A FEW metals have been known since the dawn of history. Many have been prepared in quantity only within the present century. Zinc falls into an intermediate category, although there is some evidence of its existence in elemental form in Greece as early as the third or fourth century B.C. Nevertheless, the first important use of zinc antedates the earliest records of civilization. This first use was in the alloy, brass, which is roughly one third zinc. This continues to the present time as one of the major uses of the metal. The first production of brass, in light of present knowledge, was perhaps one of the 'most romantic and fortuitous of technical discoveries. Copper, the major constituent of brass, had been given to man by Nature in the native state; that is, as lumps of fairly pure copper. The art of melting and working it had been learned. But zinc does not occur as the metal in Nature and even if some early metallurgist happened to heat zinc ore with a reducing agent, the reduced metallic zinc passed off as vapor and was lost. Doubtless some early coppersmith, melting copper in accidental contact with zinc ore, reduced the zinc, and the vapor was absorbed by the molten copper. Its color, hardness, and other properties were thus wonder- fully changed. And so the earliest metallic form of zinc, as nearly as we can deduce, existed in the alloy brass. The accurate assessment of the in situ deformability of rock masses is very important in the de and construction of underground openings for mining and geotechnical engineering applications. This paper presents a method and device for determining the in situ deformability of rock masses by relating the borehole jack load to the diametral displacements at a number of orientations around the borehole wall. The method called mu1tiple measurement method include the steps in which: a) diametral displacement sensors are installed at different orientations around the borehole to measure the changes in length of various diameters of the borehole; b) a uniaxial load is applied on two opposed octants of the borehole wall, and; c) using elastic theory and assuming a reasonable value for the Poisson's Ratio of the rock mass, the in situ deformability of the surrounding rock materials is determined from the measured diametral displacements and applied unidirectional load. The multiple measurement method has a significant advantage over existing methods since it provides several independent data in a single test from which to calculate the in situ deformability of the rock mass. The multiple data provide a check and counter check on the reliability and accuracy of the various measurements. The multiple data would also provide a means of quantifying the degree of fissuring on the borehole wall. Information on the degree of fissuring is very important in numerical modeling of rock masses.

Pilot flooding is one method of evaluating a proposed secondary recovery project. However, the amount and rate of oil recovery from an unconfined pilot area is not usually the same as from an equal area in a large-scale flood. This is true because fluids are free to move across the boundary of a pilot area. The result is that some of the oil produced in a pilot flood may come from outside the designated area and some of the displaced oil may leave the pilot area completely. This paper presents the results of fluid-flow model studies on a five-spot pilot flood. Mobility ratios between 0.1 and to have been studied. The effects of changing the ratio of injection to withdrawal rates are shown. INTRODUCTION A small-scale field test, or pilot flood, is an accepted method for evaluating the applicability of a secondary recovery operation and the economic potential of that operation for a reservoir. The pilot flood is carried on in the same manner, with the same injected materials and at the same pressures as would be used were the secondary recovery program to be expanded to a larger area of the field or to the entire field. If the reservoir fluid and reservoir rock properties are the same in the pilot area as in the rest of the reservoir, the production, injection and other pertinent data associated with the pilot test will represent and measure what should be expected from a full-scale development of this secondary recovery program. There is one major exception which, unfortunately, has been overlooked by many and which has been awaiting quantitative definition. This is the sweep-out pattern the reservoir engineer must use in interpreting the pilot flood and in extrapolating it to the full-scale development. The sweep-out area in a pilot flood is not contained within the five-spot pattern. Further, there is oil flow into and/or out of the five-spot during a pilot test. Thus, production data from pilots must be interpreted with this different flow system and sweep pattern in mind. We have studied the sweep-out pattern that will exist for some conditions of operation of pilot flooding a single five-spot (four injection wells and one producer). In our study, reported here, we have assumed that the reservoir is relatively homogeneous and of uniform thickness in the pilot area. The results of this study en-able the engineer to predict the recovery, injection requirements and project life for a full-scale operation from the pilot flooding data. The effects of various injection to withdrawal-rate ratios and mobility ratios in a relatively gas-free (10 per cent pore volume or less) system are shown. Experimental Method The technique used in this study was the same as that for the X-ray shadowgraph studies of sweep-out pattern efficiencies.' The