SHOULD the name of our Institute be changed? Perhaps one should say, should it again be changed, for until 1919 the name was the American Institute of Mining Engineers. When the American Institute of Metals joined our ranks we became the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. To make it a full mouthful, and strictly legal, one should add the word "Incorporated." At the June meeting of the Board of Directors it was suggested that this name was not a particularly happy one, especially so far as members of the Petroleum Branch, comprising a quarter of our membership, were concerned-not particularly appropriate as the name for the professional society for petroleum engineers. Apart from the petroleum group, the present name is felt by some not to be sufficiently comprehensive. Most geologists and many metallurgists, ceramists, and fuel technologists, for instance, are not engineers. They could never qualify as registered professional engineers under the licensing laws and yet they are valued and fully qualified Members of the AIME. The Directors, at the June meeting, thought the idea of a change in name should be presented to the membership for discussion, and suggested this column as the avenue of approach. Nine years ago Dean Steidle, of Penn State, recommended among other things that the name of the Institute be changed to "American Institute of Mineral Technologists and Engineers." In an editorial in Mining and Metallurgy in January 1944 objection was offered to this name but "American Institute of Mineral Engineers" was suggested. A special committee appointed by the Board to review Dean Steidle's suggestions (W. B. Heroy was Chairman) suggested that if the AIME were starting from scratch, the American Institute of Mineral Engineers might be a preferred name. It was not thought that the change suggested by Dean Steidle was one of major importance, and the comment was made that "the present name has gained prestige through many years and is cherished by our membership. An important element of 'good will' is attached to it and some of this would be unquestionably sacrificed by any change." In M&M for February 1945, Oliver C. Ralston went into the derivation of the terms mineralogy and metallurgy, and pointed out that both Mining and Metallurgical mean "digging," etymologically. He went on to show, with tongue in cheek, that if we want a short and all-inclusive name it should be American Institute of Geo-urgists, or, for euphony, Geolurgists. Oliver's brilliant development seems to have been received with speechless wonder! Should a decision ever be made to change the name, we think most members will agree that the American Institute of Mineral Engineers is to be preferred over anything yet suggested. "Mineral" has become, through usage, a much broader term than is indicated in the dictionary. Webster states that a mineral, in the true sense, must be inorganic, but Murray's Oxford English Dictionary seems more liberal, defining "mineral" as "any substance which is obtained by mining; a product of the bowels of the earth;" and "mineral oil" as any oil of mineral origin, as petroleum or shale oil. Certainly "the mineral industry" is ordinarily taken to include those activities based upon processing all the metallic and nonmetallic ores and deposits found in the ground, including the fuels. One advantage of this title is that the familiar abbreviation, "AIME" need not be changed. The advisability of maintaining a well-known abbreviation is evident, and was recognized, for instance, when the Committee for Industrial Organization became the Congress of Industrial Organizations some years ago. But if the petroleum engineers are the ones to be chiefly considered in revising the name of the Institute, it is by no means certain that they would feel that they are much more adequately recognized in a group of Mineral Engineers than in a society of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. 'And then there remain, of course, the considerable number of professional members of the Institute who are not engineers at all. Comment from readers is invited.

