These mines were discovered by George W. Lufkin in August, 1878, and mere worked almost continuously until August, 1893, a period of fifteen years. The ore-deposits in this locality lie close to the surface, and it is strange that the Spaniards, passing and repassing for nearly three centuries, did not discover them, particularly as they are marked in several places by large outcrops of black flint and iron, which would lead even a casual observer in a mineral country to suspect the proximity of ore. The mines are situated about six miles from the old Santa Fé trail, and fifteen miles from the Rio Grande. The geology is such that a skilled geologist passing over the ground would probably suspect, from the peculiar arrangement of the formations, the occurrence of ore. The formations in the district, eruptive and sedimentary, are nine in number; and of these eight are to be found within one thousand feet of the Grande workings. Topography. After the phenomenal development of the new mine, the United Eastern Mining Co., with Mr. Frank A. Keith as President, decided to install a reduction plant. The character of the ore, closely resembling the product of other mines in the district, did not offer any particular metallurgical problems, since these neighboring mines had been operating milling plants very successfully for several years. Thus, with the general metallurgical treatment fairly well-defined, the matter of next importance was to design and construct a plant as economically as possible, that would give the best results obtainable. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz in about equal quantities, with some decomposed andesite, while the average value of mill feed was calculated to be $20 or more in gold, no silver being present. The tonnage to be treated at the start was fixed at 200 tons, but, in view of the favorable condition of the mine, it was considered advisable to arrange facilities for increasing the capacity to 400 tons. While it is best in some cases to adopt a distinct independent unit system where future enlargement is contemplated, in this instance the plans worked out differently. Summarized, the treatment adopted consists of coarse crushing, coarse grinding, fine grinding and cyanidation. For coarse crushing the selection of the No. 6 size gyratory crusher was governed not so much by its capacity as by the size of the feed openings to receive the run-of-mine material, which was too coarse for a No. 5 crusher. TO accomplish the coarse grinding to best advantage, a careful comparison was made between the modern steel ball-mill—the last word in crushing and grinding—and one of its older, and, at that time better-established, competitors, the rolls. The following conclusion was reached: While it is possible that for the sized plant under consideration the cost of operating rolls might be a little cheaper, it is preferable to use ball-mills because a simpler arrangement is possible, and because the handling of ball-mills is preferred by the operator. A marked departure was introduced for fine grinding. Instead of the long type of tube-mill, using pebbles, a mill of similar design was selected, but of much shorter length, using small cast-steel balls as grinding medium. Granules are used primarily as roofing material. From the earliest times, man has been faced with the basic problem of providing protection for himself, his family, and his property against the ravages of the weather. Basically, this problem is no different today than in the past, except that today the trend is to demand shelter which is also colorful and distinctive. There has been a gradual evolution from the thatched roof to the modem ranchstyle home. In his search for a more permanent and more attractive roof, the home owner has utilized many mineral materials. All granules, whether slate or colored granules, are referred to by the asphalt roofing industry as "Slate Granules." Early Roofing Materials The development of mineral roofing in the United States followed two trends: first, the slate industry, and second, the bituminous products. The early colonists were familiar with slab slate construction from Europe and it was natural for them to continue with this type of roofing. As early as 1780, the forerunners of the present bituminous products were finding favor. Those early products consisted of saturating burlap or similar material with crude tar or pitch. This type of roofing was soon improved by dusting a variety of materials on the surface of the roofing to prevent adhesion while in rolls. Such factors as fire resistance and protection from the actinic rays of the sun soon followed. This started the general pattern which is still followed today, that is, saturating felt materials and supplying a uniform grade of crushed mineral to the surface. In commercial and public buildings, metal roofs found early favor. The attractive green color of verdigris-coated copper became a symbol of churches and institutions of learning. Aluminum roofing has become economical for large structures and is finding limited popularity in rural areas. Tile, asbestos, and cement materials, being weather resistant, found early acclaim and are still popular. Today, by far the most widely used roofing materials in the United States are asphalt products. Two important characteristics-economy and weatherability-account for their popularity. Influence of Building Trends on Roofing The postwar building boom in 1947 had many attractive features for the American people. The ranch-style one story type of home seemed well suited for suburban developments which sprang up in such profusion. As the roof in modern home construction is one of the most conspicuous aspects of its architecture, the home owner could now express his tastes not only in paint and landscaping, but could also select an attractive and harmonious roof color. Variety of Minerals Used Many naturally occurring minerals are used today in the roofing industry. At Weed Heights, Nev., precipitation plays a major role in the plant operation. Almost two-thirds of the present copper production is leach-precipitation plant copper. The entire plant complex processes about 135,000 tons of low grade copper ore per week. Of this tonnage, 49,000 tons of about 0.78% sulfide ore are treated in the concentrator. This is handled in the conventional manner of crushing, grinding, and concentration of the copper sulfide by flotation.

