The least work analysis of constrained deformation, first proposed by Taylor and recently modified by Chin, Hosford, and Mendorf to include twinning, has been applied to the problem of axisynmetric flow. Calculations were made, for the case of (111}(110) slip and {111}(112) twinning applicable to fcc deformation. The solutions were obtained by linear programming techniques and with the aid of computer methods. The results show that in axisymnzetric tension the onset of twinning tends to decrease the plastic strength anisotropy as compared with the case of defortnation by slip alone. In compression, however, the strength anisotropy is increased as a result of twinning. The [100] and 11111 orientations and their vicinity are unfavorable for twinning in tension and compression, respecticely. With slight modifications, the present results may be applied to bcc metals deform ing by {110}(111j slip and (112} (111) twinning. Implications of present results to wire texture development of low stacking fault energy fcc materials arc discussed. PREVIOUSLY we' have applied linear programming techniques to obtain solutions to Taylor's least work analysis2 of constrained deformation of single crystals undergoing axisymmetric flow, such as occurs in an axially loaded polycrystalline aggregate. These solutions yielded values of the parameter M = o/.r = Y/w which relates the external stress-strain (u-c) curve to the shear stress-shear strain (7-y) curve for the crystal. The value of M is dependent on crystal orientation and hence enters significantly in texture strengthening considerations.3'4 Recently the Taylor hypothesis was modified by Chin, Hosford, and Mendorf' to include mechanical twinning. The latter has now been applied to the problem of axisymmetric flow and the results are reported in this paper. Calculations have been made for {111 )( 110) slip and {111 )(112) twinning applicable to fcc crystals. With minor changes in the indices of the slip and twin systems, the present results are also applicable to bcc crystals which slip on (110) (111) and twin on {112)(111) systems.

This excellent paper by Dr. Colombo parallels quite closely the bench and pilot work done by the Hanna Research Laboratory on the Mesabi oxidized taconites. Because of the vast reserves and future ore requirements the need to perfect the selective flocculation-flotation process becomes very necessary. The selective flocculation process is a very efficient method of desliming, leaving a fairly clean, upgraded product for flotation. However, one of the problems that we have encountered in this process was some very fine, -2 micron liberated goethite in the slimes that did not flocculate. The complete slime removal is not necessary. We remove slimes to the extent of about 5% of the iron units. However, on difficult treating ores we would remove more slimes. The reclaimed water from our pilot plant has a turbidity of about 1000-3000 ppm. We can obtain lower turbidity water but to do this would involve additional lime as a tailing flocculant and we would run the risk of flocculating the entire ground pulp in the selective flocculation process because of the increased Ca level in the water. We have about seven different geological ore types out of 17 recognizable ore types that are treatable. All of these ore types require different degrees of dispersion and grinding which is a problem. INTRODUCTION IN the iron-cobalt system there are several property-composition relationships of theoretical importance. The alloys are ferromagnetic exhibiting a maximum saturation at approximately 33 at. pct cobalt;1 the interatomic distances at room temperature show large positive deviations from Vegard's rule;2 and in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt there is an order-disorder transition which has a large effect on other properties. The thermal expansion data for the system have been reported3,4.5,6 only from room temperature to 100°C, and for this temperature range a minimum in coefficient in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt is well established. 3,4,6 This paper reports the expansion properties in the iron-cobalt system for temperatures from 30 to 850°C, shows the correlation with other physical properties, and proposes an explanation for the interrelation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermal expansivities of iron-cobalt alloys in 10 pct steps in composition were determined from 30 to about 850°C. The major series of alloys was prepared by induction melting from Armco iron and cobalt rondelles with the addition of about 0.6 wt pct manganese. This series was supplemented by three compositions: high purity electrolytic iron, high purity electrolytic cobalt, and an alloy of 52.1 wt pct cobalt prepared from the high purity electrolytic iron and electrolytic cobalt by vacuum-melting. The compositions of both series of alloys are given in Table I. The specimens for measurement were prepared from the cast ingots by first hot-swaging followed in most instances by cold-swaging to 0.180-in. diam rod. Some alloys in the region of 50 pct cobalt, because