The anthracite industry, which produces about 50 million net tons of coal annually, has been talked of as being able to last for another century; but if the water record of the past century continues into the expected century, this expectation of many years production still to come out of the remaining reserves will not be attained. The industry will be a submerged one in fact as well as in name. A recorded forecast of what has since occurred appears on page 34 of the Mine Inspectors' reports of 1897: It should also be noticed that bodies of water had accumulated in parts of abandoned mines before duplicate surveys of the same were required by law; and as a result we have today to contend with bodies of water, the exact location and position of which are not correctly known. Since that date, 47 years ago, the implications of the foregoing comment have grown enormously. In the period between 1923 and 1940, abandonment of collieries in the southern field resulted in the flooding of approximately 60 sq. miles (30 per cent) of the field. The ahandonment of collieries in this field has imposed additional expense for pumping on the collieries still operating. This condition will be aggravated by the extension of developments and cause suspension of operations if economic conditions do not justify the assumption of additional pumping costs. During the years, the region's rainfall has not altered, but the quantity going inside the mines through breakages in the surface, brought about by extraction of the coal, has increased materially, as indicated by the ratio of tons of water pumped to tons of coal produced underground for one of the large companies in the northern anthracite field: Year Ratio 1920................. 8.4:1 1925.................. 10.6:I I930.................. Rainfall quickly affects the workings in all the fields. In mine inspection district 7 of the southern field the rainfall in 1935 was 92,083,000,000 gal. WHEN it came time to write a biography of Philip Kraft, we got out a copy of Bartlett's "Familiar Quotations" and looked through the references to Travel, Traveled, Traveler, and Traveling, feeling sure there would be some reference to Mr. Kraft. Sure enough, we found: "Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience." Had Francis Bacon done his writing three and a half centuries later, Mr. Kraft might well have served as the inspiration for that sentence. New Yorker born, he received his B.S. and E. M. degrees from Columbia. In 1912, then 22 years old, he took off for Germany where he spent two years studying at the Royal School of Mines, Berlin, for his Doctor of Engineering degree. Contrary to the Greeley-Soule precept, Mr. Kraft, on his return from Europe, went north to South Porcupine. Ont., working as geologist and mining engineer for the Dome Mine. From South Porcupine his next stop was Washington, D. C., where, during the years the country was in the first World War, he was engaged in war work.

R. S. Shoemaker: Our first question is, is there a need for a grizzly before a primary crusher? What is its effect on crusher capacity and crusher maintenance? Is it worth the extra capital cost in a crusher installation? Vincent: ASARCO has a grizzly at Mission. Utah Copper uses grizzlies ahead of their gyratories. There is some quite abrasive ore at Mission, an argillite type of rock, which has a work index of 16.5 to 20, which is getting up toward the taconite classification. We get a life of 12- 16 million tons per set of concaves or per mantle with the grizzly ahead of the crusher. At Duval Corp., some 6 miles to the south of Mission, their crusher installation on a good, hard rock does not have a grizzly, and the last information I had is they get a life of about 2 ½ -3 million tons on their mantle and concave. At Silver Bell, our other copper unit in Arizona, they do not have a grizzly ahead of the gyratory and there they get a life of about 5-6 million tons. At Utah Copper, which we all know is a fairly soft ore, relatively speaking, they get a life of 24-27 million tons with grizzlies ahead of the crushers. I think a grizzly has a very definite effect on the life of the mantle and the concaves. As far as a jaw crusher is concerned, I think that usually it is desirable to have a grizzly if it is properly designed, which means it is self- cleaning. Otherwise I would not like to see one in the circuit.

The importance, validity, and acceptability of the Paley Report has become the great issue of the minerals industry. A 12-man panel made up of representatives of various facets of the industry sat down at the 1952 Mining Congress Show in Denver in an attempt to clarify the many opinions currently held concerning the report. Howard Young, deputy administrator of the Defense Materials Procurement Administration, noted that the report had caused more discussion and serious thinking than any other government report, He did not subscribe to the "have not" principle, however, but called it a "need more" principle. Horace M. Allbright, president of U. S. Potash Corp., believes industry should continue to develop the report. He cited the editorial appearing in the September, 1952 edition of Bining Engineering,,, "Don't Let It Die," as expressing his feelings. Edward Snyder, president of Combined Metals Reduction Corp., says the statistics used in the report were used to promote a false international policy. He sees the report as a master plan for the development of the superstate. He also stated that the-ore reserves given in the Pales, report represent only 10 pct of what is actually available.

