Expressions are derived for the orientation factors associated with dislocation damping due to dislocation motion in the basal slip plane. The results of the calculation of these factors for zinc crystals aye pvesepzted and the relevance of these results to ultvasonic-attenuation measuvements is discussed. In this paper expressions are derived for the orientation factors associated with damping of sound waves due to dislocation motion in the basal slip plane of hexagonal crystals. For zinc crystals, the orientation factors for dislocation motion in one slip direction only, as well as for simultaneous motion in all three basal slip directions, have been calculated at 1-deg intervals. The results of these calculations are presented in the form of contour diagrams in a sector of a standard polar coordinate graph. The calculations have been carried out for both the traveling- and the standing-wave conditions. The relevance of these results to ultra sonic-attenuation measurements is discussed. Associated with the calculation of the orientation factors, the modes of elastic-wave calculation were also evaluated, according to the procedure previously employed by Hinton and Green.' The results of these calculations are not presented here since similar results have been reported earlier by Mus-grave.2 However, it should be mentioned that, although the qualitative features of Musgrave's results are preserved, the quantitative values are somewhat altered since different values for the elastic constants of zinc were used. ORIENTATION FACTORS It is convenient to refer to three different sets of coordinate axes, Fig. 1, in the following calculations. First, there are the Miller-Bravais axes which are used in describing the Miller-Bravais indices of planes and directions in a hexagonal crystal. These axes are denoted in the conventional manner by a,, a,, a,, and c. The second set of axes used is a rectangular Cartesian coordinate system located as shown in Fig. 1. Note that the x axis coincides with the close-packed direction al [2110], the z axis coincides with the c axis [0001], and the y axis is orthogonal to these two lying in the [0110 ] direction. Finally, a form of Eulerian angles is used to locate the position of the specimen axis. The angle between the specimen axis and the c axis is denoted by 0 and the angle between the projection of the specimen axis on the basal plane and the a, direction is denoted by ø. The majority of observations on plastic deformation of metal crystals indicates that such deformation is caused by the motion of dislocations on a limited number of crystalline planes and in a close-packed direction. In crystals with hexagonal symmetry the most prominent slip plane is the basal plane (0001) and the slip directiops- are one of the close-packed directions, [2110], [ 12101, or [ 1120]. To properly set the stage for the following work, several points must be clarified. First, we want to consider the contribution to the attenuation of elastic waves by dislocations only. While the Granato-Lucke, model for dislocation damping is presently the one most quoted, it is not necessary to refer the present work to it. The only assumption that need be made is that the motion of dislocations absorbs energy from the elastic wave and therefore attenuates it. It is immaterial here how this energy absorption occurs. However, because dislocations have been observed to move most freely on the (0001) plane for hexagonal crystals undergoing plastic deformation, it will be assumed that it is the dislocation motion on this plane which attributes to the observed attenuation. The basic orientation factor, Ok, is essentially the same as that used by Green and Hinton for fee crystals,4 defined by the equation

Of the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of stantlard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inelines, the installation of milling-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1900.

Proton irradiation of high-purity distilled berylliuwz was utilized to introduce various hydrogen contents from 0.00075 to 0.075 at. pct (0.83 to 83 ppm) in a band 0.004 cm wide. After irradiation, the specimens were heat-treated to effect hydrogen agglomeration. Observations of agglomerates in all specimens of the lowest hydrogen content indicate a hydrogen solubility of less than 0.83 ppm in the temperature range 350" to 1050°C. Estimates of the inter diffusion coefficient in the hydrogen solid solution of beryllium were obtained from measurements of the dimensions of hydrogen-depleted zones survounding agglomerated bubbles. A value of (approximately) 3 xlo-' sq cm per sec is obtained for the diffusion coefficient at 850" to 900°C. PREVIOUS investigators found that We solubility of hydrogen in beryllium is very small. Gulbransen and Andrew' state that beryllium does not react with hydrogen at 23 mm Hg between 300" and 900°C. Cotter ill et a1.' report that as-machined beryllium has an adsorbed hydrogen layer of 0.007 cu cm per sq cm of surface. No additional hydrogen is picked up in hydrogen at 0.1 mm Hg and between 200" and 80O°C, or when hydrogen is bubbled through molten beryllium. Beryllium hydride has been reported to exist in an ether solution,394 but decomposes at about 200°C; there is no substantial evidence for the existence of the hydride in the solid phase.

