In presenting this paper to the Institute I beg to mention, first, the results which I have obtained and the apparatus which I have employed, and to follow this with a brief description of the steps by which I hare perfected this process. My present mode of testing is as follows: I obtain, either from the furnace or from the finished product in any stage in which it may chance to be, a small test-piece, usually about 3/4 of an inch square by 3 1/2 inches in length. I place this test-piece upon the poles of an ordinary electro-magnet, for about one minute, and thus magnetize it to its extreme limit. I then place it upon an indicator (which I will shortly describe), on which indicator there is already placed a piece of steel of similar form which has been magnetized in the same manner, the percentage of carbon of this second piece being definitely known. I then, by means of a scale, which forms part of the indicator, marked in degrees of carbonization, read the exact percentage of carbon contained in the piece under examination. My apparatus consists of an ordinary electro-magnet, connected with a suitable battery of moderate power, by which I magnetize the pieces as before described, and of an indicator which consists of a magnetic needle suitably mounted or suspended, so that it is free to deviate a few degrees only from the zero point, and having a rest, which is used to check the vibrations when in use, and to support its weight when not in use. At a right angle to the natural position of the needle I have a scale about 3 feet long, the zero point of which coincides with the natural position of the needle. This scale is marked in each direction from the zero point in degrees of carbonization. The marking of the scale is in accordance with the following rule: Taking the carbonization of the steel as a basis, I maintain the same proportion between the squares of the distances on the scale as exists between the percentages of carbon in the steel, for instance, if .08 of

The critical resolved shear stress and the strain rate dependence of the .flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals up to 6 at. pct A1 over a temperature ralzge of 4.1° to 470°K. At room temperature the solid solution strengthening is attributed brinciballv to an increase in the dislocation density on alloying. At 42°K the alloys are relatively stronger because the dislocations widen on alloying and are more difficult to cut. In a previous paper, the authors reported the characteristics of strain aging in Ag base A1 alloys.' The variation of the magnitude of the strain-aging yield drops on aging time, aluminum content, and testing temperature strongly indicated that the phenomenon is due to the Suzuki mechanism. In the present paper, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) and the strain rate dependence of the flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals as functions of testing temperature (4.2" to 470") and A1 content (0 to 6 at. pct). Observations on the substructure and measurements of the effect of crystal growth rate are also given. The experimental re- sults appear explainable considering that aluminum additions increase the dislocation density and dislocation width. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods of specimen preparation and tensile testing were described previously.' Briefly, single crystals were grown from the melt in a vacuum (1 x lom5 mm Hg), shaped into tensile samples by a combination of abrading and acid etching, annealed at 850°C in a vacuum (1 x 10" mm &Z) for several days, and furnace cooled to 200'. The testing was done on a model TM Instron using friction grips and a strain rate of about 5 x 106 per sec unless otherwise noted. The various testing temperatures were obtained by immersing the specimens in the following media: 1) 4.2': liquid helium using the apparatus of G. Byrne;' 2) 77°K: liquid nitrogen; 3) 200"K: dry ice and acetone; 4) 415' K: ethylene glycol; 5) 460' \ to 480' : molten Stanalax. In the determination of the CRSS above 296' K, a ratio method was used; the crystals were strained initially at the higher temperature, 0.1 pct shear strain, and then tested at 296' . The ratio of the flow stress between the two temperatures was then multiplied by the average CRSS at 296' K to obtain the value of the CRSS at the high temperature. (The test at 296' showed a yield point resulting from strain aging; the flow stress at 296' K was taken as the lower yield stress.) An overland belt conveyor system installed at Simco-Peabody's mine near Coshocton, Ohio, is presently carrying coal three miles at an estimated cost of 4.499 per ton-mile. Installed by Link-Belt Co. in late 1961, this system transports coal from open pit and underground mining operations to the Conesville Power Plant. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. In 1960 the power plant completed plans to enlarge by adding a third boiler. As a result, Simco-Peabody was required to provide means to produce and handle more coal. The haulage equipment, which consisted of one 90-ton, five 60-ton and one 50-ton off- highway trucks, was too small to handle the increasing daily coal demands. Annual tonnage was approaching a million tons and in a few years would be well over that figure.

