THE Spanish mine is in Nevada County, California, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City by road, and 3 miles north of the town of Washington. The mill and surface buildings are on Poorman's Creek at an ele¬vation of 3,000 ft. About 35 men are employed at the property, which is producing 50 tons of ore per day. Electric power, purchased from the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., is brought in from Alleghany, seven miles away. In the early days the mine was operated by F. W. and P. R. Bradley. Between 1883 and 1899 the production was approximately $900,0)0 in gold. The ore treated during; that time yielded an average of 60 cents per ton and was mined and milled at a profit. The surface, oxidized, ore deposit was 30 to 100 ft. wide and was mined by the glory-hole method. The milling-plant at first consisted of a Blake crusher an-1 a small Huntington mill; later three large Huntington mills were added to the plant. In 1893 a new mill was built at a lower adit- It consisted of 10 stamps and four Huntington mills. The gold was secured by amalgamation, the recovery being about 50 per rent.

Fine colloidal gold near Carlin, Nevada is disseminated in leached carbonate strata of the Roberts Mountains Formation in the Lynn "window" of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault. The ore body is generally stratiform and is more or less conformable to altered beds near the top of the formation, underlying Devonian limestones. Two sequences of mineralization are recognized: ( 1) an earlier base metal-barite assemblage related to early Cretaceous intrusives (121 ± 5 m.y.), and (2) a later low temperature Au-As-Hg-Sb assemblage of near surface emplacement. The earlier sequence consisting of sparse galena and sphalerite in barite with anomalous amounts of zinc, lead, nickel and copper, associated with dikes of dacitic composition, is of little economic importance. The later sequence of gold, realgar, cinnabar, and stibnite associated with extensive silicification and argillic alteration of limestone beds, has resulted in important deposits of gold. Argillic alteration of hydrothermally leached carbonate strata has provided the environment in which the most prominent gold deposition took place. Carbonate minerals in the limestone host rock have been replaced by microcrystalline quartz and chalcedony to form stratiform silica masses and recrystallized lenses of euhedral quartz. Zones of porous silicification are light gray to white, elliptical in shape, and more or less follow bedding. Silicification is bordered by argillic alteration and pyritization. Deposition of gold usually lies in a zonal pattern that encircles chimney areas of silicification.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) PREFATORY NOTE.-The first part of this paper was sent to me by Mr. Emrich nearly nine months ago ; and. I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before offering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it in some respects clearer and more complete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.-A. EILERS. I. PARTIAL REFINING IN THE ANODE-FURNACE. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 20 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furnace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace-afterwards casting to anodes and refining electrolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

NOW that the dust of World War II has settled and we and our allies are faced with extravagant losses of men, money, and materials, virtually the only hope that the United States and Britain have in the way of reparations lies in the capture of industrial, technical, and scientific secrets. Even during the war American and British scientists and technicians gained access to German factories, questioned German personnel, studied German documents, and endeavored generally to keep pace with new discoveries in science, industrial technology, and process development. Under various agencies this work continued for two years after the war. Altogether at least 600 American scientists and industrialists have gone to Germany and brought back reports and several times as many British, Canadian, and. Australian investigators have been similarly engaged under co-operative arrangements designed to assure the maximum of coverage with a minimum duplication of effort. As a result of these investigations and document studies, about 500 or 600 reports have been prepared on metallurgical and allied subjects. Those by American authors or joint teams have been listed in the annotated Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, issued by the Office of Technical Services in the U. S. Department of Commerce. Many of the British reports are also available in this country through the same office or through a British representative in New York. WILLIAM CHURCH was one of the founders and the first president of the Detroit Copper Mining Co. and was the first man to interest the Phelps Dodge company in the possibilities of the Morenci district, in the '70's. One rather interesting story concerning him is told by James Colquhoun, at one time president of the Arizona Copper Co., in his "History of the Clifton-Morenci Mining District." It seems that a geologist visited the Detroit company's mines and gave Alec McLean, then mine superintendent, quite a lesson on the proper mineralogical terms for what he saw in passing. Later, McLean handed out a few of them to Mr. Church as they walked through the mine on a tour of inspection. The latter had even less regard for a geologist than he did for sulphide ore, which meant little indeed, for in those days the rich ore was all oxidized, and there was no money in the sulphides. So Church was completely unimpressed by the geological and mineralogical terms that McLean had acquired from the visiting geologist. Church turned on him and warned him that so long as he was a member of his staff he was to understand that there were only two kinds of rock in his mines-the one was smelting ore and the other was waste rock, and he was not to forget it.

