G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals 0.)-The author's paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. This plot is reproduced by alor in X-ray Metallography. Because of this nonlinearity, preparation cf suitable standards and/or correction for absorption and enhancement are essential in microanalysis. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author's recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann's method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. He has chosen one for the formation of Fez03 from FeO and oxygen which gives Fea3 activities 50 pct higher

Properly constructed stopes are necessary underground for proper ventilation and safe, healthful working conditions. Mining companies are concerned with providing the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. It is important to consider 1) proper materials, 2) construction that ensures maximum performance from the material used, and 3) keeping costs within reasonable limits for the unit operation—stopping—involved. The authors investigated all aspects of the problem and have attempted to layout a study program to provide information on all phases. Mining companies every year purchase huge amounts of material for the construction of ventilation stoppings. This material by the time it is in place in the stoppings will cost the company many thousands of dollars. In addition and more importantly these stoppings are supposed to confine air travel along certain well defined paths into areas where it is needed to provide safe and healthful atmospheres for workmen. The cost of forcing this air through the mine is large and in general increases as the total quantity increases. Consequently, if the stoppings leak, increased cost results and in addition unsatisfactory ventilation may prevail in the mine. Therefore, it is essentia1 to provide the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. When attempting to provide the best stoppings possible at an economic cost, three aspects of the problem must be considered. These are 1) getting the most suitable material for stopping constructions, 2) constructing the stopping so as to get the best performance from the material used, and 3) keeping the cost of stopping construction to a minimum for a suitable stopping. This investigation is concerned with all phases of the problem and has attempted to lay out a study to provide information on all of them. In order to develop information on the best stopping material available it seemed wise, after con- sidering the job a stopping must do, to investigate the following aspects of material used for stoppings: 1) strength in compression, 2) compressibility or yield under load, 3) porosity, and 4) permeability. To provide information on the best manner of construction the following aspects of air leakage through the stopping were investigated: 1) when the stopping is built of dry stacked materials—i.e., the joints are not mortar-laid (See Fig. 1); 2) when the stopping is built of dry stacked material and then plastered on one side (see Fig. 2); 3) when the

The following investigation constitutes a brief réumé of the more important binary magnesium alloys from the standpoint of metallo-graphic technique, and the effect of heat treatment on structure and properties. The comparative newness of the subject justifies this procedure as a preface to a more detailed study of each individual series of alloys. The work was started with the idea of practical application in the industry rather than as a theoretical investigation. The alloy compositions studied were selected as those most likely to show whether heat treatment would produce beneficial results. Furthermore, it was considered satisfactory to use commercial 99.9 per cent. magnesium, the best commercial grade of alloying ingredients, and to limit the time of heat treatment at the expense of incomplete equilibrium. These facts must be kept in mind when examining the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn. Preparation of Alloys All melts were made in an oil-fired cast-steel pot, approximately 12 in. dia, by 12 in. deep. Approximately 15 lb. of flux and 50 lb. of magnesium were melted and the calculated amount of alloying metal was added. After thorough alloying and puddling, the metal was chill cast in a graphite mold with four 1/2 by 1/2 by 4 in. bars fed from a common sprue and runner. The next higher composition alloy in a given series was made by adding the calculated amount of metal to the heel from the preceding cast. The pot was thoroughly cleaned after each series and new flux then introduced, thus avoiding possible contamination from earlier melts. The percentage compositions given in Table 1 are the calculated values. While not all alloys were analyzed, enough were checked to indicate that the reported compositions are correct to a few tenths of one per cent. A more detailed description of the foundry methods employed has been given in a previous paper. 1