A method has been devloped for chromatographic analysis Of the vapor and liquid phases Of a a system containing methane to components having 20 or more carbon atoms. The method uses a windowed equilibrium cell in which volumetric phase behavior of the system can be observed accurately and from which small samples of gas or liquid can be withdrawn for analysis. Analyses are made using two chromatographs, one for the lighter and one for the heavier components in a sample. Combination of the two analyses yields a detailed analysis of the gas or liquid sample. The complexity of the condensate heavy ends is evident from the chromatograms of these fractions, and the predominance of the paraffin hydrocarborn serves as a useful marker in interpreting the chromatograms. The K-values obtained in this analytical method are presented for a high-pressure condensate system and predict closely the observed volumetric behavior of the system. INTRODUCTION Quantitative analysis of hydrocarbons from natural gas reservoirs is necessary for several reasons—to calculate the amount of sales gas produced, to calculate the amount of natural gasoline produced, to plan a liquid recovery system, or to calculate the potential economic value of a reservoir produced under one or more of several different conditions. Analysis of natural gas fluids produced to the surface consists of identifying and computing the mol fraction of each component of the mixture. Although methane is the predominant component, varying amounts of ethane, propane, butane, pentanes and heavier components are also present. Materials containing up to 30 carbon atoms occur in amounts which decrease with increasing molecular weight. However, the quantities of components in the 20 to 30 carbon atom range are usually so small that their importance is negligible, and they are undetect-able in natural gas by ordinary analytical methods. All the components up to those having 20 carbon atoms may sigsficantly affect phase behavior, however. Commonly, only the methane-through-pentane fraction is analyzed quantitatively for each component, while components heavier than Pentane are lumped and repored as "hexane- plus". Expensive, tedious techniques are required for analysis of this fraction. Consequently the detailed analyses needed for prediction of reservoir behavior are usually undertaken only when major gas fields are being developed. The need for complete analyses of condensate systems is apparent when it is recalled that most gas fields are produced by pressure depletion. As the pressure declines, some of the heavier hydrocarbons are lost as liquids which are in the reservoir. In many instances the amount of liquid in equilibrium with the gas phase at high pressure constitutes only 1 or 2 mol per cent of the total system. Flash calculations generally must predict the actual amount of liquid with an accuracy of a few per cent in order to be useful. This retrograde condensation has been understood for years, but accurate correlation methods to permit quantitative prediction of phase behavior in the retrograde region are not presently available. The increasing importance of natural gas has made accurate prediction of phase behavior and composition of produced natural gas streams an economic necessity. The work reported here was undertaken to provide a rapid, economical method for obtaining the vapor-liquid equilibrium information needed to predict accurately the composition of the fluids produced from a gas reservoir throughout its life. TO develop this method, a pressure cell equipped with windows was designed and built for observing the volumes of liquid and gas present at reservoir pressures and temperatures. Use was made of established chromatographic methods for rapid and detailed analysis of both phases. This paper describes the equipment and techniques developed for obtaining vapor-liquid equilibrium data, presents the results of analyses of a condensate system, and indicates the usefulness of these data in predicting hydrocarbon phase behavior. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT USED The equipment used in obtaining the required information on phase behavior and the complete analysis of hydrocarbon mixtures through C, will be described first, followed by a discussion of the operation of the equipment. It will be helpful, however, to consider first a brief outline of the technique used. A sample of separator gas and liquid is charged to the windowed cell (see Figs. 1 and 2) where volumetric equilibrium phase behavior at reservoir pressures and temperatures can be determined. Then samples of the coexisting phases are withdrawn. Pure chrysocolla is floated with chelating agents that form insoluble complexes with copper at ambient temperature. Complete flotation is obtained with potassium octyl hydroxamate as collector at pH 6. Flotation response is enhanced with increased temperature when low additions of hydroxamate are involved. A natural ore was floated with 0.4 1b per ton octyl hydroxamate at pH 6.5 and 58°C, and a flotation recovery of 76% was obtained with a concentrate grade of 31.6% copper. The flotation characteristics of the oxide copper minerals, malachite, azurite, and cuprite, have not presented the difficulty for concentration as have those of the copper silicate, chrysocolla. The copper carbonates and oxides respond reasonably well to flotation with conventional collectors, whereas chrysocolla will not respond to flotation with fatty acids or xanthates under normal flotation conditions. In this view then, other reagents will have to be devised to function as collectors for chrysocolla. The most obvious general class of reagents for this purpose would seem to be the organic copper chelating compounds. The utility of chelating agents as collectors in flotation systems has already been demonstrated. For example Vivian1 has floated cassiterite using ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine. Holman2 studied the flotation of nickel oxide ores with dimethylglyoxime and also suggested the use of taurine on oxidized lead ores. A rather detailed study on the application of certain chelating agents to some flotation systems was presented by Gutzeit.3 This work indicated that the formation of surface insoluble chelates is probably responsible for flotation in many cases. The role that soluble chelating agents assume was also presented, that is with effective removal of polyvalent cations by complex formation, effective depression of quartz can be obtained. DeWitt and Batchelder4,5 have shown that oximes function well as collectors for chalcocite, malachite, azurite, and cuprite. Ludt and DeWitt6 have presented the possibility of using dyes, such as octyl malachite green, as a collector for chrysocolla. These works presented by DeWitt et al suggest that organic copper chelating compounds offer considerable promise for concentrating chrysocolla, but that the most suitable chelating reagent from the standpoint of cost and flotation response has yet to be determined. The present investigation was undertaken to study the flotation response of chrysocolla to selected copper chelating compounds, that is ethylenediamine, hexamethylenetetramine, potassium octyl hydroxamate, dimethylglyoxime, and benzoin a-oxime. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Chrysocolla: The chrysocolla used in the microflo-tation studies was from New Mexico and analyzed 20.8% copper. X-ray diffraction showed this material to be amorphous in character, but some faint lines of quartz were noted. A natural oxide copper ore from Utah was also used in the investigation. This ore contains malachite principally but also contains chrysocolla and tenorite together with some sulfide copper. The sulfide copper comprises from 15 to 20% of the total copper content of the ore. Water: Conductivity water was used in the microflo-tation experiments, while Golden tap water was used in the experiments with the natural ore. Reagents: Reagent grade n-amyl alcohol was used as frother in the experiments with pure mineral, while MIBC was used in the work with the ore. Ethylenediamine, hexamethylenetetramine, dimethylglyoxime and benzoin a-oxime were reagent grade in quality. Pure potassium octyl hydroxamate was prepared as follows: 1) 1.0 mole of KOH in 140 cc of methanol was combined with 0.6 mole of hydroxyl-amine hydrochloride in 240 cc of methanol at 40°C (KC1 precipitates under these conditions and to effect complete removal of KCl, the system was cooled to 10°C and filtered), 2) a light methanol wash was then given the KC1 cake, 3) the filtrate was agitated at room temperature and 0.33 mole of the methyl ester of the organic acid (i.e. methyl octanoate) was

