INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metal values can be divided into two broad categories: (a) Processes involving the treatment of high grade material (e.g. finely divided mineral concentrates); and (b) processes which treat lower grade material (ores, waste dumps, etc.). This discussion will be directed primarily toward the first category, but in either case a fundamental knowledge of the intrinsic kinetics and thermodynamics is necessary to understand the behavior of the system. The bulk of research efforts in the last decade along these lines has been aimed at the recovery of copper (1-8). However much information has also been reported on uranium (9, 10) , zinc (11) , cobalt and nickel (12, 13). More comprehensive reviews on these areas are also available (14). As discussed by Sepulveda and Herbst (15, 16) one of the most difficult problems facing process designers is the acquisition and scale-up of reliable information concerning the intrinsic kinetics of leaching systems. The scale-up or modeling of these multiparticle systems is far more complex than that of homogeneous ones. This is due to the numerous rate determining steps which are possible with heterogeneous reactions and the broad distribution of properties of a multiparticle feed such as particle size and mineralogical composition (16). In addition, other factors must also be considered such as interactions between particles, the anisotropic nature of individual particles, the effect of solution chemistry, and electrochemical phenomena. All of these factors must be taken into account, often simultaneously. The thrust of this paper will be to more closely examine how the factors mentioned above can be treated. In wertability alteration flooding, a chemical agent is rnoved through a reservoir by the flood water to increase oil recovery by decreasing the degree of wetting of the rock by the oil. Substantial amounts of the chemical may be lost during movement through the reservoir. The extent of the loss, and therefore the economics of the process, depends in some cases on factors which are difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. Therefore, a short-duration, low-cost field test method is needed to permit evaluation of chemical requirements under actual field conditions. This paper describes a small scale rest conducted at a single well for measuring chemical requirements, thereby giving a more reliable evaluation of this important factor in the applicability and economics of the process. In the rest a small wafer slug containing the chemical agent and a nonadsorbed tracer is displaced into the reservoir by a known volume of wafer. The well is then placed on producrion. Chemical loss per barrel of pore volume contacted is calculated from [he fractional recoveries of the agent tested and the nonadsorbed tracer. The method has been used to determine within the actual reservoirs the chemical requirements for both a sandstone and a dolomite reservoir. Several chemical agents are potentially available for wettability alteration flooding, although none is universally applicable. For some applications of the method, chemical costs per barrel of additional oil recovered can be substantially less than one dollar. INTRODUCTION Wettability alteration flooding provides a means of increasing oil recovery from reservoirs by decreasing the degree of wetting of the rock by the oil and increasing the displacement efficiency of the flood water. Earlier studies demonstrated a relationship between oil recovery during waterflooding and the degree of wetting of a rock surface by an oil. The application of wettability alteration flooding to the Harrisburg field of Nebraska provided a field test' of this recovery process. Subsequently, additional laboratory and field tests have developed additional procedures for evaluating wettability alteration flooding, and have indicated where the process may be applicable. Applicability of this process to specific reservoirs is determined by a progression of tests to determine sus- ceptibility of the reservoir to alteration of its wettability, to indicate the degree of recovery improvement and to estimate the amount of chemical required to process the reservoir. The economics of applying improved oil recovery processes depends not only upon the degree of improvement in oil recovery achievable by the process but also upon the process costs and the timing of the income and the investment. Emphasis in this paper is on the expenditure aspects of the process. The work reported in this paper indicates that the chemical investments required for wettability alteration flooding are substantial. For evaluating the economics of a potential flooding application it is imperative that a sound estimate of the chemical requirements be made for the reservoir. Generally, true reservoir conditions are not adequately simulated in laboratory chemical propagation tests. Because of wide well spacings, many years might be required to obtain chemical propagation data from conventional pilots or inter-well tests. Consequently, n short-duration, low-cost method is needed to determine chemical requirements in the field. The potential applicability of wettability alteration flooding is discussed, as well as the economics of wettability alteration with respect to the inherent and imposed restrictions on the timing of income and investments. DETERMINATION OF CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS In the process of moving a chemical bank through reservoir rock, some of the chemical agent lags too far behind the flood front to be effective or is otherwise lost to the reservoir system. The extent to which these losses occur overshadows the reductions in chemical concentration due to diffusion and to mixing with the reservoir fluids. Experience indicates that almost without exception, chemicals which induce a wetting change undergo either sorption reactions or chemical reactions with mineral constituents of the pore surfaces. Other reactions may occur between the added chemical and the reservoir oil and water. Even in limiting consideration to reactions of the relatively inexpensive inorganic salts, bases and acids, the reactions may be exceedingly complex. Reservoir pore surfaces consist of more than silica in sandstone reservoirs, and more than calcite or dolomite in carbonate reservoirs. Many mineral species are present, each exhibiting specific tendencies to react with an injected chemical. The reactions which occur can consume enough of the agent to have an important effect on economics. These reactions can cause a change in pH of the chemical bank, or may remove some of the active chemical by precipitation, adsorption or reaction to form a new chemical which may or may not be effective in

