DR. TILNEY, the great expert on the study of the development of the brain of human beings and animals, tells us that the greatest difference between the human brain and the brain of animals is that man alone has shown evidence of being able to predict the future. Just why he throws overboard the busy bee who lays up honey for the winter, the squirrel who gathers nuts, and the humble ant, I do not know. At any rate, it is nice to be assured by an authority that we have this power of prophecy. My own experience with attempting to prophesy the future has convinced me that our only possibility of being good prophets is to be good students of history.

One Sunday night last month the phone rang and it was George Schenck from Penn State. How would we like to see a big scrap operation, he wanted to know. A few days later we were on the Connecticut turnpike headed for New Haven to visit a large scrap operation, M. Schiavone and Sons. George had a large clam basket in the back which he explained was for collecting trophies. The car shredder, he said, turns out some fancy metal shapes. In fact, they have gained a certain acceptance as objets d’art among George's friends and relatives. He thinks there may be a small, but possibly lucrative secondary market for shredded cars in the art world if the idea is imaginatively promoted. On the way to New Haven we received a briefing on the scrap industry. The scrap business grew from humble beginnings. Mostly it was started by a few immigrant Jews who collected junk in hand- or horse-drawn carts. The fortunate one might even have had a truck. Before proceeding further, we hasten to point out that the word "junk" is strictly taboo among scrap people, who prefer to refer to their industry as the "secondary metals industry."

We know that if, to a quantity of mercury, gold and silver are added until a putty-like paste is formed, and if this mass is spread on a flat surface and pressure is applied, a more fluid portion of the mercury will be squeezed out from the rest, carrying gold and silver with it. The proportion of gold to silver will depend, I think, upon various causes and conditions—the relative chemical affinity which gold and silver have for mercury; the amount of pressure used; the presence of other metals:

THE year 1935 witnessed one of the world's oldest industries-gold mining-attain the stature of a billion dollar business. Preliminary estimates indicate that somewhat over 30,000,000 oz. of gold was pro-duced, the largest output ever recorded and exceeding the previous year by more than 11 per cent. Of this huge total the Witwatersrand field produced about 10,800,000 oz., compared with 10,480,000 oz. in 1934. Russia was apparently the stellar performer, and from incomplete data it appears that between five and five and a half million ounces were produced by the Soviets compared with 4,200,000 last year and 2,814,000 in 1933. The United States nosed Canada out of third place with a production of 3,546,000 oz. against 2,916,000 in 1934, while Canada increased her total from 2,965,000 to 3,291,000 oz. Similarly, gains of lesser magnitude were made in Australia, the Gold Coast and other countries. As a result of great activity in developing outlying areas on the Rand, and the great number of new companies building mills in Canada, Australia, the Gold Coast and the United States, the years 1936 and 1937 should see new high records, as these new producers will more than offset any decline in the older properties. The whole world has become "gold conscious" during the past three years. It has been the subject of innumerable articles by economists and others, but, unfortunately, because of their lack of actual mining knowl-edge, they have treated the production of gold as a static affair, ignoring geological and technical factors. It is hardly necessary to draw attention to the fact that the world's gold-mining industry was slowly but steadily shrinking in importance, owing to the gradual depletion of known deposits that were profitable to work at costs existing prior to 1929. The International Geological Congress at Pretoria and the League of Nations Committee drew atten-tion to the estimates of the mining experts of the various governments predicting a steady falling off in world production. THERE is a need for men well trained in geo- physical prospecting. Although the number of geophysicists required by the industry in the future cannot be expected to be very great, there will always be a demand for courses on the subject. A number of educational institutions are, therefore, interested in providing instruction in geophysical prospecting. Some institutions will be satisfied with courses in general geophysical prospecting designed to give the geologist fundamental concepts on the comparative merits of the methods and the interpretation of the results. Other institutions will want to give special instructions in theory, field procedure, and interpretation of any or all geophysical methods. In giving such special courses a number of problems will be faced, and it seems to me that such difficulties are easier to overcome in an engineering institution than in a university. A knowledge of basic engineering subjects, such as required of all students in an engineering school, seems to be the best foundation upon

Wastes generated by the mining, mineral processing and metallurgical industries now total about 1.8 billion tons annually. The wastes include gases, dusts, solutions and a variety of massive solid mineral materials such as tailings and slags all of which now must be disposed of with a minimum of environmental degradation and at an acceptable cost. Some of the metal and mineralconstituents have potential economic value and their recovery can augment our primary mineral and metal resource supply base. The resource potential of wastes generated by the iron and steel, aluminum, clay, phosphate, copper, coal mining and processing, nonmetallic, and selected secondary metals industries is identified. Information on current efforts being made to recover these resources and the technology now employed or under consideration are presented.

