The term "electrocapillary amalgamation" is used in this paper to designate amalgamation processes that depend upon electrocapillary phenomenon; i.e., the action of an electric current upon the surface tension of mercury at the contact with aqueous solutions. Electro-capillary amalgamation is selected as a name for these processes because the electrocapillary phenomenon has been found to be the effective agent in the use of sodium amalgam, as well as in the various processes using an electric current from a source outside of the amalgam. Amalgamation processes that depend upon supplying an electric current to the amalgam from an outside source, such as batteries and generators, have previously been called electrical amalgamation processes. There has been a tremendous amount of experimental work done on amalgamation processes involving the use of an electric current, as shown by the large number of patents issued on these processes: the earliest in 1885 and the latest in 1934l. Regardless of all the experimental work, the fundamental principles causing the operation of electrocapillary amalgamation processes have not been described. The explanation usually given is that an electric current keeps the amalgam bright and clean. Patent No. 328532 states: It is well known that when amalgam plates are used for collecting gold and silver from their ores the surfaces of these plates are liable to become tarnished or sickened by certain substances contained in the ores or in the current of water which is employed to carry the ore over the plates, and that in this condition they are unfitted for amalgamating the particles of gold and silver. To prevent this and to keep the surfaces of the amalgamation plates always bright and in a better condition for catching and amalgamating the particles of gold and silver I employ electricity in the following manner: . . . Money is one of the most .pervasive elements in human life. The compensation for a workman's daily efforts is expressed as a wage and is measured in money. What an individual may consume depends largely on his income which also is expressed in terms of money. If he would start an enterprise its size would be determined in large part by the amount of money available for capitalization and its success would be measured in net income expressed in money. In short, the most widely used common denominator for comparing merchandise, real property, jobs, enterprises, gross national product, or personal success is money. Despite this use of money by almost everyone past infancy to express his appraisal of the in- numerable values he sees around himself, the complexity of the device called money makes its nature and workings a mystery to most users. Some of the difficulty in understanding money results from the fact that it has three distinct but interrelated functions: (1) a medium of exchange, (2) a unit of account, and (3) a store of value. In many statements about money the discussion moves from one function of money to another without the speaker or the listener recognizing the changes. For example, the housewife says "We took the money we had saved up to make the down payment and after twelve monthly payments the television will be ours." When this housewife spoke of "saving up the down payment" she referred to money in its function as a store of value; when she spoke of "the down payment" she was using money as a medium of exchange; and when she referred to the "monthly payments" she spoke of money as a unit of account. Another cause of confusion in understanding money is its paradoxical nature in that it represents both the power to produce and the power to consume. For example, when the rich uncle dies one nephew may regard his inheritance as an opportunity to buy a farm and leave the ranks of the wage earners to become an independent producer, whereas the other nephew may regard his portion as the means of living in complete leisure as a pure consumer.

Early last March Mr. Jerome Coldren, an old miner add prospector, undertook a prospecting tour through the western part of Kansas, and discovered a very peculiar bed of rock, which yielded a white metal on fusion with soda. Mr. W. D. Church, city chemist at Topeka, examined the metal and found it to contain nickel. This discovery created much excitement, and was at first doubted. Many samples of the material, from a range of twenty miles, were sent to the Smithsonian Institution for examination ; and in every instance a qualitative test showed the presence of nickel, although the amount appeared to vary greatly. The ore is quite different from any other nickel-ore. It consists of a quartzose conglomerate from bean-size down, with much decomposed material between the pebbles, and the whole cemented by a more or less manganiferous limonite. In the qualitative tests, the nickel appeared to vary with the manganese. In all the tests, simple treatment with HCI dissolved a great deal of AI2O3. The principal deposit is near the top of a small hill on the divide between Smoky Hill river and Butte creek. The surface-rock is the conglomerate, and, at varying distances, stains of the limonite appear and gradually increase ; so that the ore is simply the lower portion of a bed of conglomerate which has been heavily charged with the manganiferous limonite. Below the conglomerate is a layer of selenite; below this, a soft sandstone, containing well-preserved fossils, and below the sandstone, a shale. From 2 to 6 per cent. of nickel in selected samples has been reported by different chemists; but the following two analyses on large samples show the average composition of the material:

WILLIAM ("BILL") EMBRY WRATHER, recently elected to a second term as Director of the Institute, is widely known as petroleum geologist, gentleman, and scholar. Born in Brandenburg, Ky., he was early endowed with a Southern accent which has remained with him strongly flavored by his later life in the oil-fields of Texas and the Mid-Continent region, and only thinly concealed by a Middle Western burr acquired during his student days at the University of Chicago. After graduating there with the Ph. B. in 1908, young Wrather (the adjective still fits!) joined the Gulf Production Co. Soon afterwards he married a charming Chicago girl, Alice Dolling, who, with their two daughters, has been his companion on many of his more distant trios.

AMONG several variables of the indentation hardness test is the effect of loading time on the measured hardness of a material. The most generally recommended duration of loading is 10sec.1-3 Although this short loading duration is undoubtedly satisfactory for harder metals, it is questionable that it is sufficient for very soft metals,4 or for certain plastics.5 The effect of duration of loading on the measured hardness of ionic crystals is largely unknown, although Onitsche and Mitsches found that the indentor (under a very low load) had not yet reached equilibrium after 60 sec in a variety of ionic crystals. To extend further the data of Onitsche and Mitsche, a systematic study was made of the effect of duration of loading for longer periods, up to 50,000 sec, on the 136 deg Dph of synthetic lithium fluoride. For comparison, less extensive tests were made on synthetic magnesium oxide and copper single crystals. The general procedure used was to indent a cleaved and polished (100) face of a lithium fluoride crystal using a Leitz Durimet microhardness tester. In certain cases, the indentor was so oriented as to align the diagonals of the 136 deg diamond pyramid indentation parallel to a (100) edge. In other cases the diagonal of the indentation was aligned at 45 deg to a (100) edge of the crystal. After indenting, the surface tested was etched in the acid etchant recommended by Gilman and Johnston.' This revealed the position of dislocation lines which intersected the surface tested. At these points of emergence were formed the usual sharp, pyramidal etch pits as shown in Fig. 1. The specific procedure used in studying duration of loading was as follows. The surface of the crystal was indented, and the load was left on the indentor for a predetermined time. This duration of loading was varied systematically from 1 to 50,000 sec. After the desired amount of time had elapsed, the indentor was removed from the crystal and the size of the resulting indentation was determined using a micrometer eyepiece. The surface was then etched to reveal the dislocation etch pit pattern around the indentation. Procedures used for lithium fluoride, magnesium oxide, and copper were similar. Preliminary studies revealed that, although an indentation was enlarged by increasing loading time, no corresponding changes occurred in the surface etch pit pattern. Since no evidence of dislocation movement was observed on the surface, it was assumed that the plastic deformation indicated by the indentor sinking into the surface was a result of dislocation movement inside the crystal. Many attempts have been made to eliminate most of the crushing plant and all the grinding plant in the process of ore beneficiation by substituting a combined crushing and grinding unit which could take coarsely crushed ore and reduce it to a fine size in one unit. This unit normally would have no other grinding media than the ore itself. This is true autogenous grinding, as we understand it today, and should be clearly distinguished from pebble mill grinding, where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. To compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding, the autogenous mill must use less labor and steel to produce an equivalent product at equal or lower power consumption. In general terms, a unit to perform these functions must have means to crush the ore to fine sizes and to then further reduce the crushed pieces by grinding. In other words, to do efficient autogenous grinding, there must be a proper balance established between crushing and grinding rates. There is not much point in crushing at too fast a rate if the grinding means are not present to reduce the small particles to the required product size. The crushing means used in an autogenous mill are impact forces of two kinds, namely, (1) the rock travelling at high speeds striking the shell, and (2) the lifters travelling at high speeds striking the rock. Grinding is probably effected in a manner equivalent to pebble milling.