Results from work on the effect of inferstitials on recovery and recrystallization of' very pure iron (99.995 pet) doped with nilrogen up to 400 ppm are reported. Nitrided specimens were obtained by heating the iron in a static atmosphere of NH3 + H2. The samples were cold-rolled 80 pet, subjected to a series of isochronal and isothermal anneals, and submitted to examination by X-rays, micrographs, and hardness tests. Small additions of nitrogen show a strong effect in reducing recovery of' the mechanical properties of high-purity iron. At the temperatures of. the experiments, this effect proved greater than in the case of carbon. At 400°C pure iron recovers more than 50 pet of the total hardness increase, carburized iron vecovers 25 pet, and nitrided iron only 10 pet. On the other hand. the addition of nitrogen has, similarly to carbon, a very small effect on recrystallization; the effect is, however, slightly higher than that of carbon. When the concentration Of nitrogen is above the solubility limit in a iron at the temperattue of the experiments, an increase in the frequency of nu -cleation is also observed. THE object of the present work is to improve knowledge on the effect of interstitials both on recovery and on primary recrystallization of pure iron. In fact. at present there are no available data on the effect of nitrogen on high-purity iron. The only work which at present can be somewhat related to this problem is a work of Leak et al.1 in which grain boundary internal friction at high temperature in the presence of increasing amounts of nitrogen is studied by a torsion pendulum. The present work is a continuation of a previous one2 on the effects of carbon. EXPERIMENTAL PART Preparation of the Material. Pure iron was prepared following the same methods used in the pre- vious work2 and was nitrided using controlled quantities of ammonia in an apparatus similar to that used for carburizing. The apparatus consists essentially of a gas-tight quartz tube containing the specimens. The tube, maintained at constant pressure by means of a mercury seal, is placed in a resistance furnace. For nitriding, the NH3 + H2 atmosphere with a suitable concentration of NH3 was introduced into the tube, which had been previously carefully evacuated and degassed by heating at 600°C. The hydrogen used was carefully purified by passing it through a palladium filter. The ammonia required was prepared with the following reaction: CaO + 2NH4CI —CaCl2 + H2O + 2NH3 by heating the mixture of CaO and NH4C1 in a glass flask and then collecting the ammonia in a graduated Hempel burette. For each nitriding program a given amount of NH3 prepared by this method was introduced together with the H2 into the tube previously evacuated. Nitriding of the sample was then performed at 570°C for 48 hr. After this, to ensure a homogeneous distribution of nitrogen, the samples were further heated for 72 hr at 800°C. With this method which uses a static nitriding atmosphere, carefully controlled conditions of purity are obtained. Contrarily, with the conventional continuous-flow methods, using large quantities of circulating gas, there is a greater risk of introducing impurities into the samples. Furthermore, the required nitrogen concentration in the specimen is easily predetermined and obtained. A plot of the relation observed between the initial concentration of NH3 in the gas and the quantity of nitrogen introduced into the iron samples is given in Fig. 1. The data refer to samples of 1.2-mm thickness and to the nitriding conditions previously described. Furthermore, as a comparison, the data relative to two 0.5-mm-thick samples are reported. The presence of a reservoir in the cold zone of the reaction bulb made possible the gradual dissociation of ammonia on the sample in the hot zone. Internal-friction methods were used to determine the content of nitrogen dissolved in the iron samples. Some analyses were also carried out with chemical methods. Developments in California during 1942 were marked by many difficulties in operation, of which the lack of labor and material were the main factors in slowing down work. During the many years of curtailment, which has been effective since 1928, a number of estimates of the state's capacity to produce have been built up, but during the year 44 fields were 'eliminated from curtailment and valuable data were obtained as to the normal capacity of these fields to produce. Because of new discoveries and the normal decline of old fields, which is more than 15 per cent per year, it is estimated that the sustained capacity of the state for a 5-year period is not more than 500,000 bbl. per day. Decline in the rate of production was greatest in the fields in the Los Angeles Basin district. These fields have been produced nearly at capacity for many years and had no reserve of shut-in production. The San Joaquin Valley and Coastal districts have responded well to the increased allotments assigned to them by the Petroleum Administrator for War. All heavy oil fields in the state are on full production, except in the Coastal district, where transportation is the limiting factor. Although