In selecting solid solutions for the subject of this lecture I have been guided by several considerations. The bodies known under that somewhat paradoxical name play a most important part in all types of alloys; consequently, a deeper knowledge of their constitution must 'be of fundamental importance to both metallurgical science and practice. Further, having been asked to deal with some of the more theoretical aspects of metallurgy, I have been tempted to describe certain considerations, which I believe to be novel, in regard to the nature of solid solutions. These considerations constitute a theory that requires much experimental confirmation, but they have passed the stage of speculations, for experimental evidence has become available and one inference after another, that can be derived from the theory, is found to be in accord with well-known facts. In putting before you these ideas and inferences, it must be understood that detailed quantitative proof of every step cannot be furnished. Our conclusions must therefore be stated with the reservation that their acceptance must depend on the manner in which the discovery of fresh facts may either confirm or confound them. If we wish to understand the structure of solid solutions we nust carefully realize the manner in which these bodies are formed in alloys. The formation of solid solutions is by no means confined to alloys, but it is desirable to confin5 attention, at the outset, to intermetallic solid solutions. It is not easy to formulate a precise definition of the term "solid solution." It may be said that a solid solution is a crystalline body formed from a liquid solution or from an intimate mixture of solids, or of liquid and solid, that retains in the solid state an admixture of the two substances (solvent and solute) as intimate as that which exists in a liquid solution. The term is undoubtedly paradoxical, for one usually associates solution with a liquid, but the difficulty cannot be evaded by using such a term as solidified solution, for this might refer to a solution that has set, or congealed, without undergoing crystallization. Definition The term mineral inventory is a relatively new designation, born of the computer age and grown to common usage with the development of computer techniques for extending drill-hole sample values to regularly gridded data blocks representing in situ mineral values. The term has been generally accepted by geologists and engineers because it has a precise meaning which avoids many of the ambiguities of ore reserve. A mineral inventory is an estimated inventory of mineral in place and is usually achieved by dividing the deposit into regularly spaced gridded blocks to which are assigned estimated values using various extension techniques. A mineral Inventory makes no presumptions about the minability of the blocks or their cutoff grade. A mineral inventory estimate may be good or poor according to how much is known about the deposit, how extensively it has been sampled, and what techniques have been employed to assign estimated grade to the blocks Such an inventory, however, does not change with time, economic conditions, or mining technology, but only with new and better data and methods. Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself- only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense.

