The laboratory development and field use of oil well cement compositions* with high resistance to drilling mud contamination are described. Resistance is obtained by adding a I-lb mixture composed of three parts paraformaldehyde to two parts sodium chromate tetra-hydrate for each sack of cement. This mixture neutralizes the cement-retarding properties of quebracho and other tannins, starch, sodium carboxymethylcellu-lose, Ignite, and monovalent salts of lignosulfonic acid. The retarding properties of calcium lignosulfonate are unaffected. The decontaminating mixture may be used in common cement (designated Type I by ASTM specifica-tions,' Class A by API Std. 10A2) or in a slow set slurry prepared from common cement by addition of calcium lignosulfonate. No changes in slurry viscosities or thickening times are caused by the protecting reagents. The method has been used in 185 field jobs where an improved success ratio has been obtained in plug setting. INTRODUCTION Field experience and laboratory investigations have established contamination by drilling mud as a major factor in oil well cement failures. During 1955, 12 attempts were required to set six open-hole cement plugs in the Timbalier Bay field, La. Eighteen to 30 hours elapsed between placing and testing the plugs in preparation for sidetracking operations. Considerations of rig time expense required immediate resetting where soft cement was drilled after a reasonable waiting period. Sea water drilling mud was used in each well and daily additions of thinners, usually lignites, had been required. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose had been added regularly to control fluid loss. The 50 per cent plug failures were attributed primarily to contamination by the mud. Similar experiences can be found in other fields along the Texas and Louisiana coasts where drilling muds normally contain large quantities of organic treating materials. Cement contamination was the subject of a survey by the Mid-Continent District Study Committee on Cementing Practices and Testing of Oil-Well Cements of the API.3 Data collected from member laboratories and released in Sept., 1951, reported the effects of a number of drilling mud treating chemicals on cement. The study revealed that many of the additives, notably the organic materials in relatively small quantities, had marked effects on the properties of cements tested. Severe losses in strength and erratic thickening time resulted from small additions of mud treating chemicals such as quebracho, starch, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and lignite. The report included no recommendations of methods for overcoming the problem. One investigation of the contamination problem reported the successful use of activated charcoal in setting cement plugs after conventional slurries had failed.4,5 The investigation indicated that an optimum concentration of 5 per cent activated charcoal was effective in combating contamination from 16.7 volume per cent of treated mud. Laboratory and field muds were included in tests and contained varied quantities of ode or more of the following: quebracho, caustic, starch, lime, and calcium lignosulfonate. The function of the charcoal appears to be physical, removing the organic materials by adsorption. The method may be employed in API Class A or Class D (unretarded slow set) cements. The appearance of the Wilfley table in 1897 marked an epoch in the art of concentration of ores. The table has merited and received an almost unprecedented measure of public approval, lasting through its whole patent life. It has been very little improved in itself, or improved upon by competitors. The new machines bidding for popular favor have been of the Wilfley family, but without ability to do markedly better work than the parent machine, or to do more work except by the use of superimposed decks, the latter having obvious disadvantages. During the past three years there has been developed at Morenci a new type or arrangement of riffles applicable to the Wilfley type of concentrating table which corrects many of the objectionable features or limitations of the older system and obviates most of the difficulties encountered with it, particularly when handling ores having a low ratio of concentration. Restrictions on the use of zinc will be a thing off the past in a few months. Government allocations on the metal are also expected to go by the board. Concurrently, action is also expected in reference to lead allocations. Government stockpile goals for zinc have been reached. The International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers lent support to United Steel Worker demands and at the same time put in their own bid for a 25-cent an hour increase at a meeting held in Denver. While backing the USW, the IUMMSW charged the Steel Workers with membership raiding. Iron and steel companies producing about 92 pct of steel ingots in the United States, showed nearly a 13 pct decline in net profit during 1951, compared with the previous year, despite a 22 pct increase in their combined revenue. Federal income tax rose 61 pct, to more than 012 million. The general problem of the simultaneous movement of water and oil in a connected sand is of considerable practical interest from two points of view. First, there is the situation usually described as "edge-water encroachment." Here the water in the sands contiguous to and flanking the oil sand begins to enter the latter as the oil is removed and the reservoir pressure declines. The physical questions involved concern an understanding of the mechanism of the advance of the water and its control, so as to aid the oil recovery rather than to hinder it. In so far as the entry of