The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black rock, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 yearn before the Christian Era and from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, go back thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages. COAL IN AMERICA In the Americas, there is evidence here and there of occasional use by the Indians. However, the first recorded discovery of coal, in what is now the US, was by French explorers, who reported an outcrop exposure on the Illinois River in 1679. Following this, other discoveries were made by French and British explorers, but the first recorded actual usage was in Virginia in 1702, where a French settler was granted permission to use coal for his forge. Earliest recorded commercial mining was in 1750, from the James River coaEeld near Richmond, VA, a deposit now abandoned. Besides local consumption from this field, shipments were made to Philadelphia, New Pork, and Boston. During the Revolution this coal was of impor- tance in the manufacture of shot and shell; so important, in fact, that the British sent an expedition in 1781 to destroy the iron works and

The extractive metallurgy of primary aluminum from its ores is discussed with special attention to the production of alumina from high grade ores by the Bayer process, including differences between American and European practice and a brief description of some processes for lower grade ores and the electrolytic reduction of the oxide to aluminum. METALLIC aluminum is not found in nature, but the oxides, hydroxides, and especially the silicates are plentiful. The estimated percentage of in in the crust of the earth is about 8 pct while that of iron is about 5 pct. By far the larger portion of this is combined with silica in the form of various clay minerals and igneous silicate rocks. From the point of view of extractive metallurgy of aluminum, these are low grade ores while the better qualities of bauxite are the high grade ores. There have been various definitions of bauxite but perhaps the best definition at the present time is that bauxite is a rock or earth commonly used as an ore of aluminum or its salts in which the aluminum is present predominantly as a hydrate or a mixture of hydrates and hydrous oxides. It contains varying amounts of oxides of silicon, iron, and titanium and traces of compounds of some of the less common elements. The silica is mainly combined with alumina as clay or clay minerals which are hydrous aluminum silicates, although a part of it may be present as quartz sand. On the American continents, the alumina is mainly present as gibbsite, Al2O3 . 3H2O, and the same may be said of the best known deposits of the Dutch East Indies and some of the deposits in India. In France and other countries in Europe as well as in Africa, the alumina is present mainly as boeh-mite, A12O3 . H2O, but in some of these deposits it is mixed with minor amounts of gibbsite. Some other deposits, such as those in the islands of Haiti and Jamaica, evidently contain two or more hydrates or hydrous oxides of alumina in varying proportions. Perhaps the main portion of the alumina may be present as gibbsite and boehmite with the proportion between the two varying rather widely. In the silicate minerals, including clay, the alumina is chemically combined with silica and has not been separated satisfactorily by mechanical or physical ore-dressing methods. Low grade bauxites are mixtures of hydrates, usually gibbsite or boehmite, with clay, iron oxides, etc. In some low grade bauxites, it is possible to separate a portion of the gibbsite or boehmite, which may be present as relatively hard and coarse particles, from soft or finely divided clay minerals by log washing or similar methods. This has been applied to the product of some mines or parts of them, but on other ores it is not applicable. In some cases the gibbsite or boehmite is almost as fine and soft and of nearly the same specific gravity as the clay minerals so that washing and gravity separations are not successful. The iron oxide, the clay minerals, and a part of the titanium minerals are often so finely dispersed in the ore that any of the physical mineral separation methods, including separations by gravity, particle size, flotation, and electrostatic or magnetic separation, have not been commercially SUCCESSFUL except on relatively small lots of ore. For these reasons, the only available methods of separation on the general run of ores have been methods which would be classed as chemical rather than physical or mechanical separations. Aluminum oxide can be reduced by carbon at temperatures above 1800°C to form metallic aluminum and aluminum carbide or nitride. The temperature for rapid reduction of aluminum oxide to metallic aluminum is about the boiling point of aluminum and above the temperatures necessary to reduce iron, silicon, and titanium so that the direct reduction of an aluminum ore with carbon will produce an alloy of aluminum, iron, titanium, silicon, etc., which may be mixed with carbides and nitrides. Also a large amount of the reduced aluminum may be lost as a vapor except in the presence of some alloying agent such as copper or other metals. While it is possible to refine such alloys or mixtures so as to produce commercially pure aluminum, the methods which have been found are too expensive for the present market. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Any one who has observed the increased efficiency of the Wilfley tables in a mill when fed from a reasonably good hydraulic classifier, as compared with tables fed from a spitzkasten., which is a very poor classifier, will agree to the advantage of ? better classification." It must be gratifying to Dr. Richards to know that, directly or indirectly, maim mill men are responding to his persistent advocacy of correct principles of ore dressing and are accepting the results of his investigations. As he says, these principles mean much for both the conservation of resources and the profit of operators. When Dr. Richards gives us accurate figures as to the maximum size of free mineral grains in the tailings of the Wilfley table and of the vanner, they will be of a good deal of practical value in delimiting the proper fields for the Wilfley, the vanner, and the round table. He has coined the terms ? free settling" and "hindered settling."' The series may be completed by adding "crowded settling," the main principle of action on both the vanner and the Wilfley table, which is the principle of separation in a mass of grains crowded as closely together as they can be and yet continue free to move between one another; and the occurrence of larger mineral particles in the Wilfley tailing than in that from the vanner is apparently caused by the more violent agitation, due chiefly to the purposely sudden reversal of the stroke. It seems likely that the agitation caused by the wash water dropping directly upon the concentrate on the vanner is more harmful than that due to the shake. For the very finest material that can be concentrated by usual methods, the round table is superior to the vanner because it does not, have even, the gentle agitation of the latter. The action on round tables is, not crowded settling," but "film sizing," 2 but agitation is harmful in the latter action. George Gates proved this harm 20 years ago : in slaking the first successful large-scale application of canvas tables in California gold mills he abandoned all shaking motion, although he had patented canvas tables to which such motion was applied.

