WHEN a steel in the austenitic state, with all its carbon in solution, is maintained, at constant temperature, in contact with a gas that removes the carbon from the surface, vet without otherwise altering the composition of the steel, the change in weight of the specimen, after any period of exposure, is a direct measure of the amount of carbon it has then lost. The purpose of the present paper is to show how, by application of established mathematical reasoning based on the fundamental diffusion law and on certain postulates, this loss of weight yields a complete picture of the distribution of carbon throughout a specimen of regular shape after any period of exposure, with all the accuracy required in any practical occurrence of decarburization. Precisely the same is true for the gain in weight during the reverse process of carburization, or for the gradual gain or loss of any element, so long as the steel comprises only a single phase at temperature, provided always that the experimental conditions conform to the postulates. The change in carbon content from surface to center of the specimen is always continuous, when everything is in solution, even though under the microscope the decarburized zone (or carburized rim) may appear to be sharply defined. The experimental procedure is described and some typical results are presented, which are then interpreted by application of the diffusion law. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially an endeavor was made to follow the gain of weight during the process of carburization in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere, but it was soon found that the specimen became coated with graphite, which could not be removed without some loss of metal; therefore it was decided to continue carburization until the steel was saturated throughout, to remove all graphite from the surface of the specimen, and then to follow the loss of weight during decarburization in a moist hydrogen atmosphere at the same temperature as that used for carburizing. The carburizing procedure has been described in an earlier paper;1 it suffices to state here that the carburization lasted about 140 hr. at 760°C. (1760°F.) and 44 hr. at 1110°C. (2030°F.), these periods being long enough-on the basis of the calculations presented later-to ensure that the specimen was about 9.99 per cent saturated at each temperature. The speci¬men was a cylinder about 3.8 cm. long and 0.475 cm. in diameter; the materials were carbonyl iron, a commercial low-metalloid iron, and a steel with 3.6 per cent nickel and the usual proportion of other elements. The fully [carburized] specimen, after cooling at the top of the furnace tube, was placed in a lathe and sandpapered to remove all graphite; then the diameter was measured with a micrometer caliper, and the initial weighing (corresponding to complete saturation) was made. HAVING told you of the practices of the arts involving other metals, I wish to tell you also of the practice of that of tin.* Indeed, since this is an easily melted metal, in common use for the utensils which are made for human needs, it is an art known not only to skilled men but also almost to children, wherefore I could proceed with- out telling of it. However, besides the production of plates and bowls and many other dishes for eating from and keeping things in, this embraces two other arts, both of which you should know about because they are useful and beautifid. One of these is the art .of making the letters with which books are printed, and the other is that of making the sheets from which organ pipes are built. The vessels, as perhaps you have seen, are cast one by one in moulds made of white tuff. Several pieces fastened together are then put on the iron axle of a wheel rotated by hand, and [138v] they are turned with a slightly bent tool which has a cutting edge. In this way they are made thin and of a good shape. Then they are polished with a piece of linen cloth and a little powdered tripoli, and thus they are finished. The group of claims, comprising over 1,100 acres, located at Maitland (formerly known as Garden City), in the Ida Gray mining district, Lawrence county, South Dakota, are now being developed and operated by Alexander Maitland, the owner. Prior to the acquisition of this property two years ago by Mr. Maitland, but little work had been done in this district, and little was known of the extent of the ore-deposits. Recent development, however, has opened up some very promising ore-shoots. The ores so far encountered are the so-called " Potsdam siliceous ores," occurring in the flat formation lying immediately above the Cambrian quartzite, which dips at this locality about 12º. Both oxidized and blue ores are found, and the latter have proven particularly refractory to treat. No prospecting in the underlying slates of the Archean period has so far been attempted; but this work is one of the future considerations in the development of the property. Small quantities of blue ores are unavoidably sent to the mill, but special care is taken to send only the oxidized ores for the cyanide treatment. The ores, being close-grained and hard, have given considerable trouble in their treatment. Pyrrhotite arid pyrite exist in about equal proportions; arsenic, copper, and traces of antimony and tellurium are encountered, and considerable quantities of bismuth have been found in the zinc-box precipitates. The silver in the low-grade ores is slightly greater than the gold, while in the high-grade ores the reverse is generally true. Table I., showing the variations in the analyses of these ores, gives a fair idea of their general character. The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed. to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The increase in electrical resistivity, ?pT,at 78°K was measured as a function of elongation, E, at 78°K for a 2 pct (approximately) by weight finely divided alumina in silver material. The amount of increase in electrical resistivity (?pT) is a function of the amount of alumina present and can be represented by: ?pT = cen where c and n are constants. The constant c increases and the exponent n decreases with increasing alumina content. Approximately 33 pct of the resistivity increase is recovered upon annealing at room temperature. RECENTLY, dispersed phase alloys' have shown promise for use