The stress distribution at the surface of a twisted cylinder is analyzed along the boundary of a slip plane of arbitrary orientation and this analysis is applied to the torsion of cylindrical crystals of magnesium. A criterion for slip is developed and the critical resolved shear stress of magnesium in torsion is found to be 0.038 kg per sq mm. The mechanism of torsional deformation in magnesium and aluminum is described, as well as the relaxation of a twisted crystal at elevated temperatures. THERE has been considerable fundamental study A of the mechanism of slip occurring during deformation in tension and compression but comparatively little attention has been paid to the mechanism of torsional deformation. This paper is concerned with the way in which a single crystal deforms in static torsion and with the phenomenon of untwisting which a twisted crystal undergoes during annealing. Particular attention is paid to the application of the critical resolved shear stress law to torsional deformation. Probably the most likely mode of torsional deformation that can be imagined consists of rotation of one part of the crystal relative to another on the active slip plane. Here the most interesting feature is the slip direction. If a cylindrical single crystal is twisted about its axis and if, to consider the simplest case, the active slip plane is normal to the specimen axis, then the direction of gross slip at any point must always be at right angles to the radius drawn to that point. It follows that the crystallographic direction of slip must be continually changing, in sharp contrast to slip in tension which occurs in a crystallographically constant direction. Extensive investigations of slip in torsion have been made by Gough and his associates.' They made torsional fatigue tests on metal single crystals belonging to a number of different crystal systems and observed, with a microscope, the appearance of slip lines on the surface and of strain markings on the transverse cross section of cylindrical specimens. They concluded that the critical resolved shear stress law was just as valid in torsion as in tension, in the sense that slip occurred on that plane and in that direction in which the resolved shear stress was a maximum. They also established that the operative slip planes and directions were the same as in tension. They did not, however, measure the critical resolved shear stress in torsion nor, in fact, did they establish that a critical value of the resolved shear stress was necessary for the initiation of slip. Their investigations were, moreover, restricted to torsional fatigue tests which necessarily involve small strain amplitudes. IN 1945 tests were made in the coal washery of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation, at Pueblo, Colo., to determine the value of the Humphreys spiral. So far we have demonstrated that it is of definite value to us in rewashing a portion of our table middlings; and we are fairly certain that this is not necessarily the only place in which it can be used to advantage. Because of manpower and material shortages, experimental work has been discontinued for the present. Three of the spirals are being installed for use in rewashing the middlings, and testing and experimental work will proceed when this installation is completed. All evidence secured so far points to the fact that the spiral can make an effective separation of heavy material below 8-mesh; but that it is ineffective in removing larger, heavy material. This, of course, will limit its use to fine coal or a classified feed containing no heavy material larger than 8-mesh. In considering the results of our tests, it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation of this material is a "moral victory," as there is little material that could be properly called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequence being that previous attempts to clean the middlings have not been at all successful. Several articles dealing with the spiral and its use in treating heavy minerals have already been published,1 but for the benefit of those who have not seen these we include a brief description of the spiral and of the way it operates, taken from Bulletin 4 of The Humphreys Investment Co.: The Humphreys Spiral Concentrator consists of a spiral conduit of modified semicircular cross section. Ore pulp is fed to the top and, as it flows downward, the heavier particles concentrate in a band along the inner side of the pulp stream (Fig. I). Outlets for removal of products are located at the lowest points in the cross section of the conduit. Wash water, added at the inner edge of the stream, flows outwardly across the concentrate band. The width of concentrate band removed at the outlets is controlled by adjustable splitters. Concentrate is usually removed from the upper portion of the spiral and middling from the lower portion. Tailing is discharged from the lower end. Tests are usually made in closed circuit, since this provides a maximum of information with a minimum amount of sample. Fig. 2 shows the spiral set up for closed-circuit testing, and gives a good idea of the general arrangement of such an installation. The small cyclone separator is used to provide clean wash water without introducing additional water into the circuit.