IN 1947 the metal-mining industry . passed through a year of readjustment; catching up on development work has caused production to suffer. Skilled labor has been short in most mining districts, notwithstanding the highest wage rate paid in the history of the industry. The trend has continued toward increased mechanization and refinements in practices and methods to increase the tons produced per man-shift. Improvements in procedures, however, have not kept pace with rising labor rates; and, in general, labor costs per ton mined have steadily increased since the war years. Prices of base metals have been the highest in a generation, but most producing companies can afford to pay the high wages. Capital expenditures have been approved for improvements to increase the output per man, both to reduce unit labor costs and to increase output. Surveys indicate a continuing

A Discussion of the papers of James Gayley, on "The Application of Dry-Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron" (see Trans., XXXV., 746, 1022, also pp. 315 and 745 of the present volume, and of J. E. Johnson, Jr., on "The Physical Action of the Blast-Furnace," p. 454. Chas. B. Dudley, Altoona, Pa.:—I am not a blast-furnace man, and this always puts me at a disadvantage because I cannot go into the details of the making of iron and steel. I have not the experience, and have to take the statements of other people, so what I say regarding the subject of this paper is not in the sense of an expert. When I first heard of Mr. Gayley's experiments, I said to myself, a I fear they will result in failure, since, apparently, Mr. Gayley has forgotten one chemical fact, namely, that carbon does not combine with oxygen in the absence of mater-vapor." This fact which was so astonishing when it was first brought out some years ago, and which those who are interested may find in the Journal of the Chemical Society of London, for 1885, page 349, and 1894, page 611, led me to think that the drying of the air would be a mistake. The general subject of the influence of water-vapor on chemical action is a large one; but the special point in which we are, for the moment, interested, namely, the influence of water-vapor on the combustion of carbon, was especially treated by Mr. H. B. Baker, in the papers referred to. Apparently, however, as the result of Mr. Gayley's experiments, we are to learn that the amount of moisture still left in the desiccated air is sufficient to secure perfectly satisfactory combustion. In thinking over Mr. Gayley's paper, it occurred to me that there were two alternatives, either of which might be chosen, namely, we might dry the air as Mr. Gayley does, or possibly we might, in a very much easier way, simply saturate the air at a constant temperature, and thus get uniform working and

M OST operators of open-pit mines in the Lake Superior iron ore district are quite familiar with the use of fuel oil in the heavy-duty Diesel engines commonly used in truck-haulage service but some operators, including my own company, Pickands Mather, have had butane-engine trucks in service for several years, and less is known of their operation. One of the first installations of trucks for iron-ore haulage was in 1939 at a deep open-pit mine on the Cuyuna Range. These superseded standard-gauge steam haulage. Trucks then obtainable were equipped with 150-hp Diesel engines, and the speed of these units on an 8 % grade would have been so slow, considering the depth of the pit, that plans for an all-truck haul out of the pit were rejected. Originally, summer job programs were intended primarily to help students defray their educational expenses. But as the nation's economy expanded with increased production and a growing demand for well-trained engineers, summer employment became an important means to help qualify future professionals and fill industry's need for them. Both the employer and the student thus derive benefits from such training.

