THE viscosity of the oil in the reservoir is one of the properties that influence its movement through the sand to producing wells. Measurements of viscosity, therefore, are pertinent to problems associated with well behavior and with the estimation of recoveries, and afford an indirect means for partial evaluation of various methods of controlling reservoir behavior. The effect of dissolved gases on the viscosity of crude oil has been determined,1,2 but no data have been published on the viscosity of repre-sentative samples of reservoir oils. This paper describes a simple instrument that has been used to determine the viscosities of a number of subsurface oil samples at the temperatures and pressures existing in the reservoirs, and presents the results of the determinations for typical fields.

The OPEC oil embargo and the subsequent higher prices for oil have drawn public attention to the critical problems associated with security of supply of oil and other key industrial materials, especially nonfuel minerals. This concern has stimulated the interest of decisionmakers in analyzing policy options to cope with the emergency situations resulting from a sudden foreign- induced supply interruption or a cartel price increase. Several policy options are available to counteract foreign-initiated embargoes or cartel price actions. The type of response will differ depending on the commodity action intiated. A mathematical model that measures the impact of foreign-induced commodity actions on the domestic economy is formulated. The paper also presents a computer method that can be used to determine the optimum policy response to counteract such actions.

The Museum is open daily from 9 am. until 5 p.m., and special arrangements will be made for the admission of a large party in the evening. The exhibition covers all phases of industrial and general safety, and also the important questions of sanitation and hygiene.

THE nature of a collector-coated mineral surface has been the subject of some experimentation and much speculation. Various aspects of the problem have been isolated and studied; it is probable, however, that there exist aspects as yet unrecognized, which are needed for a complete description of the system. The recognized elements of the problem are: 1-The nature of the chemical units comprising the film and the nature of the forces holding these chemical units to the mineral surface; 2-The orientation of the chemical units at the surface; and 3-The disposition of the collector units at the mineral surface. This report touches upon all three aspects of the broad problem; it deals, however, with a new and heretofore unrecognized element-the mobility of the collector units in the two dimensions of the solid-liquid interface.

Computation of reserve tonnages, stripping ratios, and grade of ore has long been a revolting aspect of the young mining engineer's job. Weeks at the desk calculator may turn into months before a single job is completed. Then many additional hours are necessary to check the calculations. During the last decade, computing machines have been widely publicized as instruments which will accomplish fantastic feats. Tales of their magical qualities have overshadowed their most basic characteristics-that of being a labor-saving device. Prior to a discussion of the electronic calculator's use on a mining problem, it may be well to point out that these machines are neither magic nor will they replace the judgment of an experienced engineer. In short, the "mighty morons," as the computors are sometimes called, are excellent labor savers but must be used correctly. They are not a substitute for thinking.

In this Monograph are presented operating data, operating costs, plant descriptions, and detailed flowsheets of twenty seven different cyanidation plants around the world. Twenty three of these are gold producers and four are primarily silver producers. With one exception, (Pueblo Viejo scheduled to start up in late 1974), all of the plants are operating at the time of this writing. Selection of operations was based on metallurgy and were grouped into free milling lode ores, other free milling ores, ores requiring sulfide flotation in addition to cyanidation, ores requiring roasting, telluride ores, South African ores, and silver ores. Each of the plants described illustrates some unique form of cyanidation metallurgy. It is the hope of the authors that publication of this Monograph will be an aid to metallurgists in bringing new and successful cyanidation ventures into operation.

A. J. Goldak and J. Gordon Parr (U)iuersity of Alberta) —Margolin and Ence's paper reached us only a few days after we had submitted a paper on the structure of Ti2Cu to the AIME. Here, however, we only wish to point out an error in the paper (page 321): "Karlsson has reported the crystal structure of the first intermediate phase occurring in the Ti-rich portion of the Ti-Cu system to be face-centered tetragonal." Karlsson actually reported the structure of Ti3Cu (i.e., "the first intermediate phase") to be primitive tetragonal with four atoms per lattice point: Cu at 0, 0, 0; and Ti at 1/2, 1/2, 0; 0, 1/2, 1/2; and 1/2, 0, 1/2. Thus, Karlsson suggests a primitive lattice with an ordered arrangement of atoms located at corners and face-centers: Ence and Margolin suggest a random body-centered tetragonal structure—-with which our results agree. E. Ence and H. Margolin (authors' reply)— We do not agree that Karlsson has not reported the structure of Ti3Cu as face-centered tetragonal. The fact that Cu atoms are located at the corners and titanium at the face-centers does not indicate that the lattice is not face-centered. We are pleased that the discussers' results agree with our own.

Manganese silver ores are well known to be refractory toward cyanidation. Roasting and sulfurous acid pre-leaching have been suggested for improving their amenability. This paper describes the development and implementation of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process for retreatment of manganese silver tailings at Tonopah, Nevada. The history of the material is summarized and the mineralogy is described. A brief review of an earlier application of sulfurous acid pre-leaching of a manganese silver ore is presented.

