All persons, actively engaged in your profession, must have a natural interest in the subject of weights and measures. All members of the engineering profession have to do with operations of weighing and measuring—some with measuring more than weighing, and some with weighing more than measuring—but all with both of these processes to a greater or less degree. Methods of weighing and measuring have improved constantly from the earliest times and have kept pace with the advance of other technical processes. It is, therefore, believed that you will be interested in a few remarks concerning some of the more recent advances in relation to the establishment of decimal standards of length and mass in this country. Before speaking of this, I will refer very briefly to some facts which may not be very generally known regarding our customary system of weights and measures. Although the yard is universally accepted as the unit of length, and the pound as the unit of mass, it is not generally understood, I believe, just in what respect the yard is the unit of length, or the pound the unit of mass. That is to say, it is not generally known in what degree these units have been legalized by Acts of congress. Doubtless, many of you are familiar with the facts which I will briefly recapitulate. The Constitution of the United States authorizes Congress to establish a system of weights, measures and coinage. The establishment of a system of coinage, as you know, was one of the first acts of the government, and the system then adopted is certainly one of the most perfect, if not the most perfect, that the world has yet seen. But, although Congress had the power to establish a system of weights and measures, it has never yet seen fit to exercise this power; that is to say, Congress has never yet

THERE are two general classes of problems in connection with electric furnaces. First, those relating to the best utilization of the electrical power inside the furnace; second, those connected with the bringing of the electrical power to the point where it is to be utilized. Referring particularly to the latter class of problems, many calculations have been made, covering a wide variety of furnaces, to check the electrical capacity and power factor found from test. The following analysis, made for the purpose of determining the maximum capacity and approximate performance of a new furnace, to operate at 160 volts on a 60-cycle circuit, may be of interest. The first characteristic necessary to determine is the inductance, since this is the factor that limits the amount of power which can be put into the furnace. The formation volume and the relative volume of the liquid Phase of mixtures of Condensate and gas from five different parts of a field in the Louisiana area have been established experimentally. These studies included gas-condensate ratios as high as 25.000 cu ft/bbl at pressures up to 5,000 psi. The gravities of the tank condensates were between 53.9° and 63.9° API. The compositions of the condensate and gas samples inves-ligated are presented in tabular form. The formation volume. the relative volume of the liquid phase. and the specific volume of the mixtures are available. A rough correlation of the formation volume as a function of pressure. temperature, and gas-condensate ratio has been presented. This correlation i-considered applicable only to the range of conditions covered in this investigation for systems of similar nature and com-position. INTRODUCTION Often a knowledge of the influence of temperature. Pres sure, and relative quantities of condensate and gas upon the volumetric behavior of fluid*. from a given field has been employed in estimating the Conditions existing in the reservoir. The early work of Beecher and Parkhurst' and the more rrcent Studies of the Dominguez' and San Joaqnin Valley Field;: are examples of experimental studies of this character. Correlation of the volumetric behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has Proved To be feasible' . at low gas-conden-sate ratios-; for fluids*. from a single geographic area. Progres 5 is being made in the Prediction of the volumetric behavior of distillate systems at high gas-condensate ratios and pressure.. However. the estimation of the retrograde". ' dew-point pressure still remains uncertain and probably can best be established by experiment. For this reason it appears of interest to make available experimental information about the volumetric behavior of mixtures of condensate and gas from five different part.; of a single field. This material shows a rough similarity to data for mixtures of condensate and gas from San Joaqnin ' Valley Fields. In the present paper. 110 attempt has been made to coordinate the available information on tbe volumetric behavior of fluids from condensate fields. It appears hopeful that progress can be realized by the utilization of recently developed equa-tions of state.!' However. the primary problem in any such correlation is the proper identification of the components and constituents of naturally occuring systems. Additional experimental information may be required to permit the determination of the values of the constants of the equation of state for References given at end of paper. SINCE the publication of Prof. J. W. Richards's paper on The Schumacher Briquetting Process,2 this process has been in operation on a practical .scale in two plants in the United States, and a few notes on the results obtained may he of interest. An experimental plant, consisting of a toggle press and a hydraulic press, was installed at Johnstown, Pa., together with the necessary bins and other equipment, and an attempt was made to briquette a mixture of Mahoning fines and blast, furnace flue dust, in a ratio of 7 parts of ore to 3 parts of dust. The results were unsatisfactory, in that the briquettes made were not hard enough to stand the severe handling to which they were subjected in the various transferences necessary between the press and the furnace. The trouble was clue to several causes: First, the mechanical arrangement of the plant, which did not lend itself to a proper hardening and loading of the briquettes into the cars. Second, the irregular composition of the flue dust, as to both its lime and its fine coke contents. Third, the variability of the moisture content of the ore, and its viscosity when wet. Fourth, the ratio of fine ore to flue dust; that is, it was attempted to bind in too large a quantity of fine ore for the small amount of flue dust used. The first trouble could be overcome, and has been improved upon in the plant as it stands to-day. The second trouble was important, because of the small amount of dust used as a binder, and might have been easily removed by mixing the flue dust of the different furnaces, which, however, was never done. The third difficulty was more serious, but could have been partly solved, had it been possible to meet this along with the fourth difficulty, by decreasing the percentage of ore in the briquettes. It was proposed to do this, but it seems that the problem at the works in question is, primarily, to prepare Mahoning fines for reduction in the blast furnace, and only secondarily to use up the flue dust, and a solution along this line did not seem to be interesting.