Introduction It has been observed that where veins or other types of orebodies are intersected by cross faults, the continuation of the ore deposit below the fault is often of lower grade than that portion above the dislocation.1 In some mines, the reverse of these conditions has been noted, and the richest ore is found to occur in that portion of the vein beneath the fault intersection. Such instances seem to be less frequent than those where the richest ore is above the offset. The important and widespread influence of fault and vein intersections upon the localization of ore shoots is well known 2 but the factors that govern the position of the ore shoot relative to the fault intersection seem to be less clearly understood. The richest ore may be above or below the fault,. or it may occur at-the point of intersection, or there may be no change. Recent observations made by the writer in mines in Idaho and Montana suggested a possible explanation for the changes in the richness of ore below certain types of fault intersections. These observations have been supplemented by a study of the literature containing detailed descriptions of ore deposits at a large number of mines in North America. The results of these studies are presented herewith in the hope that they may lead to further discussion of this important phase of ore deposition.

Two types of automatic drilling controls, the Halliburton and the Hild, are now available and are coming into more or less general use in deep drilling. The primary function of both is to maintain a safe limit of torque on the drill pipe, this being accomplished by automatically controlling the weight or pressure on the cutting tool. Neither type will necessarily increase drilling speed, but by permitting advantage to be taken of "breaks" in the hole higher average cutting speed may be maintained. The control is essentially a safety device, and should be considered as such. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the merits of drilling controls, although the advantages over manual feed at the brake drum are obvious, but rather to point out some of the limitations. The Halliburton Control The Halliburton control is designed to operate during drilling through the agency of the draw works. Automatic and constant control. of the torque on the bit is governed by clutches on the control itself, and the line shaft to drum shaft drives on the draw works. In operations other than drilling the control is simply a jackshaft between prime mover and draw works. It is, of course, adaptable to any type of power. Because control of the torque on the bit is dependent upon the various ratios or clutch combinations available on the Halliburton control and the draw works, it follows that there are certain limitations in points of control. Table 1 shows the possible ratios which can be obtained with the control and a popular type of three-speed draw works, it being assumed that the highest possible gear combination-the combination which when engaged will suspend the least amount of weight-has a value of 1.00.

THERE are, as I have heard, varying opinions among men experienced in minerals as to whether silver has its own mineral [i.e., occurs native] or not. Mineralogical reasons and the authority of the majority persuade me that it has, not only because I have seen the natural material separate but also because I know that in mines of gold, copper, lead, and other metals pieces of pure metal are found without admixture, and I have heard that pieces of silver, gold, and copper have been found that had been reduced to their ultimate purity by natural causes. This is also confirmed by a German, Georgius Agricola, who says* that in a mine in Saxony a piece of metallic silver was found so large that the Duke who was prince and patron of the place had a whole dining table of square German style made from it without its being enlarged or worked on by any human artifice except for the tripod legs, and he often boasted that in this he surpassed the greatness of the Emperor. In truth I have never seen any metal except copper that was brought out from the mine pure and without any mineral, but I think that such a thing is indeed possible, since I believe in the greatness and power of Nature, who strives toward no other goal than perfection and purity. Indeed most of the minerals that I have seen have not been without admixture, not only of their earth but also of other metals, and this is more true of that which I have heard called silver than of any of the others. I except the silver that is mined in Schio in the region of Vicenza. These doubts, therefore, are not born without some shadow of apparent reason. As I told you above I believe that silver may have and does have its own mineral, for every substance that is converted into metal can exist pure by itself in its own species, as it also exists separately even though it be mixed with others, since it is seen that in each ore its metal is generated in a single body. Therefore it happens many times that whoever speaks of the ore of silver in one breath, without distinction, speaks of that of all the other metals, because there are few ores that are not mixed. But because the most noble things always have the prerogative of including in their name that of the others, where there is gold or silver the ores are not called