of inherent cold-brittleness, were swaged hot to the final diameter. The expansion specimens were approximately 2 ½ in. long with flat-ground and polished ends. Before measurement they were annealed in hydrogen for r hr at 900°C. In the apparatus used for the thermal expansivity measurements (Fig I), a modification of that designed by Hidnert and Sweeney,7 the differential expansion between the specimen and vitreous silica was measured by a dial micrometer reading to 0.001 mm. An invar fixture supported the dial gauge, and this fixture, in turn, was connected to a split invar collar which supported the outer silica tube. A pyrex "T" was placed over the outer silica tube and was sealed to the invar collar by Apiezon Q sealing compound. A movable hollow vitreous silica rod which rested on top of the test specimen slid through a flexible rubber diaphragm cemented to the top of the pyrex "T." INTRODUCTION The Heath Steele mine is located in the Bathurst-Newcastle area of northern New Brunswick. It is jointly owned by American Metal Climax, Inc. and the International Nickel Company of Canada who hold a 75% and 25% interest, respectively. The ore deposits of lead, zinc and copper sulphide occur in very fine grained pyrite and/or pyrrhotite masses. A consistent spatial relationship with a quartz feldspar porphyry is characteristic of these deposits and the many other similar sulphide deposits in the district. The two principal mineral assemblages of pyrite-sphalerite-galena, and pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pyrite, occupy characteristic positions relative to the enclosing rocks. This feature and the nature of the sulphide mineralization are described and the variations in metal content are noted .with special emphasis on the lead-zinc ore zones. The mine product ion rate is 3,000 tons per day of a mixed lead- zinc and copper ore which is extracted from the B-1 zone. The complex nature of the ores presents many metallurgical problems. Optimum metal recoveries are achieved when milll feed grades are relatively consistent and proportions of the contained metals are with in acceptable limits. Ore outlines and stoping blocks are delimited by close spaced diamond drilling. From this information it is possible to forecast the grade of any portion of a stoping block. Production from the various stopes may then be scheduled so as to achieve an acceptable mill feed grade.

(communication to the Secretary*):—While this paper is primarily intended as a discussion of Mr. Riter's, I think it will be best to indicate my criticism by describing my own field-methods. It has been my experience that, for ordinary work, the regular transit-book is to be preferred to the card-system for recording notes. This is specially true when computations in the field are required, for it is then necessary to have at hand the total latitudes, departures, ancl elevations. Moreover, the transit-book is easier to carry and manipulate in wet or cramped places, and is not as liable to damage as the loose leaf or card. I use a regular transit-book in the field, and then copy my notes, sketches, etc., in an o5ce-book, entering also the latitudes, departures, and other reductions. These values are then copied into the field-book, securing a duplicate record, in case either book should be lost or mislaid. In the field-book, the notes are entered on the left-hand, and the sketches and remarks on the right-hand page. The next two pages are left blank for the latitudes, departures, bearings, reduced distances, etc. Of course, the notes for the different parts of the mine are entered in the field-book in the order in which they are surveyed; but in the they are entered systematically. It has been my experience that the system of keeping notes used by a surveyor, is particularly adapted to the needs and temperament of the individual. Otherwise, he would not be

A method for determining average reservoir pressure is presented, which is simpler to apply than that devised by Matthews. Brons and Hazebroek. For bounded reservoirs, identical results are obtained if stabilized-flow conditions prevail. The present method yields inferior results in the transient state. The method can, with a slight modification, also be used for water-drive reservoirs. INTRODUCTION In the method proposed by Matthews, Brons and Haze-broek' for determining average reservoir pressure in a multi-well reservoir, the cumulative production (the production time of each well) enters twice: once when the buildup is plotted against In (t + t)/At to arrive at p*, and a second time when the correction, p*-p is determined with one of the several formulas for differently shaped drainage areas. Once a steady state has been attained, however, the previous production history should be immaterial. The same pressure distribution could have been arrived at after different cumulative productions of the individual wells. In principle, therefore, it should be possible to determine average pressures without referring to cumulative productions. In the following paragraphs an expression is presented for the difference between the pressure in a producing well and the average pressure of its drainage area. Then the build-up time needed to overcome this difference is indicated. (written-discussion-? ).