THE discovery of oil in 1901 on the Spindletop dome, Texas, inaugurated a new industry on the Gulf Coast, an industry which has grown with the discovery of successive fields, until today it engages the services of thousands of workers and employs enormous capital. New fields are being discovered from time to time and doubtless some still remain to be found, though of late years discoveries have become more infrequent. Nowadays several hundred dry holes are drilled each year in a fruitless and blind effort to discover new fields, for as yet geologic science has developed no effectual method of locating the coastal oil deposits in advance of drilling. Moreover, despite the occasional discovery of new fields, the total production of the Gulf Coast is today no greater than it was in 1906, for the added production of the new fields has been offset by the rapid decline and more or less complete exhaustion of some of the older ones. Careful geologic work within the fields has in some cases increased the production temporarily, but has developed no really new supplies. The Gulf Coast oil industry seems to have passed its period of greatest expansion and to be declining at a fairly steady rate, and this condition is naturally viewed with alarm by the more farsighted operators. In my opinion, the time has come for the adoption of radical and aggressive methods of prospecting, and a fraction of the money wasted yearly in drilling shallow wells in hopeless locations might well be devoted to this purpose. Zinc smelters in the central western States have established a very high standard of purity for blende-concentrates, viz., zinc 60, iron less than 3, and lead less than 1 per cent. The very low percentage of iron is made possible by the blende containing less than 0.5 per cent. of isomorphous iron sulphide and by the sparing occurrence of pyritic material in the large blende-deposits of southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The blende in these districts occurs in sub-carboniferous limestone, and is associated with chert, residual clay, cal-cite, pyrite or marcasite and bitumen. The different minerals are coarse and therefore readily separated by mechanical washing from the blende, with the exception of pyrite and marcasite, as blende has a specific gravity of from 3.9 to 4.1; marcasite, from 4.85 to 4.90; and pyrite, from 4.95 to 5.10. The common procedure of dressing the ores' is to crush in a breaker, size in a trommel with 0.5-in. holes, pass the over-size through roughing-rolls and then jig the ore, now reduced to 0.5 in. maximum size, in roughing multiple-sieve jigs. The products of these are waste-tailings, side-discharge coarse concentrates, side-discharge coarse middlings and bottom-discharge fine middlings. The coarse concentrates are sent to the market. The coarse middlings are crushed in middlings-rolls and brought back into the system by feeding into the main trommel. The fine middlings are cleaned upon finishing-jigs. THE mine and plant of the United Verde Copper Co., located in Yavapi County, at Jerome, Arizona, have been described in various technical publications and, therefore, a brief outline of its essential features will suffice. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron-schist contact, with the orebodies extending-about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. The mine is located on a mountain slope and has openings into it on three horizons, as follows: 1. Raises and ore passes open vertically into the shovel pit. These extend down to the 1000-ft. level, where they terminate as loading bins in the Hopewell adit. The main fan intake air shaft, which also extends vertically down to the 1000-ft. level, has its surface opening on the hillside at the extreme north end of the shovel pit, and the main mine air return exhausts through a raise at the extreme south end of the shovel pit. 2. The 500-ft. level adit. 3. The Hopewell adit on the 1000-ft. level. The mine has a vertical downward extent of 2000 ft. below the 1000-ft. level. Underground operations are carried on through two main shafts, both of which are wholly underground. Shaft 5 is the ore-hoisting shaft. It has three compartments and extends from the 800 to the 3150-ft. level. Shaft 6 is the service shaft, and is used for lowering and hoisting men and material. It has a large cage compartment and three smaller compartments for counterweights, ladderway, and pipe and power lines. This shaft extends from the 500 to the 2550-ft. level, and is now being extended to the 3000-ft. level. An air shaft for the downward movement of fresh air from the fan has been provided, and extends to the 2550-ft. level at this time. Work has been started to extend this air shaft to the 3000-ft. level. A return airway for vitiated mine air, in the form of raises and short connecting drifts, extends downward to the 2100-ft. level.