model of the pilot and surrounding area was made from a uniform packing of round-grain sand consolidated with an epoxy resin. Fig. 1 shows the relation between the model and the pilot area. ORDERING reactions of Fe-Si compositions in the a region have been mentioned in a number of review articles.7-8 However, little is known in regard to the critical temperature, T at which this transformation takes place. Greiner and Stoughton,' in a study of the constitution of iron-rich Fe-Si alloys below 800°C, placed the onset of order at a composition of about 4 to 5 wt pct (7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct) Si. They observed that at this composition the ductility and strength begin to decrease sharply and brittleness develops. During X-ray studies they observed only the appearance of superlattice lines for compositions containing 12.5 atomic pct Si. More recent X-ray diffraction studies- etected the appearance of superstructure lines (corresponding to the calculated positions of [Ill] and [ZOO] reflections) for alloys containing 9.5 atomic pct. This fact confirms Greiner and Stoughton's original hypothesis in regard to the onset of order at compositions containing about 7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct Si. The physical properties.of Fe-Si alloys containing more than 10 atomic pct Si have been studied only to a limited extent. Their extreme brittleness and difficulties of sample preparation render them of little industrial use in comparison with alloys in the 0 to 10 atomic pct Si range. The properties of Fe-Si alloys reported to date are mostly properties measured at room temperature on ordered compositions It appears that because of experimental difficulties fully disordered alloys could not be produced in the critical composition ranges and their properties could therefore not be reported. In Figs. la, lb, and lc, a summary of physical properties of Fe-Si alloys, measured during recent investigations of the influence of silicon additions to iron, is presented. No mention of determination of the critical temperature, T for disorder could be found in the literature. The following is an account of work done in an attempt to: 1) produce the disordered state of various Fe-Si alloys and establish the critical temperature, T for disordering, and 2) compare the electrical and thermal conductivity characteristics of the ordered and disordered phases as functions of composition. Materials, Preparation of Test Samples, and Testing Methods Fe-Si alloys with high silicon contents (about 10 atomic pct) are usually prepared using powder metallurgy techniques. This method insures accurate compositions and high purity through the use of protective atmospheres during solid state diffusion alloying of the mixed powders."" Iron and silicon powders were mixed in the desired proportions, cold or hot pressed, and then homogenized at 1150°C for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hr under a protective getter and in a hydrogen atmosphere. Fully homogenized samples were quenched in water from various and successively higher temperatures to establish the critical temperature for disorder. Temperatures were determined using Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouples in contact with the test samples. Test bars were approximately 0.6x1.25x7.5 cm. Electrical measurements were made at room temperature by determining the potential drop over a 1.5 cm span for a current of 10 amp. Densities of the samples were determined by immersion. High temperature electrical resistivities were measured using previously described techniques.'" Specific heat conductivity up to 200°C was measured by heating one end of the test bar and water-cooling the other; heat conductivity was then obtained by subtracting the rate at which heat entered the water from the

The purpose of this paper is to convince the managers of silvermills that their customary reports in regard to the percentage of silver saved are far from the truth. It may be unpleasant for them to have the proofs of this fact brought before the public, and for this rezson the author refrains from giving the names of the mines and mills from which the statistics here recorded were obtained. It may be asked: What is gained by informing the stockholders of our silver-mines that they receive incorrect reports? Will this increase their dividends or lessen their assessments? In the first place, it is always better to publish honest facts than fiction. In the second place, many superintendents believe in the correctness of their reports, and have no idea how much they deceive themselves. Finally, the knowledge that hitherto unexpected losses of silver take place may lead to the adoption of methods by which these losses are greatly reduced. These remarks refer also to smelting-works. The present paper, however, is concerned exclusively with amalgamation and lixiviation. The first and most important error is found in the inaccuracy of the commercial assay; the second in the incorrect sampling of tailings in amalgamation. Further, mills not doing custom-work, but reducing exclusively ores from mines to which the mills belong, are in the habit of weighing the ore only approximately and without making moisture-tests. Thus, a correct basis for calculating the actual percentage of silver extracted is lacking. The superintendent, then, finds it convenient to report the apparent extraction, i.e., the extraction indicated by comparing the value of the roasted ore, minus soluble salts, with the value of the tailings. How many errors are thereby committed it is not necessary to point out.