the water into the oil sand means at least the partial replacement of the oil from the region of the encroachment by the advancing water, it is quite appropriate to consider this type of situation as one of natural water-flooding. For the present discussion, however, we are primarily interested in the problem of artificial flooding. Here the water is deliberately injected into the oil sand with the intention of displacing the oil and removing it through prearranged output wells. For the practical development of such a procedure rather large areas are included in the flooding program and the injection and output wells are arranged in regular patterns or networks, which are felt to be most favorable for a high oil recovery. Although remarkable success has already been obtained in such flooding programs, especially in the Bradford field of Pennsylvania, essentially by the application of the lessons of practical engineering experience, a more thorough physical analysis of the problem appeared to offer promise of leading to results of some interest and value. Another phase of the problem, which stimulated both the experimental and mathematical analysis, is that it is susceptible in large measure to empirical field tests. It, is in itself but an example and illustration of the general theory of the flow of dead (gas-free) liquids through porous media, in which the authors have been interested for the last several years. In this paper are described various comparative tests made on cracked and straight run gasolines. The results of these tests may be briefly summarized as follows: Samples of 54 to 55° Bé. gravity cracked gasolines, with end point of about 442° F., and with a somewhat larger proportion of the less volatile fractions than conformable to government specifications, were used in a single cylinder variable compression engine under the same conditions as were samples of straight run gasoline of 58 to 59° Bé. gravity, and of which one had a greater proportion of the more volatile fractions than called for in government specifications. The cracked gasolines showed decidedly less tendency to knock, hence could be used at higher compression ratios and thereby developed from 10 to 20 per cent. more power than did the straight run gasolines. These figures may be taken as one measure of the superiority of the cracked gasolines under test with the straight run gasolines. It is not claimed that all cracked gasolines are superior to all straight run gasolines to the extent indicated by the above tests; cracked gasolines vary as do the straight run products. Cross's work and that of others have indicated that certain cracked products may have a much greater superiority over straight run than that determined above. From various sources and by different methods of testing data are being obtained to show the definite and generally quite considerable superiority, as an anti-Cetonating fuel of cracked gasolines over straight run gasolines. It is now becoming generally recognized that by increasing the production of cracked gasoline motor fuel from those heavier petroleum fractions, which otherwise would be used for burning purposes, the petroleum industry is not only working in the interest of the conservation of the world's supply of petroleum, but is at the same time making available to the gasoline-consuming public a product distinctly superior to the straight run gasolines.

The energy of the y-iron grain boundary was determined to be 850 ergs per cm2 at 1105°C. The a/a and the a/y boundaries possess somewhat less energy. The microstructures of several iron alloys are discussed in terms of the interfacial energy relationships. THE dependence of the shape of liquid interfaces upon their energies has been studied for some time.1"3 Recently, Smith' concluded that many of the microstructures observed in metals may be attributed to the energies of the interfaces between the grains and phases. While the energies of liquid surfaces have been measured by numerous different methods: only two attempts have been made to determine experimentally the energy of surfaces involving crystalline solids. Udin, Shaler, and Wulff8 used a procedure introduced by Berggren7 to measure the surface tension of solid copper. It consisted of determining the load required on a thin copper wire so that the surface tension was counteracted, and no net strain resulted. Bailey and Watkins8 sed a different technique and were able to determine both the surface tension of copper and the tension of the copper grain boundary. They measured the contact angle which liquid lead makes against a copper surface. They then calculated the above energies from the surface energy of liquid lead by using the Pb vs. Cu/CuY dihedral angle and the surface groove angle formed during thermal etching. They obtained a value of 1800 dynes per cm for the surface tension of clean copper and approximately 640 dynes per cm for the tension of copper grain boundaries. The former value was somewhat higher than Udin's value of 1500 dynes per cm. This paper includes a determination of the energy of the y-iron grain boundary. In addition, the micro-structural relationships of several other metallic and nonmetallic phases with iron were examined and an attempt was made to interpret the observed structures in terms of interfacial energy relationships. Theoretical Considerations In a three-phase material containing a solid and two liquids, there may be two solid/liquid interfaces, one liquid/liquid interface and one inter- granular interface. Liquid/liquid interfacial energies can be measured directly. Therefore, by determining the energy of such an interface and by measuring the required interfacial angles: the energies of the interfaces