TEST gravity surveys were made in the Washington County barite district of Missouri on property owned by the Baroid Sales Division of the National Lead Co. This property is located just northeast of Richwoods in the northeastern corner of Washington County, Fig. 1. The area to which the surveys were confined comprised approximately 5000 acres, of which some 525 acres were surveyed gravitationally. Gravity observations were made at 2600 points within the area, observations being confined to relatively clear and gently sloping ground. Part of the area was heavily wooded, and the terrain too rugged for either the occurrence of a commercial barite deposit or a feasible gravity survey. The relief along the central drainage, Ditch Creek, was about 140 ft, the maxi- mum difference in elevation being 400 ft in a distance of 3 ½ miles.

LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Chrome, N. J.-I read this paper for the first time this afternoon, and it is really worthy of a much more careful reply than I can make with such a short time to consider it, but I just want to say that I differ with Dr. Lyon in his premises and conception of what happens in a refining furnace. He cites steel as an instance where the production of special grades justifies the high cost of power in an electric furnace, and goes on to say the same will be true in the case of copper, for the reason that you will get a better quality of product. I don't think you will get a higher grade of copper,. or a better conductivity, as I will explain in a moment. The cost of fuel in the Eastern plants is somewhere between 30c. and 40c. per ton of copper refined, and, if my memory serves me correctly, in an open-hearth steel furnace it is something like $1.25, so it is evident that steel could be handled to better advantage than copper on the basis of fuel. Now, taking the Great Falls plant to compare with is not quite fair, because that plant operates under peculiar conditions. The furnaces are relatively small; the coal is very bad and is very high in sulphur. No one would think of using a coal with 3.6 per cent. sulphur were anything better available. Due to these conditions, the amount of slag is inordinate, it being quoted as 3.5 per cent., and it is necessary to use lime, as there is a tendency to have troubles from arsenic owing to the very high current density used. I think he has taken about as hard a case as he could pick out. Now as to the conductivity of copper, my own idea about the reason that melted copper does not give as high a conductivity as pieces drawn directly from a cathode, or native copper, is that in the latter case the impurities are present as a mechanical mixture, while after melting they are chemically combined with the copper, which is a very different condition. Further, it is necessary to take the sample from a relatively smooth and consequently pure part of the cathode, as otherwise it would not draw. The same with the mass of copper; you pick out a good solid part of the copper, which is not representative. In fact, the refiners have all found they could not take fair samples of cathodes for a chemical analysis. It is always customary to use wire-bar copper -for the purpose of sampling, and the impurities are several times as great as shown by samples taken from .the cathodes. I think if we examine all of the examples he has given of cases where copper is higher in conductivity, it will fit with that explanation. L. C. UREn,* BerkelEy, Cal. (written discussion).—I heartily concur with Rlr. .Fobs concerning the need for advanced courses on various phases of Petroleum Engineering. I think that his criticism is probably true of most of the engineering schools that are specializing at all in Petroleum Engineering, that is, that most of their so-called graduate courses are not of graduate caliber but are merely more specialized aspects of undergraduate subjects. It would undoubtedly be to the advantage of the petroleum profession if more advanced work could be offered in a few of the leading engineering institutions so that there would be something substantial to offer graduate students wishing to return after a period of undergraduate work, for additional training. There is no doubt but that a better trained engineer, more useful to the oil industry, could be secured from schools offering such advanced training. The problem of adpting our instruction to fit the needs of engineers trained along other lines who wish, after completion of their undergraduate work, to enter thc petroleum engineering field, is a more difficult one. It has been my experience that such men are usually sadly deficient along certain lines and that they are really not prepared for the more advanced work in Petroleum Production Engineering until they have gone back over the work which they have missed in their undergraduate training. I note that Mr. Fohs suggests that other eastern and western colleges not now stressing Petrolelim Engineering, should be encouraged to take up advanced work of this character. With this, however, I cannot agree unless the institutions arc also prepared to offer a full sequence of undergraduate work on which the more advanced courses may be superimposed. Whether or not there is a need for additional engi-ncering colleges entering the petroleum engineering field is an open qucstion. I believe that we arc turning out enough petroleum engineers at the present time and that none of the six institutions now specializing in this field arc overcrowded. Morc-ovcr, they are fairly well distributed over the country, though there may be room for an additional school in the field in the eastcrn section of the United States. F. W. Padgett, Norman, Okla. (written tliscussion).—Assuming that the stnclcnt has the proper fundamentals, that is, general science and a knowledge of the technology of the industry, then the problem is: What courses should be offered from the graduate standpoint? (a) Course Work.—His knowledge of the technology of the industry can be extended advantagcously by means of one and two-hour courses, which consist in a more detailed survey of the various branches of the industry. (b) Lilerdure.—This work may, or may not, be connected directly with his research problem. UNDERGRADUATES in mining engineering may be prepared for work by giving them sound instruction in the courses generally considered essential to the profession. The industry is not deeply concerned about the details of those courses. The average man in the coal industry does not wish to insist upon a rigid program. Therefore, he differs little from those in the teaching profession who evidently are not unanimous in their opinions, or all college catalogs would be alike. For the good of the profession, it is just as well that there should be differences in regard to details. It appears that students graduating in mining engineering from the accredited institutions receive similar instruction.