SILVER-cadmium near the composition AgCd shows three equilibrium phases. As with 13 brass, the high temperature phase is disordered body-centered cubic (8) and the low temperature phase has the ordered CsCl structure . However, there is an intermediate temperature phase which is hexagonal close-packed ((). In a recent paper, Speich and Mack' report on a study of the Ag-Cd eutectoid near the AgCd composition. Unfortunately, the phase diagram upon which they base some of their conclusions is incorrect. That diagram is taken from the Metals Handbook' and the error is that the 0 and ( phases have been interchanged. The Handbook gives the low temperature phase as hexagonal (designated 5) and the intermediate temperature phase as cubic ordered (designated . The error may be typographical or it may be one of confusion resulting from the use of 5, ,, and 0 for the intermediate phase in various papers. A careful search of the literature reveals that a number of authors have indicated the correct relative positions of the 13, 5, and 0 phases. The comprehensive work of Fraenkel and Wolf clearly stated that the high and the low temperature phases are either identical or are very similar. olander,' on the basis of electrochemical measurements, showed that the 13 phase is disordered and the 1 phase (designated 8" in his paper and in refs. 3 and 5) is ordered. Further work by Durrant5 using thermal and metallographic analyses provided a more precise phase diagram. A summary of these works was given by Hansen6 and shows the correct relative positions of the phases. Owen, Rogers, and Guthrie7 located correctly the upper two phases by X-ray diffraction. IN 1900, Elmore found that if an acidulated pulp was stirred up with an oil which was relatively insoluble in and lighter than water, and the mixture was al-lowed to stratify, much of the sulfide would be found hanging to the lower surface of the floating body of oil and could be skimmed off or overflowed with it. The action of the flotation agent here is two-fold, first to select the sulfide from the gangue-what to-day is called collection-and second, to buoy the col-lected sulfide away from the gangue. The action in collecting is illustrated by Fig. 1, which contrasts the behavior of drops of oil brought, under water, to the surfaces of gangue and sulfide particles, respectively. The oil displaces water from the surface of the sulfide; the water displaces oil from the gangue surface. If, instead of considering the solid particles the fixed parts of the system of oil, water and solids, we consider the oil and water fixed and the solids pre-sented to the surface of contact, the condition will be as shown in Fig. 2 ; the sulfide tends to be drawn into the interface and the gangue to be excluded. The sul-fide particles are held in the oil-water surface by the tension of this surface. The buoyant effect is supplied by the oil droplets in bringing the sulfides to the water surface, but not in holding them there.

p-n junctions to detect and measure the energy of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation are described. Useful energy range is from 1 kev to several Meu. Achieved energy resolution varies from 30 pct at 6 keu to 0.12 pct at 2 Mev. Parameters affecting the perfornzance of the present detectors and desired of a new material are discussed. DURING the last 6 years semiconductor detectors have been used extensively to detect and to measure the energy of charged particles. These detectors are made from reverse-biased p-n junctions. Electron-hole pairs are created in the depletion region of the junction, Fig. 1. The carriers are separated by the electric field and give rise to a pulse of current in the external circuit. This current pulse is proportional to the number of carriers and hence to the energy deposited in the depletion region by the ionizing event. More recently the discovery of the lithium drift process, first in silicon' and then in germanium,2 has extended the use of semiconductor detectors to the detection and the energy measurement of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation. These detectors now have a useful measurement range extending from the soft X-ray region, about 6 kev, to the hard y ray region of several Mev. Surface-contoured avalanche diodes can be used to extend this range down to 1 kev. There is however a desire for other materials suited to higher operating temperatures, and particularly for those materials with high y ray stopping power. The most important advantage of the semiconductor detector over gaseous and scintillation detectors is the average energy, E, required to form an electron-hole pair. Fig. 2 shows the quantum efficiency for germanium as a function of photon energy.3 At the band-gap energy, 0.7 ev, an electron-hole pair is generated by the absorption of the photon and the quantum efficiency is unity. The quantum efficiency remains constant at unity between 0.7 and 3 ev. It then increases as additional electron-hole pairs are formed by secondary ionization of the initial photoelectron. The rate of increase is about 1 electron-hole pair per 3 ev (actually 2.9 ev for germanium and 3.6 ev for silicon). This figure is constant irrespective of the particle type (electron, proton, a particle, heavy ion) and energy. In an ionizing event an incident particle of energy E will create N = E/e ion pairs. THE geologist or mining engineer, whose work takes him into the western United States, whether for the Government or private enterprises, is likely to be called upon to classify public lands as to their mineral character, or to review such classification already made, usually by a Government geologist or mineral inspector. The public-land law covering the matter is clear and logical, and a knowledge of its simpler principles is necessary to intelligent classification work. There are two classes of cases in which a classification of lands as mineral or non-mineral may be required: .first, cases in which lands classified as mineral will be retained by the Government and lands classified as non-mineral alienated; second, cases in which lands classified as mineral will be alienated and lands classified as non-mineral retained.

