The oil industry continued relatively quiet in Wyoming in 1935, although production increased about 8 per cent over the previous year; 55 oil wells were completed in 1935, compared to 34 in 1934, and at the end of the year 44 wells were drilling, 33 in proven fields and 11 in wildcat locations. The total drilling a year ago was only 30. In the year 1935 Wyoming produced a total of 13,451,000 bbl. of oil, a gain of 912,000 bbl. over the 1934 figure of 12,539,000 bbl. Approxi-mately two-thirds of the increase, or 630,000 bbl., was from black oil fields and one-third, or 285,000 bbl., from light oil pools. Salt Creek, with production of 6,357,000 bbl., is still many times the largest field in Wyoming but in 1935 it made less than 50 per cent of the state's total, after producing more than all other fields in the state for 24 years; however, its decline was only 3.8 per cent from the previous year. Oregon Basin, a black oil field, held second place again with production of 1,163,-000 bbl., a good increase over 1934. Grass Creek, with increases in both its light and black oil, jumped into third place; and Lance Creek, with its new Sundance light oil production, was in fourth place in the amount of production. Frannie, which was in third place in 1934, dropped far back on the list because of lack of market. Byron and Garland, two other black oil fields in the Big Horn Basin, increased considerably. Big Muddy, a prominent light-oil field, was down with a natural decline; and Elk Basin, also light oil, produced less because of market conditions. During 1934 only three gas wells were drilled in Wyoming and 29 dry holes, 13 in proven fields and 16 at wildcat locations. Of the latter, 5 were on wildcat structures of considerable interest. Of the 55 wells completed during the year, 53 were in proven fields and of these 17 were small ones in the shallow Osage field and 10 were light-oil wells good for 1500 to 3000 bbl. each in the Lance Creek field. Discoveries Two of the oil wells were discoveries at Medicine Bow and Sheep Creek. Medicine Bow is a very large anticline with more than 3500 ft. of closure and is located in Carbon County in the south-central part of the state. ALTHOUGH it was known some years ago at the- Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65¬mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. EARLIEST USE op MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF TAILINGS As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for micro-scopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral particles or grains may be classified into separate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain no other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are represented (the core may he of chalcopyrite, partially altered to bornite, these two minerals being entirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite.

INTRODUCTION The NIMCIX contactor was developed in the late sixties at the National Institute for Metallurgy in South Africa, for the main purpose of extracting uraniuy from relatively low-grade uranium solutions. ' The concept was sufficiently developed by 1974 to permit the operation of a 1500 litre per minute column to treat unclarified urgnium-bearing solution under industrial conditions. The plant operated so successfully that several large-scale units have subsequent18 teen constructed and are operating efficiently. ' Total resin consumption figures as210w as 3 per cent per annum have been reported, and the extraction efficiencies of the installations have been exceptionally good. All the solutions treated have been acidic in nature and in every case have been of such a nature as to significantly depress the maximum uranium loading on the resin beads. The chemical constituents of the leach solution fed to the loading column determines the ease with which the soluble uranium can be absorbed by an ion exchange resin. The concentration of competing ions and various resin foulants define the nature of the continuous ion exchange equipment required for efficient extraction performance. The basic NIMCIX concept is retained in these various alternate designs, but batch or continuous elution methods with fully automated or manual control systems may be selected for the different process solution conditions. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE NIMCIX CONTACTOR The NIMCIX ion exchange column is a multi-stage fluidized bed contactor which is designed to permit a counter-current flow of solution and resin in order to maximize extraction efficiency. The flow o resin is periodic, based on the Cloete and Streat 5 principle of reverse flow. The basic operating cycle can be divided into five periods, as illustrated in Figure 1. For the purposes of describing the cycle, the loading column is considered; how- ever, a similar sequence may be applied to the operation of a NIMCIX continuous elution column. S'I'EP 1: During the forward flow period, Solution flows up through the column and fluidizes the resin contained in each stage. The uranium depleted solution overflows the upper flared-section of the column as the tail solution. Step 2: The flow of solution to the column is temporarily stopped and the resin is allowed to Settle onto the plates in the column. STEP 3: During the reverse flow period, a fixed volume of solution is drained from the column to the transfer vessel. This flow causes resin transfer to occur from stage to stage and also out of the bottom stage. At the end of this period, which expires when the low level switch (LS) is actuated, some of the resin is left in the conical section of the column and the pipe interconnecting the column and the vessel. STEP 4: The cone flush period ensures that all the resin left in the cone of the column and the pipe is transferred to the transfer vessel before forward flow commences. STEP 5: The loaded resin in the transfer vessel, which has been isolated from the column, can either be hydraulically transferred to the top of the elution column or eluted in the vessel before being transferred to the top of the loading column. The major advantages associated with the NIMCIX concept are: (i) Simple method of operation (ii) Contactor can readily be scaled up to large diameters. (iii) Because the resin does not pass through pumps or airlifts, and valves cannot be closed on resin beads at any time, the resin losses are exceptionally low. (iv) Operating costs are low. (v) Relatively few valves in the system. (vi) Stable operation is achieved over a wide range of feed rates and concentrations.

The development of the relatively deeper fields discovered during 1937 helped build the 1938 production to 18,456,760 bbl., an increase of 6,295,910 bbl., or 51.6 per cent over 1937, and the largest production for south Arkansas since 1930. Schuler and Rodessa accounted for the increased production as well as for over half of the wells drilled in the state. There were 243 holes drilled during 1938, of which 200 were completed as oil or gas wells. Of the 29 wildcat wells completed, 25 were dry, 3 found oil in the Smack-over limestone, while 1 made a small oil well in the Nacatoch sand. This was less than half the number of wildcats drilled the previous year, but nearly twice as many field wells were drilled. The old depth record of 7973 ft. was exceeded twice during the year, with the present record of 8332 feet. Trend of Prospecting The porous "Reynolds" oolite of the Smackover limestone1 has been the object of most of the wildcat prospecting during the past two years. Seismograph work, which brought 22 crews into this area during 1938, was largely pointed toward a study of the structure of this limestone formation. Thirteen dry wildcats have been drilled to this formation and five pools have been opened in it since it was first found to be productive at Snow Hill in the spring of 1936. With the failure of "updip" prospects to produce, activity moved southward and basinward. Success in five instances in Columbia and south Union Counties has spurred activity in this area. Much of the acreage is under lease and half a dozen deep limestone tests are assured for the current year. Fig. 1 shows the location of the principal oil fields in south Arkansas, as well as one or two minor producing areas. The fields are numbered in the order of their discovery. Illinois produced 146,788,000 bbl. of oil in 1940, or nearly 11.0 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked fourth among the oil-producing states. Its production was only slightly less than that of Oklahoma, which produced 11.5 per cent of the national total. Illinois' production in 1940 represents an increase of 55 per cent over the previous year, when it amounted to 94,912,000 barrels. The development of the Devonian limestone in the Salem and Centralia fields is largely responsible for the increase in production during 1940 Production from the Devonian limestone in these two fields was estimated to be 36,698,000 bbl., or 25 per cent of the state's total production (Table I). The increase in production during June, when the state's daily average production attained a peak of 518,200 bbl. for the week ending June 29, was due to the Devonian production at Centralia (Fig. I). The initial production of the best Devonian wells in the Centralia field was as high as 12,000 bbl. in 24 hr. Daily average production in IIIinois for 1940 was 400,000 bbl. of oil, but actually daily production fluctuated widely during the year. At the beginning of 1940 daily production was approximately 330,000 bbl. During the first hali of the year it in-creased irregularly to the peak in June mentioned above and as the prolific Devonian producing areas were drilled up, the state's daily production declined rapidly during July and continued to decline, although more slowly, until the end of the year, when the daily production was approximately 325,000 bbl. The daily average production