Interesting results were recently obtained in geophysical prospecting at the Questa mine of the Molybdenum Corpn. of America in New Mexico. This paper describes that survey, which was carried out during October and November, 1927, by the Swedish American Prospecting Corpn. It is hoped that the paper will make it possible for the mining man to form an opinion of the applicability of geophysical prospecting under difficult conditions, showing, as it does, the results when prospecting for small small orebodies with comparatively poor conductivity, in a region of rough topography. Some principles underlying electromagnetic prospecting not known to be published previously will also be given in an elementary way, with special attention to the general structure of the electromagnetic field. Geological. Conditions at Questa The property is situated in the Taos range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. About this region, L. C. Graton says:' The main range is made up of Pre-Cambrian granites, gneisses and schists but in the vicinity of Red River igneous rocks of later age are present almost to the exclusion of the older series. These younger rocks are divisible into two groups. The older of the two, probably Pre-Tertiary age, is represented by large intrusive masses of monzonite porphyry, usually containing considerable quartz. The more recent group comprises intrusive and probably effusive dark-colored andesites and coarse andesitic breccias, some of which contain fragments of the monzonite; there are also flows of rhyolite and beds of rhyolite breccia. The evidence regarding the relative age of the andesite and the rhyolite is not wholly satisfactory, but there is little doubt that the andesite is the older. The ore deposits, although occurring more commonly in the monzonite porphyry than in the rhyolite, nevertheless are believed to be genetically related to the rhyolite. They certainly cut the rhyolite or andesite in places, and hence fall in the late Tertiary. The molybdenite at the Questa mine occurs in veins in the alaskite granite porphyry belonging to the older part of the Pre-Tertiary eruptives. The ore, as it is raised from the mine, has all average assay-value of $11 per ton, chiefly in the form of free gold. All the ore goes directly to the stamp-mills, of which there are two. The older and larger mill contains sixteen batteries of five stamps each, with one Frue vanner to each battery. The new mill has eight batteries of five stamps and two Frues to each battery. The large mill is driven by Leffel turbine wheels, with a pressure of eighty feet, and a consumption of 600 miners' inches of water. The smaller mill is driven by "hurdy-gurdy" wheels with a pressure of about 550 feet and a consumption of 150 inches of water. At both mills the tailings from the stamps pass over about 20 feet of plates on their way to the Frues. In each set of plates the first or upper one is copper, the rest are so-called silver plates. The bullion from the stamps is about 800 fine in gold and 200 in silver. The concentrates from the Frues average from 11/4 to 1 ; per cent. of the ore stamped. They very rarely exceed 2 per cent. I was unable to get the exact assay-value of the concentrates, but it is said to vary between $100 and $200 per ton. The concentrates are treated at the chlorination works at the rate of one hundred tons per month. The capacity of the works is somewhat greater than this, but as the supply of concentrates is limited it is not deemed advisable to work them up any faster. Care is taken to keep the concentrates always damp until they are put into the roasting furnace. If this is not done, a decomposition of the pyrites begins, forming lumps which do not roast, and which consequently cause a loss of gold in the residues from leaching. A Fortschaufelungsofen is used for roasting. Its dimensions, incloding fire-box, are 12' X 80'. The hearth is one continuous plane, but the charges, of which there are three in the furnace at one time, are kept entirely separate. ION exchange is one of hydrometallurgy's new tools, new in application, vet old in principle. Cation exchange between solution and a solid exchanger has been known for more than a century, but ion exchange is still in its infancy for metallurgical use. Still hampered by cost of media, it is faced with much development of actual physical handling. Growing consumption of the rarer metals and need to treat leaner ores are pushing extractive methods ahead. Public concern with stream pollution, or legal requirements, are forcing a clean-up of waste discharge. Industries are finding it vital to make some recovery from heretofore waste material to help pay costs of discharge treatment.

To note that environmental considerations had a major im¬pact on the minerals processing industry in 1971 would be something less than a profound observation. The degree of its importance was demonstrated by MBD when it established the Environmental Committee as a new unit committee within the Division to achieve greater participation in exchange of information relating to the technologies and problems involved. It is appropriate and necessary to devote special attention to this timely aspect of minerals processing, as its influence penetrates the research, engineering and operations of almost all unit technologies that comprise minerals processing. The pollution abatement aspect of this industry has been such a dominant factor in recent years there is reason to wonder whether progress in unrelated technologies has been curtailed. Perhaps so, to some degree, but unit committee reviews presented in this article suggest rather that it would appear to have served as a catalyst for accelerated progress in development of new methods and improvement in more conventional ones. Present concepts regarding primary metal or mineral recovery and by-product potential may change considerably as a result of improved technology in waste product treatment.

