The following description of methods for conducting gas-producer tests is probably the first attempt to give the subject an analytical, thorough and comprehensive treatment. In some cases where tests have been made, the methods have been so unsystematic and ambiguous that it has been impossible to secure comparable results. To eliminate this difficulty, the following provisional code of gas-producer tests— which has some resemblance to the code of boiler-trials of the American Society of MechanicalEngineers—has been developed. The primary object in testing a gas-producer is to determine whether the producer is working satisfactorily or, what is the same thing, to see if the efficiency is as high as it should be with the type of producer in question; and also to find out if the composition of the resulting gas is adapted to the work it has to do. In order that the test shall be of any value, it must be thorough and comprehensive, and must be conducted with skill and care. When so conducted, the test will reveal the economy of the'producer; and, by making suitable changes, the efficiency will often be increased very much. Particles present in mineral processing systems that are termed ultrafine are those that are small enough to be unaffected by gravity or the flow conditions imposed on the pulp. As such, their interaction with one another and with other larger particles are controlled by specific attractive and repulsive colloidal or surface interactions. Electrostatic repulsion between ultrafines is dominated by surface potential, double layer thickness and specific adsorption potential effects - controlled by pH, salt and complexing ion concentrations. Attraction due to van der Waals interactions must be assessed in terms of bulk and surface coating effects and of particle size and shape. The net effect of attraction and repulsion must finally be related to the average kinetic energy of particles in the real system.

Recent jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the Paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out 01 the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely diflerent ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. Experimental The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. 6. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Colum- bia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, 3/8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to Serve for suspension-A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs- 2 and 3. Definitions The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. There is only one way to transport natural gas and that is by pipe lines. In the past few years, these lines have been extended rapidly into areas which previously had been served mainly by solid and liquid fuels. In the subject given me, this extension is referred to as an invasion, which implies a rather forceful entry. Whether or not such an implication may be applied to recent natural-gas developments is unimportant. It is the fact of the extension, not its definition, which is important. For centuries, natural gas has been utilized for various purposes in many parts of the world. It was the foundation of fire worship at Baku. The Chinese used it for the evaporation of brine in salt manufacture. In our country, its history seemingly dates back 110 years to the vicinity of Fredonia, N. Y., where seepage gas was assembled and used for lighting purposes. A few years later, a %inch pipe was laid to a lighthouse on Lake Erie, and the early records of the Lighthouse Service tell of the difficulties surrounding this use. With the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania, there followed further development; the town of Titusville was piped with natural gas and, some few years later, gas was made available for manufacturing plants adjacent to the oil fields. Because no rock outcrops exist in the Cuyuna district, it is necessary first to make a magnetic survey with a dip needle, or possibly with a sun-dial compass, and determine the area or belt of magnetic variations and the maximum lines of magnetic attraction. A dip-needle survey is quicker to make, is sufficiently accurate, and will suffice. Regardless of how poorly defined the magnetic attractions may be, it is important that they be determined. Even if drilling has developed ore on an adjoining property, the survey should not be omitted. Iron-bearing formation is indicated by the magnetic attractions, but whether or not ore exists must be determined by drilling. The maximum line of magnetic attraction offers the best place to begin drilling. If no magnetic attraction exists, nearby developments are the only guide; and if these also are lacking, drilling is governed by guess. Test-pitting is not employed in exploratory work because the surface is too deep. Tunneling cannot be used because the topography is not suitable. Exploration shafts are a waste of time and expense, because from every standpoint drilling with churn and diamond drills is the most applicable method for exploratory work. Light drilling equipment only is needed. Rarely have heavier drills been required, for seldom do holes exceed 400 ft. in depth, and about 100 ft. of this is in glacial drift which is easy to penetrate. The deepest hole is 1023 ft. Because of the steep inclination of the strata and the narrowness of the orebodies, many angle holes have been drilled, mostly at 60' to 70" from the horizontal and against the dip of the formation. Angle holes are most advisable. If after initial drilling the beds are of shallow dip, vertical holes or holes of any angle can be used. The total cost of drilling a property is much greater if only vertical holes are used because more holes must be drilled to obtain the requisite information than when angle holes are used. Many tests for variation in angularity of a finished hole have seldom shown more than 2'; therefore, such tests may with safety be abandoned. Because the orebodies are generally about 100 ft. wide and cross a 40-acre tract at a slight angle, and as the dips are usually about 70"