This paper presents correlations for predicting the solu-lility, swelling and viscosity behavior of CO2-crude oil sys8i.m~. The correlations were developed from experimental data obtained by the authors. These data are also presented. The data were determined by measuring the properties of mixtures of CO, and nine different oils. Experiinental conditions covered a range of 100 to 250°F and pressures up to 2,300 psia. Properties predicted by the correlations have average deviations, expressed as per cent of experimental value, of 2 per cent for solubility, 0.5 per cent for swelling and 12 per cent for viscosity. INTRODUCTION Interest in CO2 injection as an oil recovery process has led to the development of performance prediction methods which can be applied to specific reservoirs.1 iS To use these performance prediction methods, it is necessary to know the solubility, swelling and viscosity properties of CO2-crude oil mixtures at reservoir conditions. Some information on these properties has appeared in the literature; however, this information did not cover the range of different oils and conditions needed to prepare generalized correlations for reservoir engineering purposes. Consequently, an experimental program was undertaken to collect the data needed. The data obtained and the correlations developed from the data are described in the following sections of this paper. SOLUBILITY OF CO2 IN CRUDE OILS CO2 solubility data in the literature come from six principal sources. The solubility prediction method of Welker and Dunlop3 is limited to 80F. The information in Ref. 4 is of two types: the first includes binary and ternary mixtures of CO, and light hydrocarbons (C1 to C6), and the second gives data for CO1 and heavy hydrocarbons for a temperature range of 40 to 90F. Ref. 5 contains a KCO2 chart for systems whose convergence pressure is 4,000 psia. The KCO2's are based mainly on CO2-natural gas mixtures. Poettmann's work covered CO2 solubility in one condensate and one crude oil6,7 Ja-coby and Rzasa measured CO? solubilities as a function of pressure and temperature for two natural gas-absorber oil mixtures and two natural gas-crude oil mixtures.'8 CO, concentration in these four systems was fixed at 5 mol per cent. The work reported in this paper extends CO, solubility data to a variety of different crude oil types in a temperature range from 110 to 250F and pressures up to 2,300 psia. The experimental procedure used by the authors to obtain the solubility data consisted of combining known amounts of pure CO, and crude oil in a visual cell at a fixed temperature and measuring the bubble point of the mixture. Measurements were made for a total of 40 different CO2-oil mixtures and the results are shown in Table 2. The mixtures included nine different oils (seven crude oils and two refined oils) whose properties are listed in Table 1. All nine oils had vapor pressures less than 1 atm at the experimental temperatures. Consequently, analysis of the bubble-point vapor showed a CO, concentration over 99 mol per cent. At no time during these experiments was a second, more dense, liquid phase observed. The solubility correlation which was developed from the data in Table 2 is presented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. In these figures, solubility is expressed as xco2 the mol fraction of CO, in the CO2-oil mixture. Fig. 1 shows solubility as a function of CO2 fugacity6 and temperature. Fig. 2 shows the same solubility data expressed as a function of saturation pressure and temperature. The solubility shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is for an oil whose UOP characterization factor is 11.7. UOP characterization factors of crude oils can be determined from Ref. 10 if the viscosity and APT gravity of the oil are known. This paper's aim is to demonstrate, by reviewing findings and conclusions of earlier authors and through recording and interpreting the outcome of recent laboratory study of the ores, that the ores around the Gem stocks are metamorphosed equivalents of common siderite-sulfide ores far from the stocks, as was first proposed by Hershey (1912, 1913). That is, all the ores probably have the Precambrian age of 1250 million years reported by Long et al. (1960). Those near the Gem stocks, however, were extensively metamorphosed in Cretaceous time during the emplacement of stocks so their resemblance and relation to other veins in the district are camouflaged.

