Colloidal silica dissolved in aqueous suspensions of high surface area thoria was permitted to adsorb on the thoria surface. Silica in three forms was identified by means of infrared spectroscopy and characterized by Si-O vibrational modes in the 9.0 to 10.5 region. A band at 9. 1 was attributed to free unad-sorbed silica, while adsorbed silica resulted in bands of greatest absorbency at 9.4 or 10.3p, depending upon the character of the surface bonding. Size considerations, the amount of silica adsorbed, and the character of the infrared spectrum for strongly adsorbed silica has been interpreted as evidence of formation of chain or layer silica linkages on the thoria surface. Infrared spectroscopy has been used successfully in recent years for the identification of minerals and synthetic inorganic substances. Unfortunately, infrared studies of silicate minerals have not proceeded to the point that unambiguous assignments may be made for Si-O vibrational modes as affected by lattice substitutions and structures. Several investigators have presented infrared spectra of silicate minerals, 1,7 and their work has pointed to the potential value of infrared to identify minerals as well as to note the sensitivity of various Si-O modes to structural and substitutional environments. The strong infrared absorption of various Si-O vibrational modes makes the infrared method a very useful tool for the study of silica adsorbed on the surface of solids of high surface area. Spaepen et a18 studied the adsorption of silica on thoria surfaces from aqueous solutions of silicic acid up to 300°C. A general review of the application of the infrared method to the study of surface adsorption has been presented by Pliskin and Eischens.9 EXPERIMENTAL Du Pont colloidal silica, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) and Ludox HS (30.25% SiO2) in aqueous suspensions were used as the sources of silica for the adsorption studies. The thoria used for this study was supplied by Union Carbide Nuclear Co.* under the preparation *Chemical Technology Div., Union Carbide Nuclear Co., Oak Ridge, Tenn. . number D-16-650. It was fired from the oxalate at 650°C and had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 m2 per g measured by nitrogen adsorption. The chemical analysis of the D-16 thoria in ppm was: CO3= (5500), NO3- (< 4), so4±PO4 (100), and Si (20). The Ludox silica was placed in contact with the thoria in a two-liter autoclave10 between room temperature and 250°C. Slurries were made by placing 1 g of thoria in one liter of distilled water containing various additions of the silica sol. Samples were removed from the autoclave by opening a small stainless steel valve. Extracted samples were centrifuged for 10 min and excess solution was decanted. The sample was then dried for several hours at 80°C. Infrared samples were prepared by thoroughly mixing 10 mg of the thoria with 400 mg KBr in polystyrene vials on a "Wig-L-Bug" amalgamator. COMPOUNDS in the U-N system have received little attention since the work of Rundle, Baen-ziger, Wilson, and McDonald in 1948.&apos; They described the three nitrides UN2, U2,N2, and UN as the only phases in this system. The region between UN and U,N, was reported to consist of the two phases while the region between U,N, and UN, is a homogeneous solid solution in which the U,N3, structure transforms with increasing nitrogen content into the UN, structure. This report presents the results of an X-ray diffraction study of the phases present in the region of the diffusion gradient on uranium reacted with nitrogen at several temperatures between 500" and 915°C. Several samples of uranium used in U-N gas-metal reactions by Mallett and Gerds were available for X-ray diffraction study of phase composition through the diffusion gradient. X-ray diffraction data were obtained using filtered iron radiation at intervals through the diffusion layer of the several samples on filings or turnings at approximately 0.001 in. increments down to the base metal. Representative X-ray diffraction patterns from various layers through the case on uranium after nitriding at 850°C are shown in Fig. 1. These data show that three different phases are present in the

Drilling operations on the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf are following two general plans. The first plan placed all buildings. equipment, and materials on a large platform while the second copies Lake Maracaibo drilling methods by placing a minimum of equipment on the platform and using a floating drilling tender or drill barge anchored adjacent to the platform in an attempt to take maximum advantage of flotation in an effort to reduce costs. A complete power rig, mud pits, pipe racks, and small auxiliaries have been placed on the platform as shown in Figure 1, to assure proper handling of drilling operations under the most adverse weather. This has the economic advantages of eliminating the fabrication of a large structure, a material reduction of rigging up time on each structure. and elimination of delay time on equipment while quarters and equipment placed on the tender are being rigged up. These factors have certainly proved their economic value in drill barge operations in the Louisiana and Texas coastal area. Naturally the heart of such an operation is the anchorage. This anchorage, to permit taking advantage of maximum economies. must hold the ship in a relatively fixed position under the following weather conditions: (1) Winter northwesters (2) Southeasterly gales (3) Severe rain squalls In hurricane weather all operations must be suspended regardless of method of operation and the floating tender will, if possible, be moved to a protected location. However, in case of an emergency the floating tender should be prepared to swing with the wind and seas on a single anchor as there is considerable doubt that either ship or