The advance made in recent times in this branch of metallurgy is indicated by the attention the subject is receiving from important American copper-producing companies. Reference to the files of publications devoted to the mining industry discloses that some 20 American companies are actively investigating the amenability of their ore, or other material, to leaching methods, and that plants of varying capacities up to 10,000 tons per day arc under construction or are projected. Several leaching works are in commercial operation. It has been frequently pointed out that no method of leaching is universally applicable, for the reason that each ore differs in some particular from apparently similar ore found elsewhere, and also because local conditions are rarely the same even where the ore closely approximates in character that being worked at some other point. For this reason the older companies are approaching the matter in a conservative manner, experimentally determining for themselves the salient features in each instance. In considering a leaching proposition three factors at once fix the attention: (1) disengaging the metal from mineralized forms in which it is found in nature; (2) recovering the metal in a commercial state after it has been dissolved; (3) the apparatus best adapted to carrying out the several operations. Bringing the Metal into Solution This feature.has been found to present no serious difficulties. Numerous solvents for copper are known, and it has been repeatedly demonstrated on a commercial scale that from 80 to 90 per cent. of the metal contained in an ore can be rapidly brought into solution. It is interesting to note, however, that all of the companies above referred to have selected sulphuric acid as the basis for a lixiviant. A medium is anisotropic if its properties vary with direction. This is the general characteristic of many rocks, for example, schists, slates, gneisses, phyllites and other metamorphic rocks. Bedded and regularly jointed rocks also display anisotropic behavior. This paper is concerned with the influence of rock anisotropy on in-situ stress measurements. It is limited to stress measurements by overcoring techniques for which strains and displacements are recorded either on the walls of a pilot hole at the end of one or several boreholes or within instrumented solid or hollow inclusions perfectly bonded to the surface of the pilot hole. The rock is described as homogeneous, continuous, anisotropic and linearly elastic. The following questions are answered with special emphasis on rocks that can be classed as transversely isotropic or orthotropic: the number of independent measurements obtainable in a single borehole; the number of boreholes required to determine the in-situ stress field; the influence of rock anisotropy on these numbers; the influence of the anisotropy type and the error involved by neglecting rock anisotropy.