Mine-run ore is received at Vitro in gondola cars and fed directly to a Cedar Rapids impact crusher. Following screening, the undersize travels through a recently installed three-stage sampling plant where successive cuts are executed by conventional Geary-Jennings type cutters to produce a final sample of 1 lb per ton of raw ore fed. Crushed ore is transported to one of three storage silos or to stockpile, depending upon grade and type of amen- ability. This permits the blending of a mill feed with some degree of consistency. Final grinding is accomplished in one of two closed circuit ball mill-classifier systems allowing simultaneous processing of two basic types of ores. High acid consumers may be leached separately in the required environment. Part of the free acid remaining can then be utilized by an ore stream entering later whose component ores require much less free acid for leaching.

The Spies mine is located in the eastern half of the northwest quarter of section 2443-35, near the village of Iron River, Mich., and is operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. Speaking generally, the jasper hanging walls of most of the deposits in the Iron River district dip at a steep angle and are exceedingly strong, standing without caving, even after mining has been continued for years and after large excavations have been made. The ore is fairly hard and tough and contains no slippage faces. It occurs in large masses, which are often egg shape, with the smaller end down, and can be mined in open stopes without the use of timber. The common system employed in the district is the shrinkage stope, or some modification of it. The Spies system was developed to utilize the advantages of the open-stope method and to avoid the disadvantages of the shrinkage stope. The Spies shaft was sunk to such a depth that the bottom, or third level, was in rock at a short distance below the bottom of the orebody, the shape and extent of which had been previously determined by diamond drilling. This is shown in plan and by the ore contours at the first, second, and third levels in Fig. 1, and in section in Figs. 2 to 7. In order to provide the necessary mills and raises, three parallel crosscuts were driven on 25 ft. centers on the bottom level. Drifts on the second and first levels were driven to the orebody and followed the foot wall in a southerly direction to the end of the ore. In crosscut 3, Fig. 1, raises 30, 40, 50, and 60 were carried up on the foot wall and holed into the second level, and were ultimately carried up and holed into the first level. These foot-wall raises carry the pipes and ladders, provide a means of ventilation, and furnish safe communication to all working places in the stope. From crosscuts 1, 2, and 3, raises were completed to a height of 32 ft., or the elevation of the first sublevel. They were then connected by east and west crosscuts to the main foot-wall raises 30, 40, 50, and 60, shown in Fig. 4. The crosscuts in raises 1 to 5 were then driven west and the

To the members of the A. I. M. E., who have given much and risked all to fight "Over There" with pick, or gun, or brain, and to the members who have chosen the sometimes more self-denying duty of remaining at home to help produce metals for fighters: Your experience in foreign lands has bred in you that spirit of internationalism which will soon be infused into every corner of our country by virile lads thrilling from a great experience in an old, yet new, land over the seas. To them the East will not seem as far from the West as it was, nor the North from the South. Sectional jealousies will seen despicable to one who has fought for a great ideal shoulder to shoulder with real men of other nations. And they who have willingly sacrificed much on the altar of service will have little patience with an egotist, be he laborer, tradesman, capitalist or engineer. The problems which peace brings to us are more difficult than those of war and their solution requires not only cool heads, tolerance, and wise judgment, but the "getting together" of sections and classes and individuals. The triumph of justice over individualism, represented by the draft law, must be repeated, for there are "slackers" in peace Is well as in war, and the spirit of self-denial expressed in response to Liberty Loans, Red Cross, and Welfare drives and Food Administration appeals must live. We have only just begun to learn how to serve. It is often claimed by our members that the engineer is not given, in the community at large, the recognition which his training should merit; that his reward is not as great nor his service as welcome as it should be. DURING the last several years many papers have appeared dealing with the structure of highly polished metal surfaces. The awakening of interest in this subject is due to the applicability of the electron diffrac-tion technique to the study of surfaces. The original theory of Beilby1 considered the surface of polished metals as of the nature of a super-cooled liquid or a vitreous, amorphous solid. The electron diffraction effects from polished metals have been interpreted by many to be a direct experimental proof of the correctness of the Beilby theory. This inter-pretation has been strongly opposed by others, so that at the present time the subject is in an uncertain and controversial state. In the present paper new, and hitherto unpublished, electron diffrac-tion effects from polished zinc are described. These observations indicate that the polished surface of zinc is crystalline.