at elevated temperatures. These materials have a high creep resistance, a high-temperature strength considerably above that of the pure matrix, and a high electrical conductivity. These materials also show other properties such as retardation of re crystallization and resistance to flow even above the melting point of the matrix.' It is believed that high-temperature creep is retarded in these materials because the dispersed phase blocks the motion of dislocations. According to schoeck3 and also Weertman,4 the rate controlling process is the climb of dislocations around the dispersed phase particles. Any mechanical property of these materials, or any other material for that matter, can be explained on the basis of defect structures and their interrelations. It would certainly be interesting to learn something about the effect of a dispersed phase on dislocation densities and also their effect on point defect concentrations following cold work. This is the purpose of the research discussed herein. The method used was the measurement of the electrical resistivity as a function of elongation at low temperatures. This scheme has already been applied to the studies of pure metals.5 Electrical resistivity measurements conducted on pure metals such as copper, silver, gold, and so forth, have indicated that defects such as vacancies and dislocations are formed during deformation.5 It has been shown by van Bueren6 that the resistivity change, ?p, should increase with elongation, E, according to the following relation: Ap=Al/2 + B£3/2 where A and B are constants of the system; ?p is in µ? cm. The first term refers to the amount of resistivity change associated with line defects and the second term with the change associated with point defects. A later calculation yielded exponents of 3/4 and 5/4, respectively.6 Manintveld7 has shown that the resistivity of copper increases with strain according to a 3/2 power law, whereas van Bueren has shown that the resistivity of silver increases according to a 5/4 power law. Assuming then that van Bueren's calculations are correct, it appears that line defects contribute very little to the electrical resistivity. There is some doubt, however, as to the validity of van Bueren's expressions for all cubic metals.' In fact, the data on copper and silver are not conclusive. In this in-

One of the engineering proposals in the last Congress which was of interest to engineers was the soldiers' land settlement plan proposed by Secretary Lane, under which returned soldiers, sailors and marines would be employed on construction work in the reclamation of swamp and arid lands and would thereafter be given preference in the selection and settlement of those lands. This bill failed in the fillibuster at the end of the session. It is likely that some sort of a plan for soldiers' settlement will come before the next Congress. A new bill has been written up for introduction at the next session which proposes an "infiltration method" of buying improved farms in established communities for' the soldiers' settlement purpose, under the authority and direction of the Farm Loan Board. The contrast of this bill to the one recommended by Secretary Lane is of vital importance to engineers at this time; first, because of the broad engineering improvement program that the latter bill proposes as against no engineering improvement under the infiltration plan; secondly, the community settlement plan of Secretary Lane means improvement of waste lands requiring much engineering work.

THE external appearance of a crystal which has undergone plastic flow suggests that adjacent blocks of the crystal have glided bodily past one another along the slip planes. However, the great discrepancy between the shear stresses calculated to effect such a movement and those actually observed has for many years stimulated searches for more satisfactory interpretations of the slip process. Appreciable success in these efforts has been realized by assuming the presence in the crystal of various sorts of imperfections and by considering the consequences of the presence of these flaws when stress is externally applied, The theory that has received the most attention recently-that of dislocations-postulates the occurrence of small, mobile imperfections or dislocations which move through the crystal along the slip direction, each dislocation being attended by a local shear displacement of one interatomic distance. Thus only that portion of the crystal through which the dislocation has passed may be said to have slipped, Since each dislocation produces a displacement of only one interatomic distance, an avalanche or train of many dislocations would be necessary to account for the observed displacements of several hundred or thousand interatomic distances. The salient point of the theory of dislocations is the concept that a slip band does not suddenly appear in its entirety. On the contrary, it grows progressively across the slip plane as the individual dislocations successively appear and advance in a train through the crystal. However, the concept of growth is not intrinsic only to the theory of dislocations, since atomistic mechanisms other than that postulated by the dislocation theory can quite probably also describe the growth of a slip band. For instance, a slip band might resemble a disc-like interface that appeared and then grew continuously from a small size, producing a displacement that increased with the size of the disc, Whatever the precise mechanism, the concept of growth is in itself consistent both with -the observed low values of critical shear stress and with the experimental observation that slip bands. frequently do not traverse the entire crystal. The likelihood that slip bands grow implies that they must first be nucleated and that the initiation of slip can therefore be analyzed in terms of the general concepts of nucleation. Indeed, this suggestion was advanced1 several years ago, but the matter does not appear to have been further pursued. Recent advances in the theory of nucleations2,3,4 have encouraged such a treatment of the slip process. As will presently be demonstrated, this approach to the problem not only accounts successfully for the incubation periods that have been observed5,6 to precede slip but also predicts certain transient effects in the deformation process, The existence of these transients apparently has not hitherto