The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. IJntil quite recently but little pig copper Was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphorous ores of New England and the Sonth, and was generally sdd to reSneries not far from the ore filrnaceu. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior copper Company, and the works of C:G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. In reviewing petroleum development in Venezuela during the year 1936, it is well to bear in mind certain factors that affected progress, although not directly connected with the oil industry itself. At the start of the year, when the present Federal Administration took over the reins of government, reaction against the former regime resulted in some popular uprisings. Although these were entirely political in character, they were not without their effect on the oil industry itself. Such popular agitation really ended with a short general strike in Caracas, Maracaibo and other cities during June, these strikes being based on demands for certain changes in government policies. The strikes were duly investigated and their motives taken into consideration by the executive power or by Congress, and during the year many of the civil, political and administrative laws have been revised. In June and December, however, it was necessary to suspend activities in drilling and production work, particularly in the Lake Maracaibo Basin area. In June a strike caused a five-day shutdown in the main producing fields and on Dec. 14 labor difficulties resulted in a shutdown that continued to the end of the year, which necessitated suspension of all drilling and production in the Lake Basin area and curtailment of shipments to deep-water terminals. Actually, the strike lasted for a period of 42 days, until Federal intervention brought the dispute to a close with minor wage increases to workers hut with no loss of initiative or independence on the part of the oil companies. Operations in eastern Venezuela were not affected by the labor disturbances, production and exports having been reduced in December only in the Lake Basin fields. Well Completions On Jan. 1, 1937, a total of 3384 wells had been completed throughout Venezuelan fields, as compared with 3094 on Jan. 1,1936. Of these wells, 2005 were producers. The 290 completions effected during 1936 were by the following operating companies: Lago Petroleum Corporation, 123 completions; Dutch Shell group, 104; Standard Oil Company of Venezuela, 46; Mene Grande Oil Co., 15; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., 2.

The first successful use of the wire saw in slate quarrying in the United States was late in 1926, at the quarry of the Colonial Slate Co. near Wind Gap, Pa. This installation was sponsored and supervised by the United States Bureau of Mines in collaboration with the National Slate Association.' The success of this trial resulted in other installations of wire saws, so that 27 were in operation at Pennsylvania slate quarries2 by October, 1928. Marble Quarrying with a Wire Saw Until recently, little or no attempt has been made to use the wire saw in the quarrying of other stone, but it is believed that its successful use in slate will be followed by attempts to take advantage of its possibilities in other quarrying operations. An example of such a trial is the recent installation of a wire saw at the marble quarry of the Saint Clair Marble Co. near Guion, in the Ozark region of northern Arkansas. This quarry is in a comparatively new district and the decision to open and develop it had to be made in the face of many unknown factors. For this reason, it was essential that the development costs be held at a minimum, and as a wire saw could be installed more cheaply than standard channeling equipment, it was decided to try it out. One factor Largely controlling the decision was that the location was peculiarly adapted to this method. The point of development selected was on the rather abrupt end of a ridge formed on the south by an almost perpendicular bluff along the White River and on the north by a rather steep slope with little or no overburden. By taking advantage of this topography it was possible to place the supporting standards for the sheaves at both the outer and driving end without the necessity of drilling or excavating openings to receive them, and to locate the motive power in line with these standards, which made it unnecessary to deflect the sheaves.