anchorage could withstand the severe strains imposed by fixed anchorage in hurricane weather. Northwesters are reported to have developed wind gust velocities as high as sixty miles per hour and steady winds of approximately forty-five miles per hour. Fortunately these winds do not travel a great distance over water before arriving at our location, and, while they can possibly develop seas approximately eight feet high, the waves are short, and if taken on the bow or stern of a ship 250 feet or more in length they should not present a difficult problem. On the other hand southeast gales having a long fetch and maximum steady wind velocities of approximately thirty miles per hour can possibly develop long swells approximately twelve feet in height. These should develop the most severe anchorage problem. To combat these waves any workable anchorage plan should permit maneuvering the ship in such a manner as to head the bow or the stern into the seas and still maintain contact with the structure. Rain squalls develop wind gust velocities as great as sixty miles per hour. However, they are local and the seas have not been a source of great trouble. To permit continuous operation the anchorage must be able to withstand these winds broadside to the ship as the wind direction often changes radically in a very sliort time. THIS paper describes the methods used to determine the rates of payment for contract work and the plan of contract supervision in the Elm Orlu mine. A discussion of the theory of wages and the eternal question-what is a just wage-are beyond the scope of this article. In the fall of 1920 the Elm Orlu was the largest mine in Butte using the day&apos;s pay system of payment for stoping operations. High labor and supply costs and a falling market for the product of the mine made economic mining difficult. The mining method had been changed from the square set stoping to timbered rilling to eliminate most of the shoveling. There was no opportunity to reduce the cost of supplies other than more rigid economy in their use. It was recognized, however, that the labor efficiency was low and that the reduction in costs depended on increasing the output per man. While in general, the low man efficiency was a resultant of the high wages paid and the shortage of men during the war and subsequent period of inflation, it was felt that the contract and bonus system used in the other mines was the main factor in that the most capable and energetic men had been attracted to those mines where more than average skill and dili-gence were recognized by more than average pay.

An experimental investigation was conducted upon five different paired samples of oil and gas from a field in Louisiana. The study, with each pair of samples, included the measurement of the formation volume and the volume of the liquid phase for three mixtures of the oil and gas. The gas-oil ratio varied from approximately 200 to over 40,000 cu ft per bbl and measurements were made at temperatures between 40" and 250°F. The gravity of the tank oil for the five samples under investigation varied between 38.0" and 55.8" API. The composition of the oil and gas samples and their mixtures is submitted &apos;References given at end of paper. A number of diagrams depicting the effect of temperature and gas-oil ratio upon retrograde dew-point pressure are presented. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades a fairly large number of investigations were made of the volumetric behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures. The earlier work of Beecher and Park-hurst&apos; and a more recent report on samples from Dominguez Field2 are typical of research of this nature. Such studies have been used in estimating the volumetric behavior of fluids in producing fields other than those from which samples were taken. Progress has been made3.4.5 in correlating the influence of pressure, temperature, and composition upon the specific and formation volume of hydrocarbon mixtures of relatively low gas-oil ratios, but attempts to extend this correlation to higher ratios have not been particularly successful. The influence of composition upon the volumetric behavior of such systems cannot be simply related to a single parameter such as gas-oil ratio. In order to aid in the extension of the correlation of the volumetric behavior of mixtures of oil and gas to higher ratios, a rather complete study was made of five different pairs of samples from a Louisiana field. The complexity of the influence of composition upon the volumetric and phase behavior of such systems in the regions of retrograde condensation was indicated by earlier Work,6,7,8,9,10 and it is doubtful if simple correlations can be established in these regions with the information currently available. Data were obtained with hematite with octyl hydroxamate and oleate as collectors to determine the mechanism of collector adsorption and also to establish the roles that conditioning time and temperature assume in this system. The presence of hydroxy complexes of iron are apparently necessary for chemisorption of collector to occur, and it appears as if extended conditioning times and elevated temperature promote greater dissolution of the mineral and hence greater concentrations of hydroxy complexes. Data were also collected with two natural hematitic ores. With one ore that was ground to 70% - 15u, an addition of 0.4 lb per ton hydrox-amate resulted in a final concentrate recovery of 86% at a grade of 64% iron. Satisfactory concentrate grade could not be obtained with fatty acid under these conditions. The effect of conditioning time prior to the addition of collector was also examined with another ore. When the ore was conditioned for 3 min, 19% of the iron was recovered in the concentrate at a grade of 67% Fe. With a conditioning time of 7 min, 73% of the iron reported to the concentrate at