As can be seen from the phase diagram A1-W1 the equilibrium solubility of tungsten in aluminum is practically nil at room temperature. By quenching from the liquid state (50,000°C per sec), Varic, Burov, and Kolesnicenko2 obtained A1-W solid solutions up to 0.15 at. pct W. The quenched alloys were in the form of foils, 0.2 to 0.3 mm thick. Considering the results of Duwez and Willens,3 it is obvious that this thickness, which makes impossible a sufficiently rapid quenching, was the main reason for the relatively low content of tungsten dissolved in aluminum found by Varic.2 he present note shows that the metastable solubility of tungsten in aluminum can be appreciably extended in aluminum-rich A1-W alloys. The quenching technique and the procedure employed for the preparation of the alloys have been described previously.475 The resulting quenched flakes varied in thickness from 1 to 20 µm from experiment to experiment. However, the measurements of the lattice parameters were carried out only with flakes thinner than 5 µm. The areas of quenched flakes were between 0.1 and 15 mm2. The quenched flakes were placed into a 0.3-mm glass capillary tube which was then mounted in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. Straumanis asymmetric film position and nickel-filtered CuKa radiation were used. The lattice spacings were computed taking X(CuKa1) = 1.54050A for resolved and ?(CuKa) = 1.54178A for unresolved doublets. All specimens were rotated at room temperature, 26" +2°C. The lattice parameters were estimated from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. It was estimated that the error in the lattice parameter of the measurements on a single film lies within +0.0004A for lower and about +0.001A for higher concentrations of tungsten. The lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions A1-W are plotted vs the concentration of tungsten in Fig. 1 together with the parameters measured by previous investigators.' Each point of the present measurements represents a determination of the lattice spacing on different quenched flakes, for a given concentration of tungsten. With experimental accuracy, the lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions fall on the straight line passing through the already known data.' As estimated from the uncertainties in the lattice spacings of the solid solutions, the alloys were homogeneous within 0.1 at. pct W. The solubility of tungsten in aluminum-rich A1-W solid solutions obtained by a very rapid quenching technique is increased to about 0.95 at. pct W. This value is 6 times greater than the amount known up to now. -he lattice parameters of the resultant aluminum solid solutions with higher concentrations of tungsten than 0.95 at. pct W did not remain constant AUGER electron spectroscopy has been used to clarify the role of impurities in the embrittlement of AISI 3340 steel. Analysis of fracture surfaces has shown that the embrittled condition is correlated with appreciable antimony segregation at grain boundaries. The low temperature (400" to 600°C) temper embrittlement of low alloy steels containing various combinations of Cr, Ni, Sb, Mn, P, Sn, and As has been examined extensively for many years. General reviews of the area have been made by McMahon1 in 1968, LOW' in 1959, woodfine3 in 1953, and Holloman4 in 1946. WHILE much geological work and drilling have been done in Venezuela, the incompleteness of geological evidence obtainable and the restricted areas in which drilling has been done make any estimates of oil resources extremely speculative. Nevertheless, it is felt that the data given are justified, in the belief that the ideas of a geologist familiar with the region are better than those of a promoter. The oldest beds of interest to oil men are those of the Cretaceous, which are well developed in eastern Venezuela and about parts of Lake Maracaibo. In both cases, a hard massive limestone is overlain by a great thickness, most of which is shale. In the west, in places this shale is more than 2000 ft. (610 m.) thick, while in the east it may attain 3500 ft., (1067 m.). The limestone and parts of the shale are oil producing. In the east, the Tertiary where present is almost entirely covered by the Quarternary, but in the west it is well developed. In probable unconformity over the Cretaceous shales is found a series of sandstones and shales, which may beg called the lower coal series. It is well developed southwest of the lake, where it is the oil container, and is probably the lowest series exposed east of the lake. Above this is the Pauji shale, which is probably the point of origin of all the oil east of Lake Maracaibo and in the State of Falcon. It has a thickness of about 3000 ft. (914 m.) in the Mene Grande region. The upper coal series is developed as a great thickness of sands, shales, and clays, with some partly consolidated limestone. Its thickness may be as great as 10,000 ft. It is the oil container of the Falcon-El Mene region and a probable location for oil in some of the area about the lake. It may or may not include the so-called Maracaibo series in which the oil is found at Mene Grande. Over much of Venenzuela, the Quarternary is present in unknown thickness, which probably is not great. It obscures oil structure in all cases and presents the greatest hazard of oil exploration for the fields which probably exist below.

The property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, about 75 miles to the eastward from the port of Chafñaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges, and the mine and metallurgical plant are both on the westerly slope of the outer or western range. Mean elevation of the mine is 10,500 ft., while at the plant the elevation ranges from 9445 to 9700 ft. A meter gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 94 miles, of which 57.79 miles are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. and the remainder of the road is controlled by the State. Development of the Potrerillos mine and installation of the metallurgical equipment presented unusual difficulties due to the arid nature of the country, high altitude and remoteness of the location from any considerable center of population. As a primary step it was necessary that railroad transportation be provided in order that mine development and plant construction could go forward on an economical basis. Provision of an adequate supply of water for domestic and metallurgical uses involved the construction of approximately 178 miles of pipe lines, all of which have their sources at altitudes ranging from 12,000 to 14,000 ft. above sea level and traverse rough and difficult terrane. Water for metallurgical use is brought to Potrerillos from the Ola River, a stream originating in the high cordillera to the eastward from the property. It is delivered by means of a steel pipe line, 32 miles long, having diameters ranging from 22 to 36 in. Domestic water is supplied to the various camps through a system of pipe lines aggregating 146 miles in length, the Ola water being unfit for this purpose. These conductors gather water from numerous springs in the high mountains to the eastward from Potrerillos and deliver it to the mine, the reduction works and the port at Barquito. This instrument, shown in Fig. 1, is not generally known, though it has been used in England, and found very practical, handy and useful in work not requiring a transit or theodolite. It is not only a good miner's dial, but a circumferentor as well; that is, it can measure horizontal angles like a theodolite. The magnetic bearings are conveniently read on the inward-beveled upper divided circle; while another circle, graduated on the base-plate, is used for reading the horizontal angles with a vernier. Two leveling spirit-bubbles are sunk in the same base-plate. The vertical divided semicircle is attached to the compact-box by two short axes, which permit the semicircle, with its plain sights, to be turned down to a horizontal position, and rest upon a pin, which relieves the axes from strain. This adjustment gives a clear view of the needle and vernier, and protects the instrument from injury, when carried through low mine-workings. A groove in the semicircle receives a sliding-bridge which carries the plain sights, and a vernier for reading vertical angles. A ball-and-socket-headed tripod is used; but sometimes the instrument is mounted on parallel-plates and level-ing-screws; and sometimes a telescope is attached, instead of the plain sights. The instrument is admirable for all such Mexican surveys as Mr. E. A. H. Tays describes ;l and saves so much time and labor as to be vastly superior to the less accurate hanging-compass called by him a " bully " instrument. If the hanging-compass was ever used in England, it has long since given way to more modern and superior instruments.

