In recent years bismuth telluride has received considerable attention, primarily due to its value as a thermoelectric material. Since there seems to be little dependence of thermoelectric effect upon crystal orientation1 many of those who have previously worked with this material have been unconcerned with knowing its crystallographic angles to any degree of accuracy. However, when one studies deformation modes, lattice stresses, or the aniso-tropy of mechanical properties of a material, knowledge of the interplanar angles and their relationships as depicted in a stereographic projection becomes essential. Lange2 originally published crystallographic data which described the structure of bismuth telluride as rhombohedral with the space group A more recent work by Francombe3 presented data which corroborated and refined the original findings of Lange. In addition, Francombe established that there is no coexistence of rhombohedral and hexagonal lattices in bismuth telluride as was suggested by Vasenin and Konovalov,4 and that the structure can be treated as a pseu do hexagonal structure with an axial ratio, c/a, of 6.95 for convenience of presentation and study. The interplanar angles and standard projections for several unalloyed hexagonal metals have been previously published,5-9 but the present work appears to be unique in that it presents data for a rhombohedral compound in pseudohexagonal form. As a pseudohexagonal structure, this material has an extremely large axial ratio as compared to the usual range of approximately 1.5 to 1.9 for the hexagonal metals. As the work carried on by this Company, of which the writer has been in charge for the past two years, is somewhat unique, the following account of it may be of interest, and, on that account, is offered to the Institute without any attempt to claim this practice as the best. Mines. The mines supplying ore to the Company arc situated in three groups: the Guanaco field,.about 80 miles N.E. of the port of Taltal (lat. 25" S., long. 70" 30' W. of Greenwich); the Sierra Overa, about 63 miles S.W. of Taltal; and Paranao, about 42 miles due N. of Taltal (12 miles N. of the small town of Paposo, once famous for its copper-output). Guanaco. This field lies in the center of an absolutely waterless mountainous desert, where not a sign of vegetation can be found for miles. The dryness is such that ivory and horn crack and open, while raw-hide must be used in place of leather, which -would become worthless in a very short time. Water is brought about 21 miles by piping from the Cordillera, but only in small quantities, and costs in the Guanaco $7 (= $1.78 gold) per cubic meter. CINNABAR was discovered in southwestern Arkansas on Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T.7S., R.26W., in April, 1930, and near Antoine Creek in sec. 28, T.6S., R.23W., some 15 miles farther east in May of the same year. It was not, however, until June, 1931, that cinnabar was identified as such in a specimen from the original discovery area sent to W. M. Weigel1 by Walter F. Hintze of Murfreesboro. Almost simultaneously2, in July, 1931, Moritz Norden of Hot Springs identified specimens from the Antoine Creek area as cinnabar. Immediate interest in the district followed the identification of cinnabar and by January, 1932, the district was known to extend as a mineralized belt about one mile wide trending east-northeast from sec. 13, T.7S., R.27W., in Howard County-across central Pike County and into Clark County to sec. 19, T.6S., R.23W., thence extending southeast into sections 33 and 34 of the same township. Since then, cinnabar has been found in sec. 6, T.7S., R.22W., thus giving a total east-west length to the district of approximately 30 miles. Interest focused mainly on the two discovery areas, with the result that mining development has progressed most rapidly in those localities. In the Antoine Creek area the Arkansas Quicksilver Co. has done con-siderable exploration work and has retorted the high-grade ore so .obtained. In the Little Missouri area the Southwestern Quicksilver Co. has had a 12-ton rotary furnace in more or less continuous operation since April, 1932, and has been the largest producer in the district.