Stock piling-and by that I mean well-organized stock piling on a substantial scale-is almost as old as the hills themselves. It was back in early Biblical times, as recounted in the Book of Genesis, that Joseph was charged by Pharaoh with the responsibility of stock piling food during the seven years of plenty to guard against the seven subsequent years of famine that were revealed by the Pharaoh's dream. And this same policy of storing up food or materials to provide for future anticipated emergencies can be traced repeatedly down through the ages. So our own efforts are anything but new. Our modern concept of stock piling-the purchase and storage of strategic materials to assure supplies needed in time of some future war- stems from our experience in World War I. In 1920, the War Department was charged by Congress with the responsibility of procuring all War Department supplies and mobilizing industry in the event of another war. During the two decades that followed there were many authoritative studies made of our deficient mineral problem, all of which pointed out the urgent necessity of stock piling certain strategic materials as a reserve against future war. One such study, made in 1925 through the combined efforts of the Mining and Metallurgical Society and the AIME, was done at the ex- press request of the War Department. THE crystal laboratory, Dept. of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was confronted with the problem of obtaining a supply of optical grade calcium fluoride (CaF2) for use in growing synthetic CaFe2 crystals. A search of the known fluorspar deposits did not indicate that any quantity of optical spar could be obtained. Even the best material had to be sorted by hand to remove impurities. The process for growing CaF2 crystals developed by Professor D. C. Stockbarger of the Dept. of Physics, M.I.T., necessitates very pure feed materials. Exclusion of impurities is required, even in amounts detectable only spectrographically. The impurities occurred as minute inclusions of SiO2, BaSO4, CaCO3, FeS2, water or air. Crystals up to 4 in. in diam and weighing several pounds are made by the Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland. Since the time required to grow a 4-in. crystal is about one week, and since the cost of manufacture is high, removal of impurities by any concentration method appeared practical. The mineral engineering section of the Dept. of Metallurgy undertook to investigate the possibility of concentrating clear optical fluorspar, -4 mesh +10 mesh, from a feed containing over 99 pct CaF2. Various innovations of the known methods of concentration were considered, but in each case the minute amount of impurities associated with the crystal produced such extremely small differences

A new process for leaching oxidized copper ore (CuO) is presented. Its principle advantage is that it requires low cost raw materials. For large operations the only materials used are sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3). In those operations of medium size, sulfur, which is abundant in the North of Chile, is used. However the process may also be applied to small copper plants provided low cost sulfuric acid is available as a substitute for sulfur. That is, it may be applied to those small capacity plants where large additional installations for the regeneration of the leaching solution are not needed. The method is comprised of six stages, namely: Crushing, Leaching, Washing of the Solution, Precipitation, Regeneration of the Leaching Solution, and Fusion. A flow diagram for this process in a large or medium-sized plant is given. LEACHING This process requires hydrochloric acid as the leaching solution for treating copper ores. This is easily produced from sulfuric acid and sodium chloride as follows: A small excess of NaCl is advisable to avoid the presence of free sulfuric acid. The experiments reported here were performed with 36 grams of HC1 per liter of solution to obtain a free acidity equivalent to 50 gpl of H2SO4 (the usual leaching solution concentration). Hydrochloric acid leaching may be done by either of the usual methods; i.e. percolation or agitation. The method selected depends on the characteristics of the ore. No matter which method is chosen, low pressure air can be used either as an air lift for circulation of the solution, or for agitation of the pulp with "Pachuca" tanks. In either case, there are no problems with respect to oxidation. Leaching by agitation produces good recovery; but at times, the problem of high consumption of leaching solution or the overproduction of grinding slimes which interfere with contact between phases negates this advantage. The percolation method was used in this study. Percolation took place in four 15-liter containers, 11 1/2 in. diam. by 12 in. height, having hemispheric bottoms. Each container was fitted with a wooden bottom having 1/4 in- holes. The air lift was a 3/4 in. plastic tube 10 in. high. Air at 6 psi was supplied from a rotating laboratory compressor. 10 kg of ore were charged to the container and counter-current leaching was used. The leaching solutions were fed through the center pipe in order to use the ascending solutions to reject the air in the charge. The solution circulated through the air lift in order to facilitate the movement according to the increase in density produced by the reaction between the phases present. Specific observations made in this report cannot be generalized because the leaching characteristics are dependent on the nature of the ore used, the method of leaching, and the production of primary or secondary slimes while crushing or leaching.