The formation tester, as the name implies, is a tool built for testing the contents of sands encountered in drilling Wells Without actually cementing casing on the sand. The tester was developed in the Mid-Continent and has been in use commercially there since about 1926. However, some two dozen patents have been issued on formation testers dating back to the seventies. The method apparently was an outgrowth of the old Mother Hubbard grain or bean packer, used around casing before the days of cementing casing. These packers were also seated in a tapered hole and if the formation tested was not satisfactory the casing was pulled loose and the hole taken down to another formation. A great deal of experimental work has been done in its development, and as a result of this work the formation tester became an accepted integral part of the petroleum development in California. The formation tester was introduced into California some three years ago by M. 0. Johnston. Months of discouraging and expensive work followed its introduction into this state, but one organization after another tried the tool and its use is now fairly general. Shortly after Johnston began testing in California, the Halliburton tester was also introduced into the state and now another tool is being introduced, the Shaffer-Roles tester. Principle and Operation of Testers The principle employed in all formation testers is that of packing off the fluid in the hole above the formation to be tested and thereby prevent,ing it from having access to the testing tool. This permits the fluid contained in the given formation to have unrestricted access to the tool. It is accomplished by running the tool and packer on the bottom of the drill pipe; the valves in the tool being closed while going into the hole to prevent fluid from entering the drill pipe. The packer is then seated at the desired point, trapping the drilling fluid above it. When this has been done, the valves in the tool are opened and the fluid from the formation is allowed to enter the empty pipe through the tool. If the

WORK was undertaken two years ago at the Hammond Laboratory for the purpose of determining the magnitude of the elastic range in single crystals of pure metals by means of creep tests, the assumption being made that if a true elastic range exists, the elastic limit represents the maximum stress for no creep. A sensitive extensometer was constructed, and creep tests were made on zinc single crystals at a variety of loads and temperatures1. It was soon discovered that there is tip measurable elastic limit in ductile zinc single crystals at, or above, room temperature. The inference that pure metallic single crystals may not possess a definite elastic range was not justified, however, since zinc had been tested in creep only above its recrystallization temperature, and several investiga-tors2,3,4 had already shown that above the recrystallization temperature polycrystalline metals will flow under very small stresses, while below that temperature stresses of a much larger magnitude are required. For that reason, it was decided to extend the study of the elastic limit to other metals having a higher recrystallization temperature than zinc. Aluminum and silver were selected, because of the ease of obtaining pure materials and of preparing large single crystals, and because the crystallo-graphic glide system of these metals is well known. Owing to the limited time available, the elastic range was investigated by slow tensile tests rather than by creep tests.

Commercial coke is made to-day in the United States chiefly from the Appalachian, the Illinois and the Colorado coal-fields. The measures of the great Appalachian coal-fields furnish by far the largest proportion, only about 1 per cent. coming from those of Illinois and Colorado. This is not due, however, to a corresponding difference in area. The Illinois field covers about 47,000 square miles in Illinois, Southern Indiana and Western Kentucky. The coal is high in both ash and sulphur, and on this account nearly all the attempts which have been made from time to time to coke it have resulted in failure, so far at least as the requirements of ironmasters are concerned. One of the earliest problems in the life of any community is the provision of an adequate supply of water sufficiently free from all types of contamination to be suitable for domestic purposes. Generally speaking, the location of most communities is determined to a great extent by the availability of an adequate supply of satisfactory water. For a mining camp, that consideration cannot be foremost. Here, the ore takes first place, and the men who mine it must do the best they can under the existing conditions. If there is no local source of water, it must be brought from some distant source or must be found by sinking shafts or drilling wells. Fortunate indeed is the mining company that discovers a commercially valuable ore deposit beside a never failing creek full of pure water, with sufficient water rights available. because the acquisition of water in any other manner nearly always involves not only a considerable period of time but the expenditure of considerable money. The experience of Climax Molybdenum Co. demonstrates the measures that sometimes are necessary in order to provide a suitable supply of water. The Climax mine and mill are on the Continental Divide! about 13 miles northeast of Leadville. The elevation of the domestic part of the camp varies from a minimum of 11,320 ft. to a maximum of approximately 11,550 ft. above sea level, and, as is common at such altitudes, the near-by streams that might be suitable for a water supply are small and intermittent, usually flowing only during the summer months. The only streams of any size in the immediate vicinity of Climax are the Ten Mile and Arkansas Rivers The headwaters of Ten Mile River are on the Company's property, and its water has been used for the domestic supply. The headwaters of the Arkansas River are about 2 miles distant and have not been used as a source of supply by the company. During the past 11 years of the production of molybdenum at Climax, the number of families living there has increased from about 45 to 283, and the population has increased from about 200 to 1200 persons. Consequently, the capacity of