PROBABLY the earliest concentration of iron ore in this country was carried on in the northeastern magnetite areas. Magnetic concentration was relatively simple and gave a concentrate that, after agglomeration, and in spite of being high in phosphorus because of the dry concentrating methods then in use, was satisfactory blast-furnace feed. Production from the northeastern magnetite area languished after the discovery and development of the Lake Superior ores, where there was seemingly an unlimited tonnage of high-grade ore, first the Michigan ores, and subsequently the still larger deposits of Minnesota. For years only the higher grade, direct shipping ores of the Lake Superior district were mined. Those of Michigan, and of the Vermilion Range in Minnesota, were hard ores and came principally from underground mines. The softer ores of the Mesabi came partly from underground mines, but mostly from the enormous deposits that could be worked by open-pit methods. The costs of ore from these open-pit deposits, even with the high initial cost of stripping, were so low that the underground mines of the Mesabi could hardly compete. The so-called Old Range ores, of Michigan and of the Vermilion Range of Minnesota, were hard and lumpy, and opened up the burden in the blast furnace, therefore making possible harder driving with greater output. Also, some of these ores were of such grade and physical characteristics that they were suitable for charge ore in the open hearth. These ores, therefore, commanded a price premium, and could compete with the softer, finer, but cheaper, Mesabi ores. The big tonnage reserves, however, are on the Mesabi, and it is these big open-pit deposits that constitute our stock pile of iron ore, from which we are drawing so heavily during this war period. On the western end of the Mesabi the ore was found to be high in silica, and not suitable as furnace feed. As early as 1902, attempts were made to concentrate this so-called wash ore and by 1910 the first washing plant was put into operation. The process was very simple, consisting essentially of a sizing and washing operation, with scalping screens, logwashers, and tables, which later were replaced by classifiers. Ore particles finer than 100 mesh were deliberately wasted, because these fines were undesirable in the furnace. Fortunately, these tailings were impounded, and already are being reworked. Before long some of the low-grade ores began to require more elaborate treatment than the simple washing operation and, tables having been discarded because of their low capacity, in favor of classifiers, jigs were next introduced. These were able to discard coarser pieces of tailing than classifiers. Jigs are in active use today, various improvements having been made in their design and application. A century ago, Thomas Carlyle sketched the Emblem of the Wasting Candle in one of his papers. "Terar Dum Prosim" he wrote under the candle-" May I be wasted so that I be of use." The application of his reasoning is an excellent guide for a discussion of the scrap problems of today. The General Electric Co. has addressed itself to the need of proper and careful preparation of scrap metals for many years. A supervisor of salvage directs this work in each of the works. Generally he is an engineer and has had broad factory training. He gives general direction to the collection, preparation and disposition of scrap materials. He operates the extensive facilities which each works has provided for the centralization and control of scrap accumulations, and also initiates studies leading to the reduction of scrap accruing from machining and assembly operations. r We recognize that each industry, each factory, each locality faces a different set of conditions. Irrespective of size, in a plant employing 20 men or a large works with 15,00 employees-certain fundamental principles can be applied for organization and the collection of scrap. The manufacture of electrical apparatus is a highly complicated intricate business. In one area we make electronic tube and adjacent buildings house the manufacture of steam turbines. Both are instruments for power-different in size and in many cases serving different fields of application. Unlike the great industries that build automobiles, trucks, or engines where repetitive operations, once solved, set the stage, electrical manufacturers' plants are large jobbing shops. Therefore, we must carefully plan every step in handling the scrap that "in so wasting to produce the finished motor or locomotive-we can return this product to reprocessing and ultimate use." ESSENTIALS FOR SALVAGE EFFICIENCY The essential steps for an efficient salvage department are: I. Selection of Personnel.