--The advantages of the incline-slicing system have' been ably pointed out by Mr. Scott in his paper in the November, 1917, Bulletin, and also by Mr. P. B. Scotland in the Engineering & Mining Journal, Apr. 7, 1917. From the standpoint of efficiency and economy this method is far superior to the top-slice system as generally practised. However, as regards ventilation, and the danger of mine fires, it is just as necessary to use a mechanical ventilating system in mines worked by this method as it is in those worked by the horizontal top-slice system. Mechanical ventilation not only improves working conditions in top-slice stopes but, if properly designed for the particular mine in question, permits an immediate attack to he made in the event of a mine fire with a greater degree of safety to the men. In the course of time, incline top-slicing will probably take the place of the horizontal top-slicing system just as the incline cut-and-fill has superseded the horizontal cut-and-fill stoping method. While incline top-slicing has been tried in several districts on a very limited scale with inconclusive results, the Coronado is the-only large mine at which it has yet been thoroughly tested, and there it proved to be a complete success. As Mr. Scott's figures show, the tonnage has been more than doubled, with a simultaneous reduction in costs. As has been the history with all other innovations in mining, considerable hesitation will probably be shown in introducing this method in other mines. For example, when the incline cut-and-fill system was put forward as a substitute for the horizontal cut-and-fill stoping method many mining men of good repute were doubtful of its success and post-poned its introduction as long as possible, giving as their reason certain geologic conditions which would make the incline cut-and-fill impracticable. At the present time, most of the mining companies in the South-west, who in the past had used the horizontal cut-and-fill system, have already changed over, or are in the process of changing, and have proved that in the majority of cases horizontal cut-and-fill stopes can be successfully operated under the incline cut-and-fill system. Large horizontal cut-and-fill stopes can now be found in only a few exceptional cases, and

This paper covers the theory and present state of development of an apparatus for the nonmathematical analysis of complex problems of reservoir and well behavior. At the present stage of development of this apparatus, it is capable of solving the water-drive problem of any reservoir performance for which a mathematical solution has been presented in the literature, either on the basis of steady or unsteady-state flow analysis. The theory is presented for the extension of the scope of this analyzer along the lines of the present development. The resulting apparatus should be able to solve reservoir-performance problems previously thought too difficult for practical solution by mathematical means. As an illustration of its operation and present scope, the analysis of a reservoir problem and synthesis of expected performance is presented. Introduction In this method† of analyzing problems of petroleum-reservoir and well behavior, the porous continuum of the reservoir is assumed to be divided into small blocks, or units. Each block is assumed to be small enough so that for a material balance on the fluids in the block an average pressure for the block can be used. In analyzing reservoir behavior from this point of view by mathematical means, a set of simultaneous difference equations would be obtained (two for each block), which must be solved or combined into a partial differential equation. In the method to be described here, instead of solving these sets of equations analytically, electrical units are constructed, which will behave in respect to the flow of electricity exactly as the reservoir units behave under various conditions of fluid flow. The electrical units are then wired together in the same way that the reservoir units are connected naturally by virtue of their geometrical locations and shapes. Fluid-Flow Equations Consider a block in a reservoir. Assume that reservoir fluid (or fluids) is flowing in at one face and out at the opposite face, and that the block is small enough so that at all points the stream lines are within one degree of perpendicular to the face. Furthermore, assume that the pressure, pi, at the upstream face (Fig, I) is not more than one per cent greater than P2 the pressure at the downstream face. A material balance will show that the mass of fluid flowing out less the mass of fluid flowing in will equal the change in density times the fluid volume. This is expressed in the equation:

MY REMARKS, which I feel highly honored in being invited to make, shall be limited to a consideration of -the mining and metallurgical problems involved in this question; in fact, these problems alone might well be considered as suffi¬cient to explain the existence of the Ruhr situation and to justify the steps taken by France in this affair. Comparing the France of pre-war days with the France of the period following the Versailles treaty indicates clearly how the Ruhr question is a direct consequence of the new economic conditions which have prevailed in Europe since peace was signed between the Allies and Germany. Before the war, in 1913 for instance, the French out¬put of iron ore was 22,000,000 tons. This output, which decreased considerably during and immediately after the war, has about regained its previous level. It should be noted that 96 per cent. of the production of iron in France is obtained from the eastern part of the country, in the districts of Nancy, Briey,. Longwy, Metz, and Thionville. This concentration of practi¬cally all the iron mines into one district creates a very serious problem for France, involving strategic and economic consequences. The strategic problem arises from the fact that the whole iron resources of France lie close to the frontier of Germany, at a distance of only a few miles; hence it is of the' utmost importance for France to be assured that her eastern frontier shall not be at the mercy of a sudden invasion by an army which could in a few hours deprive France of her iron resources and render her powerless to defend herself. Invaded by her Eastern neighbor three times during the past 100 years, France has had dire experience with what such invasions mean for her. Wherever the German armies have passed, they have left an inefface¬able trail of desolation. France, therefore, intends to protect herself by sufficient and efficient guarantees against renewed invasions of her territory.

Thin, heavily doped n-type layers of GaSb have been grown on p-type GaSb substrates. Techniques have been developed for the growth of the n-type layers from a tellurium-doped gallium-rich solution. The solution used consists of 95 at. pct Ga and 5 at. pct Sb. The process consists of immersing the p-type wafer in the solution at a temperature slightly above the liquidus temperature, holding briefly to permit dissolution of the substrate surface, then decreasing the temperature to a value slightly below the liquidus to obtain 1 HE resistivity of n-type GaSb varies linearly with applied hydrostatic pressure, while the resistivity of p-type GaSb is insensitive to such pressure.1,2 The growth. Growth from a solution of GaSb in tin will also be described. In either case the substrate is clamped to a shelf at one end of a graphite boat, and immersion of the wafer and subsequent decanting of the solution is accomplished simply by tilting the furnace. The process is useful for the formation of p-n junctions in III-V compounds and has the advantage that the problems normally associated with diffusion of Group VI elements are not present. Layers up to 4.0 mils in thickness have been grown by the process. material therefore should be useful in a hydrostatic pressure-sensing device. A practical hydrostatic pressure sensor, however, requires the fabrication of GaSb sensing elements of several hundred ohms resistance. Attempts were made to prepare such elements by diffusion, taking advantage of the high sheet resistance of the thin diffused layers and depending upon the p-n junction to provide isolation from the base layer. IN the presentation which follows, washability curves, such as are commonly used in making studies preliminary to the cleaning of any coal or to the concentration of any mineral, have been reduced in each instance to a single straight line; thus all the most important characteristics of the coal or mineral are represented in a form more advantageous than that in which such data usually are shown. To obtain consistent results, float-and-sink data must be based on a single definite narrow size range, which may be designated "a coal unit." It will be shown that such units, each embodying a different size range, can be grouped to form what may be termed "a composite coal." A three-dimensional presentation will emerge, which will closely identify the coal, illustrate its characteristics in a new manner and explain many obscure facts. FLOAT-AND-SINK TESTS For the preliminary study of any cleaning or concentration problem, or in the control of any operation, float-and-sink tests must be made. The results of these tests are grouped in tabular form and then illustrated in various systems of curves; but if such a graphic representation is to have the utmost practical value, it must offer at least the following advantages: (I) It must be easier to read than the tabular results, and (2) it must be easy to plot, check and interpolate. The first requirement will be attained by reducing the number of curves to a minimum, and the second by some system of representation that will use only straight lines. Of the many washing curves now in use, only the "recovery curve," often known as the "composite curve "-a somewhat misleading term-will be considered. Any point on the recovery curve will show what percentage of weight of clean coal can be recovered