Until 1934, natural ventilation was depended upon in the mine of the Climax Molybdenum Co. at Climax, Colorado. In that year a 7-ft. axial-flow, low-pressure fan was installed as an exhausting unit. In 1936, three more fans of the same kind were installed, all as exhausting units, with a total capacity of 115 000 cu, ft. per min., and since then fans and sprays have been added as required. Atmospheric Conditions Adverse atmospheric conditions at this elevation of 11,500 ft. account in part for difficulty in maintaining adequate ventilation throughout the mine. Barometric pressures range from 18.99 to 20.01 in. of mercury; the norma1 average being 19.70 in. Air weight is 0.051 lb. per cu. ft., and humidity is low—about a 30 per cent yearly average. This makes the use of mechanical humidity aids mandatory the Year around to prevent excessive dryness of the mine workings and the resultant dust hazard. The yearly temperature range is from minus 24" to 75°F.; typically, in February 1942 the mean low was minus 3.25°F. and the mean high, 21.3°F. In August the mean low was 34.8°F.; the mean high, 64.26°F. Even during the summer month air filtration through the openings of the cave area is 32°F., owing to accumulation of snow in the glory hole and in Part to glacial ice, which, combined with a rock temperature of 39°F. on the upper levels (elevation 11,945 ft.) and 42°F. on the main haulage level (elevation 11,470 ft.], makes it difficult to maintain a comfortable working temperature. The one advantage in ventilation of mine workings at the altitude of the Climax mine is that the power required to circulate a given air volume is 32 per cent less than would be required at sea level. Problems since 1936 the mine management has studied intensively plans for providing adequate ventilation for the entire mine for its expected life. As the ore breaks into large pieces, much secondary blasting is necessary, therefore there is a considerable amount of smoke, gas and dust, which requires circulation of a large amount of air to remove the contamination, It is undesirable to use haulage drifts and manways as air passages because some would be passageways for contaminated air also, and there would be undesirable high velocities in some drifts. High velocities and large volumes of subfreezing air dry out the passageways through which they pass, and thus increase the amount of dust. Regulating doors in haulage drifts are difficult of upkeep and interfere with production. It was decided as a general principle to distribute fresh air to each working place at low velocities and low pressures and to remove contaminated air as soon as possible with a minimum of travel through working places.

IN his valuable report on Finishing Temperatures and Properties of Rails, I Dr. G. K. Burgess, Chief of the Division of Metallurgy, U. S. Bureau of Standards, has begun a line of investigation which should be continued by those interested in the subject, and who have proper facilities for carrying put the work. For the past year or more the Bethlehem Steel Co. has been conducting experiments to learn the effect of rail finishing temperatures on their physical properties and microstructure and the results are here given for the consideration of those interested in the rail situation. . Considerable differences of opinion have been expressed by various authorities, in the past, as to the effect of large or small grain size and high or low finishing temperatures of steel rails on their physical properties and wearing qualities. Low finishing temperatures and, therefore, low shrinkage, have been advocated on the theory that the wearing qualities would be improved. Others have recommended high finishing temperatures. The generally accepted cause for rail failures, due to the development ,of transverse fissures, is excessive wheel pressure on hard rails. One of the causes advanced for hard rails has been that they contain too high per centages of carbon and manganese; another that the rails were finished at too low a temperature, i.e., at or near the critical point. In the experiments herein described the rails were rolled from reheated blooms. All the rail blooms were charged hot in a reheating furnace and brought up to about the original ingot-rolling temperature before rolling into rails. These rails gave better results in deflection, withstood a greater number of drops before breaking, and showed greater ductility, than. rails of identically the same composition and section which were rolled, direct from the ingot. Rails rolled from reheated blooms, finished at somewhat higher temperatures than when rolled direct from the ingot, have a different microstructure, which the writer does not believe is due so much to the difference in finishing temperatures, as to the difference in

