Data are presented which indicate that the saturation exponent, n, in the equation, R. = R100S-11, relating core resistivity, I:,. to the resistivity at 100 per cent saturation. R100. and to the saturation, S. may vary appreciably from the value of two which is usually assumed for this exponent when interpret ing well logs. Values ranging from one to two and one-half have been found on (.ore sample investigated to date. Attempts to correlate this saturation exponent with porosity or permeability of the core have not been successful. The saturation exponent is apparently not a function of the interfacial tension between the brine and the displacing fluid. Some evidence is given indicating that the resistance of the core is not a unique function of the saturation but depends upon the manner in which this saturation was achieved. Equipment and technique are discussed for measurement of resistivities in core plugs in which water saturation can be varied. lNTRODUCTION A number of investigations of the resistivity-saturation relationship for un-c~~nsolidated sands and consolidated (.ore samples have been reported in the literature. According to most of these: R. = R¹ººS², where R² = the resistivity of a formation at saturation S, and R¹ºº= the resistivity of the formation at 100 per cent water saturation. Much of this work was (lone on unconsolidated sands desaturated by gas or oil. Hen-clerson and Ynster worked exclusively with dynamic systems, flowing oil or gas through consolidated cores. There is some doubt as to how well this reproduces static reservoir conditions. Jakosky and Hopper³ onsidered also the case of consolidated core plugs, but the oil-water distribution in the emulsions which they used to saturate their cores is almost certainly different from that occurring in reservoirs. Recently Guyod quotes the results of some Russian work which indicates that n may vary from 1.7 to 4.3. No experimental details of this work are available. In connection with electric log interpretation it is important to know the value of the saturation exponent. For example, if in a given reservoir it is found that the resistivity is three time.; the resistivity observed when the reservoir is 100 pel. cent 'saturated with water, this fact would be interpreted as indicating a water saturation of 33 per cent if the saturation exponent were 1 and a water saturation of 6-1 per cent if the saturation exponent were 2.5. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD In the work to be described it was assumed that reservoir conditions are most nearly obtained when core plugs are desaturated by the capillary pressure technique referred to in numerous places in the literature, as for example. in Bruce and Welge's paper.' In this technique the core. saturated 100 per cent with brine, is placed in contact with a ceramic disc permeable to brine but not to the displacing medium for the displacement pressures used. Pres-ure is then applied to the displacing medium and brine forced out of the core through the ceramic disc. Fig. 1 shows the core plug in place in the cell in which resistivity and saturation measurements are made. Fig. 2 shows the schematic electrical diagram wed to make resistivity measurements on the core plug. A four-electrode type circuit is used, employing a Hewlett-Packard model 400A. AC vacnum tube voltmeter. The 60-cycle AC current througli the core is adjusted to 1 milliampere and measured by noting the voltage drop across the calibrated 100-ohm resistor. The vo1tages appearing at probes 1, 2, 3, and 4 are then successively measured. Voltage drops across the top, center, and bottom portions of the core are obtained by sublracting the voltages appearing at successive probes. This technique avoids any polarization or other high contact resistance phenomena which may develop at the current input electrodes. Resistances which may develop between the core and the probes, and which are small compared to the 1-megoam input impedance 01' the vacuum tube voltmeter will (obviously not affect the measurements allpreciably. Any very appreciable resistallces which may develop at any of the probe wires are detected and allowed for by inserting a 1-megohm resistor in series with the voltage measuring probe. If the probe resistance is actually zero, the new voltage measured after insertion of the I-megolim resistor will be approximately one-half of that previously measured. since the input impedance of the vacuum tube voltmeter is itself 1 megohm. If an! appreciable probe resistance has developed, the new voltage is found to be appreciably greater than one-half of the previously measured voltage. Such probe resistance; have been found to develop only occasionally and usually can be traced to poor connections betwern the core

L H. DUSCHAK gave an interesting talk at a recent meeting of the. San Francisco Section, based -011 experimental work with a variety of ores at the laborator of the Treadwell-Yukon Co., in Berkeley, Cal. He was of the opinion that the customary "cut and try" method of flotation testing was still in evidence and that the flotation process was more of an art than an exact science. Propounded theories have enabled investigators to' classify reagents as well as to suggest new ideas both in the metallic and nonmetallic fields, but the application of theory has riot as yet been able to solve many of the unknown factors in operation.