Description of Quarry THE shale used at the Renton plant of the Denny-Renton Clay Coal Co., for the manufacture of vitrified paving brick occurs in a hill rising from 200 to 300 ft. above the level of the valley in which the plant is situated. The shale deposit, which is of unknown thickness pitches about 10° to the southeast. The 150-ft. face worked extends approximately east and west, so that the clip, as shown by the photograph, is to the left and into the hill. The shale is overlain with about 50 ft. of gravel, 70 ft. of clay, and 30 ft. of mixed loam and gravel, making altogether from 125 to 150 ft. of overburden. Disposal of Overburden The overburden is removed by sluicing. For this purpose a No. 2 Joshua Hendy giant is used, throwing a 12-in. stream', and having 60 lb. pressure at the nozzle. The water is drawn through an 8-in. pipe from Cedar river, about 1,000 ft. distant, by means of a Worthington four-stage centrifugal pump, direct connected with a 100-h.p. motor placed just south of the factory, and 1,500 ft. from the nozzle This plant handles the material satisfactorily to a height of about 75 ft. above the level of the top of the shale. When the higher levels are worked, an auxiliary plant consisting of a four-stage Byron Jackson centrifugal pump with a 100-h.p., belt-connected motor, is thrown into the system. This plant is situated on top of the shale and can be discerned at the extreme right of the trestle work in Fig. 1.

Proper control of the moisture content of natural gas is essential to reliable operation of gas transmission and distribution facilities serving northern markets. The moisture content of natural gas is usually determined by dew point measurement at the existing pressure. For any gas of constant moistrire content. the dew Point varies with the pressure. A correlation of the data of several investigators is prezented in graphical form by the authors. These data were correlated by the authors and F. M. Townsend, C. C. Tsao. M. I). Rogers. Jr.. and J. A. Porter. graduate students in chemi(.a1 engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Of articular interest are the hitherto unpublished low temperature data observed by Wickliffe Skinner. Jr., which are included in this correlation. PRESENTATION OF DATA The problem of interpreting water dew points, or saturation temperatures. of natural gas in terms of specific moisture con-tent has increased in importance during the past decade bec.arl.;e of extensive development.; in the transmission and petro-chemical phases of the natural gas industry. Virtually all gas transported to northern and eastern markets must be dehydrated to a low water vapor content to prevent hydrate formation in transmission and distribution lines and resultant interruption.; in gas deliveries. Complete dehydration is required in certain phases of tile petro-chemical industry involving low-temperature operations. It is a well-known fact that the water vapor content of pure hydrocarbon vapors and their mixtures at superatmospheric pressures cannot be predicted with accuracy by assuming validity of the ideal gas laws." Earlier interest in the general problem was concentrated on the water vapor content of pure hydrocarhons and hydrocarbon mixtures in the pressure and temperature ranges common to gas and oil producing reservoirs in order to obtain fundamental data for the improvement of production techniques and the furtherance of reservoir studies. Excellent data are published for pressures ranging from atmospheric to 10,000 psig and for temperatures ranging from 100° to 460° F4,9,10,11 and are found to be in close agreement. However, experimental data at high pressures and temperatures below 100°F are comparatively limited in scope. Experimental data in the lower temperature range have been reported by Laulhere and Briscoe.8 Deaton, et al,2,3 Hammerscllmidt,5,6 and wade," In general, the pressures employed in these investigations ranged from atmospheric to 1.000 psig while temperatures ranged from 32° to 120°F; i.e., the usual conditions encountered in gas transmission line operations, Additional data were reported by Russell, et al,12 at pressures as high as 2.000 psig and covering a rather narrow atmospheric temperature range. In 1947, Hammerschmidt published a correlation of all available data,' in which the water vapor content of gases at saturation. under high pressure and low temperature. was predicted by extrapolation. In 1948, Wickliffe Skinner. Jr.. presented data on the moisture content of a low nitrogen content gas at low temperature and at pressures ranging upward to 1.500 psia.1-3 Comparison of Skinner's experimental data with the extrapolated data of Hammerscllmidt revealed an appreciable variation in the lower temperature range. emphasizing the need for a new correlation which would rely on Skinner's data at lower temperatures. Careful scrutiny of available data suggested that presence of an appreciable quantity of nitrogen in a gas mixture may affect its saturated moisture content so that data obtained from gases with more than three per cent nitrogen were not used in this correlation. CORRELATION OF DATA Data employed in this correlation are presented in Table I. The data of Dodson and Standing.4 McKetta and Katz,9 and Olds, Sage and Lacey10 were compared and found to be in close agreement so that the data of Olds. et al, re-plotted in a more convenient form by the Humble Oil and Refining Co.,' were used for temperatures of 100°F and above. Skinner's data were used for temperatures below 40°F. Between these intermediate temperature limits, the data of Hammerschmidt.7 Wade" and extrapolated data of Olds. et al.1 were tabulated