It has been necessary to collate the available data on the solubility of graphite in Fe-Si-Mn alloys for a study of slag-metal equilibria in ferromanganese production. Flow of slightly compressible fluids through porous media can be described by linear equations. Many mathematical solutions- are available for the boundary conditions of constant terminal pressures or constant flow rates, or a combination of both. Various techniques of formation evaluation use drastic rate changes, such as sudden shut-in. Other methods require that the well be produced at a constant rate. In practice, one is not always able m fulfill these rigid requtirements. This report shows a methor1 by which varying-rate data can be converted to a constant-rate pressure response, called the unit response function. After obtaining the unit response function, one may analyze it, using techniques described in the literature. The method uses tile principle of superposition. Necessary data is a time history of pressure and production. If pressure changes and/or rate changes are very drastic, the unit response function becomes erratic and oscillates The erratic and oscillating results are obvious, and under those circumstances, no answer can he obtained. It appears, however, that a response function without oscilla-tion will not contain any appreciable errors —- one gets either good results or no results. This report includes a mumber of examples of converting constant-rate data to constant terminal-pressure data and vice versa. In addition, a number of field-test applications are given. This method should be useful in converting mathematical solutions from one boundary condition to another. It already has proven useful in converting varying-rate data to constant-rate conditions. INTRODUCTION Pressure drawdown tests are performed on production wells to determine various reservoir characteristics, including permeability, distances to discontinuities, reservoir continuity and wellbore conditions. An ideal drawdown test is performed at a constant production rate with pressure observation during the drawdown period. A typical drawdown curve for a constant rate of production is shown in Fig. 1. In practice, a constant production rate cannot always be maintained. Fig. 2 shows a pressure drawdown curve for a varying rate. Usual methods of analysis are not applicable to tests such as this. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the varying-rate data somehow, before usual analytical techniques can be applied. This report describes a method of obtaining a response function. A response function can be defined as the relationship between pressure and time for a well producing at a constant unit rate. Such a response function can be analyzed by the usual analytical techniques. Hutchinson and Sikora' first approximated a resistance function (response function), and by applying the superposition principle, pressures were calculated using the varying rates. If no match was obtained, adjustments were made to the response function and the closer approximation was used again in an attempt to match calculated and observed pressure behavior. If a good match was obtained: the response function was then used to extrapolate the future aquifer behavior.