FLUORSPAR, a little known non-metallic mineral, referred to technically as fluorite, chemically as calcium fluoride, is a compound of calcium and fluorine in the ratio of one molecule of calcium to two of fluorine. By weight it is composed of 51.3 per cent of calcium and 48.7 per cent of fluorine. Its specific gravity is 3.2. It is brittle, has a hardness of four and can be easily scratched with a knife. It weighs about 200 Ib. per cubic foot and has a melting point of 1650" F. The color of fluorspar ranges from pure white and opaque white, according to its purity, to various hues of yellow, green, pink, lavender, blue and brown, to bluish black. Although the lumps have color, when ground the fluorspar becomes pure white. The reason for this is because the mineral usually carries no fixed pigment, the color being produced by the re- fraction of light rays within the crystal structure and small quantities of organic matter which readily oxidizes. It crystallizes in the isometric system with perfect octahedral cleavages.

MUCH progress has been made in recent years in the theory and practice of making stainless steel. By effective utilization of oxygen for decar-burization and more suitable alloying agents, it has been possible to attain consistent production of very low-carbon stainless steel. In order to facilitate economical production of stainless steels, the Electro Metallurgical Co. has carried out an extended experimental program that has clarified some of the complex interrelations of temperature and composition under decarburizing and reducing conditions. These results'-:' have been founded in large part on small experimental heats, and in order to confirm their validity and significance under commercial conditions, a survey of stainless steel melting practice has been made with the cooperation of stainless steel producers. Conditions required for decarburization and associated oxidation of chromium, manganese, and iron have been fairly well established in relation to the beneficial effect of the highest practicable temperature. The recovery of chromium and manganese from highly oxidized slags by reduction with silicon has been indicated with somewhat less precision and this study has shown significant deviation in large commercial heats from the small experimental heats. In spite of an unsatisfactory degree of accuracy in estimating the conditions affecting reduction of metallic values, it has been possible to calculate a slag weight in reasonably good agreement with the results observed in large heats. While there still is much to be learned about both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of stainless steel melting, this survey has indicated the manner by which the efficiency of the production process may be measured. Oxidation Period In order to establish practices for the recovery of chromium and manganese from the slag the amounts of these metals oxidized should be known. Moreover, since reduction of oxidized chromium and manganese must necessarily be accompanied by similar reduction of iron, knowledge of the total quantity of metallics oxidized is essential. The relations between carbon, chromium, and temperature under oxidizing conditions were developed by Hilty in 1948.' While it had been realized previously that retention of chromium in the metal during carbon oxidation is favored by high temperatures, the Hilty relation provided quantitative information useful for evaluating melting procedures. For example, it was shown that decarburization to moderate carbon levels can be achieved while retaining substantial amounts of chromium. However, in decarburizing to the low-carbon level necessary for producing 0.03 pct maximum carbon stainless steel, very little chromium remains in the bath at the temperatures generally employed. For this reason, Hilty, Healy, and Crafts' later projected an extension of the chromium-carbon relation to the low-chromium region. Although this chromium-carbon-temperature relation defined the composition of a chromium steel bath at the end of the oxidizing period, it did not provide a direct means for estimating the total amount of metallic oxidation occurring during decarburization of a stainless steel heat. This subject was investigated by Crafts and Rassbach³ and, later, by Hilty, Healy, and Crafts" who demonstrated that metallic oxidation is a function of the chromium content of the initial furnace charge, the minimum carbon content attained, and the temperature. It was further demonstrated from data on 1-ton heats that an empirical relationship exists between the ratio of chromium plus manganese to iron in the slag (S) to the corresponding ratio of these components present in the metal bath. The following expression was derived to permit the calculation of the amount of metallics oxidized during decarburization of a given charge: W-2000 (Cr1 + Mn1)-(Cr2 + Mn2) 1 100s/s+1-(Cr3 + Mn2) where W is the pounds of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized per ton of charge; Cr1, the percentage of chromium in the charge; Mn1, the percentage of manganese in the charge; Cr2, the percentage of chromium in the bath after oxidation; Mn2, the percentage of manganese in the bath after % Cr + % Mn oxidation; and S =%cr+ % Mn/%Fe in the slag after %Fe oxidation. In order to establish whether the