BASED on their analyses of growth kinetics, ibbs' and Harris et al.' have recently proposed that the rate of subcritical graphitization of steel is controlled by the rate of diffusion of carbon in ferrite. illert has concluded that this is the rate controlling growth mechanism when the growing graphite particles are relatively large. Harris et al.' also propose that the matrix surrounding a growing graphite particle is plastically deformed to make room for the growing particle. If this plastic deformation does occur, then preferred recrystallization may be observed around the larger particles. If diffusion of carbon in ferrite is rate controlling, then a graphite particle growing in a matrix of, say, tempered martensite or pearlite, should be surrounded by a carbide depleted zone. Thus, the simple metallographic experiments reported here are sufficient to determine whether or not diffusion of carbon in ferrite is the dominant mechanism for the growth of graphite in steel. The present investigation considers graphitization in five alloys. The compositions are given in Table I. Graphitization was carried out at three temperatures: 900°K (627"C), 950°K (677"C), and 990°K ('717°C). Samples were reacted in both the martensitic and the pearlitic initial conditions. In the hypoeutectoid steels, Sets 7 and 8, .and in the hypereutectoid Fe-C binary, Set 6, graphitization was very limited after 1000 hr at temperature. In these samples graphite particles observed were less than 10 p in diam. In the hypereutectoid commercial steels, Sets 1 and 3, large graphite particles (100 p) did not appear until after 250 hr at temperature. The limited number of graphite particles observed and the range of sizes obtained prohibited measurement of growth rates in this investigation. However, in all samples showing graphitization, neithe a carbide depleted zone nor recrystallization was observed. illert's model predicts that diffusion of carbon in ferrite should become dominant for graphite particles larger than about 300 p in diam. The largest graphite particle observed in this investigation was approximately 450 p in diam. No evidence of carbide depletion was noted. Fig. 1 shows a typical graphite particle. Environmental constraints can both delay and raise the cost of a major plant addition, often requiring a complete reevaluation of the plant site and the proposed project. In this case history, steps are presented which were followed in applying for environmental permits for a major addition to a lime plant. Methods are described for determining expected emission increases and for selecting the best control technology for each source. The description progresses through pre-application conferences with control agencies, the formal application procedure, computer modeling the air quality impact, and the methods followed in obtaining a favorable determination.

The Austinville-Ivanhoe lead-zinc deposit occurs in the Lower Cambrian Shady dolomite. This deposit is located in southwestern Virginia in the faulted and folded Appalachian Valley and Ridge province. The ore bodies resemble the chimmey and manto deposits of northern Mexico and are formed by replacement and filling. They are confined to certain favorable zones of the Austinville and Ribbon members of the Shady. Structural and stratigraphic factors combine to control the location and form of the ore bodies. In certain places secondary oxide enrichment of the zinc minerals has contributed to the economic development of the area. It is concluded that the ore is epigenetic and is deposited by hydrothermal solutions rising through the fault "plumbing." Classification is epithermal-telethermal.

In spite of recent trends in the United States toward construction of steam generating plants near mine mouths, and toward use of high-voltage direct current for long-distance transmission of electricity, coal in substantial amounts is being transported over relatively long distances to serve specific needs. As coal is a low-cost bulk commodity which is more suitable for use near the point of origin, some of these long hauls are of considerable interest because they show what can be done under the pressure for more and more coal to support industrial and economic growth. Japan has an Insatiable Appetite for Coal Perhaps the longest U.S. coal journey begins in the east Appalachian Basin of southern Pennsylvania, eastern West Virginia, and southwestern Virginia. High-quality coking coal mined in these areas is shipped by rail to Baltimore, Md., and to Hampton Roads, Va., where the coal is reloaded on freighters for shipment primarily to western Europe and Japan. In 1967, shipments of coal to western Europe totaled 19 million tons, and shipments to Japan totaled 12 million tons. Japan also imports coal from Australia, the U.S.S.R., Canada, Poland, the People's Republic of China, and to a lesser ex- tent from several other countries. In an effort to solve long-term needs, Japanese steel interests have contracted for the purchase from the Kaiser Steel Corp. of 51 million long tons of coking coal over the period 1970 to 1985. The coal will come from the Kaiser Steel Corp. mine near Fernie, British Columbia. This arrangement will reduce Japan's future dependence on Appalachian Basin coal.