when the mineral is washed at a certain specific gravity. As an example, the tests listed below Fig. I are illustrated in the drawing by a curve obtained by plotting (I) as abscissas the ash content of the coal recovered and (2) as ordinates the corresponding percentage of refuse discarded; but, in general practice, instead of writing down that weight, it is customary to set down its complement, which is the corresponding weight of coal recovered. From this curve can be deduced the information necessary for the solution of most practical problems. NEW FORM OF GRAPHIC PRESENTATION The resemblance of the recovery curve in Fig. I, or, for that matter, the recovery curve obtained in common practice, to a power curve is apparent. The general equation of such a curve is y = axn where n is negative. Taking logarithms: log y = a + n log x. Using a logarithmic scale, the equation of the recovery curve will be Y = A + bX. IN processing magnetic taconites several steps of crushing, grinding, classification, and magnetic separation are required to produce a 60+ pct Fe concentrate. Usually the final concentrate is in a slurry form of 55 to 70 pct solids by weight and is further characterized by a particle size of 60+ pct -325 mesh. In taconite plants already completed or under construction the conventional method used to obtain pellets suitable for blast furnaces is to filter the concentrate slurry, ball the filter cake, and then harden the green pellets in a traveling grate or in a vertical shaft furnace. Large tonnages must be handled in minimum floor space, with reduced maintenance and lowest possible operating cost. Filtration must therefore achieve two objectives: 1) high filtration rate-in terms of pounds of dry solids per hour per square foot of filtration area-at a low filtrate solids concentration, and 2) a filter cake moisture that will always permit efficient balling within the normal fluctuations of plant operating conditions. If moisture contents are too high, balling may be impossible or result in a mushy ball without enough green strength for the firing operation.

Very small anomalies in oil well temperatures are detected and measured by recording the difference in temperature existing between two thermally sensitive elements which are Spaced several feet apart on a small diameter carrier and lowered into the bore hole. The elements operate in a balanced electrical circuit, sending only a reference signal to the surface as long as normal gradient temperatures are encountered. When either element enters a temperature disturbance, the circuit is unbalanced and produces large recorder deflections for minute anomalies. The system is highly sensitive to small changes in thermal gradients caused by gas or fluid movements and to the boundaries between beds of different thermal conductivities. Typical logs show successful applications of the process to locating gas and water leaks in casing, gas entry. and gas-oil contact. INTRODUCTION Temperature measurements in oil wells have been made for many years in the search for additional sub-surface data. It has been generally agreed that many conditions in the bore hole cause temperature anomalies which, if located and measured, could yield useful information. But it has been recognized also that many of the irregularities, such as those produced by small water and gas leaks in casing, might be very small and therefore difficult to detect with certainty.' Although tem-perature measurements have been made which show anomalies of less than one degree deviation from normal gradient temperatures, the results are usually uncertain and unconvincing. The general practice, therefore. has been to apply temperature surveys only to well conditions known to produce appreciable disturbances, such as large gas movements and cement hydration. The recent demand for additional data has focused attention on the problem of making dependable temperature measurements in the many instances when anomalies are small but none the less significant. It was for the purpose of detecting these minute irregularities in bore hole temperature that the program described in the following text was undertaken. It is emphasized that this presentation is not offered as a complete study, for the process is still partially experimental. But it is believed that the results obtained thus far will be of interest to the industry and will indicate some of the system's potential usefulness. DIFFERENTIAL MEASUREMENT The chief value of differential measurement lies in the fact that a difference between two factors can be measured with a scale of values best suited to that difference, a scale that might be cumbersome or impractical if applied to the factors themselves. When it is known that all factors will be nearly equal in value, and therefore the differences consistently small, it is possible to select a scale which will permit very accurate measurement of the differences. This advantage is in contrast to the difficulty of measuring small increments of a single variable, where the increment must be measured by a large scale which is suitable for measuring the entire factor. Gradient temperatures are usually measured under this latter condition where temperature measuring apparatus must have a scale extending over the range of expected temperatures, say 50' to 25O°F, and it becomes almost impossible to detect small irregularities of less than one degree. The use of large strip chart recorders and divided multiple ranges tend to amplify the small anomaly and make it more pronounced. But the instability of instruments, both