per well in the new fields at the end of the year was approximately 40 bbl. (Fig. I). Oil from the Devonian was also produced in the Bartelso field, Clinton County, the Sandoval field, Marion County, and the Irvington field, Washington County, bringing the estimated total production from the Devonian limestone to about 26 per cent of the state's total production, The remainder was obtained largely from the Mississippian system. About 2 per cent of the total was from Pennsylvanian and Ordovician strata. The decline in the Devonian limestone production has been so rapid that the 1941 output from this system will probably be only a small fraction of that of 1940 unless large new reserves are discovered. The "Trenton" (Ordovician) limestone has been tested in two wells in the Centralia field and both were small oil producers at a depth of about 4000 it. The "Trenton" also was found productive in the Salem field at a depth of 4500 ft. (Table 5). The initial production of the discovery well, which was completed shortly after the end of the year, was 130 bbl. on pump. Other wells drilled early in 1941 had initial productions averaging 172 barrels. The outlook for 1941 is for a continuation of drilling activity in Illinois, but at a declining rate (Fig. I, upper curve). The most active area at the end of 1940 was in the deep basin area in Wabash, Edwards, White, and Hamilton Counties.

Development and production activity in Oklahoma during the year 1940 was of routine nature. Production, according to the Corporation Commission's figures, averaged 409,100 bbl. daily as compared with 421,000 bbl. for the year 1939. Discoveries were of minor importance except for the Cumberland pool in Marshall and Bryan Counties, in the southern part of the state. Maintenance of a relatively stable producing rate is attributable to the drilling of new wells and the recompletion of many old wells in the previously established producing areas. During the year 1785 new wells were drilled, a decline of approximately 10 per cent as compared with the previous year. Of the wells drilled, 962 were oil wells with a combined initial production of 241,000 bbl. daily, 172 were gas wells having aggregate capacities of 1205 million cu. ft., and 651 were dry holes. Wildcat activity increased 20 per cent over 1939 and 227 such wells were completed during the year; that isl 43 oil wells, 16 gas wells, and 168 dry holes. In addition to the new work completed, 603 wells were recorded as having been drilled deeper or plugged back to test new horizons; included were 334 producing wells with total initial production of 65,000 bbl. daily, 37 gas wells with initial aggregating 305 million cu. ft., and 232 abandonments. Footage drilled amounted to 4,730,000 ft., an average of 2650 ft. per well as com-pared with an average depth of 2600 ft. recorded the previous year. The principal new pools discovered as a result of the exploratory drilling were Cumberland; East Cromwell, in Okfuskee County, and Prague, in Lincoln County. At the end of the year Cumberland had 13 completed wells, which averaged 700 bbl. initial through tubing from the Simpson Bromide formation (Ordovician) at 4750 ft. East Cromwell had 10 wells with average initial of 435 bbl. in the Cromwell sand (Pennsylvanian) at 3460 ft. Prague had II wells with an initial average of 220 bbl. from the Senora sand (Pennsylvanian) at 3260 ft. There were notable extensions to the Dill pool, Okfuskee County, and to the Hewitt pool, Carter County. At the end of the year, 19 producing wells had been drilled in the former, with initials averaging 1000 bbl., and 63 wells averaging 150 bbl. daily in the latter. There were no notable changes in the policy of State conservation authorities with respect to proration. The Bureau of Mines recommendations for the year averaged 413,000 bbl. daily; the State author-ities fixed allowables at an average of 406,000 bbl. daily, while, as noted above, production averaged 409,100 barrels. The most important development in the older areas occurred in the following pools: Billings.—Seven oil wells with an average initial production of 2500 bbl. and two dry holes were completed during the year. Production from the Simpson horizon averaged 6025 bbl. daily as compared with 5950 the previous year. Production from this field has been almost steady since reaching its peak early in 1937. Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines. For the past 3 years, the authors have been conducting research sponsored by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to improve the process of excavation by drilling and blasting. The approach followed has been experimental where the development of stress waves and fractures initiated at the bore hole have been investigated in order to obtain a complete understanding of the dynamic fracture process. The second step in the approach has been to introduce modifications in the drill and blast procedure which will permit closer control of the fracture process. The laboratory investigations involve high speed photography where the dynamic fracture process is recorded with a Cranz-Schardin 1, 2 multiple-spark camera. The camera is equipped with 16 spark gaps which are pulsed at 25 K volts to produce an intense but very short (0.5 sec) flash of light. The camera is capable of recording 16 photographs of a dynamic event at framing rates which can be varied from 30,000 to 1,500,000 frames per second. The exposure time is sufficiently short to stop motion associated with detonating explosive charges and to make visible the details of the fracture process at a bore hose. The bore hole in a massive intact rock formation is modelled with a two dimensional plate containing a circular hole to represent the bore hole. The model material employed is a transparent polyester known commercially as Homalite 100.* This polymeric material is extremely brittle as evidenced by its extremely low fracture toughness of [ ]. The fracture toughness is a measure of the ability of a material to resist the propagation of flaws or small cracks. In comparison, Schmidt3 has recently measured the fracture toughness of Salem limestone and determined [ ]. Thus, the Homalite 100 should closely model the brittle nature of rock where fractures occur at small flaws and propagate without any apparent plastic deformation. Homalite 100 is also birefringent, which indicates that it becomes optically anisotropic when subjected to either static or dynamic loads. Circularly polarized light is transmitted through the loaded Homalite 100 model in a polariscope4 and the birefringence produces an optical interference pattern which is called a fringe pattern. For dynamic photoelasticity, the multiple-spark camera is equipped with polaroid filters to produce the circularly polarized light required to generate the photoelastic fringe patterns. An example of a singlespark frame showing a fringe pattern from a typical experiment is presented in [Fig. 1]. The photograph was taken 0.000072 sec (72 sec) after the detonation of the explosive charge. The circular fringes are due to the outgoing dilatational or P type stress wave and travel with a velocity of 85,000 in. per sec (2260 m/sec) in the Homalite 100. The P wave is followed by a second lower velocity stress wave known as the shear or S type wave which propagates at a velocity of 49,000 in. per sec (1245 m/sec). In the local neighborhood of the bore hole, several radial cracks are visible. These cracks propagate at essentially a constant velocity of 15,000 in. per sec (380 m/sec) prior to arrest. The fringes about the crack tips and in the local region of the bore hole are primarily due to the residual gases contained in the bore hole after the explosive charge was detonated. Sixteen frames similar to this one are recorded during the experiment to give full field visualization of the dynamic event at 16 discrete times over its duration. The fringe order number N is related to the difference in the principal stresses of and 02 according to a stress optic law4: [ ] where f0 = material fringe value, and h = model thickness. The wholefield dynamic-fringe patterns provide a basis for simultaneously observing the interaction between propagating cracks and the stresses which drive these cracks. Fracture Control Experiments Improvements in the efficiency of the drill and blast procedures must involve close control of the fracture process following the detonation of an explosive charge in a bore hole. By control it is implied that the number of cracks initiated and the location of each crack on the wall of the bore hole can be specified. Control also, involves orienting each crack and maintaining the crack path and velocity until the specified crack length is achieved. If the entire fracture process can be controlled, then rounds can be designed to optimize volume removed. fragment size and minimize costs. One area of blasting where fracture control is vitally important is in underground excavation where the strength and stability of the rock walls must be maintained and smoothness and precision of the walls must be achieved. The smooth blasting method is one of the most commonly employed procedures for achieving some degree of fracture control. In smooth blasting, the central region of material is first removed, and then the final row of closely spaced undercharged or cushioned holes are fired to remove the final volume and produce a smooth wall. In some instances, unloaded or dummy holes between the loaded holes are recommended to guide the fracture plane. This investigation pertained to an evaluation of 3 features of the smooth blasting process. These included (a) the effect of stress reinforcement on fracture by simultaneously firing 2 charges; (b) the influence of a dummy hole on control of the fracture planes between 2 simultaneously fired charge holes; and (c) the influence of dummy hole spacing on fracture plane control.