The electrical resistance of titanium as a function of purity and temperature was measured from —325" to 2800°F. Two points of inflection in the data plots were found, and an increase in resistance with increase in temperature above the transformation was observed. IN 1948 Greiner and Ellis' reported on the thermal and electrical properties of titanium, including a study of the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance. The materials used in the research were obtained from the United States Bureau of Mines, where powder metallurgy techniques were being employed for consolidation purposes. These authors found a decreasing resistance with increasing temperature above 1625°F, and concluded that the latter temperature represented the point of transformation from hexagonal close-packed to body-centered cubic structure on heating. They reported a specific resistivity value of 55x10-6 ohm-cm, and showed that dp/dt was positive, decreasing with increasing temperature above ambient. In one of his early texts Hume-Rothery2 mentioned that certain metals, including titanium, exhibited minima in plots of resistance vs temperature. He indicated that this occurred at 212°F. Reporting many years ago on the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance of zirconium, de Boer and Fast³ showed that phase transformation in this sister metal occurred over a range of temperatures, the extent varying with its purity. Graphs of resistance vs temperature, showing transformation effects over a range of several hundred degrees, were presented for relatively impure metal. In the latter case the resistance decreased with increasing temperature throughout the region of partial phase transformation, thereafter increasing as predicted for normal metals by modern theories of the solid state. Since the quality of metal used in previous studies was substandard compared with iodide-type titanium, and in view of the fact that there seemed to be some rather unusual observations in the reported literature, it was decided to undertake a more extensive study of the thermal effects using high purity titanium, and to include temperature ranges beyond those which had been studied in order to ascertain whether or not the characteristics of zirconium would be duplicated. Experimental Materials Materials used in this investigation included commercial quality titanium (Ti-75A produced by the Titanium Metals Corp. of America) in the form of ¼ in. diam rods, and high purity iodide titanium (produced by the Foote Mineral Co.) in the form of crystal bar of irregular size. The latter was cold-swaged into rod form and machined to the desired size. Lead wires to all specimens consisted of 18 gage Ti-75A. Chemical analyses of the stock materials are given in Table I. The variation ox the M, temperature with nitrogen concentration has been determined experinzentally. The free-energy difference between martensite and the parent y Phase at the M, temperature,is computed for Fe-C and Fe-N alloys using recent solubility data fm the Fe-N system and new data for the variatim of the activity of the interstitial solute in the y phase with concentration. The "geometric model" is considered also, and the importance of Zener ordering is noted. It is shown that, although at any chosen concentration the M, temperature and the activity are significantly different in the two alloy systems, the free-energy duference is the same within the limits of experimental error, thus Providing further evidence of the very close similarity between the martensite transformations in Fe-C and Fe-N alloys. TO estimate the free-energy change accompanying the martensite transformation in binary interstitial alloys it is necessary to know the variation of the Ms temperature with interstitial solute concentration and some thermodynamic data. To date, only the Fe-C system has been discussed because this was the only system for which relevant experimental measurements had been made, but even in this case the data available are insufficient to permit the free-energy change to be calculated without the assumption of a thermodynamic model for the y and a solid solutions. The last comprehensive discussion of the topic was by Kaufman, Radcliffe, and Cohen in 1.960.' Since that time Ellis, Davidson, and Bodsworth2 have redeter mined the activity of carbon in y iron as a function of carbon content and Atkinson3 has measured the activity of nitrogen in Fe-N austenite. The M, temperature of Fe-N is reported in the present paper. Thus, it is now possible to assess the free-energy change accompanying the martensite transformation in Fe-N alloys on the same basis as that used to assess the change in Fe-C alloys. This comparison is of interest because it has been shown recently4 that the structure of the martensite formed in Fe-N alloys changes with nitrogen content in a manner exactly parallel to the changes in structure in the Fe-C series and that the strain associated with the distortion of the iron lattice in either the y or the a phase by a nitrogen atom is the same as that produced by a carbon atom. The work to be described tests whether or not this close similarity