involving solids may be obtained.10 They may be shown schematically as in Fig. 1. The above procedure requires the following assumptions: 1—The interfacial energies are, in general, unaffected by boundary orientation, and 2— the shapes of the interfaces are unaltered between annealing and sectioning for microscopic examination. The first assumption is good to a first approximation as shown by Dunn and Lionetti11 except for a few critically orientated boundaries. Two conditions may alter the shape of a boundary upon cooling: 1—Precipitation of dissolved material upon one side of the interface, and 2—a change in volume during the transition from one phase modification to another. The former must be detected by microscopic observation. The latter may become appreciable in systems containing an interface between two liquids which solidify after annealing. While mining silver at Butte in 1882, Marcus Daly is reputed to have told his partners in The Anaconda Silver Mining Co., "It looks rather gloomy. The vein is running into copper." Recently, The Anaconda Co. authorized an $11 million expenditure to be made over the next five years to ensure their "running into copper" at deep levels for many more years. The new development program is designed to permit both deeper and more widespread selective mining in "the richest hill on earth" by means of additional shaft-sinking, reactivating closed mines, and establishing new haulageways and centralized hoisting facilities. Historically a deep level selective mining camp, Butte will now continue its uncommon use of three main types of mining methods at one camp-selective mining, block caving, and open pit mining. It was thought by some people that the construction of the Kelley shaft and the subsequent beginning of block caving operations in 1952-outgrowth of the Greater Butte Project-signaled the end of stope mining of high-grade ores at depth. This feeling became more pronounced when, in 1957, the Berkeley open pit commenced operations. During recent years, the tonnage of ore mined selectively underground has decreased, but the new program will maintain the position of selective underground mining in the overall picture of the Butte operations for many years to come.

To many, however, a more detailed account of the ore and manner of treatment will, perhaps, not be without interest. The extraordinary richness of Silver Islet ores, and the difficulty of obtaining correct assays, induced the company to erect smelting works of its own. Accordingly, ground was broken at Wyandotte, Mich., early in the spring of 1871, and the work was pressed on with indomitable energy by Captain E. B. Ward of Detroit, as president, and Mr. Thomas MacFarlane, the discoverer of Silver Islet, as superintendent of the works, so that by July 1st the works were so far completed that smelting could be commenced. The intention was to work Western ores with those from Lake Superior, since the latter contain but a small amount of lead. Hence the capacity of the works is much larger than is needed for the present yield of the mine. The planned process for treatment was smelt-

THE manganese ore reserves of Lake Superior, because of their location and nature, have recently achieved a marked degree of importance as compared with the world's manganese reserves. To appreciate fully the significance and the adequacy of this reserve, one should understand how such ores are used, where obtainable, the quantity used, possible avenues for increasing use or application, and the chemical and physical characteristics of the available ores. Only with that data at hand, is it possible to arrive at a convincing answer to the question whether the reserves of manganiferous iron ores are adequate to satisfy the annual demand of the presently known iron ores for the full life of the latter. That they should last is vital; and to ascertain whether they will last was the purpose of the present investigation, which marks the first attempt to study these Lakes Superior reserves. The Lake Superior region possesses and supplies the full assortment of iron ores needed for the conversion of ore into pig iron and steel ingots and castings. These ores are named bessemer; low-phosphorus and high-phosphorus non-bessemer, manganiferous and siliceous; and to include the term aluminiferous, would be in keeping with the most recent no men clature adopted by some dealers. About 35 or 40 years ago, perhaps less, most of the Lake Superior ore which is being used today was the material then considered either useless or too poor for immediate use; perhaps it was considered no more than a future reserve. An examination of the analyses of ores and the guarantees in the sales of those older times, convinces one that the opinions of those days must have been governed by only small differences in analyses. Some grades of ores used today in substantial amounts were used most sparingly only one or two decades ago. The relative quantities of the different ores used is ever changing; and, bit by bit, the metallurgy and the opinions are every changing and the prejudices against certain ores and practices decrease. The performance of a two-horizon depletion-type reservoir produced through combination wells is analyzed. By introducing some simplifying approximations, it has been possible to obtain formulas which are easy to handle. Only ordinary differential equations are used, and the development of the analysis can be followed without difficulty by the non-specialist. A rigorous analysis has been made of this problem. It has been found that the approximations introduced in the simplified analysis are fully justified and that errors seldom will be more than 2 per cent. The report shows the effect