The increase was accounted for in the Monroe field, while all other fields showed only minor variations from the production of the previous year. No new fields were discovered, the only wildcat well reported as a producer being a very small oil well in northwestern De Soto Parish, which is of no apparent commercial importance. The oil industry in Kentucky during the year 1937 shows some improvement over that of 1936, although not to as marked a degree as 1936 over 1935. Oil in Eastern Kentucky In eastern Kentucky more than 150 new inside wells were completed in the pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties. Also, a number of wells were completed to be used as intake wells in repressuring operations. Repressuring is proving more successful in this area than was expected, as the producing formation was the Corniferous limestone. However, when the repressuring work was started, cores taken of this formation showed that the oil in the second and third pays was from a true sand, only the first pay in the top being a sandy lime formation. In the Weir sand fields of Magoffin, Johnson and Lawrence Counties, continued repressuring operations caused an increase in the quantity of oil. These operations and the completion of 20 new wells in the Maxon sand and the Big lime (Mississippian) in Martin and Floyd Counties produced an increase in the oil production from eastern Kentucky of 100,000 bbl. over that of 1936. As an illustration of what may yet be done in the fields of eastern Kentucky, one repressuring operation involving four oil wells and one pressure well produced an increase in production, or an additional recovery of 7200 bbl. of oil during the year. This amounts to a recovery of 2000 per acre for the 3.6 acres involved. In other fields of eastern Kentucky, as in the Corniferous pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties, increases in the runs are noted as follows: In the area of the Estill County pool from which the oil passes through the Revena pumping station, the production in 1935 was 88,175 bbl.; in 1936, was 102,849 bbl.; and in 1937 was 107,704 bbl. OF late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloys1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys 10-11. That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut für Eisenforschung13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At subcritical temperatures above Ar" where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. A marked decrease in drilling during 1937 in Indiana seemed to have no undesirable effect upon the oil and gas industry. Instead, production figures for oil showed a small increase over those for the preceding year, although not so much gas was marketed as in 1936. Drilling activity was centered in proven areas, and the proportion of dry holes to the number of wells drilled decreased somewhat. During 1937, including old wells drilled to deeper horizons, 134 wells were completed in Indiana, of which 39 were oil wells, 39 gas wells, and 56 dry holes. Nearly 75 per cent of the holes were drilled in proven areas. Of the 36 wells drilled in wildcat areas, only four found commercial production. Wildcat wells were especially numerous in Vigo, Pike, Perry and Spencer Counties. Exploratory drilling activity in Vigo County resulted in part from the drilling of the discovery well in the new Prairie Creek field. In Pike County, wildcat wells were drilled in the search for new supplies of gas to meet the demand in the southwestern portion of Indiana. Drilling in both proven and wildcat areas in Perry and Spencer Counties continued to be heavy, because of the presence of shallow Missis-sippian sands and the resulting low cost of drilling and equipping. At the end of the year, 42 of the wells started in 1937 were not completed. Only a few locations were drilled in the old Trenton field, but the wells, many of them 40 years old, continued to furnish a small supply of gas for domestic consumption. Oil production in the Jay County portion of the Trenton area was nearly twice that of 1936, owing in part to a vacuum system installed on several leases. The Harrison County (Laconia) gas field is being developed northward to offset water encroaching from the south. This water in the black shale threatens to put an end to the steady production that this field has furnished for many years. During 1937, the Oaktown gas field again furnished more gas than any other field, but production in that area showed a marked decrease over the marketed gas for 1936. A survey of the world's sources and markets for natural graphite and some predictions of future trends are presented here. The authors feel that there