Commercial strip mining of coal was first begun in the state of Illinois in 1911.l The annual tonnage of coal produced from coal strip mines in the state was very small until 1924, when the strip mines shipped 1.68 pct of the total state shipping mine tonnage. Since then, strip mines have gradually come into their own by producing a sizable percentage of the coal produced in the state. Table 1 shows the coal tonnage shipped from both underground and strip coal mines in the state of Illinois for selected years. The table illustrates the major role that strip mines play in the state's coal industry. Today, strip mining is generally conducted in areas where the coal seams lie so close to the surface of earth that a stripping method of mining the coal seam is cheaper than an underground method. Strip mining not only recovers 100 pct of the coal deposit, but may also be used as a method of mining large acreages of coal abandoned by the closing of underground mines. Open cut or strip mining is a very highly mechanized method of producing coal and is carried on in three distinct and separate operations. The first of these is uncovering or exposing the coal seam so that the coal is made available for mining. The second operation is that of actually mining the coal. The third operation is the washing, crushing and grading of the coal according to the producer's market. Description of Shovel The Marion 5560 power shovel is used in the first of these three operations. The large electric-powered shovel works forward and back across the coal deposits, removing the overburden of dirt, rock, and clay in successive cuts of 30 to 60 ft deep and 40 to 80 ft wide. The shovel has a maximum cutting height of 95 ft, but around 60 ft is considered to be the maximum economical cutting height by the operators. The smaller the depth of cut, the more economically the shovel will operate until a minimum cut of 15 ft is reached, below which the efficiency decreases rapidly. The Marion shovel may be used in tandem stripping in excessive depths of overburden. The other type of excavating equipment used in the tandem team is generally a dragline with a long boom of about 180 ft. In tandem stripping, the dragline is used to remove the upper portion of the cut and to place it at a maximum dumping radius from the place of removal. The Marion 5560 power shovel is then used to remove the overburden left above the coal seam and to deposit it at the shovel's maximum dumping radius. THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic industries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. SEQUACHEE Valley includes portions of the counties of Marion, Sequachee, Bledsoe and Cumberland. It extends in a general direction parallel with the Great Valley of East Tennessee, some 75 miles northward from the Alabama state line. It is separated from the Valley of East Tennessee by a mountain arm about a dozen miles wide, known as Wallen's or Walden's Ridge. The genesis of the valley, geologically speaking, is simple. It is an erosion-valley along the axis of an anticlinal. The point of the wedge remains in a row of low "saw-tooth" hills, running up the center of the valley. These hills are of Lower Silurian age, and consist of Trenton limestone, covered and protected in some measure by chert. Walls of Carboniferous age form the inclosing mountains on either side; whilst a magnificent arch of Hudson River, Niagara, Hamilton and Subcarboniferous strata closes the valley at the