slag ratios of commercial heats are consistent with those found in the experimental heats, the slag and metal analyses shown in Table I were evaluated. These data represent samples taken after the oxidation of two 1-ton and seven 15 to 25-ton heats of types 303, 304, and 304L stainless steel made in chromite, acid, and basic hearths. Fig. 1 illustrates that the results for the commercial heats correlate reasonably well with the relationship originally established for experimental 1-ton heats. During the past eight years, in trying to estimate world consumption of petroleum and related products, the authors have been unable to account for all the supplies available in any one year. There has remained at all times a balance, which at first was thought to represent almost entirely additions to stocks in foreign countries. But as this discrepancy continued year after year-over 148,000,000 bbl. in 1937—it became unreasonable to conclude that corresponding additional foreign storage capacity was continuously being made available. It became therefore clear that the balance in question was due to other causes than to additions to stocks. Last year Mr. A. G. White, Chief Economist of the Petroleum Economics Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, pointed out to one of the authors that an unknown and important factor in consumption of petroleum and related products is to be found in the requirements for military purposes in foreign countries. This paper is the result of Mr. White's timely suggestion. There are no reliable data available either on the storage capacity, and therefore oil stocks, or on the petroleum consumption for military purposes in foreign countries. This information is so closely related to national defense that its divulgation is forbidden. One can therefore but surmise as to these facilities and needs in line with the relative strength of the military land, air and sea forces of the various countries. The authors have assumed many of the component factors that go to make the tables herein presented, such as fuel consumption of fighting ships in relation to tonnage and horsepower, gasoline consumption of air fleets in relation to number of planes, and the consumption of petroleum products by mechanized armies; but in making these assumptions they have availed themselves of the advice and counsel of those whose wide experience in these questions make their views authoritative. THE following is the discussion of a paper, with the same title, by N. L. Alison, which appeared in our February issue: E. F. Tillson commented that while the fundamentals are well presented it would have been of interest to him to have had the author add some of his own experiences with fan installations. A. W. Hesse remarked concerning the use of the forward curved blade fan on the surface at a metal mine which has, ordinarily, but few airways, that the farther they are driven, the higher the resistance rises, and less air will be delivered, as the water gage will remain constant with a consequent loss in quantity. D. Harrington added that the metal mines do not or¬dinarily install fans until the mine is well developed, so changes are relatively slower after fan installation than at a coal mine.

This investigation establishes the effect of ferrite grain size resulting from various heat treatments on the transition temperature of a semikilled steel plate. Different austenitizing temperatures and various cooling rates were used. The ductile-brittle transition temperatures were determined by the Navy tear test and the keyhole Charpy test. THE data presented in this paper deal with quality characteristics of ship-plate material which were investigated in a research project sponsored at Battelle by the Bureau of Ships, Dept. of the Navy. Specifically, the object of this investigation was to establish the effect of ferritic grain size (resulting from various heat treatments) on the so-called transition temperature of ship-plate steel. Transition temperature is not a fixed property of steel. It is derived from a series of static or dynamic tests made at various temperatures and is qualified by specifying the type of test employed as well as the testing criteria. Because in earlier investigations of ship-plate quality1,2 the so-called Navy tear test and standard notched-bar tests (keyhole Charpy) proved to be useful in interpreting instances of brittle behavior of ship plate in service, these tests were used in the investigation reported in this paper. By definition,' in the Navy tear tests the highest temperature at which one or more of four specimens breaks with a brittle fracture (that is, when less than 50 pct of the fracture area has a dull fibrous texture) is termed "transition" temperature. In the Charpy tests, the 12 ft-lb level of energy absorption was used as a criterion indicating the "transition" temperature, although other levels of energy absorption were also used for comparison. Earlier work" on ship-plate steels indicated that the temperature at which ship plate is finished has a very significant effect on its notched-bar properties. Plates rolled in the laboratory, where the finishing temperature can be carefully controlled, showed a 16°F decrease in tear test transition temperature when the finishing temperature was lowered 200°F (from X" to