To date information is somewhat limited concerning the strength and bearing capacity of floor strata, which is of great importance where proper roof control is desired. If the bearing strength of strata is not known, the support may be excessively strong in relation to the support capacity of the floor, with the result that strong props sink into the floor strata, giving them dubious value as a roof support. The method described is used to determine how tests are made on dry rock to determine the required support area for the base of props or other structures which may rest on rock strata in mines. Relationships were established for the bearing capacity of rocks which were subjected to loads by means of bearing areas of various sizes ranging from 0.09 sq cm (.014 sq in.) to 700 sq cm (108.5 sq in.). This permits the evaluation of the bearing capacity of rocks by testing small areas for the de- termination of the capacity of larger areas.

Understanding the sedimentation of relatively thick suspensions depends on a knowledge of the concentration of the solids at various positions in the pulp and the times required for thickening. Flocculated kaolin slurries were studied with the transviewer, a device utilizing X-ray absorption in conjunction with a scanning mechanism. A mathematical model based on the Schuhmann size distribution in conjunction with Poiseuille's law yields experimental filtration rates as a hction of pulp density. These calculations show accord with the experimental results. Accurate predictions of sedimentation results depend upon determining the number and size of pores for given conditions, since the voidage of the suspension controls the volume of liquor that can pass through an element of suspension per unit time. A study on the sedimentation of flocculated kaolin slurries has indicated that their sedimentation takes place by two different processes, dependent on the initial concentration of solids in suspension. One process occurs in dilute suspensions (less than about 2 pct solids by volume) in which a multitude of relatively small flocs settle by hindered settling. In this case, maximal settling velocity is independent of container geometry.1 r2 The other process occurs in relatively concentrated suspensions (greater than about 2 pct solids by volume) in which the mass is considered to be settling as an aggregate network or as one large floc, defined as to size by the dimensions of the container. In this case, container geometry affects sedimentation results significantly. Furthermore, it seems that this single floc is in a state of compression from the beginning of settling, and that two phases of compression settling exist during sedimentation. The first occurs during the early stage of settling where liquid exudes easily and rapidly from the floc, while the second occurs in the compacting portion of the floc where water escapes more slowly and with much more difficulty. Sedimentation of relatively thick suspensions may then be thought to be a filtration phenomenon in which a pulp thickens by the filtration of its contained liquor through the aggregate network of pulp above it. When a well strikes an oil-bearing layer, the oil has a pressure which is generally sufficient to enable it to rise to near the surface (sometimes above the surface). As soon as a well begins to produce, however, the liquid moves through the pores of the reservoir bed and the pressure in the well becomes much lower than the pressure originally prevailing there. At some distance from the well, however, the pressure in the reservoir bed remains unaltered; thus the pressure of the oil has not only to lift the oil, but also to overcome the friction resistance in the pores. The fact that so many oil wells are gushers is a consequence of the energy accumulated in the gas. In gushing the well acts as a gas-lift. A mixture of liquid and gas (the latter partly dissolved in the former) rises vertically from the oil-bearing layer through a cylindrical casing to the surface. In time conditions alter and the well ceases to gush regularly, then the gushing can be further promoted by inserting a narrower tube in the well and connecting the top of the oil string to the tubing. If the action in time becomes irregular, the gushing can be kept up for a further period by forcing gas between the two tubes. In the oil fields the term "gas-lift" is used actually only where extraneous gas is applied, as in the last of the stages mentioned. The action, however, is just the same whether the gas exclusively originates from the formation, or is partly applied artificially. Thus by gas-lift we simply mean a vertical tube in which the energy of gas under pressure, and of dissolved gas, is utilized for raising a liquid. In gushing oil wells the pressure is frequently very high and the absorption coefficient 0.4 (expressed in vol. ratio) of the coexisting gas is not