of the rate of withdrawal upon the relative depletion of the two horizons. Numerical examples are given. INTRODUCTION In its simplest form an oil reservoir consists of a continuous, homogeneous body of porous and permeable rock, enclosed at the top and the bottom by impermeable material. The flow of fluid through such a reservoir has been the subject of numerous papers, and the mathematical analysis of well performance, pressure build-up, etc., has reached a high degree of refinement. One of the basic assump tions introduced into these analyses is the homogeneity of the reservoir. In non-homogeneous reservoirs, these computations still can be carried out satisfactorily, provided small irregularities in the physical properties of the rock are distributed in a random fashion. The flow equations are derived as solutions of the continuity equation, and their solutions are dependent upon the assumption of many constant factors in the reservoir: permeability to oil, compressibility of the reservoir fluid, viscosity saturation, etc. When these axe assumed to be constant, the continuity equation can be solved rigorously. When these assumptions do not hold and corrections are introduced, it becomes very difficult and often impossible to solve analytically. The present analysis is concerned with production from a two-layer depletion-type reservoir in which the layers have different permeabilities. Instead of using the continuity equation, results were derived from some simple physical ideas. In a single-layer reservoir in which the oil is at a pressure above the bubble point, the rate of production often has been assumed to be directly proportional to the pressure drawdown. In the simplified analysis it has also been assumed that the drop in average reservoir pressure is directly proportional with the cumulative withdrawal. These considerations in the past have been the basis of the analysis of reservoir performance and have been applied to a variety of problems, often with marked success. In the problem under investigation these relationships are shown to be compatible with the equation of continuity, but the approach has the advantage of leading to ordinary differential equations in which changes in constants can be introduced without making the analytical solution impossible. It has the additional advantage that it can be understood more readily by the large group of engineers who are not reservoir specialists. For that reason, detailed steps in the mathematical developments have been shown in full. SCOPE OF ANALYSIS The analysis in this paper has been applied to a two-layer depletion-type reservoir in which both horizons are produced simultaneously in the same well. Because of the difference in permeability, it is obvious that the depletion of the two zones will proceed at different rates. INTRODUCTION TO MINERAL INVENTORY The first explanations to be made must answer the questions: What is a mineral inventory, and how is a mineral inventory different from an ore reserve? The term mineral inventory is a relatively new designation-born of the computer age and grown to common usage with the development of computer techniques for extending drill-hole sample values to regularly gridded data blocks representing in situ mineral values. The term has been generally accepted by geologists and engineers because it has a precise meaning which avoids many of the ambiguities of ore reserve. A mineral inventory is an estimated inventory of mineral in place and is usually achieved by dividing the deposit into regularly spaced gridded blocks to which are assigned estimated values using various extension techniques. A mineral inventory makes no presumptions about the mineability of the blocks or their cutoff grade. Such parameters are implied with the use of the term ore reserve. Ore has a specific definition (see Chapter 1) and ore reserve must reflect that definition and thus has economic and mining constraints. An ore reserve will be different under different economic and mining conditions and is subject to reclassification by many factors. The term mineral inventory avoids all such ambiguities. A mineral inventory estimate may be good or poor according to how much is known about the deposit, how extensively it has been sampled, and what techniques have been employed to assign estimated grade to the blocks. Such an inventory, however, does not change with time, economic conditions, or mining technology, but only with new and better data and methods. Thus, the mineral inventory is an excellent designation for describing mineral value distribution within a deposit's geological setting. The techniques for assigning values and tonnage to mineral blocks or panels are the subjects of this chapter. Whether a summation of the blocks be called a mineral inventory or mineral reserve is not important. Many conventional methods for computing reserves of minerals refer to the methods in terms of ore reserve calculations. OBJECTIVES OF MINERAL INVENTORY OR RESERVES Mineral inventories are computed for the purpose of determining the quantity, the quality or value, and the spatial distribution of potentially economic minerals within the earth. Such computations are made at all stages in the life of a mineral extraction process, from the early exploration phase to the final year in the life of a mine. To quote Popoff (1966, p. 2), "They are the most responsible and irreplaceable tasks in the valuation of a mineral deposit. Efficiency in extraction and productiveness is impossible without accurate reserve computations." The accuracy of estimate required for each of the three parameters of quantity, value, and location is dependent upon the objective for which the reserve estimate is being