Traditional mine planning concepts are discussed and suggestions for improvement through use of the developed model are proposed. The approach developed in this paper allows optimal planning of the complete mining-concentrating-refining system over the entire planning horizon and permits the system to dictate how and when to process a block of material, i. e., a dynamic cutoff.

IN 1955, before planning an accelerated stripping program, Chino Mines Div. began an engineering study to improve data for estimating truck haulage costs for any future haulage layout. The study aimed to develop: 1) significant unit costs, 2) a method of estimating travel time from which truck needs and future stripping rate could be determined, and 3) yardsticks of performance to measure haulage efficiencies. It was suggested that to provide significant unit costs, expense accounts should offer management two types of cost control information-unit cost yardsticks with which monthly unit costs could be compared and unit costs for estimating future expenses for any haulage layout.

Colorado School of Mines The, forty-first annual commencement exercises of the Colorado School of Mines were .held at Golden, Colo., on Friday, May 28, 1915. Dr. Lucien I. Blake delivered an address on Epochs in Science. The degree of Engineer of Mines was conferred upon 30 men, and the degree of Master of Science on one man. At the recent annual meeting of the Mining Engineering Society, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, officers were elected as follows: President, K. M. Sully; Vice-President and Treasurer, D. M. McRae; Secretary, H. Solakian. The Student Auxiliary Society of the A. I. M. E. at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan., has elected officers as follows for the year 1915-16: President, Harry E. Crum; Vice-President, Leland E. Fiske; Secretary and Treasurer, Ben A. Sweeney.

Continuous vacuum disk filters are increasingly being used to filter refuse from the fine-coal washing circuits as it becomes important to close the water circuits and eliminate sludge holding ponds. This paper discusses our past experience filtering refuse, effects of solids concentration in the filter feed, use of polymer flocculation aids, effect of flocculation devices, and effects of particle size and ash content on the filtration rate. Detailed tests were performed on existing installations utilizing coal refuse filters to determine optimum flocculant dosage, solids concentration, and disk rotation speed to form a dischargeable cake. Information was also obtained showing effect of flocculant addition on the moisture of the filter cake.

Members of these Societies have also been invited to contribute to the discussion of the various papers to be presented at the meeting, a revised list of which appears in the notes of the Iron and Steel Committee on p. vi. Modern open-pit mining can be described as a capital-, labor-and energy-intensive, large-scale, mechanized, and highly repetitive bulk material preparation and handling operation, with emphasis on the word "mechanized." In hard rock, this generally means shovels loading blasted materials into haulage units for transport to processing plants, stockpiles, or waste dumps. Mine management deals with several primary concerns on a daily basis; e.g.: Will any serious accidents and labor problems occur today, and will the tonnage targets be met considering the physical condition of the equipment? The latter subject will be discussed from a maintenance perspective. A successful, progressive heavy equipment maintenance program that protects company assets involves many elements. They include: •Proper equipment selection and procurement •Well-trained and motivated workforce •Good shop facilities •Preventive maintenance (PM) program •Warehouse support •Operations-maintenance department cooperation •Meaningful paperwork

There were present eleven Directors, the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests. The Secretary, Bradley Stoughton, was appointed the representative of the Institute on the Board of. Directors of the American Bureau of Welding. A communication from a member of the Institute regarding simplified spelling was laid on the table. The following appropriations were made for the year. 1919: $250 to the Institute of Metals Division, $250 to the St. Louis Section, $100 to the Columbia Section. An invitation was received from the Western Society of Engineers to the Institute to use the facilities of that society during the A. I. M. E. Meeting in Chicago. The Bulletin of the Institute was presented to the French Congress of Engineers. There were elected twenty-eight members, eighteen associates, and three junior associates. The status of one member was changed from junior associate to associate. Four members were reinstated. An extension of time was granted to one member for payment of dues. The dues of four members on active military duty were suspended. Dues were remitted of four members who have been paying over thirty years, and who are each over seventy years of age.