Rock-drill steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted. Experimental Work During the late spring of 1939, experiments were undertaken at Homestake in reducing changes in drill-steel gauge from ? in. to 1/16 in. IN 1943, we found, in the new Mather operation, a very unusual and disappointing condition in the footwall rock where all of our main haulageways were to be located. With the exception of a few hundred feet out of the thousands then planned and since driven, all of the openings require support. In general, the ground is not particularly heavy, at least by our standards, but it must be supported and the back carefully covered. Also, our operations require rather wide plat openings (16 to 18 ft) and rather flat curves at the turn-outs, all of which adds to the problem. When this completely unforeseen condition was discovered, ordinary timbering was the only answer, because of the impossibility of obtaining adequate steel supplies in time due to war shortages. Then by the time steel supplies were obtained and a practice developed, we found ourselves with between four and five miles of main haulage drifts and plat openings of a permanent nature, all of which were supported by hardwood timber, some of which had already rotted to an unsafe degree. To give all of the details of our experiments, studies, and experiences would fill a large book, but we were satisfied that our organization had done an excellent job, starting from scratch. You can appreciate our surprise when we discovered that we had added very little to an existing record. Attention was called to a footnote in a copy of "Carnegie Pocket Companion" year 1923. The note read: "Full information as to uses of H-Beams is given in pamphlet entitled 'Steel Mine Timbers.' " A search of our Engineering Library brought to light a pamphlet printed in 1911 showing extensive use of steel for this purpose. Except for welding in place of riveting, we have added very little to the designs in that book. We have, however, developed an experience which proves, at least to our own satisfaction, that steel mine supports pay off under the proper conditions. We are now convinced, in spite of the relatively high initial cost of materials, that steel sets, because of comparatively low installation cost, are actually cheaper than either treated or untreated wood sets, if they are properly designed and adapted. Several Sections in Use: Convenience guided our first experiments in steel sets, since for a number of years, we had used the 4-in. WF, 10 lb per ft section in 10-ft lengths as safety forepoles along with wood forepoles. This section replaced the 40-lb rail which had formerly been used for the purpose. Having the 4-in. WF sections on hand, it was natural that our first experiments in steel sets involved their use. Later, the rolling of the 10-lb section was discontinued in favor of the much stronger 13-lb section, which is now standard for both legs and caps in areas of no particular weight, but which, none the less, require permanent support. Our experiments involved the use of the 10- and 13-lb sections as legs and 6- and 8-in. I beams, 16 and 23 lb per ft, respectively, as caps. Experience soon indicated that, if the ground were heavy enough, and the opening wide enough to require a cap stronger than 13-lb, the 8-in, 23-lb should be used, eliminating the 6-in. I beam. We now know that the 8-in. WF section of the same weight, which we propose to use in the future, is considerably stronger for the amount of money involved. Comparative Strengths: Tables I to IV giving strengths of several species of timbers as compared with the structural sections that we now use have been prepared in accordance with accepted practice. Experience indicates that failure due to compression perpendicular to the grain of the wood does not destroy the effectiveness of a wood set frequently enough to be a practical factor. Therefore, no table of these values is included.

SINCE its first mention in the literature in the eighteenth century1,2 the phenomenon of passivity in metals has stimulated much speculation and attendant controversy as to its nature and cause. No one of the numerous theories so far proposed has been generally accepted. ? Faraday,7 in 1836, associated the passivity of iron with a protective film over the surface of the metal, which materially prevents or slows down reaction with corrosive environments. His theory was that oxidizing acids like nitric acid form an unstable oxygen or oxide layer over the iron surface, which protects the underlying metal from further attack. This concept was simple yet plausible, and without alteration has frequently been assigned in present-day discussions as explanation of the passivity of many metals. With the advent in recent times of stainless steels, it is not surprising that this oxide film theory of passivity proposed by Faraday has been used to explain the phenomenal corrosion resistance of stainless steels and other passive alloys. The passive alloys, such as the chrome-iron alloys, are supposedly covered with a protective oxide film, which forms on exposure of the alloy to air, is extremely stable and self-healing, and accounts for the remarkable resistance of these alloys to corrosion. Within the past few years, several investigators, following the theory of film protection, have attempted to gauge the resistance of the supposed film on steels. Brennert8 and Donker and Dengg9 determined the poten-tial at which a negative ion (e.g., Cl-) moving in an electric field reacted with the metal anode, as detected by increased current flow or change in potential of the steel electrode in an electrolytic cell. The potential corresponding to reaction Brennert called the film break-through potential.