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95,955 mt (105,770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/mt (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper, 1.10 % lead and 11.06 % zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1 Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89 % copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) gold. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6 Mmt (1.76 million st). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

Outcrops of coal have been discovered in many localities in the Philippine archipelago, and practically all of the larger islands contain deposits of this mineral. Very little prospecting has been done to determine the value of the various cod-bearing areas, but so far as known, the largest and most promising fields are found: (1) in northern Cebu; (2) in the small island of Batan, a part of the province of Albay in southeastern Luzon; (3) in the somewhat larger island of Polillo, off the east coast of Luzon, and (4) in southern Mindoro, near the small coast town of Bulalacao. Northern Panny, south-central Cebu, and various localities in southern Luzon, Masbate, Negros, and Mindanao also afford evidences of the existence of coal-beds, the extent and value of which have not yet been proved. The general position of these islands and districts is shown on the map of a portion of the Philippine Islands, Fig. 1. Some of these coal-fields have been known for many years (coal was discovered in Cebu in 1827 and in Batan in 1842),'

The Engineering Council met on October 11 in the rooms of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Engineering Societies Building, New York. The Rules Committee submitted a draft of rules for the admission of other societies to the Council and progress was made in their consideration. The Committee on Public Affairs reported on a number of requests that the Council support pending or proposed legislation. Remedial laws intended to promote hydro-electric development were favored and Council voted to offer its cooperation to the United States Chamber of Commerce which is interesting itself in this matter. A movement to coordinate, unify and strengthen the work of various engineering committees cooperating with the federal authorities at Washington was favorably considered. Messrs. H. W. The death of Josephus Flavius Holloway, for twenty-one years an active and beloved member, and twice a Vice-President, of the Institute, cannot be allowed to pass without some expression on the part of his brethren of mingled grief and gratitude—grief that we have lost his genial and inspiring presence ; gratitude that we have been privileged to know one who lived " To make the world within his reach Somewhat the better for his being, And gladder for his human speech." The variety of copper-ore to which these notes refer is cornparatively rare, and, so far as I am aware, has not been recorded hitherto as occurring in Ontario. Moreover, the rocks of this locality differ so much in nature and mode of occurrence from the orebearing rocks of the western United States, that a description of them may be interesting. A line drawn upon a map of the region of the great lakes from the mouth of the Severn river at the Southern end of Georgian Bay, following the Canadian shore northwestward, and leaving Manitoulin island to the south, will describe the boundary between the Archaean rocks lying north of it and the Silurian rocks southward.

In the maintenance of rubber-tired mining equipment, tires may well represent the single greatest problem. Using a 50-ton truck as an example, engine upkeep averages about 8% of the machine's total yearly operating cost, while tires average a whopping 20%. In fact, depending upon such factors as job layout, conditions, and whether it is maintenance or production people who run the job, tire costs can climb to as high as 50% of the truck's total operating expense. Similar costs apply to other earthmoving equipment such as tractor-scrapers and front end loaders. While operators must resign themselves to "normal" tire life and wear, there are many corrective steps that can be taken to fight the "abnormal."

The House Committee of the Engineering Societies Building has lent to he members of the three welfare committees a room on the ground floor of the building where they can carry on some of their war activities. Two sewing machines and two knitting machines are installed there and ladies are invited to sew for the Foreign War Relief Committee and knit for the Emergency Committee, which is working for the 27th Engineers, a special mining regiment. The Emergency Committee, Mrs. H. Norman Spicer, Chairman, reports the formation of a committed of 21 members. The organization meeting was held March 7, and plans were made for future activities as follows: A letter was read from Mr. Ingalls asking for 72 sweaters, 72 helmets, 66 pairs of wristlets as well as 772 pairs of socks, 272 being for immediate delivery. To meet this request it was decided to secure the helmets and wristlets from the Navy League, and to undertake the making of the sweaters and socks ourselves. Accordingly Mrs. H. N. Spicer and Mrs. J. H. Devereux were empowered to buy wool in sufficient quantities, and woven material for the 72 sweaters, sending the bills to Mr. Ingalls, who had guaranteed the money from the Engineering and Mining Journal. This was attended to promptly, and the materials were ready for distribution to the committee on March 13. After considerable difficulty, knitting machines for the socks were discovered and the agent came to demonstrate them. Mrs. Spicer gave one to the Committee and Mr. Ingalls has guaranteed the money to buy two when the manufacturers can deliver them. Up to April 6, 130 pairs of socks, machine and hand-knitted, have been handed in-also 68 sweaters, 80 helmets and 90 pairs of wristlets. It has been calculated that it needs five women knitting behind each man at the front to keep him continuously supplied with knitted garments.
