FOR many years the treatment of mine timbers with preservatives was confined to a few pioneer plants in the United States, and it is only in the past few years that the practice has grown appreciably. In a field study of the mine timber situation in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and further study of the situation in the country as a whole, I found that most mine operators did not keep records on mine timber that would afford the necessary data for determining the possible savings from preservative treatment. Some primary questions the mining engineer should be able to answer before making his decision on preservative treatment. for a particular mine are: (1) Quantity and cost of timber going into permanent workings annually; (2) quantity and cost of annual replacements due to decay; (3) life of untreated timber in different places; (4) desired life of timber. With the necessary facts in hand, he can then con-fidently select a method of treatment and preservative that is best suited to his needs. In former years when timber was cheap and an abundant supply could be had close at hand, as was the case in the majority of mining regions, the mine op-erator did not concern himself much except to see that enough was supplied to keep the workings safe. The cost figure for timber and labor, distributed to cost per ton of ore, was all the bookkeeping necessary. With present costs of timber, labor, and increasing length of haul to the mine, many operators are paying closer attention to timbering costs and studying them in. more detail. Some of the larger and more progressive opera-tions now keep detailed' figures that give information on all phases of their timber problems. The habit planes for hydride precipitation in large grains of alpha zirconium and Zircaloy-4 were determined in specimens containing 161 and 136 ppm hydrogen, respectively. In zirconium, the hydride platelets precipitated on various pyramidal planes inclined to the basal plane at angles ranging from 10 to 50 deg and 75 to 90 deg. Hydrides were most frequent at inclinations of about 20 deg and 90 deg. In Zircaloy-4, hydride plates were inclined to the basal plane at angles vanging from 5 to 25 deg with the predominant inclinatioiz equal to 12 deg; no platelets were found near the prism plane position. In both zircoinium and Zir-caloy-4, hydrides were principally, but not exclusively, parallel to (1011) type planes. When the Zircaloy-4 gmins were subjected to tension stresses of 12,100 psi and 19,400 psi during hydride precipitation, the hydride habit was unchanged except that precipitation favored those habit planes which were inore nearly perpendicular to the stress direction. The stress-orientatioiz effect increased with the magnitude of the stress. THE hydride habit plane in a zirconium has been determined by several investigators. Langeron and Lehr1 in 1956 found platelets parallel to (1010) slip planes. In 1962, Westlake and Fisher2 confirmed these findings and showed that hydride precipitation on twin planes, as reported by Kunz and Bibb,3 was probably due to incomplete removal of worked metal from specimen surfaces. Secondary habit planes, ( 1011) and (1015), were also found by Westlake and Fisher under particular charging conditions where a hydride layer may have existed at the hydrogenation temperature. Most recently, walters4 and westlake5 again observed the (1010) habit exclusively in zirconium. Louthan and hgermans have reported that hydrides precipitate on various ( 101l ) and (112l) planes positioned 31.5 to 90 deg to the basal plane in Zircaloy-2. The present investigation was concerned with the hydride habit in Zircaloy-4 in relation to that in zirconium and the possible change in habit when precipitation occurs under stress. The latter consideration was prompted by the stress-orientation phenomenon originally reported by Marshall and Louthan.7, 8 I) EXPERIMENTAL Materials and Specimens. Chemical analyses of all materials are given in Table I. The zirconium specimen was a 1 by 4 in. section cut from wrought crystal bar that was hot-rolled at 790°C to 0.300 in. and cold-rolled to a final thickness of 0.095 in. All surfaces were mechanically polished and then chemically polished with a solution of H2O, HNO3, and HF (10:10:l by volume) prior to annealing. Grains as long as 0.25 in. were grown by thermally cycling the specimen three times (in 10-5 mm Hg vacuum) between 825" and 1000°C at approximately 125°C per hr. It is a striking fact in the domestic oil statistics of 1926 that with an increase in production of 13,000,000 bbl., there was nevertheless a lowering of both crude and gasoline stocks. It was the first reduction in the last eight years. In 1918, the last year of the war, stocks of crude and refined products were lowered 16,000,000 bbl., but in the following seven years stocks were increased 350,000,000 bbl., due largely to the phenomenal crop of major pools discovered in 1923. The big pools of that year coming as they did through some curious coincidence unprecedented in the oil industry, not only piled up a sudden increase of stocks at a time of large imports but they continued to add their quota to an increase of storage until 1926. With an increase in crude production, according to the Oil and Gas Journal, from 760,000,000 bbl. in 1925 to 773,000,000 bbl. in 1926, and an increase in cracking facilities of about 30 per cent., there was a draft on storage of 22,300,000 bbl. of crude and 1,000,000 bbl. of refined. Crude and refined changed from a stock surplus of 29,130,000 bbl. in 1925, to a deficit of 23,300,000 bbl. in 1926, or a differential total of 52,430,000 bbl. With a stock reserve of 541,700,000 bbl. of crude and refined oil in 1925, the amount drawn from storage was not large in percentage but it marked an important contrast with previous years. It meant a year of stability in prices and a sound condition in the industry. The indicated domestic demand increased from 695,120,000 in 1925 to 743,360,000 in 1926, (7 per cent.), 1 per cent. of which was due to California fires. Most of the gain in consumption was due to the increased demand for gasoline. There was little comparative change in the combined imports of crude and refined oil. There was an increase in exports of 17,200,000 bbl. (1.5 per cent). A petroleum balance sheet for 1926 and a comparativl sheet for the last two years, production in the United States by major districts and pools, and a list of imports are given in Tables 1 to 5, inclusive.