THE Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. began to produce bismuth at the Oroya smelter in 1929, at which time the only important consumption of that metal was in the manufacture, of pharmaceutical compounds, and the normal supply of metal exceeded the demand. With a new and major producer entering the field, additional uses for bismuth had to be developed. A survey indicated that the most promising opportunity lay in fusible alloys containing bismuth. A large number of bismuth alloys were known and a few of them were being used in the manufacture of automatic sprinkler heads and safety plugs. The literature cover in,- the- alloys was found to be sketchy and contradictory. Research, development, and educational work carrried on by the Corporation during the past fifteen years has resulted in greatly enlarged uses for the metal. THE fundamental mechanism of the deformation of zinc has been thoroughly described by several prominent investigators, particularly Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid,1 Mathewson and Phillips,2 and Schmid and Wasserman.3 The deformation of zinc occurs primarily through slip along basal planes {00. 1 }, and secondarily through twinning on pyramidal planes of the form { 10.2). In addition to these basic studies on single crystals, there have been a number of determinations4,5 of preferred orientations developed in rolled, polycrystalline zinc. In no case, to our knowledge, has there been described the development of oriented struc-tures in zinc as a result of a, systematic series of rolling treatments. The work included in the present paper shows the changes in orientation produced in a zinc alloy by successively increasing degrees of cold-rolling reduction. This alloy has the same crystal form, hexagonal close-packed, as zinc, but its susceptibility to hardening for a given degree of working is much greater because of its higher recrystal-lization temperature.

Much has been said and written about the various uses of die castings, their applications in the various industries and their advantages and disadvantages. Examination of this literature, however, fails to disclose any data concerning the effect of temperature upon any of the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The uses and applications of die castings are so numerous, and of such a varied nature, that far too lengthy a manuscript would be required to list all of them. Brief mention of some specific cases will suffice to illustrate the temperature ranges in which certain die castings function. Automobile hardware, such as hub caps, door handles, radiator caps, etc., can be used as one example. Castings of this type are constantly exposed to varying climatic conditions, temperatures ranging from below zero to upwards of 100" F. Refrigerator parts, such as ice-cube trays, etc., form another example. Approaching the other temperature extreme, we encounter conditions such as are found in kitchens in which oven-heat indicator parts, cooking utensils, waffle grids, etc., embody use of die castings, where temperatures as high as 500" F. are often met with. Because of this variation in service temperatures, it was felt necessary to ascertain the effect of these temperatures upon the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The Charpy impact test was chosen first because of its simplicity, and because of the fact that brittleness is more likely to be objectionable in die castings than hardness or other physical properties. Alloys Investigated Two types of alloys were used in this investigation—zinc-base and aluminum-base alloys. Two alloys of each group were included. Those most generally employed in the industry at present were selected. Alloys A and B are of the same nominal composition, and correspond to A. S. T. M. alloy XXI, containing 4 per cent aluminum, 3 per cent copper, 0.1 per cent magnesium, and the balance zinc of 99.99 per cent

IN the calculation of oil and gas reserves by volumetric methods, it is necessary to know the volume of the reservoir available for the storage of the oil or gas. To obtain this information, a number of methods for determining both total and effective porosity of reservoir rocks are used. For the determination of the total porosity, or the porosity that considers all of the pore spaces, connected and isolated, the Russell7,8,9 and the Melcher-Nutting1-6 methods are the best known and most- widely used in the petroleum industry. These methods have disadvantages in that they give the total porosity of the samples and in that the samples are reduced to grain size in the determination. In many sands there may be little or no difference between total and effective porosity but in other sands there may be considerable difference between the two. For the estimation of oil-and gas reserves the effective porosity of the reservoir rock always should be used. Of the methods that have been developed for the determination of the effective porosity of reservoir rocks, or the porosity that considers only those pore spaces that are connected, the best known are the so-called Boyle's law6,10-13, and the Washburn-Buntings.5,6,11 methods. The Wash-burn-Bunting method is probably the most widely used because it gives effective porosity, it is rapid, and the apparatus is inexpensive. This method employs a special porosimeter in which the core sample is placed in direct contact with mercury. This method has disadvantages in that, as a result of the high vacuum created in the pore spaces, mercury is drawn into the openings, making it impossible to use the sample for a check determination and also ruining the sample for any further test, such as permeability. The purpose of this paper is to describe an appa-ratus employing the same principle as the Washburn-Bunting method but so designed that the core sample does not come in contact with the mercury in the porosimeter.