The hardening of annealed copper during fatigue testing appears to be independent of the applied stress and to occur largely within the first 4000 cycles. Copper hardened by fatigue is more resistant to annealing than copper hardened by static means, and softens by a multistage process. Creep studies at 300°C show that copper hardened by fatigue also has greater resistance to creep than statically hardened copper. Some theoretical explanations are discussed. RECENT interest in the behavior of metals subjected to fatigue stems from observations of phenomena which could not be explained by current theories of the structure of metals. In 1953 Bullen et al.l showed that the hardening caused by fatigue at low stresses did not cause severe bending of the lattice as did hardening by static methods. This was later confirmed by Wood, 'and Broom and Ham.3 Clarebrough et al4 showed that as the stress level used in fatigue hardening was increased, bending of the lattice was introduced, eventually approaching that of metals deformed by conventional cold-working methods. The type of hardening introduced by fatigue has other interesting characteristics. Kemsley5 showed that copper fractured by fatigue at low stresses resisted annealing as compared to copper hardened an equal amount by static means. The work of Clarebrough etal, shows that the manner of energy release during annealing differs for fatigue-hardened and statically hardened metal in both magnitude and temperature range of release. In addition to hardening of the lattice, fatigue has been shown to cause softening in materials previously hardened by static methods,5 and also in age-hardened alloys.7 The superposition of a small fatigue stress on the static loading of high-temperature alloys has been shown to increase their resistance to creep.' The present work was an attempt to determine the relationship between fatigue hardening, resistance to annealing, and the creep properties of pure copper. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM The program described here was designed to answer three questions: 1) Can stress-cycle combinations well below the failure values give significant increases in hardness? 2) Does hardening, under different stress-cycle combinations, give increase resistance to annealing? And if so— 3) Does superior resistance to annealing confer superior creep properties over statically hardened material? Three-quarter hard OFHC copper was annealed in vacuo at 550°C for 1 hr to produce a strain-free material having a fine grain size and uniform hardness. (The standard deviation of the mean hardness of the annealed samples was less than + 1.9 Dpn). Annealing was performed after machining the fatigue specimens so as to avoid work-hardened surfaces. Jigs were used to avoid distortion. The fatigue properties of the annealed copper were determined using an accurately aligned Baldwin-Sonntag SF1-U machine operating at 1800 cycles per min. This limited the minimum number of cycles which could be examined to about 4000 stress reversals. Since failure resulted in specimen damage, hardness increase with number of cycles was measured by testing specimens fatigued to different fractions of the failure values. The results are shown in Fig. 1, and are superimposed on the S-N curve of the copper in Fig. 2. The resistance to annealing of fatigue-hardened material was compared to that of material hardened by uniaxial tensile straining. Specimens hardened to equal values by both methods were progressively annealed for 1 hr at temperature in vacuo. After each annealing treatment the hardness was measured using a Leitz Durimet hardness tester with a 500-g load. At least five tests were made for each hardness determination. The standard deviation for individual specimens varied from 0.26 to 1.48 hardness points. The results are shown in Figs. 3 to 5. The discontinuous nature of the annealing process has been brought out by drawing idealized curves through the data points. This can be justified by the consistency of the results as well as by general agreement with results of Kemsley.5 The creep resistance of fatigue-hardened and