between the two systems extends to the thermodynamics of the martensitic transformations. THE Ms TEMPERATURES FOR Fe-N MARTENSITE Bose and Hawkes5 found the M, temperature of a eutectoid Fe-N alloy (2.35 wt pct N) to be 35°C. This single determination appears to be the only reported measurement of the M, temperature of an Fe-N alloy. In the present work a series of more than fifteen different specimens containing between 0 and 2.7 wt pct N were prepared by controlled nitriding of pure iron wire 0.010 in. diam. The iron was supplied by B.I.S.R.A. and was designated ACN2. The nitriding procedure, all aspects of which are critical, has been described in detail elsewhere.' Each specimen was quenched from the austenitizing temperature into brine at 20°C without removing the specimen from the ammonia-hydrogen atmosphere in which it was ni-trided. Alloys containing up to 0.7 wt pct N were fully martensitic. More concentrated alloys contained progressively more retained austenite. At 2.34 wt pct N the specimen was completely austenitic after quenching to 20°C. The M, temperature of specimens with M, temperature above 20°C (those containing less than 2.35 wt pct N) was determined by a thermal arrest technique. For the more concentrated alloys (2.35 to 2.70 wt pct N) the variation of electrical resistance with temperature down to -196°C was used. Unlike Fe-C alloys, Fe-N alloys cannot be reaus-tenitized in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere because excessive loss of nitrogen occurs, even in short times, at high temperatures. Consequently, the alloys were reaustenitized in the ammonia-hydrogen mixture corresponding to nitrogen equilibrium at the temperatures used. The specimens were quenched in a blast of cold hydrogen gas and the temperature, measured by a thermocouple welded to the 2.5-in.-long specimen, was recorded on a high-speed recorder. In the first experiments 0.002-in.-diam chromel-alumel wire thermocouples were used but it was found that these gave erroneous readings due to contamination by nitrogen pickup. Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh wires of 0.002 in. diam were found to be satisfactory. Further details of the experiments are available in the original thesis.7 The cooling rate was controlled between 400° and 4000°C per sec by adjusting the hydrogen pressure. At least three cooling curves were obtained for each composition. Each specimen was analyzed for nitrogen after quenching. To aid in the accurate location of the martensite arrest points a series of cooling curves of 0.010-in.-diam platinum wire were recorded and these, which did not contain an arrest, were used as comparison standards. Four specimens, each in the form of a 3-in. loop, were prepared from each of the four alloys containing more than 2.35 wt pct N. One specimen was used for nitrogen analysis, one for X-ray diffraction, and two for resistance measurements below 20°C. The latter specimens were quenched from 20°C into constant-temperature baths at selected lower temperatures.

Backfilling of stopes and other underground openings in the Homestake mine with sand tailings was undertaken primarily to reduce surface subsidence, which was wrecking much of the surface plant and a substantial part of the town, and to make possible maintenance of openings into the top of pillar stopes as mining progressed. The progress of this type of filling has been rapid and the results very satisfactory. Sand is now used in filling timbered stopes, shrinkage stopes, and abandoned drifts and crosscuts. A permanent pipe-line system for transporting sand tailings into the mine by gravity has been installed. The close filling of all stopes has resulted in important benefits other than the two major ones. The ore bodies in the Homestake mine occur as replacements in one distinctive layer of the metamorphosed pre-Cambrian sediments along a group of minor folds that together form a complex anticline that pitches at 35" to 40' to the southeast. The ore bodies are extraordinary for their magnitude. Widths of over 300 ft. have been mined and continuous ore has been followed for over 1200 ft. along the strike on some of the upper levels. Mining has been by shrinkage stoping with square-set mining of crowns and pillars. In the standard plan, shrinkage stopes 60 ft. in the direction of strike and the full width of the ore have been taken up to within 25 ft. of the level above. After filling, the crown has been mined by square-set methods, as have also the 40-ft. pillars between shrinkage stopes. In former days, when the supply of ore seemed inexhaustible, the mining of pillars was allowed to lag far behind because of the high cost. Many pillars were rather badly fractured on the level and in some places between levels. Coarse waste was used for backfilling all stopes, but in pillars it became increasingly difficult to maintain haulageways for the transportation of this fill over the top of the stopes as mining progressed. The cost of maintaining these crosscuts was excessive and in many pillars practically impossible. Therefore it became the practice to fill pillar stopes by tapping the back and sides of the stopes.