SINGLE slip and a single parallel array of edge dislocations have been obtained in silicon single crystals by homogeneously bending them in a four-point dead-loading device at 1000°C around the [211] axis with [253.] as the tensile axis which encloses an angle of 40° with the glide plane. Other orientations or lower temperatures proved unsuitable. The homogeneity of the bending was checked by the method shown in Fig. 1. The chemically polished specimen was exposed to parallel light from a microscope-stage lamp. The sharpness of the focus of the reflected light is an approximate measure of the circularity of the sample. This method permitted the determination of the actual radius of bent specimens within 10 pct accuracy. The etching solution developed to show up dislocations consisted of the following volume parts: 2 HF, 1 HNO,, 2 CH,COOH, 1 a solution of 5 wt pct of CuNO, in water (Rosi'). The acetic-acid content was adjusted to produce fine well-defined etch-pits in about 2 min at room temperature. The effectiveness of the etch did not depend on the crystal-lographic orientation of the face etched. The number of etch pits produced after a given deformation was checked in the usual way against the Cahn formula' and showed good agreement. As it is to be expected from the orientation of the primary system there are slip steps on the top and bottom faces but not on the side faces (perpendicular to the bending axis), whereas etch pits appear on the side faces but not on the top and bottom faces. This is different only for occasional dislocations of a secondary glide system. All the micrographs included have been taken in places where the most of secondary glide could be seen. From this it is evident that in the homegeneously deformed region the number of secondary dislocations was less than 1 in 1000 of the primary type. Dislocation Distribution—A series of tests with varying amounts of deformation is shown in Figs. 2(a-c). An observation that can readily be made from these pictures is that the linear density of dislocations within slip lines is relatively constant and independent of the amount of deformation. "Slip line" in this context is understood to mean a line that is a straight connection of individual etch pits. The heavily pitted bands which can be seen in each of these three pictures may be resolved fairly definitely, at higher magnifications, into many "slip lines" the distance between them being of the order of 0.5p The distance between dislocations in slip lines is of the order of 2p and it is also fairly constant in going from the neutral zone outward. The higher over-all dislocation density in the outer regions of any sample and the higher total number in a more heavily deformed sample, are effected by a larger number of "slip lines." The relative constancy of the dislocation distance within an individual slip line is surprising. The absence of pile-ups" may imply, if there is no rear- rangement on unloading," that there are no substantial obstacles to slip in this case. The work of The Bahrein Petroleum Company, Ltd., on Bahrein Island consisted mainly in continuing development work and prospecting previously reported. The exploratory work, however, has been greatly minimized and new wells are being drilled, chiefly for the development of larger production; 20 wells had been completed by the end of 1935 and 8 were being drilled. In addition to what has been referred to as the ''main pay," two deeper productive horizons have been discovered, which apparently will greatly increase the potential of the field although the areal extent of this lower production has not yet been determined. The proven acreage of the "main pay" is more than 12,500 acres. Current production (principally from the upper horizons) is about 13,400 bbl. a day. The construction of a 10,000-bb1.-a-day refinery has begun and is to be in operation by July, 1936. It is expected that the capacity will be considerably increased at a later date. The construction of office buildings and a permanent camp has been almost completed. In Saudi Arabia the California Arabian Standard Oil Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company of California, spudded in a well in April, 1935, near the village of Dammam, on the Persian Gulf coast of A1 Hasa. Although several important showings of high-gravity oil and considerable gas have been found, the well is not yet considcred a commercial producer. Dammam well No. 2 has been started farther south on the same structure. A great deal of reconnaissance and some detailed geological work has been completed during the last three field seasons. In order to overcome difficulties of transportation over the desert sand, unusual methods have been used. The parlies penctrating the interior by the use of automobiles and trucks have been supplied with gasoline and provisions by caravans of camels. Mail and supp1ies of lighter weight urgently needed have been carried to the field men by an airplane operated by the geological division of the company. Each party has been supplied with a radio receiving and transmitting set to keep in contact with the airplane as well as with geological headquarters at Jubail on the coast of A1 Hasa.

The arrangement of the reverberatory furnace and the two waste-heat boilers at the Magma Copper Company's smelter at Superior, Ariz., is shown in Fig. 1. The inside dimensions of the furnace at the slag line are: length, 96 ft.; width, 22 ft. The boilers are Erie City vertical type with a rated capacity of 700 hp. The 3-in. boiler tubes are arranged in two banks with a vertical baffle between. The banks are 30 tubes wide by 9 tubes deep—a total of 540 tubes.