Y°F). The same plates showed a drop of 10°F in the keyhole Charpy transition temperature from the same decrease in finishing temperature. Commercially finished plates' exhibit a similar trend. When the ferrite grain size of the hot-rolled laboratory plates was determined, a close relationship was found between the ferrite grain size and the notched-bar transition temperature." " he indicated relationship between grain size and transition temperature was in agreement with the findings on low carbon steels of Hodge, Manning, and Reichhold' despite the differences in composition of the steels. The cooling rate after rolling varies from one steel plant to another. This variation changes the micro-structure" and appears very likely to affect the notched-bar properties of the steel plates. In the investigation summarized in the present paper, heat treatments simulating finishing practices in the hot rolling of ship plate were used in order to vary the ferritic grain size. It is believed that the indicated relationship between grain size and transition temperatures of the ship-plate material will prove useful in estimating the effect of rolling temperature and of cooling rates from rolling temperatures on the notched-bar properties of semikilled steel plate. Material The semikilled steel plate used in this investigation was a ¾ in. hot-rolled plate from an open hearth heat. Other plates from this heat have been used on many other studies performed for the Ship Structure Committee," "," and the heat has been identified as project steel "A". The chemical composition of the plate1 was 0.25 pct C, 0.49 pct Mn, 0.011 pct P, 0.045 pct S, 0.04 pct Si, and 0.004 pct N.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910,) THE Altar district, State of Sonora, Mexico, is for the most part a desert with but little rain-fall and few running streams. On account of this scarcity of water it is necessary for the natives to " dry-wash" the placer-gravel, and the object of the present paper is to describe some of the more common Mexican dry-washing devices. My observations were confined to a property known as Las Palomas placers, 15 miles from the Gulf of California and about 150 miles south of the United States border; a brief description of which property may be of interest as illustrating what is, perhaps, a typical Sonora dry placer. It is said that as long as a century ago the Yaqui Indians discovered rich cement-gravel, known as argo masa, at Las Palomas, and that there has been a more or less steady production of gold from the property ever since. The argo masa is a fairly-coarse gravel, the pebbles being quite firmly held together with a lime cement. Gold is scattered through this cement in particles ranging from fine specks to pieces several grams in weight, and occasional large nuggets are encountered. The contents vary so widely that it is difficult to estimate the average value, but returns of from $10 to $50 per cubic yard are common, and it is doubtful if the Indians considered anything less than from $4 to $5 a yard as "pay dirt." This argo masa occurs in channels varying in thickness from a few inches to several feet, and in width up to 300 ft.. These channels are continuous and are probably ancient stream-beds. They are for the most part covered with an over-burden of a more recent gravel, varying from 30 to 50 ft. thick, and the fact that this over-burden contains values as high as $1.50 per cubic yard, and yet was not worked by the Indians, shows that their idea of what constituted pay-ground was high.

A company must have an organized approach to effectively sort through the profusion of available software and hardware and find the programs and equipment which fit defined needs. The selection process must build a complete compatible system which includes hardware and software. The methodology presented in this paper helps identify some of the more important considerations. The steps needed for an organized approach to software/hardware selection are: •All involved staff should contribute to an assessment of current computer capabilities and projection of future needs. •Alternatives are analyzed to determine what software and hardware is available and how selections may possibly be merged into the existing computer system. The evaluation process focuses on details of program capability and hardware compatibility. Analysis must be done to determine how closely individual programs fit the established requirements. The final decision is often a balance of needs between program capabilities and hardware availability. Any programs selected must be able to run on existing and newly purchased hardware. Any additional hardware selected must be capable of meshing with the available computer system.

A New Ingersoll-Rand Turbo Blower The Ingersoll-Rand Co. has added to its Turbo Compressors and Blowers a low-pressure machine t o handle volumes from 3,000 to 35,000 cu. ft. per minute at from 1-2 ½ lb. These are particularly adapted to such service as foundry cupola blowing, atomizing oil for oil burners, supplying blast to heating and annealing furnaces of various kinds, blowing air for water-gas generators, pneumatic conveying and ventilating. They are of the single stage, double flow type and are furnished either electric motor, steam turbine or water wheel driven.