Crack propagation in the region of a statically pressurized borehole is investigated to determine a role of the sustained borehole pressure following detonation in a blast. The case of a single-hole bench blast is reduced to a plate model, which is considered both theoretically and experimentally. Based on the principle of least work, it is hypothesized that the path of any crack in the plate will coincide with one of a family of maximum principal stress trajectories. These trajectories were computed, and critical experiments in glass, designed to test the effects of controlled crack origin and of changed trajectories from different loading configurations, confirm this hypothesis. It is concluded that under ideal conditions the crack path can be predicted and that cracks can be produced in the absence of either high-amplitude stresses or stress waves. Energy considerations for crack extension are discussed, and, based on the strain energy distribution, a relationship between hole burdens and spacings is revealed, a critical burden is demonstrated, and a maximum crater width is shown to exist.

It is well known that certain silicates such as the feldspars and beryl can be readily floated from quartz at a low pH value using a long chain cationic collector in the presence of a fluoride.1-3 However, the mechanism whereby the fluoride activates feldspars and beryl is not known. Indeed, only a few authors have even speculated about possible mechanisms.1,3,4 As a first approach to the problem, it is perhaps best to look closely at the interesting character of hydrofluoric acid and how it dissolves silica and silicic acid. Hydrofluoric acid, unlike hydrochloric acid, is a weak acid with a dissociation constant of about 3.53 x 10-4 at 25°C.5 The reason for the weak acidic character of HF lies in the very small size of the fluoride ion.6 The pKa value is 3.45 which means that at pH 3.45 half the HF is present in molecular form and half in ionic form. The anion present is probably HF2.-6 At pH values below the pKa value, molecular concentration increases rapidly at the expense of the HF2- anion. It is known that HF readily attacks glass, silicates, quartz and silicic acid. The equation usually cited pertaining to the first step in HF attack of silica is6-'

Occasionally it is interesting, and sometimes useful, to review the past for early references to our industry, and to learn of the trials and travail passed through before it arrived where it now is - and the results of such a review follow. With problems of diminishing ore grades and increasing cost of facilities, the mineral industry is acutely aware of the needs for improving beneficiation processes. Industry and universities are directing intensive technical effort to develop- ment of techniques with potential for using digital computers in automation and process analysis. The main problem of early attempts at on-line computer process control methods was that of economics. Now, with new advances in analysis and modeling making practical application economically important, it appears that minerals beneficiation is on the threshold of a significant jump in operating technology. In reviewing this work, particular note was taken of research and development applied to fundamental processes and the significant areas of effort where operations research techniques are used for process applications leading to the current state-of-the-art. Development of data automation and on-line control methods for process industries is deferred to the next section of this volume. This section deals with computer-facilitated mathematical-modeling development and reviews this work in conjunction with associated prior fundamental research leading to development of the methods. Flotation The 1960 state-of -the -art in flotation modeling was com- piled by Arbiter and Harris in the volume, 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation, edited by Fuerstenau1. Many workers in the field of flotation initiated their research through flotation models, and this effort has led to use of simulation and operations re search methods employing computer techniques to facilitate advance of this work. The flotation model of Imaizumi and Inoue, published with supporting data in 1962, was expanded in 1968 with the objective of developing a basis for process automation.2,3 The fundamental work of Woodburn and Loveday in 1965 has led to techniques applicable to flotation circuit design optimization.4 This analysis is described in this volume by Woodburn in conjunction with King, Buchalter, and Piper. The authors of this paper are to be commended for a clear exposition of a timely subject. However, some important conclusions, in addition to those presented in the paper, can be drawn from the results of their elaborate and rather complete numerical computations. First of all, the major part of the calculations presented in the paper are for semi-infinite slabs of oil shale (the authors designate this as Model I) and a question must be posed — Are these elaborate computations needed to arrive at realistic estimates of the shale oil displaced. Consider the model of Lauwerier* that corresponds to the authors Model I if thermal conduction parallel to the fracture be neglected. If one also neglects the finite (but relatively small) heat capacity of the material in the fracture, it is easily shown from Lauwerier's solution that the cumulative oil production would be:

THE introduction of the logarithmic sector method of quantitative spectrography by Scheibe and Neuhäusser in 1928, and the subsequent .modification and improvement of the method by Twyman and Simeon, would seem to have marked yet a further advance in quantitative spec-trum analysis and its industrial application, inasmuch as it offers a simple means of eliminating some of the uncertainties inherent in the older methods based upon mere visual comparison of line intensities. In their recent admirable review of the position and capabilities of industrial spectroscopy, Brownsdon and van Someren1 say: Ways and means of facilitating the comparison of line-intensities so as to give them numerical values are helpful, and of these a logarithmic sector rotating in front of the slit appears to he one of the most promising; . . . the success recently experienced by the author in using this method for the examination of steels and solutions of metallic salts prompted him ,to investigate its possible use in estimating the impurities commonly present in crude and refined tin. The results of this investigation are submitted in the present paper. Details of a number of spectrographic analyses of tin for various impurities have already been published. Thus, Schweitzer2 describes the spectrographic examination of tin for lead, bismuth and cadmium, and was able to distinguish between such atomic percentages as 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.30, 0.60, 1.20, 3.00 and 10.00. Negresco3 investigated the bismuth content of tin over a range of from 0.0005 to 35 per cent. Meggers, Kiess and Stimson4 compare spectrographic and chemical analyses of tin metal for copper, lead, iron, zinc, silver, nickel and bismuth. They stress also the value of spectrum analysis in the examination of tin used for boiler plugs, where the requirements that only minute quantities of impurities shall be present render the chemical analysis both tedious and difficult.

THE Institute met on Wednesday evening, May 22d, in the parlor of the Stanton House, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, President, in the chair. The President delivered an introductory address on the Brown Hematite Deposits of the Great Valley, after which the following papers were read and discussed : Note on the Result of an Experiment with the Wheeler Process of Combining Iron and Steel in the Head of a Rail, by W. E. C. Coxe, of Reading, Pa. On the Jenks Corundum Mine, Macon County, N. C., by Dr. R. W. Raymond, of New York City. On Wednesday afternoon, previous to the opening session, the members who had already arrived in Chattanooga, were taken by the Local Committee to the works of the Roane Iron Company, and Chattanooga Iron Company, and then to the top of Lookout Mountain, where, at the request of the members present, Dr. Hunt described the geological and geographical features of the Chattanooga region, with the magnificent panorama spread out before them as a map. On Thursday morning an excursion was made by steamboat down the Tennessee River as far as Shellmound. Here cars were taken to the coal mines of the Dade Coal Company, where the members were courteously received by Mr. E. B. Wells, the Superintendent. After a trip through the mines the party partook of a collation provided by the company. South Pittsburgh, on the Tennessee River, was next visited, where the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company have a large blast-furnace plant in the course of erection. After conducting the party through the works, shops, etc., Mr. James Bowron, the manager, entertained the members with graceful hospitality at dinner. The second session was held on Thursday evening for the transaction of business. The President, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, appointed Messrs. W. E. C. Coxe, R. H. Richards, and F. J. Slade, scrutineers, to examine the ballots for officers for the ensuing year.