Many chemical methods of upgrading ilmenite to enhance its titanium dioxide content involve reduction of the FeO in this mineral followed by solution of the metallic iron produced. While the use of most mineral acids for this purpose entails acid regeneration or salt disposal problems, these difficulties can be overcome with carbonic acid. Satisfactory rates of iron removal have been achieved at temperatures below 100° C and at CO, pressures up to 600 psi. Lowering of gas pressure over soluble bicarbonate solutions permits recovery of CO. and precipitation of iron oxide. The removal of the manganese, often present in ilmenites, is also feasible with these treatments.

THIS paper describes the method of mining a steeply pitching anthracite seam on a heavy pitch in the Orchard vein in No. 1 Tunnel of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co. The Orchard vein in the Nesquehoning district has a thickness of about 15 ft. on the level of the gangway, which is sufficient thickness for the gangway to be driven full width in coal. Above the gangway, the vein becomes thinner and near the surface is about 8 ft. thick. The coal is of good hard quality and carries a fairly good roof. The pitch of the vein is between 65° and 70°. Usually the breast-and-pillar method has been employed in the mining of the steeply pitching veins in this section. This method produced good results as far as the mining of the breast was concerned but the recovery of the pillar was difficult as to full extraction and expensive as regards costs. To recover these pillars after the breasts were driven, three methods were commonly employed; they were known as the pillar-breast method, pillar-skipping method, and pillar-chute method. The pillar-breast method consisted in putting a battery in one corner of the pillar (Fig. 1), coupling the manways A and B of the two adjacent breasts for two or three lengths ahead of the working face of the pillar being cut, and working the pillar as a breast. This method was used by the more skilled miners of the earlier days but has practically been abandoned. A slight variation of this method is used to some extent. In this case, the pillars are left wider than ordinarily and of sufficient width for the full-width breast to be driven in and a small pillar left on each side of the pillar breast between it and the regular breasts. With the completion of the "pillar breast," the ribs are drilled full of holes, loaded, and fired.

Albert Sauveur, Cambridge, Mass. (written discussion).— In his introductory paragraph, the author states that he has come to bury Beilby, not to praise him. The paper, however, gives the impression that while he may have dug the grave, Beilby is still at large. I am not one of those whom the author calls enthusiastic supporters of Beilby's amorphous theory and in support of this claim quote from a book I am writing: "Attractive as the amorphous theory is, and notwithstanding the ability with which it has been presented and the renown of its sponsors and supporters, it should not be accepted without reservations as a demonstrated fact.... So long as it explains more satisfactorily than other theories a greater number of phenomena in which it may play a part, we should use it in preference to others as the best available. Let us avoid the danger, however, into which too many fall, of accepting as indisputable truths, statements and theories emanating from those whom we hold in great esteem. It is not what those men themselves would wish us to do. I am entitled, I think, to occupy a position in the middle ground. Neither should Howe be classified with the enthusiastic supporters for he has written that the theory should be classed rather among the precious working theories than among those firmly established," a very wise and prudent statement. Jeffries, on the other hand, I would not hesitate to describe as an enthusiastic supporter. The author reproaches the advocates of the amorphous theory with having taken whatever properties they needed and with having assigned them arbitrarily to the hypothetical amorphous phase. He then applics their method to small crystals. If the existence of an amorphous phase is assumed, its greater tenacity and greater hardness is satisfactorily explained in the words of Howc: '(This greater strength is natural, because the amorphous state lacks the cleavages and slip planes which weaken crystalline substances." Can the greater strength and hardness claimed for small crystals be as satisfactorily explained? Nor do I think that the cold deformation of metals through successive slips within the crystalline grains can he accounted for as acceptably by the "small crystals theory."