For a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not withstand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950" to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as —75" F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these requirements, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manufacturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But, when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service. A great deal of credit is due to the members of the Boiler Code Committee and also to the members of the Joint A.P.I.-A.S.M.E. Committee, who have formulated codes that insure the safety of the

THE orientation of metal crystals and grains, both large and small,. can be determined conveniently and accurately without the use of X-ray apparatus. This seems to be appreciated by so few metallurgists that it may be useful to explain in detail the method we have found most satis-factory in the laboratory the reflection of light from crystallographic etch pits. This note includes a description of a suitable inexpensive instrument and instructions for etching various metals and for plotting the data. As the stereographic projection is used to facilitate handling the data, this note may be considered as an appendix to an earlier review of the metallurgical uses of the stereographic projection.1 Various methods involving etch pits have been used by other investi-gators, Bridgman's method2 consists of attaching the specimen to a sphere (a transparent sphere is convenient4), holding it at arm's length, and marking a spot on it when it has been turned so that the etch pits reflect light into the eye of the observer from a lamp standing behind him. It has an accuracy of about 2° and is extremely rapid. A greater accuracy can be obtained by having the reflected light fall on a screen, as has been done by Czoehralski, 5 Chalmers,6 and Schubnikov.7 All of these methods have been intended for undeformed single crystals. Tammann and his coworkers"' developed a method for estimating the number of grains in a polycrystalline aggregate having orientations in a given region of the stereographic triangle and thus obtained statistical information about deformation and recrystallization textures. While the method has had some use in recent years,9 it is not applicable to the majority of problems in physical metallurgy. Smith and Mehl10 determined orientations by plotting the directions of the sides of individual etch pits on a stereo-

Discussion of the paper of DR. L. EDELEANU, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2313 to 2332. F. W. BUSHONG,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-This process of extraction is particularly advantageous in the case of Roumanian oil, on account of its high aromatic content. I have prepared a paper, which will appear probably next month in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, describing a series of two-degree fractions of oil from the Nowata field in Oklahoma. I have made extractions with liquid sulphur dioxide in accordance with Dr. Edeleanu's method, and found that the Oklahoma oils, for instance the kerosene fractions, are purified in this way, although the quantity taken out does not at all compare with that taken out of the Roumanian oil. I have made careful analyses of separate fractions, before and after extraction, and they show a very distinct fractional separation-. I like the distinction, brought out by Dr. Day in previous discussions, in regard to oils, rather than oil, and his beautiful illustration of fractionation. Just as fuller's earth, and other clays, will enable us to obtain lower-boiling fractional portions of the oils, and eventually retain a residuum which is hard to get rid of, or to remove, so there is an advantage to be gained by the use of a reagent which begins at the other end by taking out these last constituents first, namely, ozone. I have also analyzed the ozonides and they are derivatives of hydrocarbons very much poorer. in hydrogen than we have heretofore supposed. Similar results have been obtained with Roumanian, Russian, and Italian petroleums. Furthermore, I have prepared ozonides from a fraction of Oklahoma oils, both before and after ex-' traction with liquid sulphur dioxide, and found that the ozonide obtained from the extract is the same as that precipitated out of the original oils. In other words, the residual substance, which the fuller's earth retains, is the one first thrown down by the use of ozone, but it may also be extracted by liquid sulphur dioxide- and be thus separated in apparently unaltered condition. The analysis of this extract corresponds to the formula C15H20, which is surprising, since it is lower in hydrogen content than we have been in the habit of considering among the constituents of our oils. The extract was probably contaminated with other hydro-carbons, but I think it is unquestionable that we must look for hydro-carbons in petroleum which correspond to a formula at least -as low in hydrogen as C15H2o, and possibly even as low as C15H16.