The Philippine Islands have produced no oil commercially; nevertheless, oil is known to be present at various places in the is1ands.l Although all attempts to produce oil commercially have failed, no intelligent, persistent exploration has been carried out. The Richmond Petroleum Corpn. (a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of California) and a syndicate headed by Ralph Arnold are at present engaged in exploring Bondoc Peninsula in Tayabas Province, one of the promising Philippine areas, in a manner that promises to test the petroleum possibilities adequately and intelligently. How can the petroleum resources of an entirely undeveloped area like the Philippines be estimated, where not even the areal extent of the various geologic formations is known? Obviously no calculated figure for assured future production can be derived. Yet a study of the evidence of the occurrence of petroleum, the character of the possible reservoir beds, the probable source rocks, the character and size of favorable structures, and the area over which petroleum-bearing rocks are known to occur, will throw some light on the question. The fact that rocks of the same geologic age and similar composition have been explored and are producing in Borneo, Sumatra, and Java to the south and in Formosa and Japan to the north also affect the problem, so that one can obtain some idea of the quantity of petroleum that may reasonably be expected from the Philippines. It is this measure of the possibilities rather than a definite calculation of petroleum reserves that is presented herewith. This paper will not attempt to describe, nor even to enumerate in detail, the occurrences of petroleum in the Philippines, as such data have already been published. ALTHOUGH considerable information has been published concerning manganese additions to the aluminum bronzes, these data refer principally to the two-phase alloys containing 8 to 11 pct aluminum, with some incidental information on the single-phase alpha solid solution alloys. Strauss1 gives an excellent review of the literature on aluminum bronzes up to 1927 and a bulletin2 of the Copper Development Association brings the bibliography up to 1938. The most extensive work on manganese addition is that of Rosenhain and Lantsberry,3 who investigated alloys ranging up to 10 pct aluminum and up to 10 pct manganese, and presented data on the physical properties of sand-cast, chill-cast, and several wrought alloys. The greater portion of the work, however, concerns alloys ranging from 7 to 10 pct aluminum in the cast condition and sheds little light on the properties of wrought single-phase alloys. Corson4 notes that alloys containing 10 pct manganese and 4 pct aluminum are not hardenable by heat-treatment, while one with 15 pct manganese and 5 pct aluminum can be hardened, but he gives no tensile data on it. In fact, no systematic study of the properties of single-phase wrought alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese has been reported. It should also be noted that most of the investigators worked with alloys containing significant amounts of iron and silicon, and that these impurities, whether intentionally added or accrued from the raw materials used in the preparation of the alloys, may be expected to have a direct bearing on the resultant properties. In the work on alloys made with electrolytic manganese, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation of the copper-manganese-aluminum system for the purpose of establishing the constitution and properties of high-purity alloys. In a recent paper5 the authors reported a metallographic investigation of the alpha solid solution area and the adjoining fields of the copper-manganese-aluminum system up to 50 pct manganese. This study established the alpha-phase boundaries at 50° temperature levels from 400° to 850°C. It was found that the addition of manganese to copper-aluminum alloys decreases the solubility of aluminum in the alpha phase (Fig I), curving the boundary toward the copper-manganese base line. The greatest change occurs in the first 20 to 25 pct manganese, which decreases the solubility of aluminum to approximately 4 pct. With larger amounts of manganese the alpha boundary tends to parallel the copper-manganese binary. At 1300°F and higher,

Because of drilling, completion, and workover practices, the permeability around a wellbore generally is different from the permeability of the formation. The zone with the altered permeability is called "skin" and its effect on the pressure or flow behavior of the well is called "skin effect". Hawkinsl has shown that the radius and the permeability of this zone are related to the skin by: If the permeability in the skin zone is less than that of the formation, the skin is positive; if it is more than that of the formation, the skin is negative. If the two permeabilities are equal, s is zero; that is, there is no skin. Van Everdingen2 and Hurst3 have given mathematical solutions to the case of a zone of reduced permeability around the wellbore. This skin effect is illustrated in Fig. 1. They treat the positive skin as a zone of reduced permeability of infinitesimal thickness around the wellbore. When applied to a well with negative skin, however, their solutions lead to the calculated flowing well pressure which is smaller than the formation pressure, i.e., an injection situation. This is a physical contradiction. In this paper, it is shown that this mathematical difficulty can be overcome by assuming an effective wellbore radius larger than the actual wellbore. Existing solutions2"4 are modified to include the effect of an enlarged wellbore radius, and thus enable the engineer to deal with negative as well as positive skins.