The stabilization of the R, a-Mn, and 0-Mn phases have been studied in the Mn-Ti-Fe and Mn-Ti-Co systems. Iron and cobalt both appear to stabilize the (Mn-Ti) R phase to almost the sarne extent. The R-phase region was found to extend from the lowest e/a to slightly beyond the maximunz e/a limit known for this phase. But, while iron appears to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt tends to stabilize the p-Mn phase. In the two systems manganese appears to get replaced by iron and cobalt in each of the mentioned phases. The instability of the a-Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Co system and the /3 -Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Fe system cannot be explained on the basis of adverse size effects because atomic diameters for both iron and cobalt (C.N. 12 at. diam) are ziery similnr and not much different from manganese which they replace. Qualitatively, the reason for the stability of the a-Mn and the p-Mn phases can be traced to the more favorable e/a ratio prevailing in the respective systems and to a competing tendency between the two phases. In transition metal alloy systems the o, p,P, R, a- Mn,' and p-Mn2 phases have been claimed as electron compounds. A large volume of work has been done to establish the criterion for the formation of the o phase but until very recently practically no systematic work was done on the a-Mn and the /3-Mn phases. A recent investigation on the P-Mn phase3 indicates the e/a criterion for p-Mn phase stabilization. Since the R phase was first known to appear only in certain ternary systems1 no detailed work was then possible for this phase. The R phase has been recently discovered as a binary intermetallic compound in the Mn-Ti~ and Mn-si~-' binary systems. The existence of binary R phases opens up the possibilities of studying the effect of alloying elements on the stabilization of the R phase. Of the two binary systems possessing an R phase, the Mn-Ti system appears to be more interesting because at a suitable high temperature it is possible to find the three electron compounds, the a-Mn, p-Mn, and R phases, side by side and it is possible to study the effect of a third transition element on these three electron compounds. For the present investigation iron and cobalt, so called B elements for the formation of electron compounds, have been used as the third element to study the stabilization of the a-Mn, P-Mn, and R phases. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by using 99.9 pct pure electrolytic Fe and Mn, 99.5 pct Co, and crystal bar titanium, supplied by Semi Elements Inc., New York and Gallard Schelsinger Mfg. Co., New York. Weighed amounts of the components were melted in recrystal-lized alumina crucibles in an inert atmosphere (argon) high-frequency induction melting unit. Titanium was made into fine chips for easy dissolution and a special charging procedure was adopted to avoid contacts of titanium chips with the alumina crucibles. Up to 20 at. pct Ti, the maximum titanium content in the investigated alloys, there was no visible sign of reaction of titanium with the alumina crucibles. With a careful control of melting time and temperature the losses were minimized and were always found to be below 0.1 pct. Because of such small and almost constant weight losses, the alloys were not finally analyzed. The alloys were wrapped in molybdenum foil and annealed in evacuated and sealed silica capsules at 1000" * 2°C for 72 hr and subsequently quenched in cold tap water. Annealed samples were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. For all high manganese alloys oxalic acid solutions of various concentrations and 1.0 pct HN03 solution were found suitable as etching reagents. Best contrast between the a-Mn and the R phases could be obtained by using freshly prepared 60 pct glycerine + 20 pct HN03 + 20 pct HF solution. For high iron and cobalt containing alloys, especially for alloys containing the a-Fe, y-Fe, and P-Co phases, 15 cc HNOJ + 60 cc HC1 + 15 cc acetic acid + 15 cc water solution was found to be the best etching reagent. All X-ray diffraction work was carried out (using specimens prepared from annealed powders) with a 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera using unfiltered FeK radiation at 25 kv and 10 ma. All calculations for X-ray diffraction work were carried out using an IBM 7044 digital computer RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The two ternary systems, MnTiFe and MnTiCo, were investigated near the manganese rich end, Figs. 1 and 2, and show some common features. In both alloy systems large extensions of narrow R phase regions occur at almost constant titanium contents. At titanium contents higher than that of the single phase R-phase alloys, the same unidentified X phase was found in both ternary systems. The extensions of the X phase close to the Mn-Ti binary indicate that this phase could be the TiMns phase. Too few X phase diffraction lines were present in the diffraction patterns to make positive identification of the X phase. In contrast to this similarity the two systems show opposite behavior in the extensions of the a-Mn and 8-Mn phase regions; while iron tends to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt

Armstrong, Secretary of the Columbia Section of the Institute, we have received information as to the activities and plan of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, which was recently organized under the joint auspices of the local sections of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and our own Institute. The first meeting was held on September 20, at which a program for the following year was adopted. The, meeting was then conducted by the Civil Engineers., the principal business being the reading of a report by Mr. Flinn, Secretary of the United Engineering Society. The second meeting was held on October 18, of which the Columbia, Section of our Institute took charge. According to the program adopted, meetings will be held regularly on the third Friday of each month, except June, July and August. It is understood that these meetings shall not interfere with nor abridge the independent activity of the participating societies. The proposed work of the Association is to be conducted by a large number of committees, whose attention will be devoted to such subjects as the following: Municipal, Highways, Resources, Manufacture and Industries, Legislative, Educational, National and State, Patents and Inventions, Americanization, Safety and Rehabilitation, Research, Emergency. When all of these committees shall have been filled, and their work begun, it is expected that the engineers of Spokane and vicinity may take a more active part in things affecting human welfare in that vicinity.

