METALLURGISTS and engineers have always been interested in the mechanism of high-speed deformation because metals are rapidly deformed in various applications and manufacturing processes. The deformation of metals by impact loads has recently engaged the attention of a number of investigators. Many of their results have not been disclosed but some of the published investigations1-8 have shown that the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation generally increase with increasing strain rate. The investigation reported herein is an attempt to determine the reason for this increase in strength and elongation. Single-crystal copper specimens were broken in tension at impact velocities up to 100 ft. per sec. The distribution of slip bands in the fractured crystals was found to depend upon the strain rate. In the bars broken at high speeds, the slip bands appear to be more numerous. This might account for the higher strength as well as the greater elongation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of copper (approximately 99.98 per cent) were made in graphite molds by the conventional method of lowering the mold out of the hot zone of a hydrogen furnace at a rate of one inch per hour. Solidification progressed from the bottom upward, forming a single crystal. The crystals were about 0.30 in. in diameter and 4 in. long. They were made into test bars by sliding threaded steel bushings over each end of a crystal and then flowing silver solder between the crystal and the bushing. The inside diameter of the bushings was slightly greater than the diameter of the crystals, to allow space for the silver solder. The bushings were placed so that the gauge length of the crystals was one inch. The assembly is shown in Fig. I, with two views of a fractured crystal. Annealed polycrystalline copper bars of similar shape were machined from solid stock. X-ray measurements were made on all single crystals to determine their orienta¬tions. The results are shown in Fig. 2, where the location of the axis of each specimen is indicated on a standard projection. The bars were broken in a commercial variable-velocity tension im¬pact machine, which has been described in detail elsewhere.7,8 The stress and strain were recorded by means of wire strain gauges and a special commercial oscillo-raph, also described in detail elsewhere.9,10 The equipment and method can be briefly described as follows. This paper presents some of the problems encountered and solved by the construction industry during recent years while pressure grouting the foundation rock of dams. Pressure grouting has become "Standard Operational Procedure" and consequently many hundreds of thousands of bags of cement have been used for that purpose. There is nothing weird, mystical, or even particularly difficult about the basic idea. Holes are drilled in the rock and grout is pumped into them. This procedure is used to shut off the flow of water under the dam and to reduce the uplift on the dam. Like most other engineering and construction problems, the fundamental principle is simplicity itself, but some of the "minor details" are rather complex. When faced with the problem of actually forcing the grout into the rock, or keeping it there once it has been injected, an engineer frequently has need for all of the ingenuity and initiative that he has at his disposal. It is proposed to discuss these minor details at length, even at the risk of boring the reader. The difference between success and failure in a grouting program can well hinge upon some such detail that may not be fully understood. Pressure grouting is a method used to make good foundations from bad ones by plugging actual or potential passages within the rock through which water might escape and thereby diminish or even destroy the usefulness of the dam. In some special cases, pressure grouting has been used for the purpose of consolidating broken rock to increase its bearing power. Lacking this useful method, many of the dams constructed during recent years could not have been built. Most of the really excellent dam sites in this country have been utilized long ago. Consequently it becomes necessary to find methods of utilizing the less desirable sites. Pressure grouting plays a vital role in the methods developed. Engineers have learned the hard way, that the term "solid rock" is a misnomer. Solid rock does not exist to any considerable extent in nature. Practically all rock contains imperfections such as shrinkage cracks, bedding planes, joints, solution channels, folds, shear zones, crush zones, and the like. All these imperfections are weaknesses through which ground water is likely to flow. The function of rock grouting is to rectify these imperfections and make the rock as nearly "solid" as practicable. The location, direction, depth and number of grout holes to be drilled are important. Clearly, a hole must pierce fractures in order to serve a useful purpose, for grout cannot be forced into the rock itself. Were it possible to determine the pattern and extent of the cracks within the rock, it might be feasible to drill two or three strategically placed holes so as to make practicable the grouting of the whole integrated network of cracks from them. Such is not the