approximately 2500 more wells are on production in the state than there were in 1941, the supply of heavy crude has not yet reached the demand. A summary of statistics for 1941 and 1942 is given in the following table. Production in California for 1942 was 680,000 bbl. a day as against 631,000 bbl. a day for 1941, an increase of 7.8 per cent. The present maximum efficient rate has been estimated at 808,000 bbl. per day. This indicates that in the 15 restricted fields of the state there is only an additional 83,000 bbl. per day of light oil available. Drilling Activity Drilling activity during the year was equivalent to but 70 per cent of normal. Although shortages of equipment and labor were in part responsible for the reduced drilling activity, the main reasons were the lack of proved locations due to a cycle of very few new discoveries and the restrictions of Conservation Order M-68. For the first six months of the year, 300 new oil wells were completed, which were equally divided as to the number of light and heavy oil producers. But, for the last six months of the year, it is

QUICKSAND far below the surface, stopped two attempts by the Potash Co. of America to sink a third shaft to a potash bed that lies 1000 ft below the southern New Mexico desert. Virtually all methods of grouting were employed in the two failures without any indication of consolidation of the flowing sand. Sinking the South Shaft at the Carlsbad potash mine seemed an almost insurmountable task, until freezing was employed as a final resort. This process that proved to be the answer may be defined as "the sinking of a shaft by freezing, consists of the formation, in the water-bearing strata, of a large block of frozen ground in which it is possible to sink a shaft without danger of an influx of water, providing the ice-wall between the water outside and the shaft itself is strong enough to resist the hydrostatic pressure." Freezing Method Used Extensively in Europe Successful frozen ground shaft sinking projects had been completed in Europe, and Russel G. Haworth, resident manager of the Potash Co. of America, went abroad in search of the know-how needed for the New Mexico undertaking. The freezing process, with a history of two failures at the time, was first successfully employed by Poetsch in 1885 at the Houssu Collieries near Haine St. Pierre, Belgium. Poetsch contracted to sink the remaining 64 ft of an uncompleted shaft through water laden strata from a depth of 190 ft to a depth of 254 ft. This work was in progress until 1887. The freezing and sinking consumed more than two years. As a result of early failures, the process was not favorably received until soon after the turn of the century. The accurate prediction of success in a given application was made possible by the concerted effort and study of a group of European engineers. Means of accurate deviation measurement and control were devised, the nature and properties of frozen water laden soil (the ice wall) were investigated, a thorough and rational basis of refrigeration load calculation developed, and concurrently the efficiency and dependability of refrigeration machinery was greatly advanced. Numerous shafts in Germany, Belgium, France, and England today testify to the reliability and economical surety of the freezing method. Applied to the South Shaft, which is circular in cross-section and 15-ft diam, the freezing method consisted of drilling holes 350-ft deep, through the water bearing strata into impervious ground-the freeze hole pattern being concentric with the shaft and 31-ft diam. The holes were cased with pipe closed on the bottom end. Smaller tubes were placed inside these casings and connected to a header supplying chilled brine from a refrigeration plant. The brine descended in the tubing to the bottom of the hole and ascended through the annular space between the two pipes to the top of the casing; flowed into the return header and back to the refrigeration plant. C.: Papers of Collins, Vogt, DeLaunay, etc.-Mr. Collins tells us about facts in the veins of Cornwall that suggest secondary sulphide-enrichment is highly interesting; and I am free to confess that I have not studied the literature of that region as fully as I should have done. Nevertheless, even if it had been as familiar to me as it is to Mr. Collins, I should probably have hesitated to draw theoretical conclusions without having seen the mines myself; for the personal equation and the point of view of the observer play, perhaps, a larger part in the study of ore-deposits than in that of any other natural phenomena. One important purpose of my paper, and its publication at the time of the Washington meeting, was to call forth remarks from other geologists upon deposits with which they were personally familiar, or to lead them to re-examine such deposits with the idea of secondary enrichment in mind. Mr. Collins's remarks on Rio Tinto, which he has the advantage of personally knowing, are also interesting. With regard, however, to his suggestion-advanced as an apparent argument against our theory-that the re-precipitation of copper from cupric sulphate solution by pyrite can hardly take place there, since it would upset the commercial process, I would remark that, while he is undoubtedly right as to the fact, it does not militate against the reduction and re-precipitation of cupric sulphate in veins; since on the surface, as at Rio Tinto, there is free access of air, and consequently an excess of ferric sulphate, whereas in depth the ferric sulphate would have been mostly reduced to ferrous sulphate, and (there being no excess of acid to hold it in solution) the small amount of copper in the presence of an excess of iron sulphide would be precipitated either as sulphide or as native copper. To Professor Vogt's analogous remarks, that in his experience sulphuric acid is formed only in subordinate amount in the attack of sulphides by ferric sulphate, I would say that Dr.