INTRODUCTION Metallic minerals have been formed only through complex geologic processes which took place at certain stages of the earth's histrory. Their concentration, abundance, and distribution are, therefore, restricted geologically, and very small in global scale. Ore is a mineral deposit or mineral concentration from which metals can be economically extracted by the contemporaneous technology. By this definition, several factors should be considered before any mineral deposit is regarded as an ore. The grade of mineral concentration and the scale of the reserve are most important. Demand for the metal and its price are the other factors. Advancement of technology in mining and extraction are also vital. Copper, for example, is now commonly extracted from the ores containing less than 0.3% of the metal. However, in the 1700's the common minerable grade was about 13%, and in the 1900's between 5 to 2.5%. This decrease in minerable grade is a function of not only the demand for copper, but also technological progress in mining and metal extraction in this case. Availability of ores has recently been subject to political factors, which were not the primary concern in the past. The petroleum of the Middle East is the prominent example. The metallic minerals are classified into three categories. The first one is the minerals free from these factors mentioned above. Iron and manganese belong to this category. The second category include aluminum, copper, nickel, cobalt, titanium, lead and zinc. These metals can be provided by the future progress in technology which enables the use of lower grade deposits. The third one represents the metals whose occurrence is geologically limited, and, thus, subject to the political factors. Niobium and tantalium are the example. In this article, I discuss these minerals in detail to give an outline of the factors which brought their concentration, distribution and availability. SELECTED MINERAL CONCENTRATIONS Iron Major iron ore deposits are the features of the relics of ancient continental crusts. They are found in all the continents where the Precambrian rocks expose. They do not occur in the oldest rocks (3,000my old) nor in the youngest ones (600my old). They are sedimentary rocks, normally, exhibiting alternations of bands of iron oxides (magnetite and hematite) or iron silicates (especially greenalite), and bands of silica, variously described as jasper, quartzite and chert. The best known banded iron ore deposits exist in the Lake Superior region of the North America, and their distribution extends at intervals to Labrador of Canada. Other examples occur in the U.S.S.R. Brazil, Venezela, India, the mainland China, and southern and western Africa (Liberia and Guines) (Table 1). Recently large deposits have been discovered in the Hammersley region of the western Australia, and northern and central region of Brazil. These ore deposits were originally formed in shallow seas where simple but abundant life existed. After the deposition, enrichment processes , related to tropical weathering, have brought about wholesale removal of silica to produce the deposits of best quality. Ores with 50-60% iron represent the best products in the Precambrian fields. Since local reserves of this high grade ores approach to exhaustion, benefication processes have been used effectively to upgrade much leaner ores (for example, taconite with 20-25% iron in Minesota, U.S.A.). There are two other types of iron deposits. Ironstone, a sedimentary rock containing goethite, chamosite and siderite, first appeared in early Paleozoic times in the stratigraphic record, and reached its Zenith in the Jurassic. Similar bedded iron deposits are found in the belt from the Cleveland Hills to Oxford in England, and in the "minette" oolitic ores of Alsace-Lorraine in Luxenburg and France. The iron content of these ironstones seldom exceed 30%, but they usually contain calcite and are self-fluxing. They also have phosphorous as undesirable impurity. Because of the grade and impurities, they require more fuel than the Precambrian ores. The third type of iron ore is associated with igneous activity and consists of magnetite and some hematite, and apatite. This deposit is believed to be a product of magmatic differenciation. It occurs in Kiruna of Arctic Sweden. The iron ore, therefore, present no global shortage problem. They extend to considerable depths. Their concentration is largest among the metals. If low grades were treated, the resource can be stepped up much substantially. Manganese Manganese is a ferro--alloy metal, thus, essential to the manufacture of sound steel. Manganese comes from manganese oxide and silicate ores. Many minerals contain manganese, but only a few oxides, silicates, and, in some places, carbonates (rhodecrosite) are mined as ore. Victor G. Hills, Cripple Creek, Colo. (communication to the Secretary): In continuation of the subject of the perform ance of "baby machine-drills," presented by Mr. Thane, I