case. While a study of the geology, surface indications, and drill cores is helpful in gaining an idea of subsurface conditions, in the final analysis, the seams must be located by trial and error methods. In a brief summary of the many occurrences of fluorspar in our western states, it is not possible to go into detail in regard to the geology, mining and milling methods, and reserves about individual deposits. Rather a broad review is made of the occurrences and an analysis of how the western deposits may fit into our future domestic economy is presented. General Statement on Fluorspar Situation Fluorspar has been used for years as a flux in the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel, in foundry cupolas for melting pig iron, in the manufacture of opalescent glass and in the preparation of hydrofluoric acid. In 1880 the annual production of fluorspar in the United States was around 4000 tons per year. By 1900 it was up to 21,656 tons and between 1902 and 1908 it averaged about 40,000 tons annually. Prices were then so low, by present standards, that it seems impossible to believe now that mining could have been performed profitably at the price levels then prevailing. In 1890 fluorspar sold at the mines for $6.70 per ton, in 1901 for $5.81, in 1916 for 85.92. When the United States entered World War I, flyorspar production and price skyrocketed; the production reached 263,817 tons in 1918, with prices above $20.00 per ton, and prices were even higher in 1919 and 1920. After 1920, the domestic production fell from the 1918 level to about 125,000 tons annually and the average price dropped back to about $18.00 per ton. By 1935 the average price had fallen to $15.00, but in 1940 with a rising demand the average price of all grades had gone back up to $20.31. Today it is 75 per cent higher than in 1940 and presumably the price of acid grade at .least would be even higher if it were not for price ceilings. The first subsequent year that the domestic production exceeded that of 1918 was 1941, and the 1944 production is expected to exceed 400,000 tons, or over one and a half times that of 1918. In five-year periods, average production and imports were as are shown in Table I. Many people concerned with the consumption of fluorspar believe that the postwar period ahead will show a repetition of price trends of the last such period. They believe that imports will be again an important factor in the available supply and the price will fall back gradually toward the prewar level. IT is now well known that the structure of aluminum-silicon alloys can be refined in a rather remarkable manner, with consequent improvement of physical properties, by certain treatments applied to the molten metal shortly before casting. The differences between the treated and the untreated alloys are so marked that special terms are used to distinguish them, the untreated alloys being referred to as "normal" and the treated alloys as "modified." The first practical method of accomplishing this result was that of A. Pacz,1 which consists in treating the molten metal with a, salt flux of which the, active ingredient is sodium fluoride. The result can also be brought about, and in a more economical manner, by the addition of small quantities of metallic sodium (or potassium) to the molten alloy shortly before casting.2 The action of the Pacz flux evidently consists essentially in the production of free sodium by the reaction of sodium fluoride with aluminum. The changing of a normal alloy to a modified alloy is referred to as "modification' and any process for accomplishing this result is a "modifying" process. Modified aluminum-silicon alloys were introduced several years ago, and it has been demonstrated both in the laboratory and in commercial practice that it is no simple matter to produce castings having the maximum or nearly the maximum properties which under favorable circumstances can be obtained. The alloys are rather sensitive to small changes in chemical composition, and the modifying process must be carried out in a very particular manner to obtain the best results. The relationship between the electromotive force (E.M.F.) across a shale barrier and the concentrations of sodium chloride solutions on either side has been investigated. It is shown that the action of a shale barrier is analogous to a glass membrane separating two acid solutions of different hydrogen ion concentrations. The shale behaves as a sodium electrode and is responsive to the activities of the sodium ions in the two solutions in such a way that the potential can be calculated by means of the Nernst equation. This conclusion is confirmed by laboratory experiments. In a borehole the total E.M.F. of a shale cell is the algebraic sum of the ~otential across the shale and a boundary potential. The relationship between total E.M.F. and the resistivity ratio of two sodium chloride solutions is indicated for a number of formation temperatures. The E.M.F. thus predicted is then compared with the .elf potential read from an electric log and good agreement is demonstrated. Based on both the self potential and resistivity curves of the electrical log. a method is given for calculating connate water content in a bed having in-tergranular porosity