The explosive welding of metals is dependent upon the production of a jetting action caused by the collapsing of one metal plate against another. Successful welds are generally accomplished if the yield strength of the metals is in the range of 10,000 to 90,000 psi and the sonic velocity of the metal is greater than the detonation velocity of the explosive if direct contact explosive is being used.' Should the detonation velocity exceed the velocity of sound in the metal it may still be possible to obtain the jetting action and a good weld. However, in most cases where a high detonation velocity is used complications arise because of reflected shock waves which tear the bond apart as fast as it is put together.' Explosive welding of lead presents several problems since its yield strength and sound velocity are very low. Various values have been published3-5 for the velocity of sound in lead ranging from 2000~ to 23004 m per sec. Most of the high-order explosives have detonation velocities on the order of 6000 to 8000 m per sec, which precludes their use. The dynamites have a lower detonation velocity of around 2800 m per sec which is still somewhat too high. Lower-order explosives such as ammonium nitrate (1070 m per sec) must be used to weld lead in the as-received condition if the explosives are used in direct contact. Rather than use low-order explo'sives it was decided to alter the sonic velocity of the lead. The sonic velocity is directly related to the modulus of the material according to the following expression: Fig 1—Interface of explosive weld of lead to steel. Bolling et al. 6 show that the shear modulus of lead single crystals increases from about 0.72 X1011 dynes per sq cm at 300°K to about 0.98 X1011 dynes per sq cm at 0°K, an increase of approximately 3 5 pct. This gives an increase in the sonic velocity of around 700 m per sec. Hence, the sonic velocity of lead at cryogenic temperatures is approximately equivalent to the detonation velocity of the low-order dynamites. We have obtained high-quality lead to steel explosive welds using a 40 pct dynamite in direct contact with the lead. Prior to detonation the lead was chilled with liquid nitrogen (78°K) to increase the strength and sonic velocity. Welds were made while the lead was cold. Specimen sizes were 3 by 6 in. A preset angle of 5 deg with a 0.10-in. standoff at the base was the geometrical setup used. The amount of explosive used for optimum welding of an 1/8 -in. -thick lead sheet to a steel plate was found to be 7 g per sq in. A PETN sheet explosive line wave generator was used to insure a linear detonation front through the dynamite. A photomicrograph of a lead-steel weld is shown in Fig. 1. The typical wave effect that constitutes a good explosive weld is present. When tested in shear, the weld failed in the lead, indicating that the bond is stronger than the lead base metal. Higher-order explosives were also tried without success. We believe this indicates the importance of matching the detonation velocity and the sonic velocity for successful explosive welding. Note Added in Proof. High quality explosive welds of lead to steel have recently been obtained at ambient temperature using a low velocity (1000 M per sec) free running dynamite. During the past twenty years, and especially in the last decade, hydraulic cyclones have found increasing application in metallurgical processing as classifiers and, under special circumstances, as thickeners. To a more limited extent cyclones have been used to extend heavy, or dense, medium separation into the finer size ranges, and several attempts have been made to separate dispersions of immiscible liquids with a view to use in the field of liquid- liquid extraction. Before considering several aspects of conventional application, less conventional applications and some potential uses of modified cyclones, the mechanism of separation within a cyclone and the effect of the, major variables will he summarized.

Mining operations have been carried out in British Columbia since the time of the first settlers in the area. The early developments were mainly small volume, high-grade operations, producing small quantities of tailings wastes. In these early days the nearest stream was a logical first choice for tailings disposal. Where streams suitable for accepting the tailings were not available or where streams crossing the International Border could not be used for this purpose, the nearest convenient land site was selected for storing the tailings. Old tailings waste piles exist at many locations in the Province and are readily evident, for example, in the Princeton and Hedley areas. Figs. 1 and 2 are photographs showing the present condition of two of these old tailings dams. [ ]

In this paper the imminent relationship between rock burst and its phenomenon with normal rock pressure and its appearance, as well as the factors of one changing into another have been analyzed. Based on this, the necessary and sufficient appearing factors of rock bursts have been put forward, and the term ''burst pressure" has been defined. According to the statistics data of tremendous rock bursts which appear in collieries in Hunan Province, the features of high frequency, great strength and shallow depth of the beginning burst have been found. There are some special structures in the coal seams, which are closely related with the burst phenomenon. A hypothesis of "star structure" has been suggested for the appearing mechanism of bursts. Inside and around this star structure the distribution rule of burst pressure and rock strength has been researched depending upon the theory of the limited stress field. A new description of the appearing causes of bursts has been raised.