The experimental phase behavior of several field gas-condensate systems, one field volatile oil system, and a series of synthetic systems having gas-oil ratios from 2,000 to 20,000 scf/bbl stock tank oil was measured. The data were used to calculate the depletion performance of the field systems at their respective reservoir temperatures and of the synthetic systems at various temperatures. The results of the performance calculations were used to prepare correlations of total stock tank oil and separator gas in-place, and the amount of each recovered by primary depletion. Data needed to use the correlations are initial gas-oil ratio, initial tank oil gravity, reservoir temperature and reservoir pressure. The correlations presented should be useful for estiinating recovery from reservoirs producing volatile oils or rich gas condensates having gas-oil ratios from about 2,000 to 30,000 scf/bbl of stock tank oil. INTRODUCTION Prediction of depletion performance for gas-condensate reservoirs usually requires extensive laboratory work or lengthy phase-behavior calculations. For many small gas-condensate bearing zones the expense of such work is often not justified. Furthermore, where large holdings are involved, it is useful to have estimates of future oil and gas production in advance of the results of a laboratory analysis, even if such work is ultimately planned. For these reasons, it would be of value to have a method for rapidly estimating the depletion performance of gas-condensate reservoirs from the type of field data usually available. Few data on the reservoir depletion performance are available for the purpose of developing correlations. The increasing number of gas-condensate discoveries and the advent of high-speed computers have stimulated the development of methods for predicting performance. Such calculated performance data have been shown to be reliable and are becoming accepted as a basis for reserve estimates and for engineering studies. It therefore seems satisfactory to use results of performance predictions themselves for the purpose of developing the desired correlations. Such an approach is described in this paper. Several rich natural gas-condensate systems (gas-oil ratios of from about 3,600 to 60,000 scf/bbl) and one natural volatile oil system were studied (2,363 scf/bbl). In addition, to provide a more systematic basis for correlating purposes, a series of related, synthetic reservoir fluid mixtures was also studied (GOR's from about 2,000 to 25,000 scf/bbl). The purpose of this paper is to show how the recovery of oil and gas by primary depletion may be estimated from surface gas-oil ratio, reservoir temperature and pressure, and tank oil gravity. procedure Experiments Companion samples of gas and oil were collected from the high pressure separators in nine different fields at the time of their discovery. The production of crude oil in the United States is exceeding consumption by one-quarter million barrels per day and, with the possibilities of West Texas, this condition of overproduction, unless controlled, is likely to continue for some time. The resulting low price of oil has caused the operator to observe closely his lease operating costs. The installation of more efficient and reliable machinery has followed and it can well be said that the art of producing oil is on the threshold of a new era. In this advancement electricity has played a leading part. This paper covers only the problem of electricity as applied to lease operation and does not consider other phases of the industry, such as drilling and pipe-line pumping, in which electric power has been utilized economically. In considering electrification of pumping wells, the first question the operator asks is whether or not his costs will be reduced and the second question is whether or not the production will be increased. The third question, although in effect it is closely allied to the first, is the cost of power. The last question can be answered only after a thorough analysis of operating conditions and a study of the power rates prevailing in the particular field under consideration. Within the past few years, the power companies have realized the desirability of a steady 24-hr, pumping load, have made their rates for oil-field service particularly attractive, and in general have shown splendid cooperation in assisting the oil companies in the satisfactory application of electric power to their leases. When everything is taken into consideration, the first cost is practically the same for electric drive as for gas engines when pumping on the beam with individual motors. This cost, at prevailing prices, should aver-age approximately $2200 to $2400 per installation when using 15 to 35-hp., two-speed pumping equipment, including motor and control, countershaft, motor house, belt, installation charges, and a prorated portion of the cost of transmission lines and transformers for serving a number of wells. Since there is practically no difference in the cost of the two installations, it is evident that electricity, to justify its consideration, must have a lower operating cost or produce more oil.