THE dynamic behavior of a multiple fluid system is completely describable in terms of driving forces and resistances to flow. The latter are proportional to the vis-cosity of the fluid under consideration and inversely proportional to a property of the system termed the " effective permeability" to that fluid, a property therefore defined by this relation. Since three phases are usually present in oil reservoirs, it is essential to know the effective permeabilities to the several fluid phases, and the relationship between the composition of the fluid in the pore space and that of the flowing stream, in order to handle satisfactorily certain problems of oil production. In this regard, there are many unknown factors and parameters, and many that can be evaluated only indi-rectly. However, it is expected that work along lines similar to this present under-taking will help materially in solving these problems. Previous workers in this field have inves-tigated the two-phase systems, water-gas,1 water-oil2 in unconsolidated sands, and water-gas3 in consolidated sands. The ex-tension of the study of the flow of hetero-geneous fluid systems from two to three phases involved only slight changes in technique. The apparatus used in the present work, except for slight changes to be described, was that used by Leverett in his water-oil experiments.2 Correlation and interpretation of data were made by methods analogous to those used in two-phase work. The relative permeability to a phase-the effective permeability divided by the permeability of the system to a homogeneous fluid-was employed through-out in correlating the rate of flow of that phase with the composition of the pore space. Quantitative measurements of two inde-pendent physical properties of the system were required to determine the composition of the pore space. As in the two-phase work, the fraction of water was determined electrically. The gas fraction was deter-mined by measuring changes in volume accompanying measured pressure changes. Suitable account was taken of the solubility of the gas in the liquid phases, and of the vapor pressure of the water phase. Since this work was exploratory in nature, no attempt was made to obtain highly accu-rate numerical results. Reasonable precision and reproducibility were sought.

Any information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undisturbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a, method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamination by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been extensively studied by other investigators.1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as outside the scope of these experiments, which were concerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essential and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condition while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program. The procedure adopted was essentially very simple, and consisted merely in filling a given core with fluid (gas and oil, gas and water, or

A new electrical logging method is described which measures the resistivity of small volumes of material near and behind the wall of the bore holes. The very small electrode systems used are supported in the face of the flexible insulator pad of appropriate dimension maintained in contact with the wall. The measurements are recorded simultaneously with two different electrode spacings. This method provides a very detailed record of the formations and particularly of the permeable beds traversed by the bore holes. The application of MicroLog to the location of permeable zones within compact formaltions, such as limestone, and to the determination of the amount of sand existing in sequences of thin shale and sand streaks is discussed. The possibility of quantitative determination, providing a step toward the evaluation of formation porosity and mud cake thickness, is also examined. Field examples illustrate the essential features of the method. INTRODUCTION In conventional electrical logging, the spontaneous potential (SP) log is used to delineate the permeable beds, and the resistivity logs are used primarily to provide indications concerning the fluid content of the beds. When the formations are much more resistive than the mud, as happens, for example, in limestone fields, the SP currents are short-circuited by the more conductive mud column, with the result that the SP log is quite rounded. In that case, the SP log generally gives the approximate location of the permeable formations but it cannot be used for an accurate determination of the boundaries of each permeable bed.' Solutions for the problem of obtaining a better determination of the permeable beds in limestone fields were developed from two angles. One approach consisted in improvements to the logging of the SP, as given by Selective SP logging and Static SP logging. These new methods, which have been described in an earlier paper,' give good results when the mud is not too salty, but they are still in a somewhat experimental stage, mostly because the development efforts have lately been concentrated on another approach to the problem, i.e., the MicroLog.