Throughout the anthracite industry's history, the problem of handling and disposing of refuse material has been one of major importance. In the early days of the industry's activities, only the large sizes of anthracite were satisfactory for market requirements and the smaller sizes were deposited as refuse. As time went by, more efficient coal-burning equipment was developed and a market demand was created for the finer sizes of coal. This demand made it possible to recover marketable coal from banks deposited as refuse in the earlier days of mining. The same condition holds good today and we can see a definite trend toward the objective of utilizing the No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat sizes. Under present conditions, we know that a limited market exists for No. 4 and 5 buckwheat; we know that the finer sizes of anthracite can be burned as pulverized fuel; we know that these fine sizes can be processed and sold as briquettes, and we also know that the heat content of these fine sizes of coal is comparable with that of the sizes now merchandized. Therefore, it should be the objective of the industry to conserve these fine sizes of coal in such manner that if and when processing facilities are developed, and market demands exist, the material can be salvaged and made available to meet these demands. From the standpoint of economical future reclamation, the ideal method of disposing of refuse containing the finer sizes of coal is to deposit it in banks separate and apart from other breaker refuse. By this procedure, the minimum amount of material will be processed in future salvage operations to recover the No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat sizes. Many collieries in the anthracite region are operated under leases that have a specific term. These lease agreements provide that, upon expiration of the lease by term, exhaustion or otherwise, the ownership of the refuse material reverts to the lessor. Therefore, a question was raised in the minds of these operators: Why should I assume the expense of such procedure when I have no assurance that I will benefit by the future processing and sale of these fine sizes? Under present conditions, the answer to this question is not one of choice but of necessity, as restrictions imposed by legislation make it mandatory on operators of preparation plants to take necessary steps to properly treat silt-laden waters before permitting them to enter the streams. By reason of these restrictions, the disposal of fine sizes becomes a secondary rather than a primary operating consideration, and the procedure for disposing of this refuse becomes a matter of choice governed principally by topographical and geographical conditions. Methods of Handling Refuse There are three principal methods of handling and disposing of fine-size refuse; namely:

This paper presents the depletion-performance correlations developed using data from PVT studies and well-completion tests of 27 rich gas-condensate and volatile-oil reservoir fluids. The PVT behavior for each fluid war determined experimentally in the laboratory, and the depletion performance of each fluid was then calculated. Well-completion test data consisting of reservoir pressure and temperature, initial total gas-oil ratio, and stock-tank oil gravity were used with the depletion-performance data to develop general performance correlations. Three correlations are presented. The first equation shows the empirical relation of gas in place per barrel of hydrocarbon pore space with reservoir pressure and temperature, and initial total gas-oil ratio. The second equation is the correlation of stock-tank oil in place per barrel of hydrocarbon pore space. The third equation relates stock-tank oil production (to 500-psia depletion pressure) with pressure, temperature and oil gravity. All three correlations are also presented in convenient graphical form. Gas production to 500-psia depletion pressure is approximately 92.6 per cent of the gas in place for each fluid, so no correlation was developed for gas production. INTRODUCTION The rate of discovery of shallow, low-pressure and low-temperature oil reservoirs in the United States has been declining in recent years. For this reason, the search for oil has gone to greater depths where high pressures and temperatures are encountered. A high-pressure and high-temperature reservoir is the environment in which many rich gas condensates and highly volatile oils are found. Because of this trend, the performance prediction of such reservoirs has become an important task of the reservoir engineer. The need and usefulness of a performance correlation based on field data that are available from the usual well-completion tests have previously been established. These earlier attempts have shown that the phase behavior of rich gas-condensate systems and volatile-oil systems can be correlated with fluid properties, pressure and temperature. However, very little information on gas-condensate depletion performance5 was available at the time of these earlier attempts. The availability of more recent data has made possible the development of an improved correlation. The data, as listed in Tables I and 2, are for 25 gas-condensate and two volatile-oil systems that were studied. The problem was to correlate the data for in-place fluids and the production data with the initial total gas-oil ratio, initial reservoir pressure and temperature, and stock-tank oil gravity. These correlations were obtained by multiple regression analysis, whereby the data were fitted to an equation by the method of least squared error. BASIS OF THE CORRELATIONS 1. The data used in the development of these correlations were obtained from depletion-performance calculations6 and well-test or production measurements. 2. All of the independent variables used in the correlations are available from the usual well-test completion data. 3. The reservoir volume considered is 1 bbl of hydrocarbon pore space (HCPS). 4. The gas-oil ratio used is the total standard cubic feet of gas (at 14.7 psia, 60F) coming off the entire separator train per barrel of stock-tank oil. This minimizes the effect of separator conditions which might vary from system to system. 5. The correlated pressures are the actual reservoir pressures which might or might not be the saturation pressure of the reservoir fluid.