The mechanical properties of unidirectionally solidified A1(rich)-Mg and A1(rich)-Cu castings containing up to 15 wt pct solute have been determined with re -spect to the volume fraction of interdendritic eutectic. Pioperties were determined in the directions pumllel and Perpendicular to that of solidification; the volume fraction of eutectic was varied between the "as-cast" and equilibrizcm amounts by approperiate heat treatment following solidification. The principles of fiber strengthened composites and dispersion strengthened materials are adapted to explain the mechanical properties of these castings. It is generally accepted that castings often have inferior mechanical properties when con~pared to wrought products. However, there is little quantitative data available concerning the factors which make apparently sound castings weak and/or brittle. The relative ease and inexpensiveness of the casting process have always been attractive and, therefore, an understanding of the factors which contribute to the mechanical properties of castings would seem desirable. Such an understanding may lead to an improvement in the mechanical properties to an extent where castings would become competitive in applications where presently only wrought products are considered to have the requisite properties. Such an understanding could also improve the reliability of present cast products. Much of the recent research on castings has centered about determining the extent of segregation in cast alloys. Macrosegregation, particularly inverse segregation, has been studied in some detail 1-8 and a considerable understanding of microsegregation has been obtained.9'10 The effect of solidification rate on dendrite spacing and on the amount of interdendritic eutectic in binary alloys has been established, particularly for Al(rich)-Cu alloys.""0 However, the extension of these ideas to relate the amount of interdendritic eutectic, concentration gradients, micro-segregation, dendrite spacings, and so forth, to the rnechanical properties has been limited. Dean and spear" have related the mechanical properties of an Al-Si-Mg alloy, A356-T62, to the dendrite spacing and have shown that the mechanical properties improve with decreasing dendrite spacing. Passmore et al.12 have shown that annealing at high temperature improves the mechanical properties of Al(rich)-Cu al- loys and Archer and Kempf 13 have shown that an Al-1 pct Mg-1.75 pct Si alloy behaves in a similar manner. Ahearn and Quigley 14 have shown that high temperature homogenization also enhances the mechanical properties of an SAE 4330 steel. However, in the above investigations, no underlying reasons were suggested for the improvement in mechanical properties. The purpose of the present investigation is to relate the mechanical properties of castings to some of the solichfication variables and to derive some equations by which calculations of the mechanical properties may be attempted. In particular, the effect of the amount of interdendritic eutectic and the effect of stress direction with respect to that of solidification on the mechanical properties will be considered. The Al(rich)-Mg and Al(rich)-Cu binary alloy systems were chosen for study. The A1-Mg system was chosen because its constitutional relationships are such that large volunles of eutectic (up to 24 vol pct) may be obtained in the as-cast condition and then be completely dissolved by subsequent heat treatment at about 440°C. This allows a comprehensive study relating the mechanical properties of castings to the amount of interdendritic eutectic. Also the Al(rich)-Mg eutectic is almost a single phase 15 which should make the experimental results more amenable to theoretical interpretation and calculation. The A1-Cu system was chosen for study because of the large amount of related information available concerning segregation, dendrite spacing, and so forth. Unidirectionally solidified castings were used throughout the investigation so that the effect of solidification direction with respect to the direction of applied stress could be determined. THEORETICAL It is well known that upon solidification of binary alloy castings, the nonequilibrium amount of eutectic which forms is given by 10 where fe o is the weight fraction of eutectic, Cs is the solid solubility of solute at the eutectic temperature, k is the equilibrium partition coefficient, and C, is the average composition of the alloy. In the development of Eq. [I], it is assumed that the effects of inverse segregation and diffusion in the solid are negligible, and that no porosity is present. If the casting is homogenized at a high temperature for a long period of time, some (or all) of the eutectic is dissolved and the amount of eutectic for this "equilibrium" condition may be calculated directly from the constitutional diagram. INTRODUCTION The Bullmoose Coal Project is part of a major development in northeastern British Columbia which comprises a new rail line, a new townsite, powerline, highway, the upgrading of the Canadian National Railway's main line, a new coal port at Prince Rupert and two new coal mines, the Bullmoose mine and the Quintette mine. The total investment by all parties is estimated to be in excess of $2.6 billion and made up approximately as follows : [Table No. 1 $ Millions - Quintette Coal Limited 950 Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc. 275 Canadian National Railway Company 800 6 British Columbia Railway Company Port at Prince Rupert 280 Townsite, Roads 6- Power ] The new infrastructure is intended to serve not only the Bullmoose and Quintette coal projects but also eventually a number of other coal properties in northeastern British Columbia. The Bullmoose project is structured on a joint venture basis as follows : [Table No. 2 Teck Corporation 51% Lornex Mining Corporation Ltd. 39% Nissho Iwai Coal Development 1 0% (Canada) Ltd. -- 100% ] The mine has a capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of clean coal per year. In the initial years 1.7 million tonnes will be metallurgical coal and 0.6 million tonnes thermal coal. After the first three years of operations the annual production of metallurgical coal will increase to an average of approximately 