a grade of 62% Fe. These products were obtained with an addition of 0.2 lb per ton hydroxamate. This ore also responded well to flotation with fatty acid. The use of potassium octyl hydroxamate as a collector for iron oxide has been the subject of an earlier study.1 From this initial study, it was suspected that hydrolysis of surface ferric iron was involved in collector adsorption. More recent work in other systems has shown that slight mineral dissolution, followed by hydrolysis of cations common to the mineral lattice, is apparently necessary, and that adsorption of these hydroxy com- plexes probably occurs prior to the adsorption of collector. In view of these facts, work has been continued on the hydroxamate-hematite and oleate-hematite systems to gain better insight into the mechanisms of collector adsorption on iron oxide. Microflotation experiments in conjunction with infrared analysis were used in this regard. In addition it was felt necessary to establish more clearly the responses that can be obtained from natural ores when hydroxamate is used as collector as compared to those obtained when fatty acid is used. A GREAT deal of work has been done on the rolling of single crystals of iron. Barrett and evensoon studied end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals and found that some crystals maintained a sharp single orientation during rolling. Others rotated into two or more orientations, and some fragmented and approached the entire polycrystalline texture depending on the original orientation of both the normal and rolling directions. Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl2 studied iron-silicon alloys and found that the addition of silicon to the iron had little effect on heavily rolled polycrystalline material. Dunn3 has extensively studied the cold-rolling and recrystallization of silicon-iron single crystals. Dunn found that for single crystals having initial orientation between (110) [001] and (111) [112], the principalcomponent of the cold-rolled texture is (111) [112]. Koh and Dunn4 studied the cold-rolled textures of single crystals having initial orientations in the range (001) [110] to (111) [IT01 and found that these are stable end orientations. They also found that all orientations having a [110] direction parallel to the transverse direction rotate to either the (001) [110] or the (111) [112] stable end orientation except for orientations near (112) [11], which divide and produce a final texture consisting of (001) [110]and (111) [112] components. Crystals having a (111) <112>-type texture re-crystallized to a (120) [001] or (110) [001]-type texture. Crystals having orientations with a range of (001) to (335) in the rolling plane and [110] in the rolling direction recrystallized5 to a wide spread of the initial orientations resulting from a multiplicity of 30-deg rotations about several (110) poles. The present study was undertaken to relate other orientations of crystals of silicon-iron to their cold-rolling and recrystallization textures, so that one might rationalize polycrystalline recrystallization data on the basis of the known deformation texture and the behavior of single crystals in these orientations. PROCEDURE Samples were obtained from a cylindrical ingot of 3 pct silicon iron prepared as follows: Armco iron was melted with high-purity silicon flakes under an atmosphere of argon to minimize oxidation. The alloy was poured into a special mold to form an ingot which consisted partially of large columnar crystals. Plates were cut from the columnar portions of the ingot with the longitudinal direction parallel to the columnar axes and ground to 0.040 in. thick. The plates were heavily etched to a thickness of 0.032 in. to remove the cold-worked surface. Orientations of seventeen crystals were determined by Laue back-reflection techniques keeping the mean columnar axis as the reference direction. The plate was then cut in two, parallel to the columnar axis. One portion of the plate was rolled at room temperature parallel to the columnar axis to a reduction in thickness of 84 pct. The remaining portion of the plate was rolled also at room temperature across the columnar axis to a reduction of 66 pct, at which point the crystals began to separate at the boundaries. After rolling, nine individual crystals were removed from the strip by cutting along the crystal boundaries with a jeweler&apos;s saw. Fig. 1 shows the original orientations of the six crystals that were straight-rolled and of the three crystals (4, 7, and 8) that were cross-rolled. Each rolled crystal was carefully etched to approximately 0.002 in. thick. Textures of the cold-rolled crystals were determined by use of the diffractometer with a non-integrating sample holder. The pole figures were made for the (200) poles using molybdenum Ka radiation and were plotted by an automatic stereographic projection recorder.&apos; Spurious poles were determined by rerunning portions of the pole figures using strontium oxide to filter out the Ka radiation. The central portions of the pole figures have not been determined. T HE Mid-Continent Section of the Petroleum Division met on Mar. 11 in the engineer&apos;s room of the Tulsa Building, Tulsa, Okla., for the purpose of reviewing the papers presented at the annual meeting in New York. L. G. E. Pignell, chairman and delegate to New York for the Mid-Continent Section, read a brief report giving the outstanding features of the various papers that were presented. He expressed regret that more members of the Division could not be present in New York to hear the interesting papers and discussions. It was his opinion that the various remedies presented for overproduction seemed rather theoretical and impractical and he recommended that the engineers come to the aid of some of the economists in giving more practical consideration to the overproduction problem.