IT was noted that variations existed in the magnetic properties, namely, coercive force, He, and rema-nence, Br, of 18/8 stainless steel wires of the same analysis when these wires were given the same percentage of reductiori of area at different rates of reduction. In order to determine the extent of these variations, a program was initiated whereby commercial 302 and 304 stainless steels were drawn with a wide variation of speeds. Ultimate tensile strengths and specific resistances, as well as the Hc-BT measurements, were determined. If variations of considerable magnitude were found, it was thought that the knowledge accrued from the investigation could probably aid in determining the particular drawing speed required to obtain desired properties for a given specification for a particular analysis of wire. Drawing Procedure Two specimens (set I, No. 302 and No. 304), the chemical analyses of which are given in Table I, were drawn at different speeds, namely, 45 to 3900 ft per min, directly from 0.016 in. diam wire to 0.004 in. diam wire, a 93.7 pct reduction of area. To obtain this high percentage of reduction, the wire at 0.016 in. was softened by annealing at 1150°C. It was then strung in a No. 16CF variable speed Vaughn drawing unit and passed through 13 B.&S. gage dies of successively smaller diameter, as shown in the accompanying table. Following this step, several hundred feet of the wire was drawn, at a particular speed, through the dies and wound upon a spool. Once the sample of wire was drawn at the desired speed, the spool with the finished sample was removed, tagged for later identification, and an empty spool was placed in the machine. Another wire sample was drawn at a different speed, after making the necessary adjustments upon the Vaughn unit. At the greater speeds, several thousand feet of sample were drawn to insure that the wire to be used for testing would be uniform. This was done because the desired speed was not reached instantly; the wire taking a short while to attain the required drawing rate. All speed measurements were made by placing a tachometer against one of the machine's pulleys during the actual drawing of the specimens. 84.4 pct reduction of area. The 0.072 in. diameter wire was also annealed at 1150°C. The process of obtaining samples was the same as described above. The only difference between the two was that the rates involved were not as extensive, set II covering a range of 625 to 1150 ft per min. Tensile tests were carried out for the 0.004 in. diam wires on a horizontal Scott Tensile Tester, while tensile tests for the 0.028 in. diam wires were made on a vertical Scott Tensile Tester. Each value listed in the tables represented the average of five samples with a maximum deviation of approximately 3 pct among the samples. Resistance per foot of the wires was determined by use of standard bridges accurate to the nearest hundreth of an ohm for the 0.004 in. wire, and to the nearest thousandth of an ohm for the 0.028 in. wire. In the first part of this paper, an estimate is made of the magnitude and extent of the thermal stresses which result from mud circulation. Our study is made for the period of relaxation, i.e., when the drilling operations are terminated and mud circulation is discontinued. In the second part, we have shown how the thermal stress can affect the wave propagation. An example is worked out for a Carbondale sandstone (Illinois basin). It is concluded that, in extreme cases when differential temperature is about 100°F, the travel time will be affected by about 2 microsec/ft. For more refined permeability studies, such corrections would be desirable. MAGNITUDE AND EXTENT OF THERMAL STRESSES RESULTING FROM MUD CIRCULATION When geological beds are penetrated by boreholes, it is observed that the formation temperatures increase with depth; however, the temperature profile varies considerably from place to place. During drilling operations, mud pumped from a pit at atmospheric temperature absorbs heat from the lower beds. As a result, the drilling fluid returning to the surface is at a higher temperature than the surrounding beds. The temperature gradient in a well depends on the rate of mud circulation and other factors; normally, this temperature gradient is smaller than the natural gradient in the formations. (See Fig. 1.) The temperature difference between the mud column and the surrounding beds gives rise to therma1 stresses (which are also important in the phenomenon of fracturing), and it is expected that they will affect the transit time of the sonic front in velocity logging.1 It is