PRECEDING chapters on thermochemistry, and the reactions in and between metal and slag phases in the bath of the furnace tend to emphasize the equilibrium or "static" conditions in the furnace and process, such as the total amounts of heat from fuel combustion or from certain bath reactions, the concentration relationships between slag and metal at the steady state for certain reactions, and the like. Such data are obtained essentially by means of the logic of thermo- dynamics, which helps to determine the energy change between initial and final states in a process as well as to define its equilibrium or steady-state condition, but which is not concerned with the rate of change in the process or with the mechanisms or path followed between initial and final states. These questions of just "how it works" and "how fast" belong to the kinetic aspect of any process; their answers are helpful in speeding up or slowing down and thus controlling intelligently its operation, and also to understand certain natural limitations which are especially important in many high-temperature processes. The kinetic aspects of interest here comprise mainly (1) the flow of gases through the furnace system, (2) the flow of heat in the system, and (3) the mechanisms and rate factors in the various chemical reactions. A really adequate discussion of the first two subjects would require at least three or four times the space available here; it has been tried, therefore, in this and the next chapter to outline but a few fundamentals necessary to an intelligent approach and to indicate some of the conditions of heat and gas flow more or less peculiar to the open hearth, since several good general discussions on these subjects may be found in the literature.(1) For the designer of open-hearth furnaces, the principles of gas flow are of paramount importance.(2,3,4,5) They are also important to the operation of the process, however, at least to the extent of a general qualitative picture of the movement of gases in the system, which is all that is attempted here.

DURING 1932 the amount of geophysical surveying carried out as a part of oil-field development in¬creased, particularly in the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. Here the most intensive geophysical activity was displayed in the discovery of domes and prospects several years ago, after which there was a period of relative inactivity. This year many of the leases required development and geophysical methods were used to obtain pictures of the detailed structures. These were almost exclusively gravity and reflection-seismograph surveys and for the first time this latter method was generally used by oil operators to construct subsurface contours. The total number of geophysical troops in this territory increased from 16 to 40 during the year.

Dust or fume control systems are devices for capturing contaminants at their source and preventing their discharge to atmosphere. The Primary Components Of Any Dust Control System Include: An enclosure around any potential dust source such as conveyor belt transfer, crusher, screening machine, bin loading and loadout. Ductwork including hood takeoffs (transitions) to convey the collected dust laden air away from the source of dust generation to a convenient location. A dust collector for separation of particulate matter from the air stream prior to its discharge to the atmosphere. A prime mover generally a fan, to draw air into an enclosure and to overcome resistance to flow in the ductwork, dust collector and stack.

Curlisle: We're sitting in Don McLaughlin's office overlooking Sun Francisco Bay, and he's going to be good enough to talk about early days in California, maybe about his college years in Berkeley, maybe about his first jobs in mining. Now, Don, would you be good enough to start it off by saying something about George Hearst. I know he died before you were born, but you know a lot about the family, and you no doubt know a lot about him. Certainly, nobody in those days matched his record in getting hold of good mines. McLaughlin: George Hearst died, actually, in the very year that I was born, but as I more or less grew up in the home of Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, who was his widow, I heard a great deal about the mines and the people that made the great fortune she inherited and used so wisely. But I don't think I really had an appreciation of George Hearst until 1 became active in the mining world and realized how many major mines he had picked in the early days and how much he had to do with their development into successful properties. He started in the California gold fields, but it was on the Comstock that he made his first big stake out of his substantial share in the Ophir mine. I believe at that time he was on his own. Then, later, he became associated with Ben Ali Haggin and Lloyd Tevis in San Francisco, and scoured the West for them. They made a little money in Eureka, Nevada, and other places, but the first important property that he obtained for them was the famous Ontario Mine in Park City, which became one of the great silver lead producers of the Continent. Then later he acquired the Homestake.