THE high-frequency laboratory induction furnace with a rotating liquid crucible enables research workers to conduct certain investigations heretofore very difficult or impossible to realize because vessels are not obtainable that are capable of resisting the physical conditions or the chemical actions to which they are subjected. Applications for patents covering commercial uses of centrifugal liquid crucibles were filed in the United States in 1919,1 in France in 1925, in the United States and Germany in 1926,2 and in France in 1927.3 In 1928, Schuette and Maier,4 of the Bureau of Mines, reported the construction of a whirling table beneath a high-frequency induction furnace. SHAPE AND SIZE OF CENTRIFUGAL LIQUID CRUCIBLES When a vessel containing a liquid is rotated, the inner surface of the liquid takes the shape of a paraboloid under the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and gravity. The internal dimensions of the paraboloid rotating liquid crucible are governed by the diameter of the container and .its speed of rotation. Melted Wood's metal was poured into cylinders 2 1/2 in. in diameter, which were rotated at 180, 300, and 468 r.p.m. When the metal was solid, a slurry of plaster of Paris was added, and rotation continued until the plaster had set. How to interpret the composition of rocks has been a question which has caused a great deal of discussion and investigation among geologists and chemists. It is evident that that analysis will give the clearest results, which will give the relative proportion of the different minerals composing the rock as well as the weight of their different constituents. This, however, is a very difficult matter, and in those rocks which seem to the naked eye & entirely compact, like obsidian and other rocks of that class, appears to be impossible. Cordier, in the early part of the century, invented a process which is known as the " mechanical analysis of rocks," which is really a method of mechanical preparation, and consists in crushing the rock to a certain fineness, and then, by virtue of their density, washing out the different minerals, so as to make a mineralogical analysis, separating completely the different constituents of the rocks. In the hands of so skilful a man, this was a comparatively easy matter, and Cordier found no difficulty in ascertaining the mineralogical composition of a rock. The ultimate chemical composition was ascertained from the sum of the elements contained in the different materials. In the light, of to-day, it is very easy to see that the complete chemical analysis of the rock does not necessarily lead to the explanation of its character. It has been so difficult., however, to have any other kind of analysis made that most chemical examinations have been made as ultimate, and cot as mineralogical analyses. The panning out of the different minerals composing the rock, which are often very nearly of the same specific gravity, is so difficult that a person of ordinary mechanical skill is scarcely able to do it; consequently the mechanical analysis which Cordier proposed, and was able himself so skilfully to effect,, has never been practiced to any extent. A school was formed in France consisting of a very small number of Cordier's followers, which, in face of the difficulty of acquiring the method, very soon died out as a school, though some of his most skilful followers are still living. THE discovery well of the world's -deepest oil producing structure, University 1-B of Group No. One Oil Corporation, in the Big Lake oil field, Reagan County, Texas, has had a remarkable record. The well is outstanding for the following reasons: (1) It is the world's pioneer well to produce. oil in commercial quantities from a structure 8500 ft. below the earth's . surface; (2) this well was the only. producer from the 8500-ft. pay for a period of 17 months and 24 days; (3) the flow of the discovery well has been free from-the customary changes at the casinghead, with the exception of putting on a back-pressure of 185 lb.; and, (4) the well's daily production of oil and gas increased rather steadily for 17 months and 18 days from an initial of 40 bbl. per day to a maximum of 2926 bbl. per day, and then six months later, after a period of decline and self-readjustment to subsurface changes caused by six more deep producers, the well set its real record for one day's production of oil at 2950 bbl

A shaft of 1690 m depth is currently being sunk to exploit a large copper sulphide orebody. The primary crusher chamber, main pump chamber and the other excavations on the crusher level were developed from the shaft during the sinking operation. The maximum principal stress is horizontal and has a magnitude twice that of the vertical stress. It increased linearly with depth and on the elevation of the crusher level, 1613 m below surface, the stresses induced by mining can exceed the strength of the rock. The development of a workable crusher level layout, and a crusher chamber design and support system are described. Excavation and support of the workings are detailed and a comparison of expected and actual results is made.

Numerous brands of virgin pig lead are used in the manufacture of lead and lead-alloy cable sheath for commercial cables. In changing from one brand of pig lead to another a readjustment of press operating conditions is nearly always necessary. This is due largely to different flow characteristics, and some brands extrude at a much lower pressure than others; for example, copper-bearing lead requires much more pressure than a low-bismuth lead under the same operating conditions. With the modern type of lead press the extrusion practice in general differs very little. Molten lead at a temperature of 375" to 400" C. (710" to 750" F.) is cast in a water-cooled cylinder and allowed to cool or solidify into a slug for six to nine minutes, This slug is forced into the die block and around the core tube through which the cable runs. The • die block is held at an optimum temperature by means of gas flames, usually 175" to 225" C. (350" to 435" F.). Measurements of the temperature of the cable sheath taken at the time of extrusion have covered a range of 190" to 225" C. (375" to 435" F.). According to Tammann, the rate of extrusion for a metal under constant pressure through a simple orifice is almost doubled for each 10" C. rise in temperature. Because of the irregularity of die-block construction, such a great increase is not obtained in lead-cable extrusion practice. To obtain more definite information about the effect of small percentages of metals usually present as impurities in virgin pig lead, a series of compression tests were made covering several different brands of lead and various alloys. Since the usual temperature of the sheath is approximately 200" C. as it emerges from the die block, these compression tests were all performed at 200" C. Five different brands of virgin pig lead were selected, as follows: Brand A: A desilverized western lead of very high purity. This lead contains neit,her copper nor bismuth. Brand B: A bismuth-free southeastern Missouri lead, usually containing 0.05 to 0.08 per cent copper. In May 1960, six months after conversion of one- half of the Uranium Reduction Co. mill from acid to alkaline leach, severe corrosion was encountered in the 112 stainless steel wash baskets in the resin- in-pulp portion of the uranium circuit. Fortunately the corrosion was limited to the stainless steel screen cloth and bolts. The frames were not affected. Each resin-in-pulp wash basket serves as a container and a vehicle for approximately 40 cu ft of ion-exchange resin. Four baskets are installed in each tank through which uranium-rich solution flows as the baskets move up and down mechanically in the tank. The ion-exchange resin has an affinity for the uranium in the solution which causes it to be deposited on the resin in solid form. By reverse action with different chemical solutions, the uranium may be stripped from the resin for further processing and purifying. This section is the first step in the actual recovery of the uranium.