evident chat beds near the surface will undergo various cycles and will have a complicated dynamical and thermal-stress history. A limestone bed which is just penetrated will act as a source of heat, warming up the cold mud pumped down a few minutes earlier from the surface pit. The same limestone bed a week later will act as a sink, absorbing heat from the drilling mud which has already warmed up sufficiently to be at a higher temperature than the bed in question. No doubt a large section of the hole will undergo a heat treatment, which will make the calculation of the exact magnitude of the thermal stresses very difficult. In the solution of wellbore thermal equation, it is assumed that the rock around the wellbore is elastic and isotropic, and that the system is radially symmetrical. A complete dynamical solution of the thermal stresses set up at different horizons during the drilling operations would require a comprehensive history of the mud circulation, the surface temperature of the pit and the number of hours in which mud was not circulated. CONDUCTION OF HEAT AND THERMAL EQUATION OF STATE

DESPITE the fact that a combination of metals-aluminum-zinc-tin, and sometimes aluminum-zinc-cadmium-is extensively used for aluminum solders, as well as for die-castings, the constitution of these alloys has not yet been made clear. I. BINARY SYSTEMS The system aluminum-zinc is the basis of the ternary alloys under consideration. Their composition was made sufficiently clear by the investigations of Rosenhain and Archbutt,1 Bauer and Vogel,2 Sander and Meissner,3 Hanson and Gayler4 and Isihara.5 Only the temperature of decomposition of the crystals 0 seems still to be doubtful, whether it is considered as a compound of Al2Zn3 (according to Bauer and Vogel) or as an intermediate phase of variant composition (according to Hanson and Gayler). This temperature is given by most of the authors as in the neighborhood of 256° C., only Isihara giving 280° C. As its accurate determination is of special importance in the study of the ternary alloys under consideration it was experimentally controlled in the following manner: An alloy corresponding in composition to the formula Al2Zn3 was made, in which the temperature effect was found to be the greatest. This was drilled and a silver-constantan thermoelement inserted into the cavity so as to be in direct contact with the alloy. The whole was then very slowly heated and the heating and cooling curves determined. The transition temperature from the heating curve was found to be 281° C., whereas from the cooling curve it was 252° C.

MUCH experimental work has been performed on the mechanism of agglomeration and pelletizing of moist ore and concentrates and on the process of firing agglomerates, but except for the work of Tigerschiöld and Ilmoni1 much of the published information is empirical, and the literature contains no information concerning the structure of fired pellets. Results of a preliminary study of the microstructures occurring in pellets produced both in the laboratory and on a pilot-plant scale are presented in this paper. Most of the results were obtained from pellets prepared from Mesabi magnetic taconite, but through the courtesy of the staffs of the Minnesota Mines Experiment Station and the Bethlehem Steel Co., fired pellets produced from limonite and hematite ores and from Lebanon magnetite have also been examined. The work has been restricted almost entirely to pellets produced without additives, the exceptions being those in which coal was. added to the filter cake before rolling. Schwartz has described the microstructures occurring in ore sinters produced under reducing conditions.2 Many of the structures and constituents he describes are common to fired pellets, but the constituents normally occur in markedly different proportions. His statement that "in all satisfactory sinter the amount of hematite is small, perhaps not over 2 or 3 per cent" is inapplicable to pellets produced by pilot plant operation or by any process in which air is not deliberately excluded. Pilot plant pellets contain over 90 pct by weight of hematite, and those produced in the smaller furnaces of the Minnesota Mines Experiment Station contain more than 80 pct of that constituent. Preparation of Specimens It is difficult to examine unfired pellets microscopically because of their insufficient coherency to withstand sectioning and polishing. Fired pellets sometimes lack coherency and frequently contain holes which are troublesome during polishing. Impregnation of both air-dried and fired pellets is readily accomplished