Measurements of the electromotive force of the cell at 995°C have shown that the cell may be used to detennine the zinc content of molten Cu-Zn alloys to the nearest 0.05 wt pct. The cell is used for brass melts to which no ZnO is added intentionally, because essentially all oxygen in the Cu-Zn-O system is present in the form of ZnO. The cell is also used to detev,nine the thernodynamic activity of zinc for Cu-Zn al1oys of the brass composition range, from which the equilibrium partial pressure of zinc for such alloy may also be calculated. The electrochemical measurement of the concentration of the most active metal in other engneering- alloy systems by a similar technique is also considered. IN recent years there have been many studies concerning the direct electrochemical measurement of oxygen content in molten engineering metals.' These investigations employ galvanic cells in which the electrolytes are various solid mixed-oxides which conduct current by movement of oxide ion vacancies under the influence of an oxygen potential gradient. Similar cells have also been used to measure the thermodynamic properties of mixing of solid alloys,' one component of which has a much greater affinity for oxygen than the other component(s). One alloy system of obvious engineering importance comprised of two metals of greatly differing affinity for oxygen is copper-zinc. At the casting temperature of molten brasses, the zinc concentration is very difficult to control not only because its vapor pressure is very high, but also because of its high affinity for oxygen to form ZnO. Inasmuch as brass castings may be required to have a zinc concentration within very narrow limits, it would be advantageous for the brass industry to have a means for quickly measuring the zinc content in the molten alloy just prior to pouring. A calculation based on earlier thermodynamic studies of oxygen and zinc in dilute solution in binary Cu-O and CU-Z' alloys indicates that the oxygen concentration of molten 70 wt pct Cu-30 wt pct Zn brass must be much less than 1 ppm for the separate phase ZnO not to exist in the ternary Cu-Zn-O system. Thus it can be assumed that all molten brasses, both in the laboratory and in the foundry, are sufficiently saturated with oxygen for the separate phase ZnO to be present. In view of the foregoing reasons, the cell investigated at 995°C for the purpose of measuring the zinc concentration in molten copper-zinc alloys, particularly those of brass compositions. In this cell the left hand electrode is a reference electrode comprised of a mixture of the pure powders of nickel and nickel oxide, to which a platinum contact is made. The electrode of interest is a molten Cu-Zn alloy of unknown zinc concentration with a tantalum wire contact. The electrolyte is the commercially available (Zircoa) calcia stabilized zirconia. The ZnO in the Cu-Zn electrode compartment is not intentionally added, but is naturally present as a result of the infinitesimal amount of oxygen required for its formation in this alloy system. In cell [A] nickel oxide is reduced at the cathode where O= represents the electrolyte. At the anode dissolved zinc of the Cu-Zn alloy is oxidized to form ZnO(s) in its standard state Thus the overall reaction is for which the molar free energy change is where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), is the electromotive force of the cell in volts after correction for the Pt-Ta thermocouple, FOf (ZO) and AFF (NO) are the standard molar free energies of formation of the respective oxides, and a2n is the thermodynamic activity of zinc in the molten Cu-Zn alloy. The reference state of zinc in this case is taken to be the pure liquid. At constant temperature all the terms of Eq. [I] are constant except and azn Thus since all other participants in the electrochemical reaction are in their standard states, the change in the electromotive force of Cell [A] is represented only by a change of the thermodynamic activity of zinc at constant temperature. The zinc concentration is related to the activity by sampling the alloy for chemical analysis after cell measurements are taken. EXPERIMENTAL A typical cell construction is shown in Fig. 1. This and other experimental details were similar to that described earlier with the exception of some minor modifications which are detailed below.