and containing both connate water and hydrocarbons. INTRODUCTION The first paper on electrical well logging by C. and M. Schlumberger and E. G. Leonardon in 1934' attributed the self potential curve principally to streaming potentials, i.e. to electroki-netic effects. Almost immediately great difficulties were encountered in reconciling many of the curves they obtained with this interpretation. and a ~econd paper' by the same authors soon appeared. In this second paper self potentials were attributed to the combined effects of streaming potentials and electrochemical potentials, the electrochemical potential being considered the result mainly of the interaction of fluids of differing salt concentrations, i.e. a boundary potential, and partly of potentials set up at the faces of impermeable materials. Some experiments involving a gray clay for the impermeable material were quated. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon deduced from the equation for a simple boundary ~otential that the electrochemical potential, as opposed to the electrokinetic potential, could be expressed in the form E=Klog- .......1 pe where K is a constant, pm the mud resistivity. p, the resistivity of the connate water in a porous bed. However, no general expression for the constant K was obtained. Although the literature between 1934 and 1943 contains a number of quotations of their results, the valuable work of the Schlumbergers and Leonardon was not extended so that the electrochemical potential has been generally attributed wholly to boundary potentials between the mud in the borehole and the connate waters in porous formations. Unfortunately, however, the fundamental premise of all these papers, that a boundary potential can give rise to current flow in a borehole, is thermodynamically untenable. As will be shown. the fact that the electrochemical potential can be fairly accurately express as E = K log pm/pc, a form in which a boundary potential may also be written, is partly fortuitous. The boundary potential is indeed an integral part of the expression for the electrochemical potential in a horehole, but in magnitude it represents only about 20% of the total potential. In 1943 an important step in the elucidation of electrochemical potentials was made by Mounce and Rust3 who showed that if a wall of shale separated two compartments which contained saline solutions of different concentrations, and if the two solutions were themselves brought into contact in the pores of a porous inert membrane (such as unglazed porcelain) a current flowed through the shale and saline solutions. The direction of positive current was from the shale into the more dilute solution. The paper of Mounce and Rust, while repeating some of the observations of the Schlumbergers and Leonardon, seems to be the first to show that the shale was the seat of a genuine electrochemical effect capable of causing current flow. In the same paper Mounce and Rust pointed out the similarity between the fundamental conditions of their experiment and the conditions which existed when a bed of shale in the ground was simultaneously in contact with a porous sand containing saline connate water and mud fluid of salinity different from that of the water in the sand. Since it is now generally recognized that the S.P. curve measures ohmic potential changes in the mud fluid in the well bore resulting from changes in current flow, it is apparent that currents having their origin in the electrochemical interaction of mud filtrate and connate waters with shale beds are a very important portion of the total S.P. The work of Mounce and Rusta and others appears to indicate that, in general, the electrochemical portion of a particular kick on a S.P. curve far exceeds any electrokinetic potentials resulting either from streaming potentials or Dorn effects. The Dorn effect, or sedimentation potential. arises when small particles are allowed to fall through certain fluids under the influence of gravity. a difference of potential being observe? between two electrodes placed at different levels in the stream of falling particles. The Dorn effect is unlikely to affect seriously the S.P. curve as now measured. A successful analysis of the electrochemical aspects of the S.P. log should

The John Fritz Medal is awarded from time to time for notable scientific or industrial achievement by a board composed of representatives from the four engineering Societies. The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1917, to Dr. Henry Marion Howe, for his "investigations in metallurgy, especially in the metallography of Iron and Steel." The presentation ceremonies were held in the Auditorium of the United Engineering Societies' Building, New York, on Thursday evening, May 10. Mr. Ambrose Swasey, Chairman of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award, presided, and addresses were delivered by Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary Emeritus of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and Dr. Ira N. Hollis, President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Professor Albert Sauveur, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, presented the medal, and the ceremonies concluded with the response of Dr. Howe.