Modern advances in practically all lines of industrial develo1)ment have occurred in such rapid succession, and have been accepted so readily as accomplished facts, that a retrospect surprises us, by showing how comparatively few of the acknowledged factors of improved conditions may be considered as old. While these advances have not been confined to any country, they have been more pronounced in some than in others, and nowhere more so than in the United States, the population of which, having multiplied nearly three-fold between 1870 and 1910, demanded a proportionately greater increase in materials, supplies, and manufactured products. It therefore appears desirable to discuss mainly conditions in the United States, as concrete evidence of industrial progress throughout the world. Looking backward for but three generations, me mar trace the introduction and developmerit of canal- and steamboat-narigation ; railroad-transportation; artificial illumination beyond that f&apos;urnished by candles and animal-oils; quick communication by mail, and subsequently by telegraph or telephone; the manufacture of iron, beyond forms of small dimensions; the production and utilization of steel in large quantities; the economic use of mineral fuel, oil and gas, etc. The practical coincidence of the fortieth anniversary and the 100th technical meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, offers temptation to recall and compare the conditions of milling and metallurgy in or about the years 1871 .and 1911. A complete résumé would cover phenomenal changes in mining-methods and equipment by which the output of individual exploitations has grown from scores to hundreds and even thousands of units in equal time-intervals. This paper will discuss the fundamentals of design of these lines from the economic as well as the engineering viewpoint, pointing out the effect of the volumes transported, and the load factor, on the unit costs of transportation, as well as the effects on costs of the character 01 the fluids the lines are called upon to handle. Generally speaking, crude-oil pipe lines carry oil from the producing fields to the refineries. Sometimes part of the journey is by pipe line to a coastal point and tank ships are employed for the rest of the trip. Drilling for oil in the eastern producing states was fairly active during the first part of 1931, although less so than in 1930. With low prices development declined during the year, until the low prices of the summer resulted in an almost complete shut-down of drilling. This coincided with the action of the Conservation Board of the Pennsylvania Crude Oil Producers Assn, in limiting pipe line runs to 50 per cent of the 1930 normal for the Bradford district and upper country, and to 70 per cent for the balance of the region. Not only was new drilling halted but in many cases oil-producing properties were shut in. In November crude prices were partly restored, and all oil offered was being taken except in the Bradford district which was restricted to 80 per cent of the 1930 normal. During the latter part of the year drilling was being resumed on a moderate scale, and new production indicated a resumption of the proration order. The interest in gas development which has been under way for several years, maintained its supremacy over the search for oil in 1931. New reserves of importance were developed during the year in the Western Kentucky Coal Basin, in the Eastern Kentucky shale gas territory, in Stark County, Ohio, as well as the Oriskany sand development in northern Pennsylvania and central New York. A gas line was completed to the Eastern Seaboard serving Washington and Baltimore, and other lines were under construction designed to serve portions of the territory not hitherto supplied with natural gas. The low price of fuel oil at seaboard is understood to be the deterrent factor against further extension of natural gas lines to these markets at present. The development of these new reserves, as well as those developed by intensive drilling in old areas, resulted in the building up of large potential gas production and a lowering of rates paid to the producer. This, coupled with the country-wide tendency to lower the consumer rates of all public utilities, resulted in a general threat to reopen rate cases before various state commissions. The following paper embodies a report which I made on the filter-press treatment of slimes at the Liberty Bell mine, Telluride, Colo. At the time this report was submitted, the management deemed it wiser to defer the installation of so costly a plant as the one required, in the hope that some of the many investigators in the field might soon evolve a cheaper and more perfect method of slimes-treatment, and one better suited to the conditions at Telluride. The Liberty Bell ore consists essentially of quartz and clay, with iron pyrites disseminated through the quartz in very fine