The outstanding event of the year 1929 in the Appalachian area was the intensive drilling activity in the Bradford and Richburg pools of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York State, particularly the former, in connection with the continued extension of the five-spot system of water-flooding. More new development work was undertaken and completed than during any previous year since reclamation methods were first applied. This was due in part to an excellent price for oil and in part to discovery of the fact that more intensive methods (five-spotting) yielded greater profit. While several oil wells of comparatively large initial production were completed, no new oil pools of significance were discovered in the Appalachian area during the year. A number of small gas pools were opened in areas already surrounded by producing wells and at least three others in areas located some distance from any producing pools. Petroleum Development According to statistics of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 33,7,57,000 bbl. of petroleum were produced in the Appalachian field during 1929 as compared to 31,060,000 bbl. in 1928.' Of the total 1929 production, 23,391,618 bbl. consisted of Pennsylvania grade oil as compared to 21,096,710 bbl. in 1928. The 1929 Pennsylvania grade production represents an increase of 37.4 per cent. over that of 1924. This increase can be attributed largely to the rapid development of water-flooding in the Bradford and Richburg pools. The Bradford field of northwestern Pennsylvania and adjaccnt portions of New York State experienced the busiest year since the boom days of the early eighties. Wells completed during the year totaled 2679.2 In spite of the high prices asked for acreagc, which in some of the choicest territory has been as high as $6000 an acre, a considerable number of properties changed ownership during the year. There is at present a pronounced tendency to consolidate the great number of small individually operated properties into larger units.

The kinetics of precipitation of copper on iron of various purity were carried out under controlled conditions. The rate of reduction has been correlated with such parameters as copper and hydrogen ion concentration, geometric factors, flow rate, and temperature. The character of the precipitated copper as a function of flow conditions and rate of PreciPitation has been observed under a variety of conditions. ThE precipitation of copper in solution by cementation on a more electropositive metal has been known for many years. Basile valentine' who wrote Currus Triumphalis Antimonii about 1500, refers to this method for extraction of copper. Paracelsus the Great2 who was born about 1493 cites the use of iron to prepare Venus (copper) by the "rustics of Hungary" in the "Book Concerning the Tincture of the Philosophers". Agricola3 in his work on minerals (1546) tells of a peculiar water which is drawn from a shaft near Schmölnitz in Hungary, that erodes iron and turns it into copper. In 1670, a concession is recorded4 as having been granted for the recovery of copper from the mine waters at Rio Tinto in Spain, presumably by precipitation with iron. Much has been published in recent literature on the recovery of copper by cementation, the majority of the articles being on plant practice.5-24 The rest include articles on investigation of the variables involved25-28 and a review of hydrometallurgical copper extraction methods." This literature has established: a) The three principal reactions in the cementation of copper are Cu + Fe — Fe+4 +Cu [ 11 One pound of copper is precipitated by 0.88 lb of iron stoichiometrically. In actual practice about 1.5 to 2.5 lb of iron are consumed. 2Fe+3 + Fe — 3Fe+2 [21 Fe +2H'-Fe+2 + H2 [3] Reactions [2] and [3] are responsible for the consumption of excess iron. Wartman and Roberson'28 have established that Reactions [ I] and [2] are concurrent and much faster than Reaction [3]. b) Acidity control is important in the control of hydrolysis and the excessive consumption of iron. he commercial workable range is approximately from pH = 1.8 to 3." c) Iron consumption is closely related to the amount of ferric iron in solution. Jacobi" reports that, by leaving the pregnant mine waters in contact wi th lump pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) for 3 hr, all the iron was reduced to the bivalent condition and scrap iron consumption was cut to 1.25 lb scrap per pound of copper precipitated. He also reported that SO2 has been used successfully to reduce ferric iron to the ferrous state. d) The ideal precipitant is one that offers a large exposed area and is relatively free of rust. e) High velocities and agitation show a beneficial effect upon the rate of precipitation, as it tends to displace the layer of barren solution adjacent to the iron and also dislodges hydrogen bubbles and precipitated copper to expose new surfaces. Little work, however, has been published on the reaction kinetics of copper precipitation on iron. Cent-nerszwer and Heller20 investigated the precipitation of metallic cations in solutions on zinc plates. They found the cementation reaction to be a first-order reaction. The rate constant was independent of stirring for high stirring rates and they concluded that the rate is governed by a diffusional process at low stirring speeds and by a "chemical" process at higher stirring speeds where the rate reaches a constant value. This conclusion has been challenged by King and Burger30 who could not find any region where the rate was independent of the stirring speed, although the rate constant they had obtained for high stirring speed was greater than the maximum value of the rate constant reported by Centnerszwer and Heller (by a factor of six). King and Burger, therefore, concluded that the rate of displacement of copper was controlled only by diffusion. Cementation of various cations on zinc has been summarized by Engfelder.31 APPARATUS A three-necked distillation flask of 2 000-mm capacity was used as a reaction vessel. A pipet of 10-mm capacity was introduced through one of- the side necks, the sample of sheet iron, mounted in a rigid sample holder, through the other, the stirrer being in the middle as shown in Fig. 1. The whole assembly was immersed in a constant-temperature bath. The stirrer was always placed at the same depth in the solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Reagent-grade cupric sulfate (J. T. Baker Chemical Co., N.J.) was used to make up a stock solution containing 10 g of copper per liter which was then diluted to various concentrations as required. Experimental data were obtained by measuring the amount of copper and iron ions in solution at successive time intervals. The initial volume of the solution was always 2000 ml, 10-ml aliquots being removed each time for chemical analysis. Because the total volume change of the solution was less than 10 pct, no correction was used for solution volume change. Nitrogen was bubbled through the solution before and