The continuous process of lead refining as at present operated at the Port Piric plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Ltd. was a development from investigations conducted in connection with the ordinary Parkes desilverizing process. It is not proposed here to discuss the theoretical considerations involved in continuous desilverizing because this aspect has already been dealt with in previous publications.1 Continuous Softening Process For economical desilverization of lead bullion, the bullion must first be subjected to refining processes for the removal of such impurities as copper, sulphur, arsenic, antimony and tin. This refining is effected by first drossing to remove copper and sulphur and then preferentially oxidizing the arsenic, antimony and tin from the bullion in the softening process. The theoretical basis of the continuous softening process is illustrated by the portion of the Pb-Sb-O ternary equilibrium diagram shown in Fig. 1. Under conditions of complete liquefaction, metal of the composition of softened bullion is in equilibrium with an oxide slag containing about 9 per cent antimony. In practice, of course, arsenic also is always present, and while the 0Pb-Sb-As-O quaternary system has not been worked out in detail, it has been found that in softening drossed smelter bullion of the composition produced at Port Pirie, arsenic is always reduced to 0.001 per cent or less when the antimony in the bullion is reduced to a satisfactory figure. In the operation of the continuous softening process, a two-phase system of a bullion low in arsenic and antimony and an oxide slag relatively high in those components exists in equilibrium. To this system is added continuously a bullion containing 0.2 per cent As and 0.8 per

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER is to lay a foundation of elementary theory that might be useful in the discussions which it is hoped will be evoked during this Symposium. It is not my purpose to try to expound the details of the most complete theories as that would be impossible in the time at our disposal and, even if time were available, would probably be of less usefulness than a discussion of the principles underlying the advanced theoretical treatment. I shall try to discuss the fundamental bases for these advanced theories. There exists at the present time very much less need for a detailed description of complete theory than existed when this Symposium was being organized. The reason for this is that a series of papers by L. R. Underwood has been appearing in the magazine Sheet Metal Industries. It is understood that this series will he published soon in the form of a book. Dr. Underwood's articles are complete, critical and well written and it would be hopeless to try to do better in less space. The need, then, is for a brief treatment of basic theory. The objective of any theory of plastic forming- is to enable one to calculate the force and power requirements for the process, and where the deformation is not uniform, to calculate the distribution of strains- In the formed object. We need as the basis for the calculation the relationship between stress and strain in the metal, particularly for the combination of stresses imposed by the forming process. We need to know the stress-strain curve for some simple state of stress, and we need in addition some theory

THE results of an extensive experimental program relating to the effectiveness of gravel screens have been correlated. The factors considered in some detail include gravel size and condition of packing, sand size and size distribution, fluid velocity, fluid viscosity, and thickness and arrangement of gravel screens. Good agreement between calculated values based upon probability considerations and experimental results relating to the influence of the thickness of the gravel screen was obtained. All of these factors are treated in the correlation in order that their influence may be taken into account in ascertaining the characteristics of an effective gravel screen for a particular set of conditions. The details of the experimental program are not given in the present paper but a description of generalized behavior and typical experimental results are recorded in graphic form. INTRODUCTION Gravel screens have been placed in water and oil wells for a number of years1,2,3 with the dual objective of increasing the productivity and decreasing the entrance of sand into the well bore. An understanding of the factors controlling the effectiveness of gravel screens in this connection is of industrial interest because it will lead to the proper selection of gravel. Some of the fundamental considerations involved in the migration of sand through a coarser body of porous materials were investigated by Coberly and Wagner4 and further experimental work has been carried out by Gumpertz.5 Apparently the pertinent phenomena are somewhat complex and are influenced by many variables. The present paper deals with the prediction of the behavior of gravel screens under the conditions encountered in practice but does not attempt to discuss the experimental methods or results that were obtained as a background and upon which the prediction is based. INFLUENCE OF GRAVEL SCREENS UPON PRODUCTIVITY The use of a gravel screen may increase the productivity of a well by increasing its effective diameter, and this constitutes one of the objectives of its use. The permeability of most gravels and coarse sands that are employed in practice is so large compared to that of the sand in place that relatively little loss in production rate will arise from the use of material fine enough to cause the desired resistance to sand migration. For example, in Fig. I is depicted the approximate variation in the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels under the conditions of packing likely to be encountered in screens. The dotted lines indicate the variation that might be found because of differences in packing. It should be realized that the permeability is not a single-valued function of the. average grain diameter but is related to a large number of factors, including the size, the size distribution and the shapes of the particles. However, Fig. I does permit a rough estimation of the permeability of closely sized- spherical gravels and shows that the permeability with even the smaller particles is very large compared to that of most petroleum production horizons.