particularly high, so that in reality it should be assumed that a considerable portion of the gas, at any rate at the bottom of the gas-lift, is dissolved in the oil. For water-producing wells this is not usually of such importance. Shovel To further increase the efficiency in the production of their foundry sand, the American Silica Sand Co. has purchased a new and improved shovel that will be used for loading trucks at their Reynolds Pit. The [ ] new shovel will greatly facilitate winter mining operations and make possible larger winter shipments of the company's foundry sand. The Reynolds Pit is one of three sand pits in the Ottawa district owned by American Silica which produce sand that is refined for foundry use. Circle No. 1 Electric Switches The Crane Electric Co. has just announced the production of their R-1000, a new rotating limit switch designed to control the travel of any rotating device requiring interruption or establishment of electrical current after a predetermined number of revolutions. It is useful for machinery, lifts, and other power equipment. The switch is presented in a finished case, 16 gage, reinforced, with walls of sufficient strength to hold the entire mechanism and all the parts in accurate alignment. The worm gear combination has a 60 to 1 ratio, sufficient for most industrial uses. The number of revolutions can still be increased by using various combinations of driving sprockets, either on the shaft of the switch, or on the sprocket of the unit controlled by the switch itself. IT is not very necessary for those who work ores to return the litharge to lead, because they use litharge in place of lead ore and they use it the more willingly when it still contains some trace of silver. For the cupeling hearth can never be so well made or so cleanly operated that some little bit of silver does not remain in it, and some particle of it is also necessary by its very nature. But for one who has to use very much lead at one time, like someone who smelts sweepings or cements, or for someone who wishes to bring his operations to a conclusion and withdraw his investment, it is possible to have the lead again. The development of microcracking with progressive strain through failure in an orthoquartzite has been studied by means of optical and electron microscopy of specimens deformed experimentally at 200 MPa confining pressure, 20°C. Microcrack maps and statistics have been prepared. The rock fails through the development of arrays of microcracks which form around grain boundaries and are initiated at notches on pore spaces. No special microstructural characteristic appears to be associated with the peak strength, and axially oriented cracks do not begin to develop until well past the strength peak. Axial microcracking is a precursor to shear fault localization. Because most cracks form in highly shear stressed orientations, it is inferred that most of the work done in rupturing the rock is against the frictional forces on crack surfaces. An attempt is made to integrate the work done in this way, to compare it with the work done by the external forces.

Ore estimation at Cyprus Pima mine begins with estimating average copper grades for mine model blocks. Accuracy of the estimates has been checked four times in the last several years by comparing the estimates with arithmetic averages of corresponding blasthole (BH) assays. The data file now contains 3.567 estimated blockgrades and more than 10,000 blasthole assays. These data were compared by straight-line regression analysis at appropriate intervals as the body of data grew. Arithmetic averages of the estimates differed each time from arithmetic averages of the BH averages by nearly the same amount. More significantly, regression curves of the new total sets of data did not change position appreciably showing that copper grade estimates of blocks in all grade ranges from the lowest to the highest grade ores remained in error by nearly the same amount. Other studies revealed that core hole assays of the dominant ore type are biased and that that bias almost equals the error in estimation. Discovery of constancy in error indicated that regression analysis could be a means for correcting estimates of average block copper grades. A correction for estimated block grades was developed. It required determining which regression is appropriate for the particular problem, and a mechanism that is demonstrably sound. This paper describes the problem and the solution: No comparable study has been, found in the literature. Two other applications of regression analysis to metal grade comparisons are presented. Each adds a bit of support to a generalization which was suggested by correction of average block copper grades, namely, when performance of an estimate is to be evaluated, the variable taken to be the yardstick for the performance should be regressed on the estimate.