2.1 million tonnes and the production of thermal coal will decrease to an average of approximately 0.2 million tonnes. At this level of 2.3 million tonnes annual production, the Bullmoose mine has sufficient reserves for at least 26 years of production. History Brameda Resources Ltd. commenced coal exploration in the Bullmoose-Sukunka area in 1969. Teck obtained an option on the Bullmoose coal licences in 1970 and started surface exploration and diamond drilling in 1971. Teck earned a 50% interest in the property, and thereafter expenses were jointly financed by Teck and Brameda. In 1981 Brameda merged with Teck making Teck the sole owner. The initial phase of the exploration program, which was completed in 1975, included 7,200 meters of diamond drilling in 35 holes. During 1976 and 1977, detailed exploration and test work were carried out on the South Fork and West Fork areas where multiple seams close to surfaces indicated the potential for large tonnages of strippable coal. In those two years, work included road construction, detailed mapping and trenching to outline the coal seam traces at the surface, 6,300 meters of diamond drilling in 80 holes, and 300 meters of underground bulk sampling from seven adits. Washability tests and analysis work were carried out on the drill cores and adit samples, and pilot plant washability studies were undertaken. In 1978 and 1979 Teck engineers prepared open pit mining plans and production schedules and Kaiser Engineering was retained to prepare a layout of the plant preparation facility. A feasibility study prepared by Teck's engineering group in January 1982 was the base document used by the Lenders in assessing the technical and economic viability of the project. Property Location The property lies some 650 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, and 87 kilometers south by road from the village of Chetwynd. The Sukunka property (British Petroleum) adjoins to the north, the Mount Spieker property (Ranger Oil Option) adjoins to the east, and the Quintette property is located to the southeast.

Coils of pure iron and iron-carbon alloy wire (0.05 to 0.80 pct C) and sufficient sulfur to saturate the solid phase were equilibrated in evacuated or argon filled tubes. After rapid cooling, and removal of the outside nonmetallic layer, the wires were analyzed for carbon and sulfur and the data used to construct an Fe-S binary and isotherms of the Fe-C-S ternary in the range 1149° to 1427°C. THE solid solubility of sulfur in steel is of interest in connection with such phenomena as hot shortness, burning, and so forth. "Burning," the more or less permanent damage that some steels suffer when heated for forging or rolling, has been shown to be related closely to the behavior of sulfur and less closely to carbon and oxygen.' Attempts to interpret burning phenomena in steels fail because of lack of data on the Fe-C-S and the more complex systems in this family. Rosenqvist and Dunicz 2 and Turkdogan, Ignatowicz, and pearson3 have largely elucidated the Fe-S diagram in the region of interest but no information on the Fe-C-S diagram in this region appears to be available in the literature. This paper deals with the elucidation of the Fe-C-S diagram in these interesting ranges. The method employed is different from those used by previous workers2'3 on the Fe-S system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Pure iron wires (Ferrovac E) or iron carbon alloy wires of 1 mm in diam were cleaned with acid and acetone, coiled, and placed in silica tubes (7 mm OD and 5 mm ID) previously closed at one end. Enough sulfur was added to assure saturation of the solid iron phase. The filled tubes were either simply evacuated and sealed, or filled with argon at a reduced pressure and sealed. The argon was required at the higher temperatures to prevent collapse of the tubes. The filled and sealed tubes were placed in the middle uniform temperature zone of a Globar tube furnace and equilibrated at temperatures ranging from 2100°F (1149°C) to 2720°F (1493°C). After equilibration the tubes were removed from the furnace and quenched in air or water, the form of quenching being found to have no effect on the results. The tubes were broken open and the coils were placed in a 1 : 1 HC1 solution to remove the sulfide-rich layer. The coils were then cut into small pieces and analyzed for sulfur and carbon. In the early stages of the investigation different equilibration times ranging up to 17 hr were tried and the cores of the wires were analyzed to test for saturation. One hour appeared to be sufficient to reach maximum sulfur content at 1454°C and 2 hr sufficient at 1149°C. The practice adopted was to use at least 3 hr at the higher temperatures and at least 5 hr at the lower temperatures. The iron-carbon alloy wires used were made by carburizing pure iron wire with carbon monoxide gas in a one inch diameter ceramic tube at about 1204°C. Differing carbon contents were obtained by allowing fairly large coils to react with the gas for varying lengths of time at a flow rate of 800 cc per min. The reacting times ranged from 15 min to 4 hr depending upon the amount of carbon desired. The furnaces used were controlled by means of Leeds and Northrup Speedomax Type H instruments with D.A.T. Control attachment. Thermocouples were calibrated against the melting points of gold and copper. The temperatures recorded appear to be accurate within i2.7OC. It takes the sands of the earth and melts them-now into glass, now into silver, minium or other lead or some substance useful to the artist or physician. By fire, minerals are disintegrated and copper produced; in fire is iron born and by fire is it subdued; by fire, gold is purified; by fire, stones are burned for the binding together of the walls of houses.... Fire is the immeasurable, uncontrollable element, concerning which it is hard to say whether it consumes more or produces more." Thus wrote Pliny in his "Natural History," that great collection of fact and error which constitutes the principal contemporary description of Roman technology and which until the seventeenth century was the authority most often quoted and requoted by those who wrote on metals, as on many other subjects.