This paper deals with work that has been carried on for over three years by the management and staff of the North Butte Mining Co. in an effort to standardize mining methods, to eliminate lost motion in the operating organization, and to improve the efficiency of the individual workman. Naturally, much of this work is an adaptation of ideas suggested by other mining operations or by practice in manufacturing and other productive industries. The studies, however, have developed some features that it is believed are new. Both new and adapted features are given in detail. The normal capacity of the North Butte mines is about 2000 tons per day. Hoisting is done principally through the Granite Mountain shaft, which is 3740 ft. (1140 m.) deep and equipped with an electric hoist capable of hoisting 200 tons per hour from a depth of 4000 ft. (1219 m.). The lowest stoping level is the 3400-ft. The Granite Mountain shaft is connected with the Speculator shaft, about 850 ft. (259 m.) south, and with the Gem, about 1150 ft. (350 m.) east, which are 3000 (914.4 m.) and 2000 ft. (609.6 m.) deep, respectively. These two shafts are equipped with reversible fans for ventilation. The Speculator has a steam hoist with a capacity of 150 tons per hour from the 3000-ft. level. The Granite Mountain shaft is concrete lined from the 1600-ft. to below the 3000-ft. level and gunited with cement from the 1600-ft. level to the surface. Sections of the Speculator shaft with a total combined length of 500 ft. (152.4 m.) are also concreted. There are approximately 36 miles (58 km.) of drifts and crosscuts in the mine, in which there are 15.2 miles (24.5 km.) of track. At normal capacity, about 75 stoping faces, 20 raises, and 30 sill development faces are working. Stoping is usually by the standard square-set method. Where the size of the oreshoot and character of the walls permit, the rill (or cut-and-fill) system is employed. A laboratory bench scale unit is described whereby finely divided chlorinatable residues are held for a short period by a restraining bed of a coarse-grained ore of comparable composition to permit 'flash' chlorination of the high surface area powder. Results on chlorinating a finely divicled titania residue using rutile sand as the restraining bed showed that 92 pct utilization of chlorine and equivalent conversion of TiO2 in the fine residue to Ticl4 were attained with a dust loss of about 3 to 4 pct and an equivalent amount of ch1om'nation of the titanium values in the restraining bed. THE chlorination of coarse grain titaniferous ores; i.e., 20 to 150 mesh sizes in fluidized beds is practiced commercially.' One effective method found for the chlorination of a very fine material in a fluidized bed is the "flash" chlorination technique.' By charging the finely divided charge material into the bottom of an established bed of optimum sized rutile, ilmenite, titanium beneficiate, or even an inert material such as sand, chlorination occurs before the dust can pass through the bed. The major requirement is that the bed be less chlorinatable than the charge. In this process, the charge consists of a finely divided (between one and 50 µ) titania residue obtained from a titaniferous ore beneficiation process. The charge is blended with a 20 pct wt basis addition of 20 to 60 .mesh size low volatile coke (to minimize hydrogen chloride formation) and fed to the bottom of the bed with the chlorine gas stream. A ball check device is used to permit entry of the charge and prevent the bed from discharging when the gas flow is cut off. The coarse pieces of coke serve to reduce compaction in the charge mixture and permit sat]sfactory feeding without plugging or jamming. Feed and gas rates are adjusted to provide for complete reaction of the charge material, with 90 to 95 pct chlorine efficiency, and maintain a gas flow in the range of 0.4 to 0.6 ft per sec. The equipment consisted of a 3-in. diam mullite tube enclosed in an electric furnace. A bow-shaped 3/4 in. Saran tube fed the charge from an air lock type of feed hopper (to prevent the escape of the chlorine gas into feed bin) to the bottom of the bed. The charge rate was set by providing a small awiliary hopper below the feed hopper where a weighed portion of the charge could be discharged in a specified time interval into the main chlorine stream. The chlorine rate was measured by a flowmeter. The reaction tube was filled with a bed of Australian rutile ore, this restraining bed serving two purposes; i.e., it rapidly heated the fresh charge to the reaction temperature and retained the particles in the bed for a sufficient time for selective chlorination to proceed. Due to the fine particle size and open, porous structure of the charge, this reaction was almost instantaneous, and, with proper adjustment of feed and gas rates, very little fine material passed through the bed without reacting and only a very small fraction of the restraining bed was chlorinated. A typical reaction procedure was to fill the bench scale fluidized bed unit with a 1 kg charge of Australian rutile ore analyzing 95.5 pct TiO2, 0.6 pct FeO, a beach sand deposit 40 to 150 mesh size. When fluidized, the bed was approximately 2 ft in depth. The ore was fluidized with a 1:l mixture of chlorine and nitrogen at a rate of 0.40 ft per sec. This gas mixture was necessitated by the comparatively short bed depth; a larger unit, with a deeper bed, could be fluidized with chlorine alone without significant free chlorine loss. Feed rate was 8.0 g per min of beneficiated ilmenite analyzing 85.0 pct TiO2, 2.6 pct FeO plus 1.6 g per min of 20 to 60 mesh petroleum coke. The

I read Professor Gaudin's paper with great interest and pleasure because for some time I have held that the chemical aspect of comminution is a subject of considerable importance to the mineral dresser and deserves to be thoroughly investigated. It does seem appropriate, however, to emphasize the fact that "fresh" edges and corners produced by the grinding of solids display enhanced reactivity has been recognized and utilized in the development of certain mineral identification techniques. Some of these techniques are worth noting, not only because they might facilitate research in the aspect of mineral dressing under discussion, but also because they emphasize the fact that many mineral species commonly regarded as being very inert can display a surprising reactivity when in the freshly ground state. In 1951 Isakov published a number of tests for the components of certain mineral species which depend essentially on grinding in a mortar a mixture of the material under investigation with a solid reagent. Thus when stibnite, 4(Sb2S,), is ground with sodium or potassium hydroxide, the antimony is revealed by a momentary development of a yellow color which changes in air to orange-red. Other antimony minerals need a preliminary treatment before the test can be carried out. This consists of grinding with aluminium sulfate, ferric sulfate or potassium bisulfate, and breathing upon the resultant mixture.