INTRODUCTION Feasibility studies indicated that a cratering type stoping method was best suited to the character of the first ore block at Carr Fork. This method known as vertical crater retreat (VCR) has since been modified to a combination cratering and deck blasting using VCR drop raises for initial undercut development . The modified form retains many of the advantages of VCR while allowing high tonnage production blasts which have offset many of the disadvantages. FIRST CONCEPTS AND PREMISES Geologic Considerations The Steep Highland Boy (SHB) skarn orebody, the first of several blocks being developed, is a steeply dipping 70° to 90° limb of a syncline, with a width averaging 25 m (82 ft). The bed has a consistent east-west strike length of over 400 m (1300 ft) and extends from the surface to depths of over 1000 m (3300 ft). The footwall is highly fractured quartzite and the hanging wall grades from garneti te to limes tone and hornfe 1s. Because of the limestone in the hanging wall, the hanging wall appears more competent than the footwall. The ore is garnetite with lenses of massive sulphide and magnetite. The quartzite footwall is highly fractured not only because of the bedding but also due to the folding and intrusion of the quartz monzonite. This irregular footwall outline of some stopes in- creases the likelihood of excessive dilution. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite with some bornite. The garnetite ore is quite variable in terms of compressive strength and drillability. In addition to the sulphide and magnetite lenses, it is transected by clay- altered dikes and major and minor north-east faults. TABLE (1) gives the range and mean strengths of the rocks. Investigating Mining Methods Initial consideration of a suitable mining method centered around maximum safety and efficiency with minimum potential dilution. The following major methods were considered and investigated. Cut and fill mining was eliminated because of low productivity, the cost and problems associated with providing fill, and the relatively unsafe nature of the method. Sublevel caving was rejected due to the unpredictable cavability of the waste and the geometry of the ore body. Conventional sublevel or blasthole methods require excessive development, as fan and ring drills are limited to efficient drilling in the 18 to 25 m range (60 to 80 ft). Mining downdip with equipment drilling small diameter holes would have required eight separate extraction/drill horizons with crosscuts and associated excavation in the main ore block. A study has been made of the creep behavior of ß-NiAl of stoichiometric composition in the temperature range 475" to 775°C. Single crystal tensile specimens were deformed under a constant applied load. From slip line studies and tensile axis rotations it was concluded that the crystals deformed by pencil-glide on (100) and (110) planes with a (100) slip direction. Electron microscope thin-film studies showed evidence for profuse cross-slip, and the dislocation Burgers vector was determined to be (100). There was no tendency for the dislocations to lie in definite slip planes, although a strong alignment of segments of edge dislocations was frequently seen. The activation energy for creep in the temperature range 475" and 775°C was judged to be much lower than that for creep at temperatures above 775°C. It is possible that the rate-controlling process is the thermally activated cross-slip of screw dislocations. In recent years considerable interest has developed in the possible use of high-melting-point intermediate phases for high-temperature applications necessitating good creep resistance. Ordered alloys such as Ni3A1, modified by alloying additions, have received particular attention, culminating in the recent development by Pratt and Whitney of single crystal turbine blades.' The intermediate phase NiAl has considerable theoretical interest from a creep standpoint because not only is it ordered up to the melting point (-1650°C at stoichiometry) but it contains a high concentration of structural vacancies on the aluminum-rich side of stoichiometry. These vacancies are known to exert a strengthening effect under some conditions,' but in addition they might be expected to affect high-temperature creep rates through dislocation climb. The present paper deals with the slip line and dislocation structures developed during creep of stoichiometric NiAl between 475" and 775C, and with possible attendant creep mechanisms. MATERIALS AND TEST TECHNIQUES NiAl ingots of stoichiometric composition were prepared by induction melting 99.996 pct A1 and 99.98 pct Ni (kindly provided by the Kaiser Aluminum Co. and the International Nickel Co., respectively) in 100 cc pure alumina crucibles in a helium atmosphere. No chemical melting flux was used in order to avoid con- tamination of the alloy. Each ingot was slowly direc-tionally solidified to avoid porosity and to produce very large grains up to 2 in. in length. In this way, ingots were obtained which were suitable for sectioning into single crystal creep specimens. Chemical analysis indicated that all alloys were within the range 49.6 0.3 at. pct Ni. For the present investigation, identical rectangular single crystal blanks were cut vertically from one particularly large crystal in an ingot using a series of three diamond cut-off wheels with appropriate spacers. Thus, all sliced crystals had the same orientation with the tensile axis parallel to the long side of the rectangle; the initial orientation of the tensile axis is shown as S, in Fig. 1. The blanks were homogenized at 1250 to 1300°C for 48 hr and subsequently cooled slowly to room temperature. A gage length of rectangular cross section and about 0.75 in. in length was prepared on each specimen using an electrolytic lathe and a dilute nitric/phosphoric acid electrolyte. The gage length cross section was 0.250 0.0005 in. by 0.040 ± 0.0005 in. Holes to accommodate tensile grips were electrolytically machined using a rotating acid jet. After creep testing, this same technique was used to cut discs for transmission electron microscopy. Thus, all shaping was done electrolytically, the only exception being that (122) sections were spark-machined from some speci-