THE problem of reaction rates in the open-hearth process is essentially that of trying to form a fairly clear picture of the "chemical mechanisms" in the bath. Quantitative data on reaction rates would perhaps not be of much practical importance even if they were available; however, what few approximate data there are can be used in combination with data given in Chapters 16 and 17 to sketch a picture of the "chemical mechanics" of the open-hearth process that is consistent with essentially all the present available evidence. The result may later be found incorrect in many details but even so it will illustrate certain useful methods for obtaining a clearer understanding of the process. Consistent with the treatment in Chapter 15, but in simpler terms, we may say that chemical reactions in general involve the following elements or steps: 1. The reacting molecules are mixed together in space in such fashion as to favor collisions among them. 2. Units of what is usually an intermediate molecular arrangement called an activated complex are formed at a certain rate, depending on temperature and concentrations. 3. These activated complex units decompose into the reaction products (this step usually assumed to be so rapid as never to limit the over-all process). 4. In any of these steps, heat energy may have to flow into, or away from, the reaction zone to permit the reaction to proceed. 5. The products of reaction will usually have to move out of the way to permit further reaction. The temperature factor enters mainly through step 2, and its effect is very marked. (What is called temperature is really the mean energy content of all the molecules of the substance involved; at any one temperature a certain proportion of the moleculea will have much higher energy content than the mean value.) The self-diffusivity of Ag10 has been measured as a function of temperature and composition in AgMg. a CsCl-type intermetallic compound with a substitutional defect structure on both sides of the stoichiometric (50 at. pct Mg) composition. These measurements show that In D increases linearly, and both In Do and Q decrease linearly with deviation from stoichiometry. The slopes of these lines are significantly steeper in magnesium-rich alloys. Equations for the variation of Q with composition have been derived by application of the theory of random walk processes on the assumption that diffusion in compounds of this type takes place by the six-jump cycle mechanism of Huntington, Elcock, and McCombie. The favorable agreement obtained with experiment furnishes fresh support for the correctness of this assumption. A principal result of this treatment is that. although the concentration of vacancies is considerably higher in the silver sublattice than in the magnesium sublattice, the acfivation energies for movement of the magnesium sublattice vacancies are so much lower that these vacancies are responsible for effectively all diffusion of silver in this compound. A tendency for vacancies of both types to be kinetically bound to wrong atoms is also noted. THIS study was undertaken to examine the influence of substitutional defects upon self-diffusion in an intermetallic compound, AgMg, with a CsCl-type crystal structure. The CsCl structure is exception- ally simple. At the equiatomic or stoichiometric composition in a binary alloy, it consists of two interpenetrating simple cubic sublattices, each of which is exclusively populated by the atoms of one species. When atomic size and other factors are favorable, deviations from stoichiometry can be entirely accommodated by the substitution of atoms of the species present in excess of 50 at. pct on the sublattice of the other species on a one-for-one basis. Under this condition, the only vacancies present are those formed by thermal activation. The excess atoms thus incorporated into the sublattice of the minority species may be considered as substitutional defects in this sublattice. Several X-ray studies have shown that the defect structure of AgMg is entirely of the substitutional type on both sides of the stoichiometric composition.1"3 The thermodynamic investigation of Kachi indicates that, aside from a low level of thermal disorder and these constitutional defects, order is maintained to the solidus temperature. This compound is therefore a particularly useful vehicle for a study of the influence of substitutional defects upon diffusion kinetics. Other advantages of AgMg for this purpose include: the broad composition region, as much as approximately 10 at. pct on either side of the stoichiometric (50 at. pct Mg), in which the compound is stable; the comparatively low temperature range of the solidus (820°C and below),5 making diffusion anneals near this range experimentally convenient; the reasonably good machinability of the compound, permitting utilization of the standard sectioning method of radiotracer analysis; and the availability of a good tracer, A for one of the constituent species. Activities of oxides in the ternary FeO-MnO-SiO system are calculated from data on the binaries, using the Gibbs -Schuhmann method. These activity data are used, together with thermodynamic relations, to calculate the contents of oxygen, silicon, and manganese in liquid iron, and the composition of the corresponding oxide phases in equilibrium with it. Excellent agreement was found between calculated and experimental metal compositions, indicating that thermodynamic methods, such as those presented, can supply useful data on slag-metal equilibria, and are therefore capable of wider application. When molten steel containing oxygen is treated with a deoxidizer, the product of the reaction is composed of the oxides of the deoxidizing elements together with more or less iron oxide. This assemblage of oxides is presumably very close to equilibrium with the melt since it is formed directly from elements dissolved in it. Therefore, it is likely that metal analyses corresponding to a given oxide phase composition are calculable with considerable precision where sufficient information is available on activities in both phases. The present study was made to test this hypothesis in the case of deoxidation by silicon and manganese. Here experimental data on the relationship among oxygen, silicon, and manganese in the metal phase are available, as are activity data for the MnO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, and FeO-MnO binary systems. A further objective was to demonstrate in a specific example how gaps in the data may be filled by judicious interpolation, and how the Gibbs-Schuhmann method is applied to obtain activities in ternary systems. The rigorous derivation of the latter, requiring considerable facility in handling partial differential equations, tends to mask the real simplicity of the method, and repel the very engineers and experimenters who would benefit the most from its use. I) GENERAL PROCEDURE Deoxidation of steel with silicon and manganese results