A dc field was applied to liquid BI-Sx or Au-Ge alloys of eutectic composition. The liquid alloys were kept at a temperature slightly above the eutectic. The concentration changes due to electrodijfusion are large enough to cause nuclcation and growth of the primary phases at the respective electrodes. Nearly complete separation of Bi-Sn eutectic was obtained as well as substantial separation of Au-Ge eutectic. A direct current, passed through a liquid-metal solution, can cause substantial concentration changes by electrodiffusion. The magnitude of the change depends on the difference in ionic mobilities of the atomic species in solution. Electrodiffusion has been studied in many binary and ternary liquid alloys.&apos;y2 It was found that the rate of material transport decreases with time for a constant applied field, as a concentration gradient is established in the solution. A steady-state concentration profile is achieved when electro-diffusion is compensated by chemical diffusion. This may seem to limit the use of electrodif fusion for metallurgical application. However, a way of utilizing the effect of electrodiffusion is to combine it with crystallization or controlled freezing. rakin was first to propose this as a new method of separating metal alloys of eutectic composition at temperatures slightly above the eutectic temperature. It was possible by this method to separate Bi-Sn and Bi-Cd eutectics into their component phases. Angus et al discussed the possibility that the effective distribution coefficient, keff, could be varied by proper application of an electric field during solidification. The combination of electrodiffusion and solidification, called field-freezing, was discussed in detail by Pfann and aner. RELAXATION in metals has been studied in detail by many workers in recent years.1-5 These studies have shown that there is an energy-loss peak observed in a metal placed in mechanical resonance at low frequencies which may be correlated with various metallurgical processes. These experiments have been largely used to study single-phase materials. In order to study the effect of a finely dispersed second phase in a metal matrix upon this phenomenon, the relaxation behavior of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy in both the fine-grained as-extruded and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions was investigated by the use of internal-friction measurements. The alloys studied, designated MD 2100, consist of a matrix of commercial-purity aluminum containing a finely dispersed second phase of aluminum oxide. The aluminum oxide is present in this alloy in the form of fine platelets approximately 130A units thick and several microns on edge. The mean free path betwen dispersed platelets is approximately 0.5 p. The grain size of this alloy is extremely stable at temperatures as high as the melting temperature of the aluminum matrix. In the as-extruded condition the grain diameter is several microns, while in the recrystallized condition it is several millimeters in diameter. The damping characteristics of the alloy samples were determined using a torsional-pendulum device. The internal-friction constant was determined for this alloy in both the fine-grained as-extruded and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions over the temperature range from 343" to 923°K at frequencies of 0.9, 1.3, and 1.8 cycles per sec. An internal-friction peak was observed in testing the fine-grained alloys which was not observed for the coarse-grained alloys. This peak, which might be associated with a type of grain-boundary relaxation, was observed at each of the three different test frequencies for the fine-grained sample. The temperature at which the relaxation peak occurred for each of the three different frequencies is shown in Table I. From these data an activation energy of relaxation for each pair of frequencies was determined by comparing the temperature shift of the relaxation peak with frequency between each of the test frequencies, assuming that an Arrhenius-type rate equation is applicable. The activation energy of relaxation determined from these data is also shown in Table I. The mean value of the activation energy was about 6 kcal per mole. The activation energy for the relaxation process determined in this investigation indicates that the relaxation associated with the grain boundaries in this aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy is quite a different process than grain boundary relaxation in single-phase aluminum alloys. In these latter alloys, the activation energy for relaxation has been found to be the activation energy for self-diffusion, approximately 36 kcal per mole1,2 Where the activation energy is the same as the activation energy for self diffusion, it has been proposed that the relaxation phenomena is dependent upon vacancy formation and motion. It is apparent therefore, that, in this aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy, the relaxation must be due to another type of atom transport. It has been shown previously in studies of the high-temperature, low-stress, steady-state creep behavior of as-extruded aluminum SAP-Type alloys, that the activation energy for steady-state creep is one that may be characterized by the nucleation of dislocations from the grain boundaries. It is proposed that the relaxation behavior observed here is due to a similar effect. In this case, the internal-friction peak is a resonance behavior due to the time-dependent nucleation of dislocations from grain boundaries in the sample. The precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstatten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. A complete solution has been obtained for the figure formed by Fe4N. The structure of Fe3P, however, is not fully known and a complete solution of this figure thus cannot be obtained; nevertheless, a study of this figure has furnished some new information. Precipitation of Fe4N from Alpha Solid Solution of N in Alpha Fe Constitution of System Iron-nitrogen A knowledge of the constitution of the whole of the Fe-N system is unnecessary for this work, though the recent studies by Eisenhut and Kauppl and by Lehrerz have clarified most of the moot points; it is sufficient for our purpose to state that a Fe of high purity dissolves 0.42 per cent of nitrogen in solid solution at the eutectoid temperature, 591&apos; C., and that this solubility decreases at first rapidly and then more slowly until at room temperature the solid solubility amounts to approximately 0.1 per cent nitrogen.3

THE precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstätten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. THIS paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years The successful development of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitable die-casting machines The melting point of copper is 1084° C (1983° F ) and of a high brass about 900° C (1652° F ), as compared to 327 5° C (6215 °F) for lead, 419 4° C (786 7° F) for zinc and 658 7° C (1217 7° F) for aluminum, temperatures that ale indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals TYPE OF DIE-CASTING MACHINE In the well-known plunger and gooseneck types of die-casting machines used for casting the alloys of relatively lower melting point, much of the working mechanism is immersed in the molten alloy For alloys having the relatively high melting point of brass, this obviously is impossible Machines with a separate melting chamber are essential Two rather distinct types are in extensive use at the present time, the Pack and Polak machines, the former designed by Charles Pack and developed at the American Brass Co , the latter developed by Zoseph Polak, of Prague, Czechoslovakia The principles of operation of these machines have been described in articles by Pack1,2,3 and by Sieg 4