The resistance to motion offered by mine cars is caused principally by: Rolling friction, flange friction, bending rails, bearing friction and wind resistance. With proper construction and with a fair amount of attention and care, that is, under favorable conditions, the first three items cannot be greatly improved. The wind resistance ordinarily is negligible on account of the slow speeds commonly used. The bearing friction, however, is a variable item, depending upon the design, the bearing material, the lubrication, the location (whether in wheel-hub or on car-body) and the alignment. Under the most favorable conditions the bearing friction will reach a lowest possible value. By the development of a successful anti-friction mine-car bearing this lowest value has been improved to such an extent as to affect the whole system of mine haulage. After being satisfied of their durability and certainty of operation, any investigation into the advantages of anti-friction bearings for mine cars will have to be based upon reliable information as to the saving in power of such bearings. While numerous tests have been made in this direction, the results have not always been convincing, principally because of the rather crude methods that were employed. These crude methods are the main cause of the wide variations existing in regard to the exact amount of the frictional resistance. Frequently an ordinary spring balance is used and the pull necessary to move a certain car or train of cars is obtained by a number of readings. Such spring balances necessarily have a coarse graduation and the continuous vibration and fluctuations to which they are subjected make them highly dependent upon the individual observer. Further, they must be frequently calibrated. Sometimes these tests were made without regard to acceleration, speed or even grade. The method of using an electric locomotive as a testing device is perhaps more open to criticism than the spring-balance method, because it introduces additional sources of error: The varying electrical and mechanical losses in the locomotive. Also, such a measurement always includes the power necessary to move the locomotive itself. This means a considerable amount of figuring, and the results due to the various multiplications and corrections may be of little value, for obvious reasons. The Smallwood mine, owned and operated by the Iron Ore Co. of Canada, is one of the largest ore producers in Canada, producing about 15 million tons of crude ore per year. Located in the Labrador Trough near, Labrador City, Newfoundland, the open-pit operation has ore consisting chiefly of specular-hematite, with some magnetite. The magnetite content of the ore as a mineral percentage is small, but it is of considerable importance in ore grading because of its effect upon milling. Being harder than specular-hematite, magnetite increases grinding time and milling costs. Specifically, higher grade magnetite (greater than 15%) usually occurs as fine grains in a fine grained siliceous rock matrix (also as larger octahedra in carbonate bands). This tends to increase the overall breaking strength in the crude ore; consequently, the hourly mill rate and the weight recovery decrease. At the same time, because of its relatively high iron content, the magnetite does contribute to the amount of iron in a block of ore. Were the concentration of the magnetite relatively constant, its presence would be of less consequence, for appropriate adjustments could be made in the milling operations. However, the quantity of magnetite present for any run of ore varies considerably; it is the magnetite prediction for a block of ore that constitutes the greatest problem in grading. THE PRESENT ORE GRADING METHOD Ore for the Smallwood mine is graded by a computerized block grading routine (using 50 x 50 x 45-ft blocks) that applies simple weighted (inverse-distance) averaging to ore grades. The results of the block grading program are not reliable with respect to magnetite concentration. Factors responsible for this poor estimation are (1) the structural setting of the deposit, and (2) mineralogical relationships. Neither of these general factors are given adequate consideration by present methods.

UNEMPLOYMENT no longer finds its cure in pros-perity. Not only is there surplus labor in over-developed industries -like coal -mining, but more and more man, power is being released by technical im-provements in production. A new problem in industry has arisen: What is to be done with the labor dis-pensed with by better methods and more highly de-veloped equipment? Are luxury industries the logical outlet for our new unemployed? There has been a marked decline in employment in the manufacturing industries during 1927. Its extent is shown by the Bureau of Labor Statistics index, which receded from a high of 91.4 in March to 87.3 in October, with an estimated figure of approximately 85 in De-cember. This was a drop between the high and low points in the year of about 7 per cent, which means roughly that at the close of 1927 there were approxi-mately 600,000 fewer persons employed in manufac-turing industries than in March -of 1927, and upward of 400,000 less than in December, 1926. Does this de-cline reflect a swing toward industrial depression? Paradoxically it does not; the cause of unemployment at this time does not lie in a lack of prosperity, but rather is largely traceable to prosperity. Capital has been abundant and has gone back into production in the form of great increases in mechanization and new processing. Management is more than ever on the alert to improve methods, as well as to cut costs through reduction of personnel. Properly applied incentives and employee cooperation also have increased produc-tion per man. A new phenomenon in the industrial world-technological unemployment-is the result. Of course, there are added to those unemployed be-cause of the reasons just considered those affected by the coal strike, the period of shutdown at the Ford plants, and the reduction in expenditures by railroads and public utilities. This whole situation suggests that the problem of unemployment is not entirely solved by ironing out seasonal variations or by achieving business prosperity.