The problem of applying instrument control of variables associated with lead-zinc ore treatment has been under investigation for several years at The Zinc Corp. facilities in Broken Hill, Australia. In 1959 it was decided that there was sufficient knowledge of the problem to enable specifications to be drawn up for a system to automatically control at set conditions the roll crushing, ball milling, lead flotation and zinc flotation sections. In choosing between electrical and pneumatic control systems the broad principle was adopted that if the sensing system was pneumatic the transmission and control would also be pneumatic, whereas if electrical sensing was employed, electrical transmission and control would apply. In general. pneumatic systems were preferred owing to lack of experience with, and standardization of, the electrical systems offered at the time the specification was prepared.

Almost every oil well drilled into limestone formations in Kansas is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion: to increase potential capacity of well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production; to shorten time required to produce recoverable oil; and to increase quantity of oil recovered ultimately from reservoir. Acid treating marked a forward step in the producing fields of Kansas; in fact, many old limestone fields that almost had reached their economic producing limit were "rejuvenated" with acid and their capacities to produce increased several times. It also caused a marked increase in the ultimate oil recovery of some old and nearly depleted fields of Kansas. The effect of the acid was due to the cleaning-out action by the acid at the face of the limestone, the enlargement of the small drainage channels, and the apparent penetration of the acid to previously undrained porous and saturated strata. Studies of the effects of acid were made in the Fairport field, three groups of wells in the El Dorado field and the Shutts field. Estimation of increased recoveries resulting from acid in these fields and groups of wells ranged from 1000 to 2400 bbI. per acre. Limestone structures that had been tested by drilling and found noncommercial were later completed as commerical oil-producing formations through the use of acid. The Kansas City formation, Valley Center field of Kansas, is an example. Increased oil production and revenue from the old fields justified the reconditioning of equipment, which in most cases had become in poor mechanical condition. The first treatment with hydrochloric acid of an oil well in Kansas was in October 1932, and by the end of 1937 almost 6000 wells had been treated. Many wells were treated more than once and the total number of treatments exceeded 8000 by the end of 1937. Approximately 12 3/4 million gallons of acid was required for these treatments. The report includes 15 illustrations and 16 tables.

THE internal friction of nonferrous metals vibrating at low stress amplitudes has so far always been successfully interpreted in terms of inhomogeneities of one sort or another. Examples are the fluctuation of stress across a specimen vibrating transversely,1,2,3 the stress inhomogeneities due to the elastic anisotropy and partial random orientation of the individual crystallites,4,5 localized weak regions introduced by cold-working,6,7 grain boundaries and possibly twinning planes.8.9 Perfect single crystals are, by definition, homogeneous. Actual single crystals usually, perhaps always, contains some imperfections. The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether the internal friction of single crystals may likewise be attributed to inhomogeneities. This study was made possible through the gift of a large single crystal of 70-30 alpha brass by H. L. Burghoff, of the Chase Brass and Copper Co. The specimen, 3-s in. in diameter and 10 in. long, was similar to samples previously described by Mr. Burghoff.10 EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method used has previously been described in Institute papers.5,6.9 The measure of internal friction adopted here, I/Q, is (p) X the logarithmic decrement, a measure used by some writers, and is also (I/2p) X the specific damping capacity, a measure used by other writers. In all measurements the stress level was kept so low that the measurements were independent of stress level. In all measurements in which the temperature was varied, observations were made as the specimen slowly cooled from its highest temperature. The specimen was vibrated transversely. Observations were made at the fundamental frequency and at the first overtone, of about 620 and 1710 cycles per second, respectively. No attempt was made to avoid acoustical losses. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The specimen was annealed for several hours at 450°C. The temperature dependence of the internal friction was then determined from room temperature to 400°°C. As shown in Fig. i, the internal friction increased by only a factor of 2 from room temperature to 300°°C., then by a factor of 100 during the next :too' interval. These measurements are consistent with the view that the observed internal friction is the superposition of two distinct parts. One, dominant at room temperature, is nearly independent of temperature. This part may be accounted for by acoustical losses and by transverse thermal currents. It was not further investigated. The second part, when plotted in the manner of Fig. I, lies upon a straight line. Therefore it has a heat of activation H; i.e., it varies with temperature as Internal friction ~ e-HI/RT [I]

The electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. is in Government Gulch, at Silver King, Shoshone County, Idaho, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, about one mile from the Bunker Hill smelter and about three miles from Kellogg. The Sullivan Mining Co., which owns both the zinc plant and the Star mine, is itself owned jointly by the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co, and the Hecla Mining Company. The Tainton high-density, high-acid process is used at this plant, therefore some parts of its flowsheet differ markedly from those of electrolytic plants using the low-density process. While it is a custom plant and has treated a variety of zinc concentrates originating from various sources in a number of states, it has obtained its main supply of zinc concentrates chiefly from the zinc-bearing ores of the Coeur d'A1ene mining district, of which the principal important sources have been the Bunker Hill and Star mines. Thus the main feed has been zinc concentrates obtained from complex lead-zinc-silver ores. For the year of 1935 the concentrates had the following composition: water, 9.5 per cent; Zn, 50.6; Pb, 3.3; Fe, 9.4; S, 31.0; Cu, 0.2; insoluble, 2.9. Flowsheet The concentrates are delivered to the plant in railroad cars, which discharge into storage bins directly under the track. Bottom-dump cars are dropped directly into the bins while a slip scraper, pulled by an air tugger hoist, is used to empty box cars. There are five storage bins for concentrates, each of approximately 300 tons capacity. At the bottom of each bin there are individual belt feeders that discharge onto a common conveyor belt, which in turn discharges to another belt that carries the concentrate onto a weightometer belt for weighing. Immediately after the weighing, the crushed oversize return from the roasters is added to the load on the belt and then the ground-up sweepings, lumps and roaster cleanings. An electromagnet at the end of this conveyor removes tramp iron from the feed. The belt discharges to a set of 30 by 12-in. rolls, which break up lumps or frozen chunks of concentrate, etc. Beneath the rolls there is a screw conveyor, which conveys the roll discharge to a

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) DURING the year 1878-79, Anton Eilers, who was then interested in the lead smelting and refining business near Salt Lake City, Utah, made a somewhat radical departure from the regular practice at that time, which was to use but little lime in the slag, with a high percentage of iron. Lime was not only a cheaper flux than iron, but it enabled the metallurgist to make a more siliceous slag, an economical advantage in smelting where the smelting companies had to purchase either iron or lime to neutralize the excess silica, and penalize the ore shippers accordingly. The larger amount of both lime and silica in the slag also made it of lighter specific gravity, and a better separation of the metals and mattes was secured. This change in the formation of slags for lead smelting was brought about by Anton Eilers, prior to the Leadville mining excitement of 1879. We must also give Mr. Eilers credit for the general introduction of the hollow water-cooled cast-iron jacket for the blast furnace. Again referring to the use of more lime and less iron in the formation of slags,. there is no doubt but that it prevents the formation of a great many so-called "sows" in the lead crucible, such as were made in the early history of lead smelting in the Rocky Mountains; these sows consisted of lead, iron, arsenic, sulphur, copper, and other metals, including gold and silver, mixed with unconsumed fuel, and often, after vain attempts to cut them up or melt them to a suitable size for handling, were buried in the slag clumps to get them out of-sight. Another advantage derived from the adoption of high-lime slags. when smelting ore containing arsenic is the production of less speiss (a by-product heavier than matte, resulting from careless operation of the furnace, the lead being driven out of the crucible and sows built up). This speiss, while usually not as rich in precious metals as matte made at the same time, is too valuable to be thrown away; but it is difficult to treat, and it was thrown away or piled on the slag clumps in the pioneer clays of lead smelting in this country.