The question of preserving the forests in this country is an impor tant one, not only to trades using wood but to the whole nation, and though agitated for many years has not received that general consid eration which its broad bearing demands. Those who are interested in and working for reform in the treat ment of American forests are looking to the government for help, suggesting the creation of a commission to study the conditions of forests at home and abroad, and hope that a sound system of manag ing the woodlands will be thereby inaugurated. This reform will cost time and money, all the more because the government can bring to bear upon private owners hardly any power but that of good example and encouragement. There is, however, another aspect of the question to which I wish to draw your attention, namely; the more economical use of the valuable material which our forests offer, a more careful and ex haustive utilization of its constituents in all cases where wood or its products are applied. The wasteful consumption of wood in the United States is in every way so enormous as to justify the statement that by merely adopting an economical husbandry in this particular the destruction of forests might be delayed for many years, while the neglect of this imperatively needed and immediately practicable reform deprives legislative remedies of much of their value. In this regard I wish to draw the attention of metallurgists, especially those who are in terested in the manufacture of charcoal iron, to a more economical and profitable use of wood in iron manufacture. For thousands of years of human history wood was the main, nay, the only material used for fuel. Mineral coal came into use only in the fourteenth century, and it is only recently that it has largely displaced its less carbonaceous predecessor as fuel. The art of concentrating carbon in the form of charcoal for easier transportation and readier use in distant places was, according to Pliny, known to the ancients long before Christ., and was practiced in all countries, especially in connection with the iron-manufacture.

A series of dilute solid solutions of a1uminum and silicon in copper, in powder -form, were internally oxidized, compacted, and extruded, to produce Cu-A12O3 and Cu-SiO2 alloys with 0.1 to 12 vol pct of oxide. Room-temperature tensile tests, creep-rupture tests from 450oto 850°C. conductivity measurements, and recrys-tallzzation studies were made. Oxide particle size and interparticle spacings were determined in an effort to relate the structure to measured strength values by means of known dispersion strengthening theories. THE flow characteristics of drilling muds, as described in this paper, and the method given for solving problems relating to the flow of these muds through pipe and accessory equipment, are based on a conception that drilling muds are plastic solids like paints or greases; not liquids. The data presented in this report have been obtained from studies of California muds, chiefly those used in the Kettleman Hills field, by the Producing Department of the Standard Oil Company of California. Although no claim of scientific exactness is made for the formulas and diagrams, since the data upon which they are based, are not. complete even for California muds, the method has proved to be a convenient means for estimating, closely enough for practical purposes, the pressures required to force muds at various rates through pipe systems in which they are handled. Certain approximations have been made to simplify the procedures so that they can be used easily in the field.

DIATOMACEOUS earth occurs in deposits widely distributed throughout the nation. The chief producing areas are in the Western States, where many high-grade deposits are known. Eastern deposits of diatomite are unsatisfactory for many purposes either because of impurity or because of the extremely fine particle size. Eastern users of diatomite, on the whole, must pay for transportation of the material from the west coast. The freight rate is necessarily high because of the great bulk of the diatomite. A satisfactory process of purifying the diatomaceous earths of Maryland and Virginia, which are unsuited for wide use only because of impurities, should be of value to eastern users. In the past, benefication of diatomite by wet processes has been limited to classification or sedimentation for the removal of sand from diatoms. Calcination with salt is used to produce a white diatomite when iron is present in the impurities, and small amounts of clay are rendered inactive in the process. No treatment has been developed whereby a large proportion of clay can be removed from a low-grade diatomaceous earth to give a diatomite of very high purity. In August 1937 the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Dr. R. C. Williams, of Baltimore, undertook the problem of purifying low-grade Maryland diatomite by froth flotation. Work was done at the Eastern Experiment Station, College Park. Unless otherwise stated, the crude diatomite used was from the Patuxent River deposits near Dunkirk. This material, consisting of roughly one-third each of clay, quartz sand and diatoms, was representative of the usual low-grade marine diatomite found in the Coastal Plain Miocene beds of Maryland and Virginia and sporadically in other Atlantic coast states. As received, it contained 50 to 60 per cent moisture and probably had been wet since its formation.