"Butte is in many ways an ideal location for a mining school. The student lives in the atmosphere of his intended profession. By the time he has spent four years at the school and in the community he has a fairly clear idea of what kind of a business he is entering upon, and is freed from any illusions about its being a primrose path he is about to follow. The mines and mills and smelters are his lecture rooms in part, and the shovel, pick and drill form part of his equipment. Most of the students work in the mines during part of their school life, which serves the double purpose of assisting them financially and increasing their practical knowledge.The School of Mines is a state institution, amply endowed and exceptionally well equipped. The school is strictly technical and no attempt is made to prepare men for any other work but mining engineering. The mining men of the community take an active interest in the welfare of the school and are of much assistance in securing employment for its graduates.The teaching staff is entirely composed of men who have had practical, commercial experience in their various specialties, and no expense is spared in securing suitable men for the faculty."

THE remarkable advance in the Science of Mineralogy, during the years that have elapsed since this Text-Book was first issued in 1877, has made it necessary, in the preparation of a new edition, to rewrite the whole as well as to add much new matter and many new illustrations. The work being designed chiefly to meet the wants of class or private instruction, this object has at once determined the choice of topics discussed, the order and fullness of treatment and the method of presentation. In the chapter on. Crystallography, the different types of crystal forms are described under the now accepted thirty-two groups classed according to their symmetry. The names given to these groups are based, so far as possible, upon the characteristic form of each, and are intended also to suggest the terms formerly applied in accordance with the principles of hemihedrism. The order adopted is that which alone seems suited to the demands of the elementary student, the special and mathematically simple groups of the isometric system being described first. Especial prominence is given to the "normal group" under the successive systems, that is, to the group which is relatively of most common occurrence and which shows the highest degree of symmetry. The methods of Miller are followed as regards the indices of the different forms and the mathematical calculations. In the chapters on Physical and Chemical Mineralogy, the plan of the former edition is retained of presenting somewhat fully the elementary prin¬ciples of the science upon which the mineral characters depend; this is par¬ticularly true in the department of Optics. The effort has been made to give the student the means of becoming practically familiar with all the modern methods of investigation now commonly applied. Especial attention is, therefore, given to the optical properties of crystals as revealed by the micro¬scope. Further, frequent references are introduced to important papers on the different subjects discussed, in order to direct the student's attention to the original literature. The Descriptive part of the volume is essentially an abridgment of the Sixth Edition of Dana's System of Mineralogy, prepared by the author (1892). To this work (and future Appendices) the student is, therefore, referred for fuller descriptions of the crystallographic and optical properties of species, for analyses, lists of localities, etc.; also for the authorities for data here quoted. A proposed method of drilling utilizes sequential detonation of two types of explosive charges delivered to the hole by a conventional drilling fluid through pipe. A shaped charge first produces a long thin hole. A second charge, called a gauging charge, is pumped into the thin hole, explodes, and enlarges it to full gauge. In one suggested configuration, the explosives are contained in cylindrical capsules 4- to 5-ft long. A drilling head is positioned 2- to 3-ft off bottom. When a capsule is pumped to the bottom of the hole and stops, pressure inside the drill pipe increases and differential pressure detonates the explosive. Primacord along the length of the capsule disintegrates the capsule. The debris circulates out of the hole with the drilling fluid. The gauging-charge action was examined using 2-ft cubes of Berea sandstone. The sandstone (18 per cent porosity) was vacuum-saturated with water and surrounded by concrete. To prevent reflected tensile pulses, the acoustical impedance of the concrete matched that of the sandstone. A 750-psig pressure was applied to a drilling fluid within a shaped-charge-formed hole before detonating the gauging charge. In these tests, 190 gm of rock were removed for each gram of explosive detonated. A similar series of experiments on low-porosity (0.40 per cent) metamorphic limestone provided a more rigorous test. Extensive fracturing from the gauging-charge action prevented an estimate of the volume of the expanded hole. The diameter of the hole was irregular, ranging from about 2 to 4 in, or about fivefold larger than the hole created by the shaped charge. INTRODUCTION In the past, explosives have found a varied but somewhat limited use in the oil field. An early well stimulation technique, still in use today, in vo lves shooting ni troglycerin to en large the borehole and to increase matrix permeability near the wellbore. Bullets and jets are now the conventional method of perforating casing and tubing. Detonations are frequently used to "back off" or "shoot off" stuck pipe and, of course, seismo-graphic work has long depended on explosive-generated pulses to find attractive earth structures. Efforts to use explosives in drilling operations have received limited examinations1-3 which, in one respect, is surprising because explosives offer one way to transmit large amounts of energy directly to the bottom of the hole. Recently, Ostrovskii l described a Russian method of drilling with explosives that utilizes small capsules containing explosives which are pumped into the mud stream to the bottom of a borehole. As the capsules leave the end of the drill pipe, a detonation mechanism is armed. Impact detonates the explosive. In another configuration, two liquids (an oxidizing agent and fuel) in the capsule are separated by a frangible membrane. Separately, the liquids are nonexplosive. Near the bottom of the drill pipe, the capsule passes through a narrow constriction which ruptures the membrane. The mixing of the liquids produces an explosive. Impact is again used to detonate the explosive. About the time Ostrovskii was developing his method, Humble Oil & Refining Co. was independently doing research on another explosive drilling concept based on the sequential detonation of two types -of explosive charges. The proposed technique consisted of alternately pumping a shaped charge and then a "gauging charge" down a well. The shaped charge should drill a long, tapered hole, and the gauging charge should expand it to full gauge. This paper presents the visualized drilling concept and gives results of laboratory work which showed that sequential firing of charges can form hole at an attractive charge-to-rock removal ratio. An important finding was that increased environmental pressure, which is to be expected in wells, increases rock removal efficiency of the gauging charge.

