill is not suitable for grinding soft, tough material. In answer to this I might mention that the mill is being used for grinding tough, dnctile material, such as metallic aluminum, and also for grinding licorice root. 3. He says that the ball-mill works more efficiently on material of intermediate size, say 1/2 to 3/4 in., than on either coarser or finer feed.. This is true as to coarser feed. For the most efficient work, I believe that a ball-mill should be fed with material not coarser than 1 1/2 in.; it' will handle material up to 3 and even 4 in., but the reduction from 3 or 4 in. to 1 1/2 in. can be done much more cheaply and efficiently by rolls or disk crushers than in the ball-mill. 4. As to Mr. Taggart's fourth conclusion, that a greater ratio of reduction can be expected with feed of an intermediate size than with a coarse feed, I have not enough information to express an opinion. 5. His next conclusion is that steel balls are much more efficient crushing media than pebbles. Steel balls are undoubtedly more efficient for crushing coarse feed. On fine material they are also more efficient as to tons per horsepower crushed to 10-mesh, but on fine material I think it will be found that flint pebbles are cheaper than cast-iron balls, per ton of ore, although there will be a saving in power per ton by using cast iron instead of flint. The increased cost of crushing with cast iron will be due to the higher cost of iron at the present time. 6. Mr. Taggart's sixth conclusion coincides with present practice, that steel balls will grind as fine or finer than pebbles when working on the same feed.

Bituminous coal has for many years been used for the smelting of iron-ores in the blast-furnace. In some districts in Scotland it is used alone, in others it is used mixed with coke. The similar use of certain bituminous coals in the United States has been repeatedly mentioned in the Transactions. (See, for instance, as to the Hocking Valley coal, the papers of Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, Trans., ii., 275, and vii., 313; and as to Indiana "block-coal," the paper of Mr. J. S. Alexander, Trans., i., 225.) Phillips (Elements of Metallurgy, p. 250) says: " Raw coal for blast-furnace use must be of a non-cokiog kind, and, when of suitable quality, is perhaps the most advantageous fuel." In the first

A self-appointed, committee consisting of J. Waldo Smith, Chairman, Richard S. Buck, J. J. Carty, J. Parke Channing, E. L. Corthell, Alfred Craven, Thomas Crimmins, Gano Dunn, George Gibbs, Alex. C. Humphreys, F. L. Hutchinson, Charles Warren Hunt, D. S. Jacobus, John W. Lieb, William Barclay Parsons, George H. Pegram, Charles F. Rand, Calvin W. Rice, Robert Ridgway, William L. Saunders, Merritt H. Smith, Bradley Stoughton, and William H. Wiley, organized a course of seven free lectures on military engineering, which were given by Captains Thomas M. Robins, Richard T. Coiner, Edward D. Ardery, Corps of Engineers, United States Army, and which was under direction of Major General Leonard Wood. The United Engineering Society presented, without charge, the use of the auditorium for the purpose of these lectures, but the interest proved to be more than three times as much as had been expected, and it was therefore necessary to divide the courses into three parts, one of which was given in the afternoon in the auditorium of the United Engineering Societies Building, one in the evening in the same place, and another in the evening in the auditorium of, the American Society of Civil Engineers. These lectures occurred on Mondays, from Feb. 14 to Mar. 27, 1916. The subjects and speakers were as follows: Feb. 14, 1916: Organization and Duties of Engineers in War, and what Engineers in Civil Life will be called upon to do in the Defence Of the United States. IRWIN W. ALCORN, present Chairman of the Petroleum Division, was born Sept. 5, 1899 at Marietta, Ohio, and moved with his family to Robinson, Ill., at the time of the early oil development there. This was in the days of the Star spudders, mud, mules, and Stanley steamers. Al graduated from Robinson High School after participation in basket ball, also attaining the captaincy of the football team of that school. He entered Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1918 and was ushered by the Army into the S.A.T.C. In 1920 he transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, later to return to receive his B.S. degree -in metallurgy at Rolla, also joining the AIME. On graduation, he worked for the Skelly Oil Co. at Cushing, Okla., shifting to the Moore Refining Co. at DeNoya, Okla., as superintendent of a small pipe-line system. After an interval of two years with the National Supply Co. in Tulsa, he joined the Independent Oil and Gas Co. of that city, and at various times was chief engineer of the Texas division, superintendent of the West Texas pipe-line system, chief engineer of pipe-line construction, and chief engineer of the refining division. Al organized the Company's production engineering department. In 1930 the Company was merged with the Phillips Petroleum Co. The depression was in and Al was out, 'as was true nine months later when the Smith Separator Co. whose chief engineer he had become, was liquidated.