THE Butler Mine property is situated in the vicinity of Pittston, in the Wyoming coal-field of Pennsylvania. The coal has been worked out from the fourteen-foot or Baltimore vein for a number of years on part of the tract, the old chambers remaining open as when originally abandoned. This vein outcrops on the Butler property, and is nowhere more than sixty feet below the surface of the ground on the line of the cut-off to be described. Above the fourteen-foot vein and about, say midway, between it and the surface of the ground, there is another small vein or rider of coal, about twelve inches in thickness. The rock between the two veins is a carbonaceous slate, about twenty-five feet in thickness. Above the smaller vein is a bed of sandstone, varying in thickness, but generally not less than from eight to ten feet. This sandstone is also carbonaceous, but the proportion of carbon is much less than in the slate below. Both rocks have been analyzed, and before the next Institute meeting, the writer hopes to be able to furnish the exact proportions. The sandstone is overlaid with debris up to the surface of the ground. Some time during the spring of 1876, it was found that the coal left in the worked-out mine had been set on fire, and that the fire was gradually spreading. Inquiry developed the fact that the fire had originally been started by a woman, who had taken up her abode in an old tunnel leading into the workings. Owing to some delay in the early attempts made to extinguish the fire, it finally gained such headway that no ordinary means were found to be effectual. Finally, Mr. C. F. Conrad, civil and mining engineer, of Pittston, Penna., was called in as consulting engineer. He advised the making of a thorough cut through such portion of the old workings as had not been reached by the fire. It was found by survey that this cut could be limited to a length of about one thousand two hundred feet, as the vein faulted on both sides, and that the greatest depth of the cut would be about sixty feet. Subsequently it was decided to tunnel part of the way, thus saving the deepest portion of the cut. In 1856-7, there occurred a fire in the same mine. Two stone-walls in V-shape running from the apex of the V towards the outcrop, were built to cut the fire off, and these walls were carried as far as the vein had at that time been worked. TheRe is still considerable controversy as to the exact nature of the mechanism of the age-hardening process, in spite of the many experiments already performed. For this reason, a considerable number of typical systems should be examined in detail and their results correlated. Furthermore, the methods of studying the changes that take place during the progress of this phenomenon should be carefully scrutinized and the different methods applied to the same samples, preferably at the same time. The experiments described in this paper are presented to supply information on one age-hardening system and to show how the various methods of investigation compare in their indication of what has happened. In brief, the progress of aging in magnesium alloys containing about 10 per cent by weight of aluminum at different temperatures was followed by measurements of hardness, electrical resistivity, dilation and lattice parameter, and by microscopic observation. Previous Work Meissnerl,$ Archer?, and Gann3 have investigated the changes in mechanical properties of magnesium-aluminum alloys during aging and have shown the optimum condition for the age-hardening treatment. Meissner's results are particularly interesting because when replotted so that they represent hardness as a function of aging time, the curves of 125" and 150" C. show two hardness peaks. INTRODUCTION THE deposition of metalliferous lode systems takes place at considerable depths and no one may observe the process. We see only the end results of the process and from these we seek to construct a theory that will account for them. Because there is an obvious relation between many lode systems and intrusive igneous masses, it is a natural inference that they have formed by fluids that were expelled from such masses. The metalliferous lode systems have been deposited by ascending thermal fluids that have risen mainly from great irregular bodies of intruding magmas which are called batholiths. Probably 95 per cent of such lode systems have formed in connection with acidic or "granitic" batholiths and probably less than 5 per cent have formed in connection with basic intrusives. The study of lode ores, therefore, should include the study of the intrusion and differentiation of the batholith. It was noted long ago1 that certain tin-bearing deposits are commonly associated with small stocks. That small stocks are cupolas of larger intrusive masses has generally been recognized. Butler,2 in his studies of the ore deposits of Utah, showed that the chief deposits in Utah are in and near the stocks; that is near the "apically truncated

IN 1945 the Bagdad Copper Corp. decided to change from block caving to open-pit mining. By early 1948 the conversion was completed and production was increased from 1500 tons per day to 4000 tons per day. Open-pit mining costs decreased approximately 40 pet from the cost of producing ore by the underground method. At present one P & H model 1400 all-electric 4 1/2-yd shovel and one P & H model 1055 Diesel 3-yd shovel are used continuously for stripping. One 21/2yd North- west shovel handles the ore. Delivery of a new P & H 1055 electric shovel for stripping is expected this month. Blasthole drilling is performed with two Bucyrus model 22 and two Bucyrus model 27 churn drills.