-An able foreman would be a man of broad experience and understanding-one who commands the respect of the entire foreman group as well as that of his own men. In the interest of clean scrap, it is necessary to acquaint the foremen in the separate manufacturing units with the need of careful segregation in the shop and the best methods of obtaining it. At least 40 per cent contact time should be devoted for this purpose. 2. The physical equipment of the salvage department should be devised and selected to handle complete, at one point, all scrap operations. INTRODUCTION By the end of 1979 pellet productive capacity from the processing of low grade iron ores in the Lake Superior-District will total 86 million tons per year. Of that tonnage, 72 million result from the processing of magnetic ores such as taconite, about 6 million tons from the flotation processing of relatively coarse grained specular hematite, and 8 million tons from the processing of fine grained non- magnetic ores at Tilden. The Tilden flowsheet represents a break- through in the processing of this type of crude ore and hence is unique in the Lake Superior District (1). Operations at Tilden started in late 1974 with Algoma Steel, J&L Steel Corp., The Cleve- land-Cliffs Iron Company, The Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., Wheeling- Pittsburgh Steel Corp., and Sharon Steel Corp. as participants. Cleveland-Cliffs operates and manages the operation. Other companies have conducted extensive pilot plant tests or are in commercial production in the processing of fine grained non-magnetic ore materials (2). Flowsheets and reagent schedules may be different for each particular application, but some of the problem areas in the processing of Tilden ores have also been experienced at operations such as the IOC Plant at Sept-Isles, at Lamco and at Bong in Liberia, and in pilot testing of Fabrica ores of Ferteco Mineracao in Brazil. With a grind of about 80-85% -500 mesh resulting in 50% of the particles in the concentrate being less than 15 microns, a discussion of the pro- cessing of Tilden type ores fits the topic of this workshop. There are very large tonnages of fine grained non-magnetic crude ores which exist throughout the Lake Superior District and other iron ore producing regions. URANIUM is commonly recovered by either column ion exchange (IX) or basket ion exchange (RIP) from solutions resulting from sulfuric acid leaching of uranium-bearing ores. In both operations a solid state ion exchanging resin is used, the major difference being that practically clear uranium pregnant solutions are required for passage through resin columns whereas in RIP, leach slurries from which only the sands have been removed are caused to flow through ion exchanging resins contained in baskets. The solvent extraction process as used for recovering uranium from acid leach solutions is also an ion exchanging process, but one in which the ion exchanging medium is a liquid rather than a solid state resin. For this reason, SX is often referred to as liquid ion exchange, although liquid- liquid extraction is probably more accurate. Uranium in its sulfuric acid leach solutions exists in an equilibrium that may be visualized as follows: [ ] Because of an equilibrium of this nature, uranium may be recovered on either cation exchanging or anion exchanging resins and then concentrated during the resin eluting operation. Similarly, solvent extraction processes may utilize either anion ex- changing or cation exchanging liquid organic phases, which capture the uranium and permit its subsequent concentration when the organic phase is stripped.