The Elk City district is in north-central Idaho about 60 miles east of Grangeville and near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Clearwater River (Fig. 1). At the height of its boom in the early sixties, Elk City had a population of more than 2000 people, Published estimates of the placer production from the district range from $10,000,000 to $18,500,000. Although the first quartz-vein location was made as early as 1870, very little gold was extracted from quartz ores until after the completion of the American Eagle mill in 1902. Between 1902 and 1932 a total of from $750,000 to $1,000,000 was taken from about six properties. General Geology Distribution of Rocks Banded gneiss (Fig. 2) is the most aburldant bedrock in the Elk City district. It is interbedded with schist and quartzite and ill some places these rocks have been intruded by sills and dikes. Banded gneiss prevails in the western part of the area whereas schist prevails to the southeast. Augen gneiss occurs for the most part as irregular bodies, which lie transverse to the trend of the banded gneiss and schist. It is largely confined to two areas; one of which extends from east of the American Eagle mine westward as far as the Black Pine mine, a total distance of about five miles, and another area of about two square miles in the vicinity of the California-Idaho placer mine. Quartzite is fairly abundant. In addition to the bands of the latter interbedded with gneiss and schist, some large lenses crop out in the southeastern part of the dik-trict near the southern contact of the area underlain by granodiorite. Granodiorite crops out over a large area and extends northeastward

A SERIES of awards for men and women in indus-try who by their inventions, heroisms, vision, and powers of mediation are contributing daily to the life and well-being of America in a substantial way, will be given by the Harmon Foundation. The series, to be known as "Awards to Honor Men in Industry," consists of two cash prizes, $1,000 and $500 each, accompanied by a gold and silver medal respectively, and 100 bronze medals. No one above the rank of foreman will be eligible. Because of the diversity of .American indus-try, the Foundation is planning to confine its awards during the first year to the following branches of man-ufacturing: automotive, building, electrical, metal and textiles, including clothing. WHAT proportion of the national wealth is represented by' the producing mines of the country?' Or by the- mining and metallurgical industry-as a whole, for it is impossible to make-an economic distinction between the mines that produce the ore and the plant that is used to get the metals from it. The total national wealth in fixed property is about $270,000,000,000. How much for the mines? I do not know that any one 'else has ever tried to furnish answers to these questions. In making such an attempt I am conscious that the result can be nothing more than a rough approximation. Yet even that will give an idea of relative values. No separate valuation for the mines of the country has appeared in any inventory of the national wealth previous to that which I compiled and published for 1916. -In earlier census estimates mines were supposed to be included under the head of real estate. However, an examination of the laws and practices of the several states with respect to mine taxation will make it evident that no good idea of the value of the mines of the coun¬try is obtainable from the assessment rolls. In my previous estimate for 1916, I computed the value of the mines at $8,000,000,000, which was approxi¬mately 10 times their net income as reported to the Bureau of Internal Revenue. In making that estimate I fell grossly into error, for several reasons that it is unnecessary to explain, but chiefly because the net income of the mines of the country in that year was exceptionally large. The whole subject of valuing the mines of the country en bloc is extraordinarily difficult At the best, no one can hope to arrive at, anything more than a rough idea about it. However, elements of reason may be introduced and may be made to serve as chief bases.

A preceding paragraph treats of the irregular manner in which ore deposits occur and the complex factors that control their distribution; the occurrence of metals in oreshoots in individual deposits is equally irregular, and the factors that control such segregation are equally complex. While the dimensions of oreshoots in individual deposits may not be foretold with any degree of accuracy, the occurrence of ore in shoots is not accidental, but is controlled by laws some of which are understood. Any one familiar with permutations and combinations who stops to consider the variety of factors that control ore deposition, and their varying relative importance, will admit that the science of economic geology must advance greatly before the occurrence of oreshoots may be predicted accurately in advance of exploration. The segregation of minerals in any oreshoot must be referred to some condition, or combination of conditions, local to the oreshoot as compared with the remainder of the deposit of low- grade or barren minerals. Among the localizing factors that have been recognized are, in filled fissures, the amount and distribution of open spaces available for ore deposition, and in replacement deposits, the degree of brecciation giving access to the replacing solutions; the intersection of veins with other veins, dikes, sheeted zones, or porous strata; the impounding of solutions by impervious strata; and the differing precipitative influences of enclosing rocks. A large proportion of important and well- defined oreshoots, especially in deposits of deep-seated origin, are not assignable to any of these factors. While a knowledge of the character of oreshoots in general is important, a knowledge of the behavior of the known oreshoots