is no indication of major changes in sources of graphite over the next few years, but it is possible that the importance of domestic graphites as opposed to foreign carbons may increase in the more distant future. U.S. consumption of natural graphite, which has been in general decline for the past six years, and will probably continue downhill with the virtual disappearance of some markets. However, other markets such as bearings, brake linings and crucibles will probably grow. Natural graphite is the name given to all the naturally occurring mineral forms of carbon that crystallize in the hexagonal system. Natural graphite~ are generally divided into three broad classifications that are based on physical rather than chemical differences — crystalline flake, Ceylon amorphous and other amorphous. Crystalline flake graphites occur as thousands of small individual flakes disseminated throughout the ore and closely resemble shiny black fish scales. Ceylon amorphous graphite is mined from narrow veins of almost pure mineral. It is produced in lump form and often has a coarse platy or needlelike structure. Other amorphous graphites include all those that are extremely fine-grained and have a crystalline structure that is not visible under normal circumstances. In the primary raw material markets, the graphite's country of origin is also important. Crystalline flake graphites may, for example, be of the Alabaman, Bavarian or Madagascan types; Ceylon amorphous graphite may have originated in Montana or Ceylon; and other amorphous graphites may come from Mexico, Hong Kong or Korea. The distinctions between the graphites from each particular locality are small yet important, for the country of origin will signify certain inherent physical characteristics and will often give an idea of the amount of graphitic carbon contained in the shipment in question. .In certain instances, however, even this is not enough, since the actual mine at which the graphite is produced may have to be known before its true commercial value can be ascertained. Thus, the Madagascar flake graphite shipped from the Sahalambo mines of the Societe des Graphites de la Sahanavo is a thick flake which is known to be especially suited for use in crucibles, while the dull black earthy amorphous material formerly mined at Cranston, R.I., was ideal for stove polish. Synthetic, artificial, electric furnace and manufactured are terms used to describe graphites made from coke. These graphites will be considered in this paper only to the extent that they enter competition with natural graphite. DOMESTIC SOURCES OF NATURAL GRAPHITES Natural graphites have been produced from mines in Alabama, Alaska, California, Georgia, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and other states. The exception is the crystalline minerals resembling Ceylon graphite that have come from Montana and the amorphous meta-anthracites from Rhode Island. All the products mined have been flake graphite. In 1960, production was reported only in Texas and Pennsylvania. The Alabama graphite deposits of flake in quartz-mica schists are found southeast of Birmingham in a narrow belt that extends for about 60 miles southwest from Delta in Randolph County to Verbena in Chilton County. Since the long-run prospects for Alabama graphites appear to be fairly bright, especially if regular production of high quality output becomes possible, regional ore reserves of all kinds, including indicated and inferred, are estimated to be of the order of 25 million tons. Of this amount, 14 million tons are of the weathered variety. Alabama graphites are favored by their relative ease of mining, and by the fact that special methods of milling have been developed at the larger properties. In addition, the steady rise in ocean freight rates for Madagascar graphites, the tendency among crucible manufacturers to use flakes of a smaller size, and the possibility of producing other salable byproducts in addition to the graphite are favorable to Alabama producers. An attached growth aerobic biological treatment process has been developed at Homestake Mining Co.'s Lead operation which not only oxidizes free and complexed cyanides, including the stable iron complexed cyanides, but also thiocyanate, and the oxidation byproduct ammonia. Through the employment of a mutant strain of bacteria which has been gradually and specifically acclimated to the waste, these potential pollutants are mineralized to relatively harmless sulfates, carbonates, and nitrates. The resultant effluent, through toxicological testing, has been shown compatible with the receiving stream, which serves as a cold water marginal trout fishery.