In a previous paper upon the enrichment of mineral veins by later metallic sulphides,? the writer has shown that certain masses of rich ores, such as are found in many mines, either near the water-line or as bonanzas in depth, are of secondary origin, and are due to a leaching of lean ore and the concentration of the material by reaction between the solution and the unaltered ore below. The geological and mineralogical evidence is believed to form an adequate basis for a chemical and physical explanation of the phenomenon. In the present paper the writer will give a brief synopsis of this theory, and will apply it more particularly to deposits of the precious metals, laying special emphasis upon the dependence of such enrichments upon the presence of iron sulphide (as pyrite, etc.) in the primary ore, and upon structural features which control the circulation of the enriching solutions below the water-level. It is believed that many, though not all, of the bonanzas arid pay-shoots of rich sulphide ores, especially those carrying gold and silver, which are encountered in ore-deposits, are of such secondary origin. Apparently it is essential that the occurrence and structural relations of such ore-masses should be understood, as the success of the mine is often dependent upon the finding and extraction of these ores. A legitimate deduction, too, is that such ore-deposits decrease in value With depth. As my own studies have been mainly in Montana, my illustrations must be drawn from the ore-deposits of this and adjacent States, with such as I have noted in hurried visits else-

Transverse dispersion has received considerably less treatment in the literature than has longitudinal dispersion. Different methods for determining transverse dispersion coefficients have been used in different investigations, and the results obtained have not been consistent enough to permit accurate generalizations as to the effect of various physical parameters on the magnitude of these coefficients. A numerical solution to the differential equation describing transverse dispersion in the absence of longitudinal dispersion was obtained to enable one to calculate the dispersion coefficient from experimental results. The more general dispersion equation including longitudinal dispersion also was solved numerically to give quantitative limits of a dimensionless group within which the assumption of negligible longitudinal dispersion is justified. Possible experimental procedures were examined, and one utilizing a cylindrical packed column was chosen for the determination of transverse dispersion coefficients. Values of these coefficients were determined for a system of two miscible organic fluids of equal density and viscosity, for two sizes of packing material over a wide range of flow rates in the laminar regime. The dispersion coefficient was found to decrease, for a constant value of the product of packing size and interstitial velocity, as the size of the packing material particles increased. INTRODUCTION Longitudinal dispersion has received extensive treatment in the literature, and consequently is better understood than its orthogonal counterpart, transverse dispersion. Many mathematical models of dispersion processes assume that transverse dispersion is rapid enough to damp out any radial** concentration gradients and therefore may be neglected. Laboratory and production results, however, indicate that this is a poor assumption.l,2 Various experimental procedures for determining transverse dispersion coefficients have been used in previous investigations, but the results have generally been expressed by similar correlations. The transverse dispersion coefficients obtained, however, have often varied considerably for given values of the correlation parameters. We feel that further experimental determinations of transverse dispersion coefficients will help alleviate some of the inconsistencies in these empirical correlations. One assumption implicit in all previous investigations is that of negligible longitudinal dispersion in the experimental system. An attempt to justify this assumption often is made using intuitive reasoning, but it is apparent that this reasoning must break down as the condition of zero flow rate is approached. A mathematical examination of the equations describing the system yields physical limits outside of which the assumption of negligible longitudinal dispersion is invalid. BACKGROUND In a porous medium, the "effective molecular diffusivity" De is less than the molecular diffusivity D measured in the absence of a porous medium, due to the tortuous path which a diffusing molecule must travel. Various authors3-5 have reported values of the ratio De/D in the range of 0.6 to 0.7. When there is fluid flow within the porous medium, mass transfer occurs by convective dispersion as well as by molecular diffusion. These are separate phenomena and can be treated as such on a microscopic scale. However, the mathematical complexity is such that only extremely simple geometries could be considered, and the results hardly would be applicable to the complex geometries existent in actual porous media. ALL of the prospects that later became mines in the Ducktown district were discovered prior to 1854, and most of them were exploited before the turn of the century. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the exploration and current development of the Boyd mine, discovered in 1853. It is in the heart of the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee, and is being developed by the Tennessee Copper Co. GEOLOGY The geology of the district has been fully described in many papers. Probably the most complete description is that of Emmons and Laney.I The rocks of the district are considered to be of Lower Cambrian age and are a part of the Great Smoky formation, consisting mainly of interbedded graywacke and mica schist, in which the ore deposits occur. The ore bodies are included in an area of about 6 sq. miles, 2 miles wide and 3 miles long striking N. 45° E., and may be grouped into three general lode systems. The northeast system, including the East Tennessee, London and Burra Burra ore bodies, and the southeast group, comprising the Polk County, Mary and Calloway deposits, are all characterized by relatively high copper values. The ores of the central system, which includes the Eureka, Boyd, Old Tennessee and Cherokee ore bodies, are low in copper and high in total sulphide content. Boyd mine lies roughly halfway between the Old Tennessee and Eureka ore bodies [ ] and 2500 ft. in the hanging wall of the Burra Burra mine (Fig. 1). A study of spatial relations between uranium and other metal deposits and hydro thermally altered rocks in western Colorado demonstrated districtwide and regional zoning. The pattern was later found repeated elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere Cordillera. District mineralization centers are pipelike bodies of pervasively altered rock from which intensity-temperature-pressure gradients decreased outwardly. Uranium occurs in several zonal environments but usually is economic only in outermost zones. The general similarity of zones throughout the tectoni-cally and metallogenically uniform Cordillera may reflect a consistent hydrothermal process involving zoning. By determining positions of zones it should be possible to select for examination the most favorable small portions of districts or provinces. Mineralogical zoning has been discussed by Lindgren,l3 Graton,lo Emmons,' Blanchard,' Park and many others. It is commonly found to some extent in most mineralized areas. The existence of nonmetallic alteration envelopes around lode metal deposits and their relation to metallization were first emphasized by Lovering,l4 Burbank, Sales and Meyer," Sales,2o McKinstry,I7 Lovering and others15 and Schmitt. Also, large areas of nonmetallic alteration containing porphyry-type replacement metal disseminations have long been recognized and are described by Schwartz,25-28 Kerr and others" and Gilully. In some districts, e. g., Bingham Canyon, Utah, and Santa Rita, N.M., base metal lode deposits and their alteration envelopes are zoned around large altered areas which contain porphyry copper replacement disseminations; however, the spatial and genetic relations between lodes and replacement disseminations and their associated alterations do not seem to have received sufficient attention. Bodies of altered rock containing porphyry-type replacement disseminations are many times larger than the alteration envelopes containing lode deposits. The two types are rarely superimposed. They occur adjacent to or independent of one another, but they are believed to be related through the mechanism of zoning as suggested by Gabelman and Boyer. 5'6 Most of the significant lode metal deposits are distributed around central pipelike bodies of strong, pervasive, nonmetallic alteration which may or may

Danville, the county seat of Montour county, Pa., was one of the earliest and best-known centers of the iron intlustry in the State. It is situated on the north bank of the north branch of the Sosquehanna river, twelve miles east of the confluence of the north and west branches of that river at Northurnberlttnd. The ore-belt, extending for a distance of twelve miles along the north bank, has been developed in a number of places, but nowhere so extensively as in the immediate vicinity of Danville. Hence, a description of the mines in that locality will suffice, as typical of the workings of the entire section. Geology. The Montour ridge consists of an anticlinal fold extending from the source of Wapwollopen creek on the east to the west branch of the Susquehanna, which it reaches at the mouth of Chilisquaque creek. According to the reports of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, the length of the ridge is nearly twenty-seven miles, with an average breadth of three-fourths of a mile, and a maximum elevation of six hundred feet in the vicinity of Danville, where it also attains its greatest width. Just north of Danville the Mahoning creek cuts through it, exposing the iron-ore on the hill-side, where advantage has been taken of this to work the beds on the southern slope of the ridge by means of drifts. The sections given in Fig. 1 are taken from the reports of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, made in 1858, by H. D Rogers, whose description of the Moatour ridge was so complete and accurate that the entire report was reprinted as an appendix to Vol. G 7 of the Second Geological Survey.