Described herein are the results obtained during research work involving coating titanium alloys with molybdenum by vapor-deposition methods. Results show that the method can be used successfully to deposit hard adherent wear-resistant coating of methodmetallic molybdenum on titanium or titanium alloys without changing the microstructure of the titanium base. PRODUCTION and use of titanium and its alloys have increased tremendously in the past few years. The physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of this engineering metal have caused considerable enthusiasm among metallurgists and engineers. However, as with all materials, there are some drawbacks. For example, titanium is susceptible to seizing and galling on wearing surfaces. In order to produce a good wear-resistant surface, many investigations have been conducted evaluating oxidizing, carburizing, nitriding, carbonitriding, sili-conizing, and chromizing of titanium. All of these processes require high temperatures for rather extensive periods of time. It has been possible to produce hard surfaces on titanium and its alloys by a number of these processes at the expense of a deterioration of the physical properties of the base material. A practical solution to the problem of providing titanium and titanium alloy parts with a satisfactory wear-resistant nongalling surface must be one that does not involve excessive temperatures for long periods of time. Sam Tour & Co. Inc. has completed a research and development contract for the United States Army Ordnance Corps on vapor deposition of molybdenum on titanium and titanium alloys. On the basis of results obtained from the research program, titanium alloys can be coated successfully with molybdenum to provide a hard wear-resistant surface without harm to their base mechanical properties. The remainder of this article is a description of the techniques used to apply the coating and the results obtained from wear tests on molybdenum-coated titanium. Theory Basically, the technique used was the application of molybdenum by a vapor-deposition method, thermal decomposition of molybdenum hexacarbonyl [Mo(CO)] with hydrogen as the carrier gas. The selection of this method was based chiefly on the following considerations: 1—low plating temperature which would minimize excessive grain growth, 2— low decomposition temperature of the carbonyl, 3— possibilities of controlling the hardness of the plate by adjusting the carbon content using the plating temperature and pressure as the primary variables, 4—use of high vacuum, thereby avoiding unnecessary oxidation and other complex reactions with the atmosphere. Free energy data1 show the strong tendency for titanium to combine with O2 N2 or carbon from normal temperatures to temperatures above its melting point. To maintain the titanium in a film free condition, the use of as high a vacuum as possible is indicated. The literature' indicates that the reaction product of hydrogen with titanium is unstable in vacuum at around 400°C. 5—Although it is indicated from the thermodynamic standpoint that there is little possibility of removing carbon from either titanium or molybdenum, the work of Lander and Germer -ndicates that the use of a suitable H,/CO ratio is somewhat effective in minimizing carbon deposition. 6—Availability of molybdenum carbonyl. In the simplest form, the conditions of equilibrium3 in chemical reactions involving decomposition of carbonyl are as follows: Mo (CO) ? Mo + 6CO 2CO * C + CO,. The plating rate is proportional to the rate of evolution of CO from the decomposed carbonyl, i.e., it is proportional to the pressure of the gaseous decomposition products. The benefits derived from an acidizing treatment are a function of the penetration achieved by the acid before complete spending. Additional penetration may be achieved by (1) controlling acid leak-08 into formation pores in the channel faces, and (2) retarding the reaction rate of the acid. A recently developed chemical additive consists of a synthetic polymeric material which absorbs hydrochloric-acid solutions, when suspended therein, swelling up to 40 times its original volume. These swollen particles have the ability to deform and seal-08 formation pores, providing fluid-loss control. In addition, they provide a diffusion barrier between the fracture face and the acid solution, prolonging the spending time of the acid. Field applications of this new technique have shown promising results. A method of conducting acid fluid-loss tests, using carbonate cores, is believed to provide fluid-loss data that are more representative of formation conditions