by the use of methyl methacrylate monomer.3 The dry pellets are covered in a test tube with excess monomer, to which a small amount of accelerator has been added. When the test tube is placed in a cooling bath and evacuated with an aspirator, most of the entrapped air is removed, and disruption of weak pellets by boiling of the monomer is reduced to a minimum. Polymerization is then effected by immersion of the test tube in a water-bath at about 45°C, this temperature being held for 4 or 5 days. The test tube may then be broken away from the solidified mass and the pellets sectioned by a carborundum wheel or a diamond saw. Where time is important, impregnation is carried out at a higher temperature by Meyer's method.4 Air-dried pellets must be impregnated with especial care; otherwise swelling occurs and the solids are displaced. It is more important to be certain that the monomer forms a reasonably complete network throughout the specimen than that all entrained air is removed, and for this reason the vacuum technique may be omitted. Impregnated agglomerated products and pellets are extremely coherent, section well, and may be polished either by hand or by machine. Hand polishing is not satisfactory for the examination of conditions existing at the boundaries of grains, and for this machine polishing must be used. The Graton-Vanderwilt machine gives excellent results, provided that pressure on the specimen is considerably in excess of that recommended by the manufacturer. Mineralogy of Fired Pellets Only two opaque iron minerals, magnetite and hematite, have been recognized in pellets. The complete identity of these artificial minerals with their corresponding natural counterparts is shown by their mineralographic characteristics and their X-ray structures. Wüstite has not been found. Slag is the most common transparent constituent of fired pellets. UNTIL 1934, natural ventilation was depended upon in the mine of the Climax Molybdenum Co. at Climax, Colorado. In that year a 7-ft. axial-flow, low-pressure fan was installed as an exhausting unit. In 1936, three more fans of the same kind were installed, all as exhausting units, with a total capacity of 115,000 cu. ft. per min., and since then fans and sprays have been added as required. ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS Adverse atmospheric conditions at this elevation of 11,500 ft. account in part for difficulty in maintaining adequate ventilation throughout the mine. Barometric pressures range from 18.99 to 20.01 in. of mercury; the normal average being 19.70 in. Air weight is 0.051 lb. per cu. ft., and humidity is low-about a 30 per cent yearly average. This makes the use of mechanical humidity aids mandatory the year around to prevent excessive dryness of the mine workings and the resultant dust hazard. The yearly temperature range is from minus 24° to 95°F.; typically, in February 1942 the mean low was minus 3.25°F. and the mean high, 21.3°F. In August the mean low was 34.8°F.; the mean high, 64.26°F. Even during the summer month air filtration through the openings of the cave area is 32°F., owing to accumulation of snow in the glory hole and in part to glacial ice, which, combined with a rock temperature of 39°F. on the upper levels (elevation 11,945 ft.) and 42°F. on the main haulage level (elevation 11,490 ft.), makes it difficult to maintain a comfortable working temperature. The one advantage in ventilation of mine workings at the altitude of the Climax mine is that the power required to circulate a given air volume is 32 per cent less than would be required at sea level. PROBLEMS Since 1936 the mine management has studied intensively plans for providing adequate ventilation for the entire mine for its expected life. As the ore breaks into large pieces, much secondary blasting is necessary, therefore there is a considerable amount of smoke, gas and dust, which requires circulation of a large amount of air to remove the contamination. It is undesirable to use haulage drifts and manways as air passages because some would be passageways for contaminated air also, and there would be undesirable high velocities in some drifts. High velocities and large volumes of subfreezing air dry out the passageways through which they pass, and thus increase the amount of dust. Regulating doors in haulage drifts are difficult of upkeep and interfere with production. It was decided as a general principle to distribute fresh air to each working place at low velocities and low pressures and to remove contaminated air as soon as possible with a minimum of travel through working places.