DIATOMS are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skeletons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of vary-ing thicknesses. DIATOMITES Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition.

Mount Isa Mines Limited (Isamine) has process control computers in the major surface plants -- lead smelter, copper smelter, lead/zinc concentrator, and copper concentrator. HP computers are used to implement the more complex stabilizing control loops and control schemes aimed at optimizing plant performance. The choice of control strategies is discussed with particular reference to long-term performance in metallurgical plants. These control schemes must be understood by the process metallurgists who are responsible for the performance and initial fault finding. Major emphasis has been placed on the ability of the control systems to handle most of the common plant upset conditions as well as providing improved performance under normal operating conditions. To illustrate the approaches adopted, the lead/zinc concentrator crushing system and the process bag- house control system for lead smelter off-gas handling are reviewed in detail. The improvements in both of these areas resulting from control systems implementation are discussed.

During 1938, the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Co. Ltd., subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. Ltd., was continued. The original basis of the search for oil and results to the end of 1937 have already been described.' During 1938 two further wells were drilled in the south, making a total of five wells completed in that part of England. Test wells were also commenced in the Midlands, East Yorkshire and Scotland, where one well, which proved natural gas, was completed during the year. Southern England.—The test well at Kingsclere, in Hampshire, which at the end of 1937 had reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias, entered the Trias at 5060 ft. and was abandoned in that formation at a depth of 5125 ft. A shallow test well was also drilled near Pevensey, in Sussex, to test the lower horizons of the Wealden series and the Purbeck and Portland beds. Traces of oil were encountered in the Wealden series but no production was obtained and the well was abandoned at a depth of 842 ft. in the Kimeridge clay, which underlies the Portland beds. A geological borehole was begun north of Lulworth in Dorset, where the outcropping Wealden series, Lower Cretaceous, is strongly impregnated with oil, to determine whether a more pronounced pre-Albian anticline underlies the very gentle arch of the unconformable Upper Cretaceous. Drilling is not yet completed. Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire ad Yorkshire.—Geophysical investigations were continued in the eastern part of England where the structural conditions of the Carboniferous rocks are concealed by an unconformable blanket of Permian and younger sediments. Seismic methods failed to confirm the structural picture obtained by the previous gravity traverses, but confirmation of a structure near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, which was suspected on evidence from colliery workings, was obtained. A location was made for a test well on this structure. Eskdale No. 1, begun on the Eskdale pericline near Whitby, in Yorkshire, to test the magnesian limestone of Permian age, was abandoned at a depth of 2486 ft. in the Trias after protracted fishing operations. THE use of oxygen as a bath reagent in hearth furnaces during the refining period is a familiar story. Investigations and tests in which oxygen was substituted for iron ore to reduce carbon date back 25 years and include the work of Bigge,1 Browne,2 and Chelius.3 During this past year the majority of the experimental work in the use of oxygen was carried on mainly in open-hearth shops, since it was felt that the greater field for application lay in this type of furnace. Much constructive work was done in evaluating the carbon-oxygen relationships, as reported by Slottman and Lounsberry4 and by Hughes.5 Steelmakers using the electric furnace have been actively engaged meanwhile in an experimental program of their own, with such success that the oxygen injection pipe has become a tool in the day to day production of low-carbon and stainless steels.

Owing to a moratorium in the drilling of crown-land leases in Trinidad during the year of 1931, only 40 wells were spudded in during the first eight months as compared with 110 during the same period in 1930. Nevertheless the production will show an increase of about 400,000 bbl. over that of 1930. An estimate is given in Table 1. Since the oil produced in 1930 was 9,418,907 bbl. and that in 1931 probably will be 9,853,976 bbl., the year 1931 probably will see an increase of about 4.6 per cent. The gross production of crude oil in the colony has increased steadily year by year, with the exception of 1919, when there was a slight decline. A tabulated statement was given last year.' The Petroleum Times of March 21, 1931 (p. 413) gives the total production of 1930 as 9,418,000 bbl. and the average monthly production as 784,833 bbl. The same two items for 1931 are estimated at 9,853,976 and 821,165 bbl., respectively.

The potential behavior of radionuclides released in an underground nuclear detonation to fracture copper ore for subsequent in-situ leaching and copper recovery was studied with regard to contamination of the copper product and hazards to operating personnel. The laboratory test results indicate that only small fractions of the radioactive fission products would be dissolved on leaching the ore. Tritium (as tritiated water) would be the dominant radionuclide in the circulating leach liquor, assuming use of a fusion explosive. The test results showed solvent extraction to have important advantages over cementation for recovering copper from the leach liquors. While the radioactivity of the copper metal product produced by either method should be extremely low, the solvent extraction process provides a more effective separation of copper from the radioactive contaminants and entails fewer radiation protection problems. For these reasons it is the preferred process.

INTRODUCTION Direct reduction of iron ores has unquestionably become established as an important step in the worldwide steelmaking industry. The history of this development has been long and fraught with difficulty. In 1800, Champlain suggested the direct reduction concept using carbon and a shallow hearth vessel. Roughly 100 years later, Jones attempted a commercial process using carbon and producer gas in a rotary kiln. During the early years of this century, numerous attempts were made to start commercial direct reduction plants using such processes as Hoganas, Wiberg, Krupp-Renn, and others. Most of these were short lived, being abandoned due to a variety of technical and economical factors. Today, however, a new generation of direct reduction processes has emerged. We enter 1977 with at least 40 commercial plants in operation using 15 processes in 14 countries. These plants have combined total annual capacity of roughly 10 million tonnes of direct reduced product. Many articles have been written, and projections made, concerning the future growth potential for direct reduction. As is al- ways the case with projections, the numbers vary, but the outlook does not. Anyone who participated in the years of effort that have gone into this field of endeavor should be excited and justly rewarded by noting the shape of the curve in Figure 1.