PROGRESS on the earth depends to a large extent upon the rapid inter-change of ideas and commodities between the various nations of the world. The smooth flow of commerce, by which these ideas and com-modities move, is accelerated by accurate and complete maps of the various land and water areas of the earth, The production of accurate maps depends upon a complete knowledge of the figure and dimensions of the object to be charted, therefore a knowledge of the shape of the earth is a prime necessity for accurate charting purposes. Gravity observa-tions were first undertaken to aid in determining the shape of the earth so that the geodetic surveys of its land and water areas might be more accurately connected to form an undistorted map. A large part of the earth's surface is water and it is therefore necessary to get gravity values at sea as well as on land before a complete and accurate figure of the earth can be determined. Dr. F. A. Vening Meinesz, of Holland, was the first scientist to perfect a pendulum instrument that would accurately measure gravity at sea. He had previously developed a multiple pendulum apparatus for measur-ing gravity upon swampy and unstable land areas in Holland and it was therefore quite natural that he should adapt the instrument to give accurate results upon a still more unstable support, the surface of the sea. His instrument as perfected gives satisfactory results when mounted in gimbals on any vessel where the roll and pitch are not more than about 5° and where the vibrations from rotating machinery and wave action are not large enough to cause the pendulums to shift on the knife-edges. This degree of stability can be obtained on surface craft only in protected waters or on very calm days. Therefore, Dr. Meinesz mounted his instrument in a. submarine so that he could submerge below the disturbed surface waters and get the desired stability in nearly any kind of weather by simply diving to greater depths. Most of the gravity-at-sea work has been done with a Meinesz instrument and a very large number of the observations have been made by Dr. Meinesz himself. The strategic importance of the metallic minerals in our industrial economy, and the declining rates of discovery have focused attention on means of exploration for new mineral deposits. A consideration of exploration techniques leads to an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of geophysics as a tool for mining exploration. One means of evaluation will be to compare the use of geophysics in petroleum exploration with its possible uses in mining. Geophysics in Petroleum Exploration During the past twenty years, the petroleum industry has established an effective exploration technique. Geology is the basic tool in those areas where reliable predictions can be made from surface conditions. In the other areas, where the geological studies are inadequate, they must be supplemented with geophysics or direct exploration, such as drilling. Since geophysical work is far less costly than any form of direct explbration, it is used almost exclusively as the means for obtaining the desired subsurface information. The geological and geophysical techniques are credited with locating sites which yielded one producer for three dry holes during the year 1947.' For the wells located without geology or geophysics, there is a ratio of one producing well to sixteen dry holes. From these figures it is seen that the geological and geophysical techniques are more than four times as successful as the nontechnical exploration. It will be in order to consider further this ratio of one producer to three dry holes. The geophysical methods in use today† do not pretend to locate oil directly; their function is to locate anomalies or structures favorable for the accumulation of oil. For a producing oil well we must have not only structure, but also other favorable conditions, namely: petroliferous source beds, the required porosity and permeability in the reservoir rocks, an impermeable cap rock over the reser- voir, and the necessary water or gravity drive to force the oil into the bore hole. Since the geophysical work can only detect and sometimes delimit the anomaly, these other necessary conditions can be determined only by direct exploration. The success of modern geophysical work in locating and limiting the structure itself is remarkably high, probably over 95 pct accurate. Geophysical work renders an important service in the delineation of the structurally unfavorable areas and their elimination from the drilling phase of the exploration program. When attempting to locate any material of scarce occurrence in the earth, it is of paramount importance to know where not to dig. This elimination of barren areas is the least appreciated but is of great economic importance. For illustration, the difference between one producer to three dry holes, and one producer to sixteen dry holes, represents a saving of thirteen drilled wells, which would require an expenditure many times the cost of the geophysical work that might have revealed the nonfavorable structural conditions.