in the formation of two phases, metal and oxide. The number of components is four—Fe, Mn, Si, and 0. The phase rule then gives the number of degrees of freedom: If temperature and pressure are fixed, 2 deg of freedom remain. Consequently, it suffices to fix the concentration of two of the components of the system for all the concentrations to be determined and, at least in principle, calculable. The practical problem is then to discover a straightforward method of calculation with a minimum of trial and error solutions. The type of reactions to be dealt with are like the following: Si (in steel) + 2 O(in steel) = SiO2(in oxide phase) The standard free energy of this reaction is readily obtained from the literature, so that the equilibrium constant can be calculated by the expression: Since the metallurgist is concerned with percentages rather than activities, a real solution requires information that will permit activities to be converted to concentrations. This information is fairly adequate for the elements dissolved in molten steel, but is not available for the FeO-MnO-SiO2 oxide system. Therefore, the first step in this study was to find the relation between activity and concentration for the three oxides making up the system. The next step was the calculation of slag and metal compositions that are in equilibrium with one another. As shown by the phase rule, it is sufficient to assume the values of two composition variables in order to calculate the rest. But which two are picked makes a vast difference in how difficult the calculation turns out to be, so that it is necessary to make preliminary trial of several routes to find the easiest one. A convenient method is to begin with the slag, and to pick FeO concentration and that of one of the other oxides. Starting with the relation between oxygen dissolved in the liquid steel and FeO in the slag permits a good first estimate to be made of the oxygen content of the steel in equilibrium with FeO, because the iron content being fairly close to 100 pct, Fe has an activity close to unity. Using this first estimate of oxygen activity, approximate values of the manganese and silicon contents of the melt are readily calculated from the appropriate equilibrium constants. The effect of tempering temperature and time upon the properties of quenched steel is clearly a subject of great practical importance, as well as of considerable theoretical interest. It would be very desirable to be able to predict the properties of a quenched steel when given any selected tempering cycle, with a minimum of experimental work upon that heat or even type of steel. Two problems are involved: one consists of relating the structure obtained to the physical properties, and will not be discussed here; the other, with which this paper deals, involves the relations of time, temperature and composition with the structure obtained 011 tempering. Indentation hardness is perhaps the most convenient quantitative measure of the tempered structure, or of what might be called the "degree of tempering." Undoubtedly, it is not an exact measure, and in some cases (as when temper-brittleness occurs) pieces of the same quenched and tempered steel may have widely differing properties at the same hardness. However, hardness has the advantage of being simple to determine and is certainly the most widely used indication of the degree of tempering. Moreover, for fully quenched steels that are not temper-brittle and do not contain retained austenite when quenched, it appears that, in general, if the hardness of the steel is the same, the tensile and impact properties will also be identical, whether a high or a low tempering temperature is used. The tempering charts available in the metallurgical literature usually give the hardness as a function of tempering temperature for only one tempering time. However, in practice, tempering times frequently vary, and a method of converting tempering curves for one time to tempering curves for some other time would be very valuable. It is also advantageous, in determining the tempering treatment necessary for a given part, not to have to temper samples at several temperatures for the time used for the commercial tempering operation. A more satisfactory procedure would be to employ times of the order of 10 to 30 min., rather than 5 or 10 hr., and if possible to use only one temperature. Furthermore, it is frequently desirable, for reasons such as temper-brittleness,* to obtain a given hardness with short times at relatively high temperatures, and it would be convenient to be able to compute without tests the time required to produce this hardness. W. W. ANDERSON and G. E. KELLER*—We want to compliment the authors on this very thorough paper. It gives information which the coal industry has needed for some time. We hope that the additional information which the authors are collecting will he available shortly. The mixing and riffling procedure that was followed for experimental purposes is obviously not practical in routine float-and-sink testing because of the particle size degradation which would result in handling the sample so many times. It is important to obtain our tloat-and-sink fractions with a minimum amount of handling of material. A statement is made in the paper (p. 80) that "the variable most likely to affect the size of sample required to meet a given preassigned accuracy would be the state or degree of mixing of the coal." We agree that this is a large factor, but do not believe it is the most important factor. Our own opinion is that the most important single factor governing the total gross weight of sample that must be collected is the percentage of the weight of material in the smallest fraction that results from the screening and float-and-\ink operations. In other words, size of sample is governed by the total number of fractionations that must he made, and the distribution of material within the fractions. We can imagine a coal with perfect mixing, but with such a small amount of material in some float-and-sink fraction in one of the coarse sizes that a much larger sample would have to be taken than would be the case with very poorly mixed material, but with a large percentage of coarse material more evenly distributed in all float-and-sink fractions. Our own observation of many float-and-sink tests that we have run in our own organization on many types of coal is that the size of sample that must be used on fine size float and sink is governed more by the requirements for weight of material to be used for analysis in the laboratory than by weight of material necessary to obtain accurate float and sink percentage of weight values. In other words, it is our opinion that very small samples can be used for float-and-sink fractionation in the fine sizes, but that accurate analysis of the fractions will depend on a larger weight of sample being pulverized for the laboratory than is necessary to establish the float-and-sink distribution