the water-treatment facilities, and the amount of water available, had to be increased to meet the requirements of the camp. As early as 1932 it was recognized that the water in Ten Mile River would not continue to be adequate for domestic purposes and after considerable discussion it was decided to drive a drift through the major fault in an effort to find additional water. This drift was completed in 1935 and tapped sufficient water to make the supply adequate. This water was treated in a tank underground, where lime was added, and was then piped into the domestic supply lines. At about the time this line was completed, the presence of fluorine in harmful concentrations was discovered in the water. This problem was submitted to the International Filter Co. and in November 1937 a plant of its design was put in operation for treating the water to remove the fluorine. Dimitri Kececioglu (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—The idea of applying metal cutting theory to comminution and vice versa is very impressive. Among others, the demarcation of wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely Kick's and Rittinger's, draws attention here. A study of Figs. 6 to 9 shows the following: In Fig. 6, 1 point out of 8; in Fig. 7, 4 points out of 26; in Fig. 8 only 1 point out of 13; and in Fig. 9 practically none out of 13 points fall out of curve No. 2. Also when grinding particles smaller than 5x10." in. it is difficult to measure very accurately the grinding forces, chip geometry, and particle size. In view of the above it would be difficult to make a positive and distinct demarcation of the Wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely, Kick's and Rittinger's. The idea of using machine grinding to determine the comminution properties of materials is indeed unique. The following cautions come to mind, however, regarding applicability of machine grinding data to comminution: 1—Grinding gives uniform particle size, whereas comminution gives a variety of particle sizes in the same process. The fact that grinding gives uniform particle size is not necessarily an advantage because in comminution the overall energy under actual comminution is desired and comminution invariably results in the production of a variety of particle sizes. 2—In grinding, a small particle is ground off a comparatively large surface. In comminution small bodies are broken down to smaller bodies. This makes it difficult to establish a concept of reduction ratio in machine grinding. 3—The mechanics of machine grinding involve direct shearing action under very high strain and comparatively high compression at the shear zone, whereas: comminution involves direct dynamic compression and surface friction with comparatively little strain and shear. Consequently the mechanics of machine grinding appear to be different from those involved in comminution. Hence one might arrive at erroneous con- clusions when comminution characteristics are eval-uated from machine grinding results. It is noticed also that functions other 'than Eq. 16 which do not involve the concept of direct proportionality of useful energy input to new surface area created (Eq. 2 and particularly Eq. 12) may be derived to fit the, data of curve No. 2. One such relationship may be u = ct-", where c is a positive constant and n is a positive constant less than unity. This, of course, is made possible because data of a very small range. of particle size are being fitted by the curves of No. 2 and the hereby suggested relationship. A sound comminution theory should be applicable to a relatively large range of particle size. George B. Clark (Department of Mining Engineering, University of Illinois)—While the experimental work of Walker and Shawin this article is of intrinsic value in revealing certain fundamental aspects of machine grinding, milling, and related processes and in adding to the store of information concerning the comminution of solid materials by this particular process, it appears doubtful that the results of their research can be employed to verify either Kick's or Rittinger's theories. Both these laws were originally developed and proposed on the basis of very simple, idealized hypotheses. The creation of parallel idealized physical laboratory conditions which would be required for either their proof or disproof appear to be well beyond the scope of human ingenuity, at least at present. One great weakness of the imputed verification is that the spread of the points plotted on the graphs is not sufficient to permit accurate 'curve fitting. The range of particle sizes included in the belt and wheel grinding is not extensive enough to show any general trends, particularly for the horizontal portion of the curves, said to represent Kick's laws. That the milling; grinding, and turning data obtained by Walker and Shaw for both metals and minerals happen to comply with. certain interpretations of these two theories under certain specialized conditions

The admission ticket had been signed, on the recommendation of my old and beloved teacher, Bobby Richards, by General Francis A. Walker at the time President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an institution familiarly known as M. I. T. I immediately proceeded to take advantage of that privilege by departing for Steelton, Pennsylvania, where I understood I was eagerly awaited by the educated officials of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. I was some. what disappointed at the casualness of my reception and at being tucked away in that preserve closet of steel works known as the chemical laboratory. MOST roof bolts are used in mines with bedded roofs, but it has not been determined to what degree thin-bedded roofs can be reinforced by bolting if there is no thick member in which to anchor the bolts, or what function the bolts must perform in such a case. Owing to widespread practice of sys- tematic bolting to support thin-bedded roofs, moreover, it is desirable to design roof-bolting systems on a quantitative basis. Specifically, a solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, what is the optimum length, spacing, orientation, and tightness of bolts consistent with safety and economy? The investigation reviewed here has produced a functional equation to evaluate these variables and establish basic principles of roof bolting.