THE interpretation of notched-bar impact results has been a matter of controversy since the introduction of more or less standard tests by Fremont,1 Charpy2 and others at the turn of the century. Many investigators3-l1 have contributed to the understanding of the significance of such tests. Several symposiums12,13 have been held with the express purpose of discussing the significance and interpretation of the impact tests. It is not the purpose of this paper to review all these contributions to the development of the knowledge on this subject, but rather to present an interpretation of notched-bar impact tests that appears to be in agreement with the available published data. Fundamentally, the interpretation discussed in this DaDer of the brittle failure of some steels in notched-bar impact test is similar to the qualitative analysis presented by Ludwik3 in the 1920's. Essentially, Ludwik stated that the function of the notch was to increase the tensile stress necessary for yielding, and that brittle failure occurred when the stress necessary for yielding exceeded the normal stress required for fracture (with no plastic de- formation). Ludwik, however, had no means of measuring this normal stress necessary for failure of a plastically* undeformed metal, therefore he could not extend his interpretation beyond the qualitative stage. Kuntze14 and recently MC- Adam15 attempted to determine the effect of deformation on the stress necessary for fracture by testing, in tension, specimens notched to various depths and angles. Because of the uncertainties in Kuntze's (and RlcAdam's) analysis of the stresses (which have been pointed out by SachsI6) and the inherent nonuniformity in the stress distribution in notched bars, the results of such investigations are difficult to interpret. A more direct method of measuring the effect of deformation on the fracture stress was suggested in previous papers17-l8 and has been utilized in the present investigation. The present paper concerns itself primarily with the behavior of notched impact specimens. The effects of strain rate, temperature, and stress distribution, which are discussed with reference to the impact specimen, apply just as well to the behavior of metal at the bases of notches in any engineering structure. All that is necessary is to determine the stress distribution in the structure at the base of the notches.

PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. SINCE the first applications of cyanidation to silver ores about 1906, treatment of ores in the Pachuca district has been entirely by straight cyanidation. Until about the year 1921, Real del Monte removed a sulphide concentrate (largely pyrite) by tabling in the cyanidation grinding circuit. The ores milled prior to the year 1935 were dry ores, ideal for cyanidation, and yielded 90 pct of the silver and 92 pct of the gold. Since 1934 there has been a notable increase in the refractivity to cyanidation of the average ores received by the mill. Tonnages of the former amenable ores have gradually been replaced by tonnages of more refractory ones, so that present average recoveries have fallen to 83 pct of the silver and 90 pct of the gold. During this period there has also been an increase in the content of base metal sulphides' in many of the ores although this increase is not always directly related to the increased refractivity. Since March 1950, the Cia. de Real del Monte has been developing a flotation treatment for some-of its ores before cyanidation. Suitability for flotation is judged not only by the base metal content, but also by the amount of additional recovery of silver and gold made possible by the combined treatment. Selection and segregation of ores most suitable for flotation before cyanidation is a difficult problem for the mines, and the best that can be done is a compromise that leaves much to be desired. Development of Pre-cyanidation Flotation at Real del Monte Much laboratory work has been done on flotation of ores from the Pachuca district, however, the data could not supply reliable information on the many factors connected with the economics of low-base metal-high silver ores. Pilot plant operations would be required. Pilot plant facilities were made available in March 1950, when it became necessary to close down Loreto's 100 ton per day selective flotation plant because of exhausted ore supply. The results of the 100-ton pilot plant tests indicated that a large part of our tonnage of cyanidation ores could be profitably treated by flotation, and a tonnage of 1100 tons per day was selected as the maximum tonnage of ore that the mines were likely to deliver, and because this tonnage fitted with the grinding capacity of this circuit. Equipment was ordered for the production of a single flotation concentrate. The conception of flotation before cyanidation, at that time, was the production of a single concentrate to be shipped to the lead smelter. The 100-ton pilot plant was immediately increased to 350 tons by installing additional flotation cells.. This. plant was operated continuously until the 1100ton plant was put in operation in January 1951. The Institute is to be congratulated that a man who is already so much engaged should be willing to assume the further responsibility of guiding the Institute's Ship of state during the ensuing year. Louis Davidson Ricketts, who is brother of Professor Palmer or Chamberlaine Ricketts, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was born at Elkton, Md., Dec. 19. 