The a-p type alloys are subject to a loss of tensile ductility with increasing hydrogen content. No hydride phase is visible in embrittled a-B type alloys. The embrittlement encountered appeared to be of the strain-aging type. Both compositional and structural factors are shown to influence the hydrogen tolerance of a-B type alloys. IN previous papers by the authors, the effects of hydrogen on the structure and mechanical properties of high-purity and commercial-purity titanium were described. It was shown that the presence of hydrogen in these materials results in a hydride phase having low solubility at room temperature. This insoluble phase had little effect on the room temperature tensile properties, but did decrease the notch-bar toughness to a large degree. The binary Ti-H systemz indicates that hydrogen is much more soluble in £ than in a-titanium. Hence, it is not expected that the embrittling effects of hydrogen in a-fi alloys will be similar to that found in a alloys. Materials of this type studied in the present investigation included two commercial a-/3 alloys, Ti-8Mn and Ti-4A1-4Mn; three high-purity Ti-Mn alloys containing 3, 6, and 9 pct Mn; and four high-purity Ti-Mo alloys, Ti-SMo, Ti-10.9M0, Ti-13.1 M0, and Ti-20M0, of the a-B and B types. Materials and Fabrication—The high-purity base alloys, composed of iodide titanium and high-purity metals, were prepared by double arc melting under argon in a water-cooled copper crucible, using a water-cooled tungsten electrode. Radiographic examination showed homogeneous Ti-Mo alloys. The analyses of the alloys used in this investigation and their as-fabricated hydrogen content, where determined, are listed in Table I. The two commercial alloys were 1/2 and % in. diam bar stock. No analyses other than hydrogen content were made. In order to maintain the a-B relationship existing in the two commercial alloys, vacuum annealing and hydrogenation were carried out in the B field prior to final fabrication. Fabrication then was done by The three high-purity Ti-Mn alloys were forged to 3/4 in. diam rods at 1600°F, and hot swaged to 1/2 in. diam at 1380°F. Machined and degreased bar stock was vacuum annealed or hydrogenated, fabricated to 1/8 in. diam rod by hot swaging, annealed in argon for 1 hr at 1380°F !75O°C), and water quenched. The six yz lb Ti-Mo ingots were forged to Wi in. diam rods at 1600°F and then hot swaged to % in. diam. Machined and degreased specimens were vacuum annealed or hydrogenated in the /3 field, prior to fabrication, by swaging to Y4 in. rod at 1400°F. After fabrication, the 5 and 10.9 pct Mo alloys were annealed in argon for 16 hr at 1290°F and water quenched to give equiaxed a-B structures. The higher molybdenum content alloys were argon annealed 4 hr at 1470°F and water quenched to give all £ structures.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory was involved in an oil shale fragmentation research program in cooperation with a Consortium of industrial companies to investigate the feasibility of using modified in-situ (MIS) recovery of oil from oil shale. Field tests were conducted at the Anvil Points Mine, Colorado, in the thick oil shale beds of the Green River formation. Part of the program included obtaining data about fragmentation by instrumenting the tests with accelerometers, velocity gauges, and the CORRTEX technique (Continuous Reflectometry for Radius versus Time Experiments). Some of the rock motion data from accelerometer and velocity gauges is presented, along with some conclusions. In addition, the signal recording system is briefly explained. The CORRTEX technique is discussed, and some results on explosive performance and stem behavior using the method are discussed.