than the conventional filter-paper determinations. INTRODUCTION The concept of oilwell acidizing has changed since its first commercial application, 30 years ago. Originally, it was visualized that the acid penetrated thousands of tiny pores and flow channels in the matrix rock, enlarging them by dissolving the carbonate walls. The resultant permeability increase was assumed to be the responsible factor in increasing production from the well. Recent laboratory studies,' however, have shown that this does not provide the complete picture. Although this type of individual pore penetration by the acid does take place during acid "soaks", designed to overcome "skin effect" due to mud invasion in the immediate vicinity of the wellbore, many years of experience have shown that considerable pressure is required to attain any appreciable injection rate into the fine capillary pores of the rock. During most acidizing treatments, the bottom-hole pressure build-up due to the restriction of flow into the formation exceeds the "breakdown" pressure of the rock so that a fracture is induced. In most cases, such fractures open up along natural, incipient fissures and zones of weakness in the rock and, therefore, tend to follow the natural stress pattern of the rock—whether it be horizontal, vertical or inclined. Because of the comparatively greater permeability of the channel in relation to that of the matrix, the bulk of the acid volume is diverted into the newly opened fracture. Here it quickly penetrates the formation, opening and ex- tending the fracture in much the same manner as a conventional fracturing fluid. Unlike the fracturing fluid, however, most acidizing solutions contain no propping agent; thus, the open fracture will again close when the injection pressure is relieved. Laboratory studies2 have shown that in many cases the etching of the fracture faces, resulting from the reaction between the acidizing solution and the carbonate rock, is nonuniform due to the heterogeneity of the rock structure. As a result, the two fracture faces no longer match when pressure is released, and support pillars and intermediate voids remain, forming a high-conductivity channel for well fluids. Unfortunately, this is not true over the entire area of the fracture, but only over that portion of the fracture where the rock has been partially dissolved by the acid. The acid solution spends as its travels away from the wellbore; once it has completely spent, even though it may provide additional mechanical fracture extension, no additional benefit due to etching of fracture faces can be expected. Studies of acid reaction rates under formation conditions,3 observing the effect of different variables upon spending time, have shown that the reaction was often so rapid that very little penetration of the formation occurred before the acid was spent. Study was undertaken to devise methods of increasing the penetration of the acid before spending, so as to provide greater benefit from the acidizing treatment by etching a greater portion of the fracture faces. Several techniques were devised to accomplish this purpose. First, chemical additives were developed which were designed to retard the reaction rate of the acid, causing it to penetrate a greater distance from the wellbore before finally becoming spent. Another method was to increase the injection rate of the acid. However, it was found that the resultant increased shear tended to accelerate the reaction rate of the acid, partially offsetting the benefits of the higher injection rate insofar as achieving increased penetration before spending was concerned.' Another approach to the problem of achieving increased penetration was the development of fluid-loss additives for acid solutions, which would minimize the volume of acid lost into formation pores in the fracture faces and provide maximum fracture extension for the volume of acid injected during the treatment. The use of fluid-loss additives is now considered the most effective method of providing maximum fracturing-fluid efficiency.~ Unfortunately, this latter technique does not solve the problem of rapid reaction rate, with consequent limitation of the fracture area benefited by reaction with unspent acid. The writer is especially interested in the paper, as he conceived the arrangement of the Akin and Godwin plants and was in charge of the design work and the engineering incident to their construction. The Akin and other phosphate deposits in the Tennessee phosphate area lie on beds of limestone that are very irregular. The limestone beds, after the phosphate matrix has been removed, are similar in appearance to land severely eroded by the action of water and denuded of top soil. Depressions in the limestone, called cutters, are irregular in depth with vertical or overhanging walls, having the general appearance of cracks in dried clay. They change abruptly in direction, width, and depth, and vary on the Akin tract from 1 to 25 ft in depth and from 1 to 50 ft in width. Pinnacles of limestone commonly occur in the cutters which appear, when exposed, like small