1859, was graduated from Princeton University in 1881 with the degree, Bachelor of Science, chosen a Fellow in Chemistry and W. S. Ward Fellow in Economic Geology, and after two years' study given the degree Doctor of Science. Following the completion of Iris work at Princeton, Dr. Ricketts went to Colorado and started to work as a mine surveyor. For the 15 years following, his time was chiefly occupied in reconnaissance work, geological work and mine examination. From 1887 to 1890 Dr. Ricketts was Geologist for Wyoming, and at, the end of that period transferred his operations to the Southwest. where he has since been steadily engaged in large mining projects. He was identified with the acquisition of the property now owned by the Moctezuma Copper Co., a , subsidiary of Phelps, Dodge & Co., at Nacozari, Sonora, Mex. From 1899 to 1901 he was General Manager of the property and during his administration the concentrator and reduction works were completed and the mines put on a dividend-paying basis

THE resistance to motion offered by mine cars is caused principally by: Rolling friction, flange friction, bending rails, bearing friction and wind resistance. With proper construction and with a fair amount of attention and care, that is, under favorable conditions, the first three items cannot be greatly improved. The wind resistance ordinarily is negligible on account of the slow speeds commonly used. The bearing friction, however, is a variable item, depending upon the design, the bearing material, the lubrication, the location (whether in wheel-hub or on car-body) and the alignment. Under the most favorable conditions the bearing friction will reach a lowest possible value. By the development of a successful anti-friction mine-car bearing this lowest value has been improved to such an extent as to affect the whole system of mine haulage. After being satisfied of their durability and certainty of operation, any investigation into the advantages of anti-friction bearings for mine cars will have to be based upon reliable information as to the saving in power of such bearings. While numerous tests have been made in this direction, the results have not always been convincing, principally because of the rather crude methods that were employed. These crude methods are the main cause of the wide variations existing in regard to the exact amount of the frictional resistance. Frequently an ordinary spring balance is used and the pull necessary to move a certain car or train of cars is obtained by a number of readings. Such spring balances necessarily have a coarse graduation and the continuous vibration and fluctuations to which they are subjected make them highly dependent upon the individual observer. Further, they must be frequently calibrated. Sometimes these tests were made without regard to acceleration, speed or even grade.

Activity in Oklahoma oil fields made 1937 one of the best years since 1926. During the year, 3454 wells were completed, an increase of about 25 per cent over the year 1936. Purchasers reports filed with the Corporation Commission of the State of Oklahoma showed a total of 221,842,-788 bbl. of oil purchased from leases in 1937, an increase of about 10 per cent over 1936. The assembly of a complete table of all of the oil fields in Oklahoma has not yet been achieved. Many of the early records of operators and pipe-line companies are incomplete. Table 1 includes all of the new fields, and this year there has been added work done covering pools discovered in previous years, so that most of the important fields in the state of Oklahoma are included therein. The outstanding development of the year was the discovery of the producing horizon classified as the Wilcox in western Payne County by the Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation on a unitized block in sec. 18, Tp. 18 N., R. 2 E. This block is operated hy the Mid-Continent and owned in conjunction with the Carter Oil Co., Transwestern Oil Co. and Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co. Another important development of the year was the extension of the deep zone in the old Fox-Milroy area of Carter and Stephens Counties. Some of the other discoveries made during the year 1937 are South Cromwell, discovered by Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co.; Cromwell extension of the Fitts pool in Pontotoc County; discovery of the Langston area in Logan County; discovery of the Sporn area in Lincoln County by Skelly Oil Co. and the discovery of the North Wellston area in Lincoln County by Standard Oil & Gas Co. Table 2 shows the new oil areas discovered in Oklahoma during the year 1937 and areas that were discovered in 1936 but developed in 1937. A FEW metals have been known since the dawn of history. Many have been prepared in quantity only within the present century. Zinc falls into an intermediate category, although there is some evidence of its existence in elemental form in Greece as early as the third or fourth century B.C. Nevertheless, the first important use of zinc antedates the earliest records of civilization. This first use was in the alloy, brass, which is roughly one third zinc. This continues to the present time as one of the major uses of the metal. The first production of brass, in light of present knowledge, was perhaps one of the 'most