(New York Meeting. February, 1913.) For a number of years many attempts have been made to use thermit in order to do away with piping in ingots. Some of these attempts were successful, while others did not give the expected results. Nearly every plant had its own method of using the thermit, and no special care was taken to study, the results or to find the causes for lack of success. Formerly the principle of the process was to decrease the piping by introducing a can filled with thermit, attached to an iron rod, into the head of the ingot directly after it bad been poured. In this case the thermit reaction took place in the upper part of the ingot, and it was thought that through the heat produced the head would keep liquid longer and piping thus be reduced. In other words, the aim was to keep the head of the ingot open by making use of the heat of the thermit reaction, which would thereby give the gases in the steel sufficient time to escape. This result can be attained by the application of a large enough quantity of thermit, but it would not be economical in general practice, and could only be used for high-grade material. Many steel-makers abroad and in this country have had this experience. The Th. Goldschmidt A. G., Germany, has, therefore, made a special study of this question with the co-operation of a well-known steel company, and has worked out a new method for. the application of thermit for this purpose. The results obtained have been most satisfactory and reliable, and this- process is now used in Germany on a large scale in many prominent steel-works.

The stoichiometry ranges ofNiOl+y and LiFe,O,-d were established by high-temperatwe electrochemical meas7rements in a stabilized-zirconia electrolyte cell. The results were consistent with doubly ionized cation vacancies in NiO,+y and interstitial lithium or iron ions in . The defect structure of the ternary ferrite was derived from the consideration of equilibration with respect to oxygen between the solid and the gas phase. The absolute magnitudes of defect concentrations were calculated. Pavtial molar enthalpies of oxygen in the compounds were calculated and interpreted in terms of the enthalpy of defect formation in these crystals. NICKEL oxide (NiO,,?) is a metal-deficient, p-type, extrinsic semiconductor whose properties are consistent with a structural model based on the presence of cation vacancies as the predominant ionic defect at sufficiently high temperatures and oxygen activities. A survey of previously reported conductivity studies and the presentation of some more recent conductivity measurements will be given in a later paper.' The absolute magnitude of the equilibrium vacancy concentration in NiO has been reported from combined conductivity and thermogravimetric data of ' However, disagreement exists concerning the state of ionization of the nickel vacancies in NiO. Some authors3-' have proposed that the predominant defects in NiO are singly ionized nickel vacancies and positive holes (h') formed by the reaction where, accorhng to the notation of Kroger and Vink,6'7 Oq represents an oxygen ion on its normal lattice site. Other authors"27E have proposed that doubly ionized nickel vacancies (V{i ) and positive holes are predominant and are formed by the reaction One purpose of the present investigation was to establish the nature of the predominant defect in NiO,+? as well as its equilibrium concentration and thermo-dynamic properties at elevated temperatures and known oxygen activities. To accomplish this purpose, the coulometric titration of oxygen into and out of NiO was accomplished using a galvanic cell involving the calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte. The ternary oxide, lithium ferrite (LiFe50,-6) is ferromagnetic and has the inverse spinel structure LiFe,O,-d Thus, in the ideal stoichiometric XY204 lattice, Fe3 ions occupy one-eighth of the tetrahedral (A) sites, and i' and Fe3' ions share at random one-half of the octahedral (B) sites within the fcc sublattice of oxygen ions.g The structure and thermodynamics of the spinel structures have been comprehensively decribed.'-' A recent compilation of literature for lithium ferrite is also available. 