clifflike islands in a river. Limestone floats also occur. The phosphate matrix fills the cutters and covers the uncuttered areas, the thickness of the cover varying continually and sometimes rather abruptly. It occurs generally as stratifications of phosphate rock and clay of varying thickness. The phosphate rock in the matrix varies in hardness and in percents of silica, lime, iron oxides, and fluorine, and the clay varies in toughness. The matrix is mined with a dragline that drops it into a hopper with a grid composed of 9-in. parallel bar spacings located above the hammer mill. The matrix on, and passing through the grid, is subject to the action of powerful sprays which wash it down to the hammer mill, together with any limestone lumps that are not removed before passing through the grid. The hammer mill reduces the feed to lumps of plate rock and clay, most of which will pass through the 8-in. pump suction. The mixture discharges into a pool containing the pump suction pipe. Water from a hydraulic nozzle moves the mixture to the pump suction intake. The pump, driven by a variable speed motor, is the same size as the pumps mentioned on p. 279. Provision is made to remove any lumps that lodge in a bend in the suction pipe in a manner similar to that used in the Florida phosphate fields. The hammer mill and pump units are mounted on wide steel skids so that they can be moved as the mining operation progresses. The discharge from the pump flows through an abrasion-resistant spiral welded steel pipe 8 1/4 in. actual inside diam, 8 in. nominal diam, for a maximum distance of 2200 ft, which is the limiting pumping distance for one pump. This pipeline, referred to hereafter as pipeline A, discharges into a ball mill without balls, which in turn discharges into a rotary screen attached to it that separates the slurried matrix into 11/4-in. oversize and undersize fractions. The oversize is returned to the mill for further reduction; the undersize is pumped to a Dorrco washer and then flows into a hydroseparator 160 ft in diam. In spite of the size reduction in the hammer mill and the blunging and washing of the slurry in its passage through the pump, pipeline, mill, and washer, the discharge to the hydroseparator frequently contains mud balls almost perfectly spherical. Sometimes the discharge from the 16,000-ft pipeline at Godwin contains mud balls the size of bird shot and smaller. This pipeline will be referred to subsequently as line B. Liquid caustic is added to the slurry at the Akin plant before its passage through the hydro-separator, which decreases the size of particles in the overflow by dispersion. In passing through pumps 1, 2, and 3 and pipeline B, the slime fraction in the underflow is increased by abrasion and blunging and also by continuing dispersive action of the caustic. The matrix for use in the experimental tests referred to on p. 279 was obtained from three small surface openings on the Akin tract that were made previous to the purchase of the tract by the Authority. Matrix used in the 2 and 4-in. experimental pipeline tests was taken from the three openings and proportioned to obtain a sufficient quantity that would be fairly representative of the average in the Akin deposits. Prospecting samples of matrix had been obtained from drill holes which showed no small variation in physical and chemical properties. Some of the physical variation is evident from the size distribution of solids in samples taken during the tests covering line B flows so thoroughly made by the Authority under the direction of Mr. Burt, see Table V, p. 280. Hydraulic gradients for a pipe of 8-in. diam were derived from the 2 and 4-in. pipeline tests using the so-called representative matrix as above described, and plotted on the profile of pipeline B. Gradients of other materials in slurry form passing through pipelines that bore some similiarity to the Akin matrix slurry were also plotted. After a study had been made of the hydraulic gradients plotted on the profile and the varying slurry flow that would probably occur during actual operation, three pumps were ordered, referred to as No. 1, 2, and 3 on p. 279. No. 1 and 2 pumps were installed and the third kept in reserve should the operation of 1 and 2 pumps prove satisfactory, since installation of the third pump would require an attendant, as well as the laying of 5400 ft of pipe to supply it with seal-water from the Akin plant. Subsequently, it was found desirable to install the third pump to maintain capacity when the slime fraction was low and the coarse fractions were large. Reference to Fig. 6 will show that the flow in B line goes upgrade in three locations. At the outlet at Godwin, the slurry flows between two 45" bends for an approximate distance of 18 ft to rise above the ground a sufficient height to discharge into a launder feeding the first classifier. This condition requires extra energy, which is taken care of by keeping the hydraulic gradient a sufficient distance above the high points. Although there are rather heavy upgrades in the line, the choking condition that might occur at the