sub mit the following records of work done with these drills in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. Two years ago, the Anchoria-Leland mine began to use baby drills ; and, to make the experiment more complete, began by purchasing two machines, of the same size, but of different make. The little drills were first used for stoping and up raising, in which they achieved at once an unqualified success. Soon after, they began to be used for the smaller branch-drifts and prospecting cross-cuts, while the large two-man drills were still used for the main drifts. Now they have almost entirely superseded the large drills, since it has been found that they will do any ordinary work in the mine at less cost, both for labor and for powder, per ton of rock broken. The large drills, of course, make more rapid progress; but it is only where time is a specially important factor that they are now used. The Portland mine, where, until within a year, only the large machines were used, is now using some small drills for stoping, and also for drifting. Mr. Thane speaks of having two men to operate a baby-drill; but in this district the baby-machine is always worked by one man without help. Again, in Prof. Christy's postscript, the quoted extract from a letter of Mr. L. T. Seymour, the South African engineer, mentions a " 2 1/2-inch Little Giant," as though that were the smallest machine used in that region. These statements leave some doubt as to just what Mr. Thane means by a " baby-drill." To avoid any such uncertainty as to the present communication, I will say that the large or two-man drill in common use at Cripple Creek has a 3 1/8-inch cylinder; while a few mines employ a 3-inch, and a few, in running large tunnels, a 3 1/2-inch drill. With the increasing military significance of the arctic, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' ice- tunneling research program has been instituted to determine the feasibility of excavating large under- ice openings. Such openings would provide for year- around storage of material and housing of personnel, independent of surface weather conditions. This unique ice mining operation has been carried on in the tunnels at Camp Tuto, Greenland, during the summers of 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958 by the U.S. Army Snow, Ice, and Permafrost Research Establishment (USA SIPRE), Wilmette, Ill. Supervisory personnel for the tunneling projects principally have been civilian mining engineers and mining engineering students from Colorado School of Mines. They have been employed under contract between USA SIPRE and the Denver Research Institute (DRI) of the University of Denver, Denver, Colo. Laborers have been enlisted military personnel attached to the U.S. Army Polar Research & Development Center (USA PR&DC) , Ft. Belvoir, Va.

ADEQUATE treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has been termed ? intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence-air, water, food. But "intrinsic value" cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed "intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may he intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term " intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent; Intrinsic value must from its nature be permanent and unchangeable.

A RATHER detailed description of the entire plant and leaching process was given in a paper recently presented to the Institute,1 so this paper will cover briefly only the crushing practice of the New Cornelia Copper Co. for the year, 1918. The ore, which is mined by steam shovels and loaded in side-dump cars, passes through two crushing plants. These crushing plants were constructed to crush the ore required by a leaching plant of 5000 tons daily, capacity, during a crushing period of 16 hours. The primary plant reduces to less than 3 in. (76 mm.) and the secondary plant, to ¼ in. (6.35 mm.), which is sufficiently fine for satisfactory percolation of solution through the ore in the leaching tanks, and to give good extraction. The ore is then conveyed to the leaching tanks by a system of 28-in.. (71-cm.) belt conveyors. On the way to the leaching tanks, it passes through an automatic sampling plant, where a 1-per cent. sample is taken. From the primary crushing plant, the ore is conveyed by two 36-in. (91-cm.) belt conveyors to a 10,000-ton steel storage bin, with a reinforced-concrete flat bottom. The ore discharges from the bottom of this bin onto four 20-in. belt conveyors, which deliver it to the four units of crushers in the secondary crushing plant. There is no storage bin between the mine and the primary crushing plant. The ore breaks very coarse, is very hard, and contains a great many boulders, some as large as 4 ½ by 4 1/2 by 10 ft. (1.3 by 1.3 by 3 m.). Jams form in the bowl of the coarse crusher in the primary crushing plant, as a consequence, and are freed by means of an immense steel hook operated from a 40-ton electric traveling crane.