made. Again quoting Popoff (1966, p. 2): Reserves are computed to determine the extent of exploration and development; distribution of values; annual output; probable and possible productive life of the mine; method of extraction and plan design; improvements in extraction, treatment, and processing; and requirements for capital, equipment, labor, power, and materials. Bulk samples of silver have beat undercooled lo a large degree in contact with crystalline siliceous and ceramic oxide materials, indicating lhat stable oxides and oxide compounds are not the heterogeneous nucleants which normally catalyze cryslallization within a feu degrees of the equilibrium freezing point. Since 400-g samples were undercooled 250°C in contact with cristobalite, it is concluded that the undercooling required for homogeneous nucleation of sil11er is greater than 250°C. Undercooling was Jacilitated by precleaning the crucibles with a high-fires -sure blast of gas. IN numerous experiments on the undercooling of metal melts it has been assumed that a solid glassy surface, being non crystal line, will have no effect in catalyzing crystal nucleation from the melt. Conversely, it is usually accepted that any crystalline surface, in contact with a metal melt, will catalyze nucleation of metal crystals from the melt at degrees of undercooling less than that at which homogeneous nucleation will occur. Both these assumptions were implicit in the claim that homogeneous nucleation was observed in experiments1'2 on the undercooling of small metal droplets (10 to 100 mp diam). The droplets were thought to be freed of suspended crystalline particles which would otherwise catalyze heterogeneous nucleation. They were supported on flakes of silica glass which were assumed to be amorphous, and therefore incapable of acting as substrates for heterogeneous nucleation. In later experiments, large samples of molten metal were undercooled to temperatures similar to those achieved by the droplet technique by melting in a fused-silica crucible3 or a boro-silicate glass slag.4 Since these samples were usually fully enclosed in glass at the moment of freezing, it seemed possible that nucleation was homogeneous when maximum degrees of undercooling were achieved, despite the large size of the samples (up to 500 g). The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of variables in equipment and procedure on tube test results. This information was then to be used to formulate specifications, preferably within the practical ranges of existing machines, for test procedures capable of yielding precise and meaningful data concerning the magnetic separation of any magnetite ore, regardless of its origin. A survey of current practice was conducted among laboratories using the Davis tube test. Many tube tests were performed to experimentally evaluate the variables most likely to affect test results. A simple method was then sought for adequately interpreting tube test results. The Davis magnetic tube concentrator is a laboratory machine designed to separate a small sample of pulverized magnetic iron ore into magnetic and non-magnetic fractions. It was developed in 1921 by mechanization of a test previously performed manually No significant changes have been made in the design of the apparatus since that time. The Davis magnetic tube test continues to serve as a practical basis for judging the amenability of an ore to magnetic separation and for controlling magnetic separation plant operations. The apparatus consists of an inclined cylindrical glass tube supported adjacent to closely spaced pointed poles of a powerful C-magnet. (Fig. 1). To conduct a tube test, a sample of suitably prepared ore is poured into the water-filled tube. With wash water flowing through, the tube is oscillated to gradually reject the non-magnetic and weakly magnetic ore particles until the desired degree of separation is attained. Both the magnetic concentrate and the tailings may be recovered for examination. MAGNETIC SEPARATION BY THE DAVIS TUBE Mechanical separation of a specified mineral component from an ore usually requires comminution to fine sizes for sufficient liberation. Some distinguish- ing property of the mineral is then exploited to sort the desired mineral particles from the gangue particles. The magnetic separation of iron ores is based on the fact that magnetite, Fe3O4, is strongly attracted by a magnetic field while the gangue minerals are not. Maghemite, ?-Fe2O3, which may occur in certain chemically processed ores, responds similarly to magnetite. The magnetic process is practical only when the loss of iron in the form of relatively nonmagnetic hematite, Fe2O3, goethite, Fe2O3.nH2O, or other iron mineral can be tolerated. In the Davis magnetic tube concentrator, magnetic attraction holds magnetically susceptible particles in a magnetic field. Forces due to gravity, inertia, and fluid-solid friction tend to remove the less susceptible particles from the field. The probability that a given middling particle will be rejected from the tube in a given period of time is an inverse function of its magnetite content, with some modification due to particle size and mineral specific gravities. Continuous countercurrent decantation calculations have always been a headache to the cyanide man (and the chemical engineer) because of the simultaneous equations involved. These are tedious to solve, and there is considerable opportunity for mathematical error. This paper presents a shortcut method for making these calculations, which has been in successful use for twenty years by the author, and which is particularly valuable in selecting the best of several possible flowsheets, or evaluating the effect of various assumptions.