As early as 1932 it was recognized that the water in Ten Mile River would not continue to be adequate for domestic purposes and after considerable discussion it was decided to drive a drift through the major fault in an effort to find additional water. This drift was completed in 1935 and tapped sufficient water to make the supply adequate. This water was treated in a tank underground, where lime was added, and was then piped into the domestic supply lines. At about the time this line was completed, the presence of fluorine in harmful concentrations was discovered in the water. This problem was submitted to the International Filter Co. and in November 1937 a plant of its design was put in operation for treating the water to remove the fluorine. The compressibility of reservoir rock is a factor which is generally neglected in reservoir engineering calculations. This is due in part to the fact that there is little published information on rock compressibility values for limestones and sandstones. Omission of rock compressibility is undoubtedly justified in calculations for saturated reservoirs; however, in under-saturated reservoirs,* expansion of the rock accompanying decline in the reservoir pressure may be of such magnitude as to affect materially the prediction of reservoir performance. The effect of rock compressibility will be of most importance in: (1) calculation of oil in place by pressure decline data in undersaturated volumetric reservoirs when the limits of the field are unknown or indefinite, and (2) studies of natural water drive performance. To estimate its importance in such cases, a series of laboratory tests were made to obtain usable values for reservoir rock compressibility. In situ mining is a process for recovering uranium from relatively small or low grade ore bodies. The process involves passing a lixiviant and oxidant, typically NH4HC03 and H202, through a uraniumcontaining ore body. As the solution progresses through the ore body, the uranium is oxidized from the plus four to the soluble plus six state. The bicarbonate complexed uranium laden solution is removed from the ore body and the uranium recovered in an above-ground processing plant. During the leach process lixiviant cations may be sorbed on the ore host, if the host contains exchangeable clay minerals. This report examines the implications of this clay interaction on ground-water quality, the various available in situ mining restoration methods, laboratory procedures for simulation and development of those methods, and the results of using the restoration methods in the field. Various restoration methods, including ground-water sweeping, clean water recycle, and chemical restoration are presented and discussed. The use of ore characterization, agitation leach tests, and column tests to study cation sorption and desorption, and thus, to identify and evaluate restoration methods is discussed. Ore characteristics identify the clay type and clay content, which allows the estimation of the magnitude of the cation sorption by that ore. The chemical effects of clay exchange and of chemical restoration can be examined using agitation leach experiments and packed ore column tests which also provide information on the physical effects. The agitation leach test is a relatively rapid means of determining the sorption and desorption characteristics of an ore. Unlike agitation leach tests, column tests can be used to assess the influence of solutions on permeability, on precipitation problems, and on other chemical changes. The effectiveness of using restoration methods, which were developed and tested in the laboratory, are examined by presenting field restoration data from several mining sites.

The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous. 2. The operation of the existing law has been found to work unnecessary hardship upon many claimants to mineral land. 3. The existing statute fails in large degree to encourage development of mineral resources. 4. The existing law often produces conflict between placer and lode-claim rights, working unnecessary injustice to placer claimants. 5. The methods of establishing the rights of locators on United States mineral land are defective, and are not uniform throughout the States within which such lands exist. LAW OF THE APEX The objections to the so-called "law of the apex" are so well known as to require no detailed statement. It is sufficient to point out that the apex rule was based upon the notion that ore deposits consisted of well-formed veins included between definite walls, like the slice of ham in a sandwich. The fact is that veins conforming to that simple type are rare. Irregularity is the rule, and the chief metal production of the United States comes from masses which bear no resemblance to the tabular form of vein. Manifestly the law of the apex fails completely in such cases. Moreover, the tendency is constantly toward the exploitation of ores of lower grade than could formerly be worked, and such deposits exist mainly in the form of large irregular impregnated zones and masses, so that the future. development of our mineral resources would be continuously embarrassed by shadowy claims to extra-lateral rights by the locators of so-called apexes