Mining men, quite as exploration minded as petroleum interests, are in the position where most of the exposed crustal portions of the earth have been examined, where the demand for metals is high and likely to continue so, and yet where, perhaps, the tools fail for the economic exploration of many of the possible mineral areas more deeply covered with drift, alluvium, and later formations. At the same time the incentive exists to create acceptable substitutes for many of the duties of metal. The problem of the economic exploration of possible mineral-bearing areas is hence a vital one. In oil exploration, the absence of surface or shallow occurrences and the high cost of test drilling has led to the intensive study of geophysical techniques. Hence the development of the seismic method with its high certainty factor and its adaptability to standardized procedure.

The heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,' and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The values for tensile strength have been converted from tons per square inch to pounds per square inch. Figs. 3 and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700' C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, howevcr, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600' or 700' C. and quenched. It is claimed that the first mining of copper by Americans in Arizona was done at Ajo, near the Mexican border, in 1854,* a year after this region had been added to the United States, under the terms of the Gadsden purchase. A group of adventurers, organized at Los Angeles under the name of the Arizona Mining & Trading Company, came, to the district. This party of prospectors consisted of 20 men, led by Major B. Allen, J. D. Wilson, and William Blanding. † They went first to Yuma, where the party divided, some of them going southward into Mexico while the remainder took the trail to Tinaja Alta, where they heard of the copper deposits of Ajo, which is 85 miles southeast from Yuma.‡ They found attractive outcrops of copper ore, and set to work energetically, but their operations suffered many interruptions, because that part of the country was still controlled by the Mexicans, who were uncertain about the exact position of the new international boundary. The Mexicans tried to expel them, but they held their ground. The first shipment of ore, consisting of native copper and cuprite, came from what is now the western end of of the New Cornelia workings; it was hauled in ox-carts to San Diego, 400 miles across the desert. § Later shipments were hauled to Yuma and floated on barges down the Colorado river to the Gulf of California, whence the ore was loaded on

THE atmosphere, which plays such an important part in the manufacture of iron and steel, is the most variable element involved in its several processes; and particularly is this true of the blast-furnace process, which consumes air in large quantities. At no time since the blast-furnace became an important and widely used apparatus-even when it was operated in the most crude manner-have the variations in composition of the raw materials used been as frequent and as great as the variations in humility of the atmosphere. Important, improvements have been made in the blast furnace and its accessories, such as the hot-blast stoves, the increase in size and change in the shape of the furnace, more efficient blowing engines, the increased protection given to the bosh walls, and the careful preparation of' the raw material, all of which have exerted a pronounced influence on the furnace-operations from a metallurgical standpoint. But during the past eight years little advance has been made in this direction; the fuel-consumption has not diminished, nor has there been any material increase in production. Within that period, however, there has been witnessed the greatest development in appliances for the economical handling of material. So complete has been the work in this direction, that, except in isolated cases, in this country at least., a further extension does not hold out much promise of a satisfactory return on the investment required. THE Petroleum Division will hold two meetings this fall, one on the Coast at Los Angeles, Sept. 29, with the technical sessions in the assembly room of the California Oil and Gas Association and a banquet Friday evening at the Richfield Cafe atop the Richfield building; the other in the Southwest, at Dallas, Texas, Oct. 6 and 7, with the Baker Hotel as headquarters. Dr. Frederick M. Becket, President of the Institute, and A. B. Parsons, Secretary, will attend both meetings. Arrangements for the meetings are not yet complete but the respective local committees, working in close touch with the officials of the Division are rapidly shaping up the programs and other detail.

ARC welding can be defined as a process whereby two A pieces of metal are brought together, heated to a molten state by the heat of an electric arc, and fused into one piece. There are several kinds of arc welding: the metallic arc, the carbon arc, the atomic hydrogen arc and the shielded arc methods. A short description of each, together with its major applications, will serve to distinguish between them. Metallic arc welding involves an arc drawn between a metal electrode and the material to be welded, called the work or the "parent metal." It may be further subdivided into hand and automatic welding, depending on whether the electrode is fed to the arc by hand or by motor drive. This form of arc welding can be applied to most welding operations. Exceptions to its use consist of applications where very thin metals are to be welded; where it is desired to join the work with- out adding metal; or where extreme ductility may be required:

Undoubtedly other members have given their lives in the Service of the United States and the Allies during the past four years, but the following biographical notices are all that have reached us as yet. Lewis Newton Bailey Lewis Newton Bailey died of pneumonia at Camp Merritt, N. J., Apr. 30, 1918, at the age of 34 years. He was Master Engineer, Senior Grade, in the Fourth Regiment, U. S. Engineers, and although he was offered a commission as First Lieutenant shortly after enlisting, he preferred not to accept it until he had reached France. By those who knew him well, this lack of eagerness for promotion will be recognized as consistent with his whole character. Mr. Bailey was born at San Diego, Cal., May 28,1884, and graduated from the University of California, College of Mines, in 1906. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1916. During 1904 he was employed at the cyanide plant of the Buckeye mines, Forest Hills, Cal. In the autumn of 1909 he went to the Coeur d'Alene District, Idaho, and was first employed on construction work of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co'., with a short intermission at the Hercules mill, after which. he was sampler and assayer for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. until May, 1910, when he was obliged to return to California to attend to family interests. Returning to the Coeur d'Alene district in November, 1911, he was given charge of remodelling and operating the mill of the Coeur d'Alene Development Co., treating the output of the Ontario mine; this work he performed with credit and complete success. In December, 1914, he returned to the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., as assistant metallurgist and mill superintendent, his work consisting mainly in the testing and improvement of concentrator practice, which he continued with great credit until August, 1915, when family considerations required that he again return to the home of his parents at San Diego. Mr. Bailey was characterized by energy, both physical and mental, by devotion to his friends, associates and employer. He was particularly successful in his relations with the men under him and, in fact, was thoroughly well likcd by everybody with whom he came in contact.

The Mather mine of The Negaunee Mine Co. embraces nearly all of Sections 1 and 2, T47N, R27W. within the limits of the cities of Negaunee and Ishpeming on the Marquette iron range of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Operations of the Negaunee Mine Co., the stock of which is jointly owned by Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., are under the direction of the latter company. The opening of the Mather mine was described by C. W. A1len. Mather "A" shaft was completed to an initial depth of 2352 ft in early 1943. The shaft capacity of over one million tons yearly is in prospect of being realized by orderly development and mining, and sinking of the second or "B" shaft then started in accordance with previous planning. Mather " B, " also a vertical shaft, was designed as a twin to Mather "A" shaft and the sinking technique developed at Mather "A" was utilized in "B" shaft operation.

NO reasonably well-informed person believes that the role of minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic, will be any less important in the future than it has been in the past. The contrary is true. Industrialization is based on mineral resources and man's ability to make use of them. A nation's standard of living, its political and military power, will continue to depend largely upon the extent to which it is industrialized-and minerals are the raw materials both of the machine and the power to run the machine. Minerals are also the raw materials of human health and stamina. The world's healthiest, most vigorous, and most long-lived peoples have always been those that have lived in regions of the globe where the earth is rich, and kept rich, in the phosphates and other minerals required for the production of the so-called growth foods. Only a small proportion of the land surface of the globe is suitable under any circumstances for large-scale production of these and other essential foods. As things stand, only a part of this land is capable of such production either because the soil minerals have been exhausted by cultivation, or because they never existed in the soil in sufficient quantities.

ANOTHER meeting of the Institute has passed into history and it fully sustained the reputation of the Institute as a live organization of the men, and nowadays the women, concerned with the mineral . ? industries and those working therein. The field meetings of, the 1nstitute are cine of its pleasantest and most valuable features. As Dr. Raymond used to say, ((It is good for a mining engineer once in a while to see a mine" and these meetings bring back to the mines those who, through progress into higher executive positions, have come to visit them infrequently, at the same time that they give opportunity for the .younger men to see regions and mines aside from those in which they are then working. This, and the formal and' informal interchange of information resulting,, is of the greatest professional value to all, while the meeting of old and making of new friends causes each meeting to be notable in turn. This year's meeting at Salt Lake City was one of the largest that has been held outside of. New York City; 470 members and guests registered while many more were present at the sessions without attending to this formality. '