By this system the ore, instead of being shipped direct to the mill or smelter, is sent to a public sampler, where it is crushed and sampled. Guaranteed samples are sent to the different metallurgical establishments, and the ore is then sold to the highest bidder. The equilibrium Mn + 2 IiCl = MnCl2(g) + H2 has been studied at 1090°C for pure manganese and for Mn-Si alloys. For this reoction a standard free energy of Fo1363, = - 19,700 i 300 col ioas found. Combined with other thermal data, the standard free energy of the reaction Mn(s, ß) + Cl2 = MnCl2(g) was derived: Fo=- 56,140 + 9.78 T log T - 40.10 T For the formation of the various manganese silicides the following free energies were obtained. 5 Mn + 3 Si - M1z5Si3 ?F°1363 = -41,500 i 1500 cal Mn + Si - h.lnSi ?F°1363= -10,000 i 500 cnl Mn + 2 Si = MnSiz ?F°1363= -11,500 ± 500 cal In the search for a method suitable for the study of thermodynamic properties of certain alloy systems, it was found that the heterogeneous equilibrium between the alloy and a gas mixture consisting of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen, and volatile metal chlorides has considerable advantages. In addition to giving thermodynamic information about the alloys, such measurements may be used to derive thermodynamic data for the volatile metal chloride itself. The present paper gives some results which were obtained for manganese silicides and manganous chloride. Similar studies are presently being carried out for the iron silicides. The phase diagram of the Mn-Si system is rather well known,' but no information exists to the authors' knowledge about the thermodynamic properties of manganese silicides or about the chemical activities in molten Mn-Si alloys. At elevated temperature, manganese may react with hydrogen chloride according to the equation: Mn(s, ß ) + 2 HC1 = MnC1, (g ) + H2 [ 1] with the equilibrium constant The value of K, may be determined from measurements of the gas composition in equilibrium with pure manganese. When this value is used in connection with measurements on manganese alloys, the chemical activity of manganese in the alloy may be derived. Initial calculations showed that around 1000" to 1200°C the equilibrium constant K1 has a value of a few thousand, i.e., the reaction is shifted far to the right. In order to study this rather unbalanced gas composition, a flow method was used in two slightly different modifications. For all experiments with manganese silicides and for some experiments with pure manganese the apparatus shown on Fig. 1 was used. A bed of the metal or alloy was placed in a tube furnace. The refractory tube had an internal diameter of 14 mm and the bed was 75 mm long. Electrolytic manganese of high purity and silicon, 99.95 pct Si, were used as raw materials. All alloys were prepared by melting weighed amounts of the elements in a high frequency induction furnace in argon atmosphere. The melting was done in a silica crucible which was placed inside a graphite shell. The alloys were crushed to - 10 +40 mesh and analyzed chemically. Also, for the pure elements, the same size fraction was used. A controlled gas mixture of purified hydrogen and from 3 to 12 pct HC1 was passed through the bed where it reacted with manganese according to Eq. [I]. UNDER the caption "fault," geologists intend to include all mass movements of solid rocks over adjacent rock masses. When these are studied long after their origin, however, circumstances make it possible to recognize as "fault" only formations showing clear evidence of actual movement of one side with respect to the other. Necessarily the chief evidence consists of the offset of a vein, bed, or other key structure. Planes of movement parallel to the bedding, or nearly so, are recognized with difficulty or are overlooked and hence many important faults are wholly unrecorded. Indeed, among standard American references on structural geology, one alone emphasizes the importance of bedding-plane movements and that one only briefly1. For some time the writer, cognizant of this difficulty, has paid special attention to such movements, both as observed in the field and as recorded in the literature. It is believed that enough data are now at hand to justify a short discussion. Its purposes are fivefold. It is desired first to briefly classify and describe at least the more common kinds of bedding-plane faults, and second, to examine the causes and manner of their formation, at least in instances where the subject has not yet been well covered by other investigators. Third, certain by-products of bedding- lane movements are of such conspicuous importance to the economic geologist and mining engineer as to merit mention. Fourth, concrete illustrations should be placed before the reader in order to lend reality and to furnish a basis of comparison with his experience; such illustrations will necessarily be scattered through the text of this paper. They are only in part from the writer's own field observations. The fifth and prime objective of this paper is to direct attention to the great importance of movements on the bedding planes, in the hope that the recognition of such movements and their significance may simplify mining problems.