Concentrates at the rate of 1000 tons a day are being smelted by International Nickel Co.'s new commercial flash smelting furnace. Developed by Inco, the process is a radical departure from the former practice which involved conventional smelting in coal-fired reverberatory furnaces. In the new process copper flotation concentrate and flux are injected horizontally with oxygen into a specially designed reverberatory furnace, and smelting temperature is maintained solely by the flash combustion of iron and sulphur while the particles are in suspension. The major benefits of this new process stem from two sources: 1)-Substitution of energy from local resources for imported coal; and 2)-Production of liquid sulphur dioxide, replacing equivalent imported sulphur. A measure of these benefits is afforded by considering the saving, in 1954, of 60,000 tons of coal and the production of 70,000 tons of liquid sulphur dioxide, equivalent to 35,000 tons of sulphur.

Isothermal annealing of quenched Fe3Al reveals that the superlattice forms by the nucleation and growth of ordered domains. The activation energy for isothermal ordering and initial domain growth is -29 keal per mole, which is thought to he the activation energy for vacancy migration. Domain growth, in the absence of excess vacancies, has an activation energy of -100 keal per mole. A maximum in the hardness is observed when the structure consists Of ordered domains, -35-4 in size, growing into a short-range ordered matrix and, also as a function of degree of order, S, with an infinite domain size at S = 0.4 to 0.5. It is proposed that both maxima are due to a transition from deformation by unit dislocations to deformation by superdislocntions. FE-AL alloys containing more than -23 at. pet Al, when quenched from above the critical temperature for the Fe3A1 type of order, always contain the maximum possible amount of FeAl (B2) type of order' (see Fig. 1). Thus when the Fe3A1 superlattice forms, in a 25 at, pet A1 alloy, it does so from an imperfect FeAl structure. The formation of the Fe3Al superlattice has been the subject of several recent X-ray,1, 2 electrical-resistivity,3"6 and dilatometric3 investigations. McQueen and Kuczynski3 concluded that the isotherma1 ordering of Fe3Al, after quenching from 800°C (T,, the critical temperature for order, is 55O°C), takes place by the nucleation and growth of ordered domains. However, Feder and Cahn4 found that the isothermal ordering was complex but more like a homogeneous nucleation process than a nucleation and growth process. Lawley and Cahn2 reported that the degree of order is a continuous function of temperature which is a characteristic of a homogeneous nucleation process. Thus, the evidence is conflicting as to the nature of the Fe3Al ordering reaction. Lipson7 was the first to suggest that ordered domains should exist in the Fe3A1 structure since, as

Pegasus' Gold Ltd. operates two gold/silver heap leaching operations in the Little Rockies area of Montana. The Little Rockies has produced gold from underground operations on an intermittent basis from the 1880's to the early 1950's and from the open-pits on a continuous basis since 1979. Run-of-the-mine ore is drilled, blasted, sorted, loaded and hauled. The waste is dumped and compacted into 30 meter (100 foot) fills to be used for future leach pads. The leach pads have a central drain system and the impermeable membrane is constructed of bentonite and 30 mil PVC. The plants which have beenexpanded to 4900 Ipm (1300 gpm) capacity use the Merrill-Crowe process for gold and silver recovery. 4600 liters (1200 gpm) of the 9500 Ipm (2500 gpm) spray capacity is recycled through the old leach pads for upgrading before being processed. The gold/silver precipitate is smelted and the resultant dore' is shipped to a buyerhefiner. 1983 projected production is 2,177 kg (70,000 02s) of gold at a cost of less than $10/gm.