with respect to weight. A. L. BAILEY and B. A. LANDRY (authors' reply)—The authors thank Messrs. Anderson and Keller for their comments based on long experience. It is agreed that the involved mixing and riming technique used may be disadvantageous from the standpoint of degradation. Fortunately, the paper does point out that the extended riming was unrewarding in causing further mixing. Two large unknowns remain, however: (1) how much of the mixing from the presumed highly unmixed state in the bed was achieved toward the random state during blasting, loading, transportation, screening, and further transportation to the point where the gross sample was taken, and (2) how much of the mixing took place during the preparation described preceding riming. As has been pointed out by one of the authors.6 the degree of mixing has a very large effect on the size of sample required and there are still too few experimental data to show at what stage of coal handling most of the mixing occurs. The discussion states that the weight of material in a screened fraction, or in a float-and-sink fraction, is more important than the mixing factor. We do not believe that these factors are comparable in this instance inasmuch as our purpose was to give minimum sampling requirements to achieve a preassigned accuracy in the percentages of float, middlings, or sink, and nothing more. The gross sample had already been screened and no further division by screening was made or contemplated; also, it was not intended that the middlings and sink fractions would necessarily be adequate for percentage ash or other determination. In other words, the sample obtained by the method outlined is not intended for washability studies but only for preparation plant control. Further experimental work has been done, since the paper was prepared, to investigate the effect of increasingly larger top and bottom sizes on the variability of float, etc., of a double-screened coal from Western Pennsylvania. Results will be published and eventually attention is to be given to the preparation of sampling specifications. E. H. M. BADGER*—I should like the authors to explain more fully the fundamental assumptions on which their Eq 4 is based. The equation is of the form s2 = p(l - p) which is the usual expression for the (standard deviation)2 when the chance of finding a particular kind of particle in the sample is proportional to the number fraetion, p. But instead of the number fraction, the authors have used the weight fraction, WF/W. The chance of finding a particular kind of particle in the sample can only be proportional to the weight fraction, if the average ?eig?ts of all kinds of particles, that is, float, midlings, or sink, are the same. Surely a much more justifiable assumption would be that the average volumes of the particles are the same, and, if this is so, Eq 4 would not be true. This may be demonstrated as follows: Let be the weight fraction of float, middlings, or sink, dl the density of this fraction, and d2 the density of the rest of the coal. Then assuming that the average volumes of the pieces in the three classes are the same, the number fraction, p, is given by ? Particles of montmorillonite-type clays consist of plate-like clay crystals stacked face to face. Under certain conditions in a suspension, these particles disperse to individual platelets with the formation of diffuse double layers round each platelet. This action has a profound influence on the rheo-logical and other properties of the suspension. This paper describes a test for degree of dispersion and uses this test to correlate changes in dispersion with changes in viscosity and gel strength. The test is of practical value in determining and controlling dispersion in drilling muds. INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that the hydration and dispersion of clays, particularly those of the montmoril-loilite type, strongly influences the rheological and other properties of drilling muds, but little has been done to measure either of these phenomena under conditions that exist in drilling muds. The hydration of clays as such has been extensively studied by those interested in clay mineralogy, but in drilling muds it is to be expected that dispersion is at least as important a factor as hydration because of the much higher water-to-clay ratios and the very high degree of mechanical agitation. The term dispersion as generally applied to colloidal systems means the subdivision of large particles to small. Particles of montmorillonitic clays, however, consist of plate-like particles stacked face to face. Dispersion of these aggregates to individual platelets may be expected to have an unusually large influence on the properties of the suspension because of the shape factor, the enormous increase in specific surface, and the pronounced surface phenomena exhibited by the crystal surfaces. It is this form of dispersion that is particularly considered in this paper, -and the term degree of dispersion is used to imply the number of platelets per particle. The term aggregation is used to denote the opposite of dispersion, the association of individual platelets face to face to form stacks. It is important, as Garrison' has pointed out, to distinguish between the deflocculation-flocculation phenomenon and the dispersion-aggregation phenomenon. Flocculation of clay suspensions is characterized by the formation of voluminous sediments that are stable under quite high centrifugal fields. This indicates an edge to plate association of particles to form an open network type of structure, which obviously will have quite a different influence on the properties of the suspension than aggregation of the platelets face to face. The work described in this paper was primarily concerned with developing a test for degree of dispersion in clay suspensions and by means of this test to follow changes of dispersion brought about by addition of electrolytes and to show the influence of dispersion on the rheological properties. The Clay-Volume Test This test is based on the assumption that the greater the number of particles per unit weight of clay in a suspension the greater will be the volume of sediment when it is flocculated under standard conditions and centrifuged. After considerable experimentation the following procedure was established: 1 cc of the test mud vigorously shaken with 100 cc of 1-N NaCl in an ASTM oil centrifuge tube and centrifuged for five minutes in an International No. 2 centrifuge at 2,000 rpm. When drilling fluids of different solids content are being compared, the clay volume is expressed in cc per gram of clay solids, but generally changes in dispersion in a given mud are being compared and it is more convenient to report as cc of sediment. The test is strictly a comparative test, so that it is not necessary to adhere to the conditions specified above, e.g., with field muds a stronger flocculant such as Al2(SO4)3 may be preferable to NaCl.