A previous article reported a combination process for recovering both metallic iron and metallic manganese from the manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range in Minnesota.' In this process, the iron was recovered by direct reduction and magnetic separation and the manganese was recovered from the nonmagnetic tailing by leaching and electrolysis. The current efficiency during the electrolysis of manganese is quite low, in the range of 60 to 70%, due to the simultaneous plating of hydrogen.2,3 The parameters that affect the current efficiency are (1) the concentrations of the manganese ion and the ammonium sulfate buffer, (2) the effect of autoxidant, (3) temperature, (4) pH, and (5) current density. During the past five years, the mining industry has been subjected to new operating constraints that are unprecedented in number, scope, and urgency. The industry must operate in a safer, cleaner manner, yet produce more without large price increases. Compliance with any new sweeping legislation is always difficult-and particularly so in today's adverse economic climate, which is being aggravated by the steady stream of environmental control and tax-reform programs. In effect, while government is unwittingly but surely undercutting the country's productive capabilities, it blames industry for the resulting failure to meet consumer demand. Any such real or alleged failure then brings heightened bitterness from Congress. During the recent energy shortage, for instance, threats of nationalization were ventilated in public along with proposals to abolish the mineral depletion allowance.

THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

The propagation of pressurized fractures across a frictional interface is discussed, with emphasis on the case where an offset, or step, in the crack is produced. Theoretically, the steps can occur at regions of reduced shear strength along the interface. As a fracture is propagated toward a weak zone, extensional strain is concentrated at the edges of the zone where higher shear stresses can be sustained. Thus, when the fracture intersects the weak zone, it can be reinitiated at some small distance away on the opposite wall of the interface. The phenomenon has been studied through numerical modeling and laboratory experiments of the hydraulic fracturing process. Field observation of natural step cracks indicates that the mechanism is applicable to the genesis of jointing patterns in rock. Such features should not be confused, therefore, with steps caused by shear displacement of an interface.

This paper discusses the primary computer programs used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration's Bruceton Safety Technology Center to evaluate coal refuse disposal plans. These programs are currently being used by private consultants, government, and the coal industry for today's coal refuse disposal problems. This paper outlines five programs, their special features, and their importance in the design and construction of coal refuse disposal facilities. The purpose of the paper is to present the general steps necessary in the computer-modeling of each program. The programs that are discussed include BISHOP, STABL, RWE, DAMS2, and HEC-2, which cover the subject areas of slope stability, hydrographs, flood routing, and water surface profiles.

Chief among the varied problems facing the mine-manager is that of vein-structure and origin, which is highly important as a guide to successful discovery and development. If metalliferous deposits can be traced to the intrusion of waters along definite lines, then is there something tangible for him to study. But when he is told by a geologist that metalliferous deposits are due to some other cause, like magmatic differentiation, while not perhaps discouraged, he is impressed with a vague sense of new worlds to be conquered. In 1897, while manager of the War Eagle mine at Rossland, B. C., where, previously, the ore-bodies had not been supposed to occur as veins, I suggested to visiting members of the Canadian Geological Survey that, perhaps, the structure of the pyrrhotite-bodies of that mine, which had been proved to occur along well-defined fractures, might throw some light on the similar deposits of Sudbury, then held to be basic aggregations from the original magma. Later investigation has at least provoked discussion of this last deduction, questioning its correctness and suggesting that, perhaps, the deposits are actual veins. The following extract from a paper by J. E. Spurr' is quoted, because it sets forth Mr. Spurr's theory of the quartz-occurrences of the Silver Peak mines, which will be discussed in this article. It also graphically describes the attendant geological features.
