THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Greenwood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R 11. The main part of this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28,. 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to' the west. The thickness of these sands run from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl of 40-gravity oil or better.

I have long been aware that ferruginous copper furnace-slags if fused in the electric arc will yield metallic iron containing copper, and in order to confirm this knowledge, and to obtain further information of the behavior of such slags in the high temperature and reducing conditions of the electric furnace, a number of samples of slag were fused in an experimental electric furnace. The results obtained, given in Table I., show that a very large amount of metallic iron was produced, and that this iron carried with it practically all the copper, gold, and silver, and more than 50 per cent. of the sulphur, of the original slag. The metallic buttons formed in the electric furnace were clean, hard, but not brittle.

Wildcat drilling operations in Montana during 1933 did not yield any discoveries of oil or gas that were of major importance. There was comparatively little drilling in the older proven fields, as most of the interest was centered in the Cut Bank field, where 44 wells were completed. The total number of wells completed in the state during the year was 79, of which 62 were productive of either oil or gas.

ROLIN1 in 1961 published a phase diagram for the CaF2-Na3AIF6 system in which substantial (-20 wt pct) solid solubility of CaF2 in Na3A1F6 at the eutectic temperature (945°C) was indicated. The evidence was that the halt in cooling curves associated with the eutectic was lowered progressively on the Na3AlF6 side. H olm2 has recently confirmed the experimental fact, but attributes it to evaporation losses shifting the composition into the ternary NaF-CaF2-Na3A1F6 system with a consequent lowering of the eutectic temperature

Measurements of the solubility of lead in liquid iron were made at 1550°, 1600°, 1650°, and 1700°C using two different methods, i.e., 1) liquid iron-liquid lead equilibration and 2) liquid iron-lead vapor equilibration. LEAD was long considered insoluble in liquid iron1. Today steels containing 0.15 to 0.35 pct Pb are used. One laboratory has found a solubility of about 0.5 pet in the 1600°C range. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that boron is a better deoxidizer than silicon but probably is not quite as effective as aluminum. Boron should, therefore, be readily oxidized out of the open-hearth bath, which implies that it is not recovered in significant concentration from any scrap charged; also that, if added in the ladle, it tends to oxidize out during teeming unless protected by the presence of a better deoxidizing agent. These conclusions do not apply to liquid cast iron, in which the oxygen content is much lower than in liquid steel. The possibility of conserving certain strategic alloying elements widely used in steelmaking, notably manganese, chromium and molybdenum, by the use of boron, which in small concentration appears to be extraordinarily effective in promoting hardenability, raises a question as to what extent any boron present in the scrap charged into the open hearth is oxidized out during melting and subsequent refining. This question is significant because the optimum concentration of boron in the finished steel, which is fairly critical, would be very difficult to attain if the boron in the charge were largely retained in the metal. Moreover, unless boron is substantially eliminated in the open-hearth process its use on a large scale would eventually make it impossible to produce boron-free steel except by restricting the charge to virgin material. There is at present, unfortunately, virtually no satisfactory direct evidence to provide an answer to this question; but there are indications from practice that boron is oxidized out in the open hearth in the production of medium or low-carbon steel, although it may be retained if the carbon content remains fairly high; that is, if the oxygen is kept fairly low. In the absence of direct data, it is necessary to rely upon the indications of indirect evidence, the best approach now available being a thermodynamic calculation of the deoxidizing power of boron in liquid steel by the general method used so successfully by Chipman1 in his study of the reactions in the open-hearth process. The thermal data for boron, upon which such a calculation must be based, are reasonably satisfactory; the only quantities not directly determined are the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid steel, and the activity coefficient of B2O3in an open-hearth slag; but these values may be estimated with ample accuracy. The results of this calculation, which is presented later, are given in Table I, together with corresponding data for other deoxidizing elements. This table shows the calculated residual content of oxygen in equilibrium with different residual concentrations of the deoxidizer in the metal;

(con~munication to the Secretary*):—It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental r6le played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four pheilomena of (1) excessive chlo-ridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals; (3) the presence of man-gancse oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is sbown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in arid or desert regions only; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much less soluble. Total crude fluorspar reserves in western Europe, containing more than 35 pct CaF*, are estimated at 12 million metric tons, while reserves in the USSR and Soviet sphere may exceed 5 million metric tons. The bulk of these reserves are concentrated in the USSR, Spain, United Kingdom, Western Germany, and Italy. Since published estimates of the tonnages of individual mines and explored deposits are not available for most countries in Europe, the estimates given in Table I for individual countries are necessarily approximate, as they have been compiled from various sources and modified and combined according to the author's judgment. The majority of fluorspar deposits in Europe belong to the late Paleozoic metallogenetic epochs and have been found within or along the borders of the Hercynian massifs. Deposits in the Central and Esterel massifs of France, those of Western and Eastern Germany, Sardinia, the Catalonian coastal range and the Sierra de 10s Santos in Spain, and those of Devonshire and Cornwall belong to the Hercynian metallogenetic epochs. The deposits in southern Norway and Sweden belong to the middle Paleozoic or later, those of northern England to the late Paleozoic or later, those of northern Spain and Greece to the late Mesozoic, and those of northern and probably central Italy and Switzerland to the early Tertiary. Fluorspar occurs typically in veins, lenses, and stringers, but also in bedded replacement deposits and pockets, and may be colorless to white, yellow, green, pink, brown, blue, or purple to almost black. Except for the colorless variety, the only kind which can be used for the optical industry, the color of the fluorspar does not affect its ultimate use,