Oil activities and the petroleum industry in general have suffered severely in this country as a result of present war conditions. War has imposed a very heavy and unpleasant burden on the shoulders of those whose duty it is to keep .Argentina supplied with the necessary oil to meet industry's growing demands. Since 1940, imports of manufactured products from Europe and the United States have fallen to a minimum, making it necessary to manufacture as many of them as possible locally. SEVERAL constructive and fundamental studies have been made in the analysis of data obtained from experiments carried on with batch ball and rod mills. The operating characteristics of ball milling in small continuous circuits have also been appraised. It is from these analyses that some of the theories of comminution have been developed. Relatively few studies of continuous rod milling have added significantly to the fundamental concepts, because seldom have they yielded sufficiently consistent results. Perhaps they have been too limited in their scope. Careful control of the variables in batch grinding is simple compared with that encountered in a continuous operation. This factor alone has discouraged many investigators. Occasionally results of systematic changes made in industrial rod mill circuits have been published, but usually the data are sketchy and are restricted because of the unwieldiness of the equipment used. The work, in general, has not been comprehensive; nevertheless it has provided empirical relationships that have bridged the gap between postulate and practice so that by proper manipulation of formulae, a mill designer can anticipate mill size and power requirements.14 Although operating variables of a small continuous mill are not so easy to control as with the batch mill, with present day devices, and with careful experimental work, consistent results can be obtained. Nearly four years ago, in the Process Laboratory, Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. began a systematic study of the effects of several variables upon the performance of the pilot rod mill. A mill was built in the laboratory to provide the versatility required for the proposed study. It was constructed in sections so that it could be operated, with a few modifications, as a rod mill 30 in. x 8 ft or 30 in. x 4 ft. The discharge end of the shell was flanged so that either an end peripheral discharge or an overflow discharge could be installed. Thus the performance of at least four types of mills could be studied merely by changing the type of discharge or the length of the mill shell. The grinding experiments were designed so that a study could be made of the way in which the mill speed, feed rate, and pulp density influenced the performance of both overflow and end peripheral discharge rod mills. Four sets of experimental data were collected from the four mill arrangements. The mill in each set of experiments was fed at four rates of feed depending on the length of the mill, at four pulp densities, and at five percentages of critical speed. Electrical and mechanical controls were in- stalled to regulate all these independent variables, and auxiliary devices were used to verify the precision of the controls at each point. The dependent variables used to quantify the experiments were the reduction ratio and the hew surface area produced as calculated from sieve analyses. These were incorporated with the energy factor by the calculation of both the new surface produced per unit of energy and the Bond work index.' Rod wear, as a dependent variable, was not studied because of the short period of operation for each run. Exclusive of repeat runs, each set of experiments yielded 80 products, and the total study at least 320 products, all of which were quantified. With the operating information collected, these data presented a bewildering accumulation. Statistical analysis has been invaluable in unraveling the confusion and in presenting a means of establishing the nature and the magnitude of the significant variables. Data presented in this paper are those from the 30 in. x 4 ft end peripheral discharge rod mill, Fig. 1, when limestone was ground at feed rates of 1000, 2000, 4000, and 5000 lb per hr, at pulp densities of 50, 60, 70, and 80 pct solids, and at mill speeds of 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of the critical speed. These 80 tests have all been run at least twice, and occasionally a third time, to prove that the data obtained were reproducible. The techniques of operation and the methods of quantification of results are described in the following pages and the results analyzed statistically to show the significant variables. The variables are plotted to show the relationships that exist. A massive dolomitic limestone from Waukesha Lime and Stone Co. was used for feed during these experiments because of its availability and its tex-tural uniformity. This limestone analyzed 28.7 pct CaO, 21.0 pct MgO, 6.0 pct SiO2, 0.4 pct A1²O³, and 0.3 pct Fe²O³ and had a loss on ignition of 44.1 pct. It had a rod mill grindability at 14 mesh of 9.6 grams per revolution from which a work index of 13.9 was calculated. The ball mill grindability at