AS methods for measuring fiber textures become more exact, it becomes justifiable to scrutinize an observed pole-density curve for evidence of minor texture components. These are disclosed by minor maxima or abnormally broad major maxima. One possible source of these minor components is twinning of the main component. In cubic metals and alloys, there are two kinds of twins: 1) Annealing twins in face-centered cubic metals. These are reflection twins on {Ill), and they can be expected to be present in recrystallization textures. 2) Deformation twins in body-centered cubic metals. These are shear twins on (112). Although usually formed only by impact, they might conceivably be present in the deformation texture of severely cold-drawn wire. Fortunately, both kinds of twinning lead to the same orientation relationships. It thus becomes possible to prepare a single list of angles between various planes in parent crystal and twin, which is helpful in examining pole-density curves for evidence of twinning in any cubic metal or alloy. Such a list of interplanar angles is given in Table I. This table consists of three parts, corresponding to the three major texture components—<100>, <110>, and <111>-most commonly found in the fiber textures of cubic metals. (communication to the Secretary*). -It is much to he regretted that in presenting a further discussion of these deposits, first described by myself&apos; and later discussed by C. M. Weld,2 Mr. Wang bas not made a more complete presentation of the evidence on which he bases his conclusions as to their origin. Mr. Weld said in his paper that his visit was confined to a few hours, that he saw only one of the several exposures, and that he took away no samples for further study. My own visit was brief, and for another purpose than the study of the geological features of &apos;the deposits, so the fact that Mr. Weld described as a hornblende-granite the rock which I described as a "dark gray syenitic rock," and which Mr. Wang identifies as a hornblende-syenite, seems of no great importance, since this rock is generally decomposed along the contact, presumably the only place in which Mr. Weld observed it. Later in the same paper (p. 31), Mr. Weld says that his opinion is that the magnetite of the deposits is primary, but Mr. Wang makes no mention of this in stating his own conclusion to the same effect. When Mr. Weld&apos;s paper appeared, I did not discuss it, because, although I considered the evidence- that he brought forward to support his belief that the magnetite is primary too slender to support the hypothesis, my own evidence to the contrary was equally tenuous. .The opportunities for observation and study open to Mr. Wang must have provided him with

The paper presents an analyzer and the method for the continuous determination of weight percentage of ore grains with diameter smaller than 75 pm in mineral slurries. The method is based upon the measurement of characteristic x-rays of copper excited by primary radiation of two different energies 16.5 keV and 60 keV from Pu238 and Am241 sources respectively. Additionally the backscattered primary radiation is measured in order to correct the variations of the solids content in the slurry.

The mathematical theory of the flow of two-phase, incompressible fluid through porous media is clarified, and the development of a general fluid displacement equation for two-phase, incompressible vertical flow through porous media is outlined. The relationship between the three components of the equation — the "fluid drive effect", the "gravity effect", and the "capillary effect&apos;&apos; — is discussed, as well as implications of the analysis in connection with the study of certain types of petroleum reservoirs. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to clarify and summarize the mathematical basis of the theory of two-phase incompressible fluid flow through porous media, particularly as it pertains to vertical flow, and to present a qualitative* exposition of the controlling factors involved in circumstances where this type of flow may exist. Although the generally accepted theory of heterogeneous fluid flow through porous media was developed a number of years ago by Muskat,1 and Buckley and Leverett2, 3 using the basic premise of Darcy, (and since then expounded upon by many others) there is a need for an over-all summary and clarification of this theory, especially regarding certain types of applications in connection with so-called "gravity-drainage-type reservoirs". The source and derivation is outlined for what is referred to here as the "General Fluid Displacement Equation for Incompressible Vertical Two-Phase Flow through Porous Media&apos;&apos;. This equation would apply under the condition where the pressure drop along the path of flow is negligible in comparison with the pressure level on the system, or where compressibility and solubility effects are negligible. These conditions exist ordinarily in gravity-drainage-type reservoirs. Specifically, it will be shown that this general equation may be developed directly from the basic equations, which, according to present theory, govern the general case of viscous heterogeneous flow through porous media. This general equation has appeared in the literature previously, but in most cases its development from basic theory is not indicated clearly, or the equation is presented in terms of groups of constants and variables involving reduced or dimensionless quantities. This presentation is expedient in cases of experimental or computer applications; but it may make it difficult for the practicing petroleum engineer to identify all the factors involved or to understand the relationships between them. Therefore, in the following development, only ordinary mathematical parlance will be used, and no terms involving groups of other equations or reduced or dimensionless quantities will be used. DERIVATION The following equations for two-phase oil and gas flow result from analogy with Muskat&apos;s general equations,** if solubility and compressibility effects are neglected, and if all volumes are considered in terms of reservoir conditions, and the water phase, if present, is considered to be immobile (or effectively a part of the porous medium.) In this case, the sum of the oil and gas saturations may be taken as unity, and the saturation of each phase is in terms of the total hydrocarbon saturation. In production practice, it is also desirable to know the effects of operating speeds and strokes on a plunger motion, as well as on the rod loads. For a particular well, data on rod loads can be obtained by measuring the load in sucker rods with a dynamometer. This method is not satisfactory because it does not permit the various factors to be investigated independently. It is also impossible to measure the plunger motion simultancously with rod motion under operating conditions. The mathematical solution is impractical because of the simplifications that have to be made to get a solution and the tremendous amount of numerical work that is necessary after such a simplified solution has been attained. This paper shows how analogies and models can be applied to the solution of these problems. The loads set up in a sucker-rod string during the ordinary pumping cycle are made up of the weight of the rods, force required to accelerate the rods, weight of the oil and force required to accelerate the oil on the upstroke, rod friction, stuffing-box friction, plunger friction, friction of the oil in the tubing and rods, arid friction loss through the valves. The problem of determining the sucker-rod load is further complicated by the fact that the long oil column and the sucker-rod column act as springs, which affect the transmission of the polished-rod motion. A further complication is the fact that the motion cannot be transmitted at a speed greater than that of the velocity of sound in the material, and this means that there will be a time lag in the transmission in the motion, as well as a modification of its magnitude and a phase displacement.