The largest development program in the history of Alberta was undertaken in 1941 in an effort to increase oil production. The drilling record is as follows: In Alberta there was the largest exploratory campaign for oil in the history of the Province, although drilling of wildcat wells was somewhat less than in the previous year. A great deal of geophysical work was done. This included three gravimetric and five seismic parties as well as a number of geological survey parties by the major oil companies and by the Geological Survey of Canada. Seismic work was done by one party in southern Saskatchewan. The production of petroleum in Canada is shown in Table I. About 98 per cent of the total production comes from Alberta and the yield of the various fields is shown in Table 2. The greatest developments in Turner Valley have been in the north end. In 1941 about two miles of new productive area was proved by drilling, extending the field to a length of 20 miles. The wells at the

Internal-friction measurements on hydrogen-charged iron over the temperature range 4° to 300°K are reported. Two relaxation peaks, the hydrogen Snoek peak at 48 °K and the hydrogen cold-work peak in the range 145" to 2200K, are observed at 80 kc per sec. The effects of hydrogen-charging, aging, and deformation on the internal-friction results are determined and are used to show evidence of partitioning of hydrogen between solid solution and dislocations. The hydrogen-dislocation binding energy is estimated from the behaviors of the relaxation tiwzes and relaxation strengths of the Snoek peak and the cold-work peak. Its value is approxi,mately 6400 cal per mole. MANY investigators have demonstrated the usefulness of internal-friction measurements in determining the manner in which interstitial impurities interact with dislocations in bcc metals. Part of this success has resulted from the existence in bcc interstitial alloys of two anelastic relaxation peaks—the Snoek peak' and the cold-work or Koster peak2 (designated hereafter by SP and CWP, respectively). The SP has its origin in the redistribution of interstitials in solid solution among sites made energetically nonequivalent by an applied stress. The rate at which the redistribution occurs, measured by the relaxation time for the process, is related in a simple way to the diffusion rate of the interstitial in the free solution. The relaxation strength is proportional to the concentration of interstitial in solid solution. The CWP appears to have its origin in the relaxation of an interstitial-dislocation complex for which the relaxation time at a given temperature is much longer than that for the SP. The relaxation strength depends strongly on the concentration of interstitial and the amount of deformation at relatively low concentrations and deformations.2-8 From the dependence of the relaxation strength on interstitial concentration, the SP and CWP may serve as measures of the concentrations of interstitials in free solution and bound at dislocations, respectively. Thus their behaviors have been used to investigate interstitial-dislocation interactions in Fe-C, Fe-N, and several refractory metal systems.'-' However, the Fe-H system has not been studied extensively,? even though disputes in recent years over the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in steels involve argument over the extent to which lattice hydrogen and hydrogen-dislocation interactions play an important role.?-'' Previous work on Fe-H indicates the internal-friction behavior to be qualitatively consistent with that for other systems. Apparently, both a SP and a CWP are observed in the temperature ranges 30" to 50°K and 100°to 140°K, respectively (at 1 cps). However, there is neither sufficient nor accurate enough information to identify convincingly these peaks with their supposed counterparts in other systems. Nor have there been any attempts to make quantitative use of these peaks to study hydrogen diffusion, aging, or interaction processes. In this paper, an attempt is made to obtain more complete information on internal friction of hydrogen in iron than presently available. Internal-friction measurements in the range 4° to 300°K on hydrogen-charged iron show that the two peaks discussed above are in fact the hydrogen SP and CWP. Several effects of hydrogen charging, aging, and deformation on these peaks are observed and are used to determine the partitioning of hydrogen between solid solution and dislocation sites in iron. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The starting material for this investigation was a high-purity iron supplied by National Research Corp. as a 1-in.-diam rod.