15 Oxygen-excess LiFe50sis not expected to exist because both i' and 17e3& ions are in their highest normal valency states (positive hole formation is not favorable). As will be discussed, equilibration of the ferrite crystal with oxygen of a surrounding gaseous phase will result in the introduction of equilibrium concentrations of ionic and electronic defects. In the Results and Discussion section a defect model for LiFe50,-d is proposed. This defect model is tested by high-temperature coulometric titration experiments. EXPERIMENT The oxygen activities in nonstoichiometric NiOl+, (and also LiFe,O,-d) were measured by means of coulometric titration with the high-temperature galvanic cell The critical characteristic of a suitable experimental cell is the complete isolation of the phase to be investigated in a minimum sized chamber which is free from extraneous sources and sinks for oxygen (leakage). Then oxygen is only admitted to the chamber or removed from it in known amounts by coulometric titration, which involves the passage of oxygen ions through the solid electrolyte with electrochemical oxidation and reduction reactions at the platinum contacts to the electrolyte. The experimental cell is shown in Fig. 1. The cap of the cell was the tip from a closed-end alumina tube, which was found to be leak-free from a helium leak-detector test. This alumina cap was about 1.2 cm OD and about 1.5 cm high. A Zircoa calcia-stabilized zirconia tablet (crucible lid) of 1.5 cm diam and 0.3 cm thickness served as the solid electrolyte. A Pyrex ring of about 0.1 cm thickness was placed between the electrolyte and the cap. The electrolyte tablet was painted with platinum paste on the entire outer face and on that part of the inner face which would be within the enclosure; these electrodes were further prepared by heating in air at 1000°C for 2 hr. Nickel oxide powder, listed as 99.999 pct pure, was purchased from Leico Industries, Inc. Pills of the NiO were cold-pressed and sintered at 1050°C for 3 hr in a platinum crucible. Mineral wool is a term applied to man-made fibers of silicate glass with useful properties resulting from their fibrous nature. In contrast with crystalline fibrous minerals such as asbestos, mineral wool fibers are amorphous, solid filaments produced by drawing from molten liquid and subsequent cooling. Chemically they are silicate glass with varying percentages of metallic oxides, especially those of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, and in glass wool, sodium, potassium and boron. Other elements such as manganese, titanium, sulfur, etc., result from their presence in the raw materials used and are not purposely added. In the United States, mineral wool is a generic term and may be applied to rock, slag or glass wool. In Europe, glass silk and silicate cotton are products in the same category, but the term mineral wool is less commonly used. Current usage is to ignore the actual source and to differentiate products on a composition basis; thus rock and slag wools have about 35-45 pct of silica, while glass wool has 54 to 60 pct. Much mineral wool of slag origin is called "rock wool," and this practice is increasing, although wool made of slag from lead or copper refining is often referred to as "lead slag wool." Its greenish-gray to greenish-black dark color, due to 5-25 pct Fe (reported as FeO), distinguishes it from "white" wools made from iron, blast furnace slag containing only 1-2 pct FeO or Fe203. Most mineral wool is used for thermal insulation against heat and cold; sound absorption and isolation are probably the next most important uses. Both its thermal and acoustic values result primarily from the physical structure of the heterogeneous mixture of fibers and air which is the form in which the fibers are first obtained and handled. For this reason, within fairly wide limits, differences in chemical composition are relatively unimportant, and for most conventional applications all types are competitive in properties and value. Mineral wool intended for extreme conditions of high temperature, acid resistance and special purposes must have a chemical composition which will insure the desired properties. This may differ greatly from that of ordinary wools; for example one product approximately 98 pct Si02 and another consisting of 50 pct A1203 and 50 pct Si02 are produced and sold for high temperature service up to 2000°F or more. These are considerably more expensive to manufacture and their cost limits their use. Historical The manufacture of mineral wool consists fundamentally of a process which subjects molten material to shear and/or tensile forces that draw them into fibers. The liquids are cooled at a rate which solidifies them quickly. As a solid glass they are technically super-cooled liquids since they have no true melting point. The drawing out of glass into thin rods, filaments and tubes was known from very early times, and present day continuous production of glass filament for textiles was evolved gradually by adapting hand methods to automatic machinery.