This paper analyzes the effect of limited entry to flow at the wellbore on the steady-state productivity of a well. Wells that have been opened to flow along a fraction of their productive interval are termed wells with limited entry. Previous work treated the cases of a partially penetrating well, a well producing from the central portion of the productive interval and a well in which several intervals equally spaced were open to flow. In this paper the open interval can be located anywhere within the productive interval. Thus, in a sense, it generalizes previous work. The finite cosine transform was used to arrive at a solution for steady-state flow of a slightly compressible fluid. The solution was programmed for a CDC 1604 computer. Numerical vaIues for rd = 660 ft, r, = 1/4 ft, and range of sand thickness of 20 to 200 ft are presented in graphical form. The effect of rd and r, values on the result is shown in a table. The correct calculation of skin and damage ratio in the presence of limited entry to flow is explained and illustrated by examples. Moreover, the paper shows how to calculate the net decrease in productivity due to the combined effect of limited entry and perforations. INTRODUCTION In some wells only a fraction of the productive interval is open to flow. Location of this fraction is usually dictated by formation characteristics and reservoir behavior. For instance, if a gas cap exists, the open interval is located away from the gas-oil contact to prevent any possible gas coning. Wells that intentionally have been opened to flow along a fraction of their productive formation are tened wells with limited entry. Obviously, unintentional completions of this type also exist. Limited entry to flow decreases well productivity. Magnitude of the loss depends on the fraction of the formation open to flow, on the thickness of the sand, on the location of the open interval and on the ratio of rd /r, where r , is well radius and rd is the drainage radius of the well. The use of pressure buildup data on producing wells to calculate the condition of the formation around the wellbore is an accepted practice. van Everdingenl and Hurst2 introduced the concept of she skin factor s considered to be due to a thin layer of different permeability immediately around the wellbore. These authors dealt with the case of a well of complete radial geometry, i.e., a well with open-hole completion that completely penetrates the formation. The presence of a low-permeability skin results in a loss of productivity, as does limited entry. Therefore, if pressure buildup data obtained on a well with limited entry are used to establish the presence or absence of skin (i.e., formation damage), and a correction is not made for this loss of productivity, the calculations would result in an erroneous skin value. They might indicate the presence of formation damage when in reality there is none, or they might indicate a value larger than the true value. This could lead to an incorrect basis for planning remedial measures. Muskat3 studied the problem of partially penetrating wells for the case of incompressible flow. He presented equations and figures which allow estimation of loss in productivity. Brons and Marting,4 using equations based on Nisle's work,5 studied the loss of productivity for three cases. The first was for a partially penetrating well; the second was for a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval; and the third was for a well in which several intervals equally spaced were open to flow. Their work was for steady-state depletion-type reservoirs wherein the well radius of drainage is established and the fluid is considered to be slightly compressible. Geotechnical site investigation for new mine shafts can reduce the level of design uncertainty for shaft linings. The parameters which determine the lining strength required include rock strength and hydrologic properties, the in situ stress conditions, and the concrete strength. These parameters are applied to analytical methods of shaft lining design using the plastic and clastic assumptions of rock response to determine the required lining thickness to maintain the stability of the shaft excavation.

SINCE early in 1916, when it became apparent that the steel industry of the United States could not depend, for the duration of the war, on several important foreign sources of manganese and might have to depend entirely on domestic ores, the U. S. Geological Survey, with the assistance f several cooperating organizations, has made a comprehensive investigation of domestic manganese resources. The work has included field studies in a number of states as well as annual, quarterly, and monthly canvasses among operators concerning current and future production. In order that the interested public might have access to the important results of the studies, preliminary reports concerning the field work as well as periodic summaries of production were issued as promptly as possible. Although large deposits of rich manganese oxides appear to be lacking in the United States, small deposits of high-grade material are numerous and widely distributed and large low-grade deposits are found in several places. The principal districts in which high-grade manganese ore is mined, in the order of their importance as recent sources of production, are: Philipsburg district, Mont.; Butte district, Mont.; Southern Nevada region; Central California region; Bisbee district, Ariz.; Appalachian region of Virginia; Batesville district, Ark.; Tintic district, Utah; and Cartersville district, Ga. Scattered deposits of some importance are found in western Arizona, southern California, eastern Tennessee, southern Oregon, and central Utah. The formation of many manganese oxide deposits appears to be related to the physiographic histories of the regions in which they occur.

For more than 100 years, the Republic of Chile has been one of the leading copper-producing countries of the world. Between 1877 and 1880 Chile accounted for over 50 pet of total world copper production. Today it has the world's largest known reserves of copper ore and a capability of producing over 600,000 tons per year. This capacity can and will be increased as the world demand for copper grows steadily during the remaining years of this century. The Potrerillos mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., a subsidiary of The Anaconda Co., was developed in the rugged, high Cordilleras in the early 1920's, and the townsite, concentrator, leaching plants, smelter, railroad, power and port facilities were completed so that it came into full production in 1927. Since then and until the closing o f the mine in June of last year, 1,762,192 tons o f copper were produced.