A theory of gravity flow of bulk solids like ores, concentrates, coal is outlined and an example of design for unobstructed flow is given. Mass-flow and plug-flow patterns are defined and related to the geometry of the bin. The effect of these patterns on segregation, first in-first out flow, and caking is described. This paper is a report on the results from the AIME sponsored project "Flow of Bulk Solids" which was carried out under the author's direction at the Utah Engineering Experiment Station, University of Utah, during the period 1956-1962. The theory has been applied to the design of numerous industrial storage plants. A QUANTITATIVE METHOD OF DESIGN FOR FLOW There is hardly an industry which does not store and handle solid materials in bulk form. When the volume of the solids is large, gravity is invariably relied upon to cause the solids to flow out of storage, through channels and chemical reactors. Such materials as ore, coal, cement, flour, plastics, clay, soil, to which a general term of bulk solids is applied, flow by gravity or are expected to flow by gravity in thousands of installations and by billions of tons annually. The chemical and process industry depends on gravity flow of solids in process and out of storage. Mining relies on gravity flow in block-caving, in ore passes, as well as in storage and loading bins. Agriculture uses gravity flow in elevators, in feed plants, and in farm silos. In practice, satisfactory gravity flow is seldom attained. Such problems as doming, piping (rat-holing), lack of live capacity, segregation, deterioration in storage, harass industry. In spite of the universality of these problems, until recently, there has been no theory of solids flow, no method of predicting how a solid would behave, and how the channel, bin, or hopper should be designed. In the late nineteen forties and early fifties, the theory of plasticity came of age and simultaneously the computer became widely available. These two factors permitted the development of a theory of flow of bulk solids. The work was conducted during the years 1953-1961. In conjunction with the development of the theory a method to measure the flowability of solids was also developed1-7 and the theory was ap-plied to the design of ore pockets, storage plants,16 chemical reactors and adsorption columns. A comprehensive report of this work is given in a previous work." THEORY OF FLOW The most important question which a theory of flow has to answer is: what conditions need to be satisfied for a given solid to flow uniformly and without obstructions through a channel? First of all, the following observations are made:

Ore broken at the mine or quarry face generally is loaded by power shovels into large trucks or rail cars and hauled to a primary crushing plant where it is reduced to a more workable size for ease in handling. The primary crushing plant is customarily located as close as possible to the center of gravity of the ore body and the projected limits of the mine pit to minimize the cost of hauling and to increase safety from flying rock as a result of blasting operations. A belt conveyor is used to transport the crushed product to a nearby ore treatment plant or, should this plant be located some distance away, the ore is loaded directly into cars and hauled by rail. Between trips the crusher product is accumulated in bins or stock piles. In all open pit mining and quarrying operations, the power shovel, the transportation equipment, and the primary crushing plant should work as a team, complementing each other. When establishing the design and selecting the equipment for these closely integrated operations, capital and operating costs for each unit operation must be weighed to achieve an optimum balance. Rising labor costs have given impetus to the universal trend toward greater efficiency, higher speed and larger equipment, and higher degrees of automatic control. The result is that power shovels have increased in size, haulage trucks are larger and faster, and only coarse crushers with feed openings adequate to receive run-of-mine lumps of ore with a minimum of secondary blasting are selected for new installations. These coarse crushers also have large through-put capacities, even when adjusted to produce a 6- to 10-in. size of product, thus making it possible to use a single stage of coarse crushing at the average mine. The use of a single crusher results in a compact crushing plant layout consisting of a dumping pocket for receiving loads of run-of-mine ore, a coarse crusher followed by a surge chamber for the crushed product, and a feeder to withdraw the ore at a uniform rate to deposit it on a belt conveyor.