romantic and fortuitous of technical discoveries. Copper, the major constituent of brass, had been given to man by Nature in the native state; that is, as lumps of fairly pure copper. The art of melting and working it had been learned. But zinc does not occur as the metal in Nature and even if some early metallurgist happened to heat zinc ore with a reducing agent, the reduced metallic zinc passed off as vapor and was lost. Doubtless some early coppersmith, melting copper in accidental contact with zinc ore, reduced the zinc, and the vapor was absorbed by the molten copper. Its color, hardness, and other properties were thus wonder- fully changed. And so the earliest metallic form of zinc, as nearly as we can deduce, existed in the alloy brass. Pvestrained Ferrovac E iron has been neutron-irradiated at approximately 90°C to an integrated flux of 1020 nut (E > 0.82 mev]. The irradiation was found to produce an incveased temperature dependence of the flow stress in addition to a greatly increased athemal stress. Measurements of the flow stress and stress relaxation, from which the activation volume and activation energy for slip were deduced, show that neutron irradiation changes the rate -controlling slip process to one based on dislocation interactions with tetragonal distortions which are Produced around submicroscopic interstitial loops in the lattice. The study indicates that without prestraining prior to irradiation the chances of detecting a change in the rate -controlling slip process are greatly reduced because in the initial stages of slip a substantial fraction of the radiation defects are swept out of the slip plane by gliding dislocations. Thus, activation parameters which are subsequently measured are representative of a greatly reduced defect density and would not differ appreciably from those for unirradi-ated material. The large increase in the athermal component of the flow stress is probably connected with the presence of depleted zones in the lattice which are introduced by irradiation. ALTHOUGH fast neutron-irradiation has not been observed to markedly alter the activation parameters for slip in bcc metals,' small but significant changes do occur. Most experimenters agree that irradiation predominantly increases the athermal component of the yield stress.'-= In addition to this, Laidler and smidt7 have shown that in iron irradiated to 5 X 10" nvt and molybdenum irradiated to 10" nvt, changes occur in the activation volumes for slip. A similar conclusion has been reached by Milasin and Malkin8 for irradiated iron. Work by Ohr et a1.5 shows that for Ferrovac E iron, irradiated to 1.2 X 1016 nvt, small increases in the activation energy for slip also occur. So far these changes in the activation parameters have not been explained on a firm theoretical basis. One important factor which would minimize the chances of detecting a change in the slip mechanism upon irradiation is the presence of "channeling" which has been observed in molybdenum,9 niobium,10 and iron.11These channels are formed by gliding dislocations which sweep irradiation defects out of the active slip planes and thereby create zones in which continued dislocation motion is encouraged. The activation parameters for the dislocations gliding in the defect-free channels would, therefore, be similar to those for unirradiated iron and a change in the rate-controlling slip process would be difficult to detect. In the present work, an attempt has been made to reduce the effect of uneven deformation on the measured activation parameters for slip in neutron-irradiated Ferrovac E iron polycrystals, so that a more realistic assessment of the effects of neutron-irradiation could be made. Primarily, the experiments involve the irradiation of specimens which had been prestrained to 9 pct elongation at room temperature prior to insertion into the reactor. It was hoped that the introduction of a large number of evenly distributed dislocations would substantially decrease any channeling effect which might otherwise occur. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting material was vacuum-melted Ferrovac E iron, an analysis of which is given in Table I. The standard tensile specimen had a gage length of 1.125 in., a cross-sectional diameter of 0.120 in., and a re-crystallized grain size of 1.2 x 10-3 in. All tensile tests were conducted on a floor model "Instron" tensile machine at a strain rate of 3 x 10-4 per sec. The irradiation of the prestrained specimens was performed in the Brookhaven High Flux Beam Reactor to an integrated flux of 1020 nvt (E > 0.82 mev) at a temperature of about 90°C. All specimens were excap-sulated in high-purity aluminum sheaths which were lightly swaged around the samples to ensure good thermal contact. Subsequent measurements on the irradiated specimens showed that within experimental accuracy the swaging had not deformed them. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the flow stresses for a series of unirradiated control samples. ORDERING reactions of Fe-Si compositions in the a region have been mentioned in a number of review articles.7-8 However, little is known in regard to the critical temperature, T at which this transformation takes place. Greiner and Stoughton,' in a study of the constitution of iron-rich Fe-Si alloys below 800°C, placed the onset of order at a composition of about 4 to 5 wt pct (7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct) Si. They observed that at this composition the ductility and strength begin to decrease sharply and brittleness develops. During X-ray studies they observed only the appearance of superlattice lines for compositions containing 12.5 atomic pct Si. More recent X-ray diffraction studies- etected the appearance of superstructure lines (corresponding to the calculated positions of [Ill] and [ZOO] reflections) for alloys containing 9.5 atomic pct. This fact confirms Greiner and Stoughton's original hypothesis in regard to the onset of order at compositions containing about 7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct Si. The physical properties.of Fe-Si alloys containing more than 10 atomic pct Si have been studied only to a limited extent. Their extreme brittleness and difficulties of sample preparation render them of little industrial use in comparison with alloys in the 0 to 10 atomic pct Si range. The properties of Fe-Si alloys reported to date are mostly properties measured at room temperature on ordered compositions It appears that because of experimental difficulties fully disordered alloys could not be produced in the critical composition ranges and their properties could therefore not be reported. In Figs. la, lb, and lc, a summary of physical properties of Fe-Si alloys, measured during recent investigations of the influence of silicon additions to iron, is presented. No mention of determination of the critical temperature, T for disorder could be found in the literature. The following is an account of work done in an attempt to: 1) produce the disordered state of various Fe-Si alloys and establish the critical temperature, T for disordering, and 2) compare the electrical and thermal conductivity characteristics of the ordered and disordered phases as functions of composition. Materials, Preparation of Test Samples, and Testing Methods Fe-Si alloys with high silicon contents (about 10 atomic pct) are usually prepared using powder metallurgy techniques. This method insures accurate compositions and high purity through the use of protective atmospheres during solid state diffusion alloying of the mixed powders."" Iron and silicon powders were mixed in the desired proportions, cold or hot pressed, and then homogenized at 1150°C for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hr under a protective getter and in a hydrogen atmosphere. Fully homogenized samples were quenched in water from various and successively higher temperatures to establish the critical temperature for disorder. Temperatures were determined using Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouples in contact with the test samples. Test bars were approximately 0.6x1.25x7.5 cm. Electrical measurements were made at room temperature by determining the potential drop over a 1.5 cm span for a current of 10 amp. Densities of the samples were determined by immersion. High temperature electrical resistivities were measured using previously described techniques.'" Specific heat conductivity up to 200°C was measured by heating one end of the test bar and water-cooling the other; heat conductivity was then obtained by subtracting the rate at which heat entered the water from the

WHEN I was an undergraduate at the Columbia School of Mines, the mining curriculum was subdivided into two major branches's known respectively as the Metallurgical and the Geological Options, which diverged rather widely as the course progressed. When I duly elected the Geological Option, I believed, I am sure, that this divergence would continue throughout the years. The facts have proved otherwise. The mining industry is a closely knit entity in which the search for its raw materials, called mining geology, cannot be separated from the conversion of these raw materials into marketable form, called metallurgy. The mining geologist searches for materials which the metallurgist can utilize, and only such; and whenever an advance in metallurgy opens the gates for new materials, the geologist's problem is correspondingly modified. No better instance of this relationship can be given than that seen in the Salt Lake region in recent years. Our mineral industry here is of long standing. The three principal tributary districts, Bingham, Park City and Tintic, were discovered in the 1860's and have been vigorously and intelligently developed for many decades. Their production has made the Salt Lake valley one of the world's great smelting centers. The maintenance of this industry has for years depended upon the continual development of new orebodies to take the place of those being extracted. Intensive exploration in the old districts has been supplemented by prospecting in outlying districts of lesser prominence. . Many new orebodies have been discovered, such as those of the Daly West, Silver King, and Judge mines in Park City, the Utah Apex in Bingham, and the Sioux, Colorado Chief Consolidated and Tintic Standard in Tintic. New mines in other districts have been discovered also, but without affecting the dominance of the three major districts. In all cases discoveries, to be of value, had to be of ore amenable to treatment in the available metallurgical plants. This meant that, for the most part, zincy ores, both oxide and sulfide, must remain untouched, and also that ores high in iron and ores high in silica had a fictitious value, either high or low, set by the balance of these