IN the testing of materials there exist various methods of recording graphically the behavior of a material subjected to tensile stress. Prob-ably the most common method is to plot the tensile stress So, obtained by dividing the load P by the original area of cross section AO at the start of the test, as a function of the strain ?o, which is obtained by dividing the ?Lo or the change in the gauge length by the original gauge length Lo. A list of the symbols used here is given in Table 1. This method, while it has proved useful in the routine testing and comparison of various materials, does not have a very sound physical basis, as was first pointed out by P. Ludwik1, and consequently does not afford a very deep insight into the true physical behavior of the material under stress. Among the objections to this method may be mentioned: (1) that by dividing the load P at any stage of the test by the original area Ao a fictitious stress is obtained, which does not actually exist; (2) that the strain ?o = ?Lo /Lo is not an exact expression for the true strain for large values of ?Lo in per cent of Lo; (3) that when necking starts the strain varies considerably along the gauge length and the above expression no longer gives the true strain existing at any point on the outside of the bar; and (4) that the axial strain varies over the cross section of the necked portion and ?o does not represent an average of these strains over the cross section. Stresses taken from such a diagram would be only approximate and, if used to compare results of a test on a given material under simple tension with results obtained under combined stresses, certain errors would he thus introduced. In order to overcome some of these objections, various methods have been suggested, both as to the quantities to be measured and as to their graphical representation. THE quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The variation in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the British Iron and Steel Institute.1 From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots. GENERAL THEORY OF SEGREGATION The basic cause of segregation lies in the fact that the impurities are less soluble in solid than in liquid iron. The solid that forms from the impure liquid is more nearly pure than the liquid itself. If solidification proceeds slowly enough, or if the liquid and solid phases are maintained in contact with one another for a sufficient time, a condition of equilibrium is set up, which may be represented by a phase diagram. THE first person to investigate intensively the vast field of surface phenomena and capillary effects was the eminent English scientist, Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919), who laid down most of the fundamentals of this subject. This work was greatly amplified by Irving Langmuir,1 who, in connection with research for the General Electric Co., spent 25 years on the study of the surface chemistry of films, finally receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1932 in recognition of his work. At present, William Harkins,2 of the University of Chicago, is the world's foremost authority on surface-tension measurement and his independent work, when combined with that of Langmuir, resulted in the orientation con-cept of solubility and surface activity, which is now an important funda-mental in chemistry. The theory laid down by these men was first applied to practical considerations regarding petroleum reservoirs by F. E. Bartell,3 of the University of Michigan, in connection with an American Petroleum Institute research grant. The latest and most advanced application of Bartell's work is contained in an article published in 1935 by Allen Garrison,4 of Rice Institute, in which he relates Bartell's measurements to the ratio of oil to water produced by wells and shows the types of petroleum reservoirs where the effects studied by Bartell are significant. This article is intended as a minor extension of such work.

THE structure of cast A1-Si alloys is altered profoundly by modifying agents. Sodium, in particular, reduces the size of the silicon particles in the eutectic and tends to change their shapes from plates to nearly rounded grains. This refinement is accompanied by a shift of the eutectic to higher silicon concentrations and lower temperatures. Similar effects can be attained by rapid solidification. Hypotheses advanced to explain modification have involved the formation of a ternary eutectic,1 the removal of oxides by fluxing,' and even a presumed allotropic transformation of silicon. Other hypotheses assume that the modifying agent causes an envelopment of the silicon particles by the aluminum-rich solid solution, but attribute this envelopment to different mechanisms. According to various explanations, the growth of the silicon particles is obstructed by an immiscible sodium-rich liquid," an adsorbed layer of sodium,' or a ternary compound;5 his obstruction has been conceived as purely mechanical or as a colloidal action.' It has also been proposed that sodium reduces the surface tension on the Al-Si interface, thus permitting the aluminum-rich solid to grow faster and to envelop the silicon particles.? Still other hypotheses stress undercooling and the attendant change in the rate of nucleation of silicon, but fail to ascribe any definite function to the sodium addition." '" Procedure High-purity alloys of aluminum and 3 or 7 pct Si were treated with modifying agents containing radioactive sodium tracers. The experiments were intended to investigate the partition of sodium between the primary aluminum-rich solution and the eutectic, and, if possible, to determine whether sodium is concentrated in or around the silicon particles in the eutectic. Radioactive sodium fluoride, alone or mixed with stable sodium chloride, was allowed to react with the alloy for 5 min immediately before solidification in the crucible. Modification could not be attained with additions of less than the equivalent of approximately 0.1 pct Na. Some alloys were not completely modified, but comparison of the structures of treated and untreated specimens indicated a very considerable reduction in particle size of the silicon in all of the former. A treated alloy is shown in Fig. 1. Radioactive sodium fluoride was prepared by bombardment with deuterons having an energy of 14 mev. This bombardment (totaling, for example, 6 microampere-hours in one run) produced radioactive Na24 (half-life 14.8 hr) by the reaction 11Na23 (d,p) 11Na24. The radioisotopes of fluorine also produced have short half-lives and were not detected. A half-life determination by counting confirmed that the measured activity was due to Na24. The distribution of the sodium in the solidified alloys was determined by an autoradiographic technique by which a suitable stripping film is attached to a very thin metallographic specimen. After exposure and development, this emulsion remains superimposed on the specimen and may be examined microscopically or photographed by reflected light. The emulsion of the autoradiograph can be correlated directly with the underlying surface by simple adjustment in focus. The details of this technique have been described elsewhere." Results Fig. 2 is a micrograph of the autoradiographic emulsion ("autoradiograph") lying directly above the area of eutectic in Fig. 1.