particles. There is considerable iron and manganese stain in some of the ore, the latter especially in the clays, which are sometimes quite black. Occasionally particles of galena, zincblende, gray copper and a few other minerals are seen, but they are comparatively rare, and not in sufficient quantity to affect considerations of treatment. Free gold is occasionally seen in the quartz, and one or two instances of mire silver have been observed. The milling-plant consists of an 80-stamp amalgamating mill which crushes through 20-mesh screens; 20 Wilfley concentrating tables, taking out, in iron sulphides, about 2 per cent. of the total ore crushed; and a cyanide plant consisting of two tiers of 33 ft. vats, five in each tier, fed by revolving pipe-die tributers. The slimes overflow from the upper settling tanks through gates with adjustable outlets, and thence to a large canvas-plant, which efects only a small saving. This slimes product, of which about 100 tons escape per day (or 38 per cent. of the total ore crushed), contains about 3 per cent. of dry solids. Of this approximately 93 per cent. will pass a 200-mesh screen. The slimes range in value between $3.90 and $4.87 per ton, the values being about equally distributed between gold and silver. They come, more and more respectfully as the years go by, yet to ever fewer persons is he known as Mr. Myers, but to more, eloquently, as Jack. Find better ways to run your mill, find happier means of co-ordinating your humanities or serving your professional society, and it&apos;s just like the man said about the mousetrap. A druggist&apos;s son, born in Wisconsin, May 24, 1889, reared on the Bible in Ohio and Indiana, and completing his education in Colorado, this now indisputably 24-carat Tennesseean has had a checkered career. Going West as a laborer at the tail end of the 1907 panic, he did not make his fortune but he did gain an understanding of labor that in later years endeared him to his men. Graduating in 1913 from Colorado School of Mines with the degree of E. Met. and a string of football letters (also earned the hard way, at tackle) he went to work in Butte & Superior, just at the beginning of the Golden Age of flotation.

MUCH has been written and said recently about the methods used and materials and equipment employed in building the long tubes that criss-cross a great part of the [ ] united States, like the pattern of a spider&apos;s web. This paper will discuss the fundamentals of design of these lines from the economic as well as the engineering view-point, pointing out the effect of the volumes transported, and the load factor at which they are operated, on the unit costs of transportation, as well as the effects on costs of the character of the fluids the lines are called upon to handle. Generally speaking, crude-oil pipe lines carry oil from the producing fields to the [ ] refineries. Sometimes part of the journey is by pipe line to a coastal point and tank ships are employed for the rest of the trip. NOT every organization on reaching the relatively ripe age of three score and fifteen can say with truth that its purpose and objects remain precisely the same as prescribed by its founding fathers. Of course, constancy of purpose may be something else than unalloyed virtue. It could merely reflect slavish worship of tradition, intellectual stagnation, or sheer inertia. On the other hand, it could establish the fact that the founders were men possessed of broad outlook, of prophetic vision, and of an acute sense of direction. In addition to charting the course with precision, the founders of the A.I.M.E. surely showed a flair for expressing clearly in a few words what others might say obscurely in many words. To quote verbatim from the "call" for the meeting, in 1871, the proposed organization was to have: "two great objectives: "First, the more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. "Second, the greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries." This text underwent some refining on several subsequent occasions but today the ultimate product, as set forth in the Constitution reads: "to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by all lawful means." The original call was dated "Wilkes-Barre, Pa., April, 1871," and was signed by Eckley B. Coxe, of Jeddo, and by R. P. Rothwell and Martin Coryell, both of Wilkes-Barre, each of the three subscribing himself as "mining engineer." The authors proceeded to explain briefly just how it was proposed to achieve these objectives: "In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed, as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries; and this object has been accomplished mainly through the medium of `Institutes,&apos; `Associations,&apos; or `Societies,&apos; composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the periodical publication of `essays&apos; or `papers&apos; communicated to such societies by their members.