Numerical calculations were made to determine the behavior of reservoirs with high-pressure drawdown and wide well spacing where the initial productivity is low and the wells are completed by hydraulic fracturing. The two-phase flow equations were solved for the flow into a single well. This well was assumed to be producing from a reservoir with hydraulically created horizontal fractures (four different systems with fractures were studied). For comparison purposes, additional two-phase flow calculations were made assuming a reservoir with uniform rock properties. The two-phase flow results were also compared with the conventional calculation methods, which do not include the effect of saturation gradients resulting from a simultaneous flow of oil and gas which are normal to this type reservoir. It was found that the conventional methods predict (1) a high and too optimistic value of ultimate recovery, (2) a high producing rate and a high reservoir pressure at a given oil recovery and (3) a low trend of gas-oil ratio with oil recovery. Included in the two-phase flow calculations were provisions to control the oil production rate by an allowable rate and, also, by a gas-oil ratio penalty rule. For the systems with hydraulic fractures, the producing rate was controlled by the gas-oil ratio penalty rule for most of the life. This is in contrast to the system with uniform rock properties which went "on decline" almost immediately. An unexpected characteristic of the systems which included fractures was the early rise in producing gas-oil ratio from 730 cu ft/bbl to approximately 1,200 cu ft/bbl, followed by a "leveling off" before the normally expected gas-oil ratio rise began. Additional features which are a result of hydraulic fracturing are (I) greater ultimate recovery, (2) higher average producing rates and (3) a lower average reservoir pressure at a given oil recovery. INTRODUCTION Some oil fields discovered during the past few years are producing from certain volumetric ally controlled reservoirs (often referred to as solution or internal gas- drive reservoirs) which are characterized by high-pressure drawdown at the wells. Since the available pressure drawdown at a well is limited by the static reservoir pressure and the producing rate is controlled by the available drawdown, wells completed in this type of reservoir usually produce at a rate less than the allowable from the time of completion. Because of this, this type of reservoir is referred to as a low productivity reservoir. Economic considerations require the use of wide well spacing and well stimulation by hydraulic fracturing to make commercial wells in this type of reservoir. Performance predictions for volumetrically controlled reservoirs have been made using a combination of two standard equations. 1. The "Schilthuis" or "Muskat" type material balance equation is used to relate the average reservoir pressure and the cumulative oil recovery. 2. The results from the material balance equation and the productivity factor as described by Pirson' are used to relate the cumulative recovery with producing rate and time. The material balance equation assumed uniform pressure and liquid saturation conditions throughout a reservoir. The steady-state radial flow formula allows for a pressure gradient toward a well but assumes uniform liquid saturation. These calculation methods are adequate for application to reservoirs wherein the drawdown at the well to realize satisfactory producing rates is small compared to the total pressure. In low productivity, volumetrically controlled reservoirs, the pressure drawdown at the well is large cornpared to the total pressure. Although a precise number cannot be given for the magnitude of a large pressure drawdown, values in excess of 1,000 psi would definitely be included. For practical considerations, this usually occurs when the formation flow capacity is less than about 100 md-ft. However, this limit of formation flow capacity will vary with the well producing rate. The low pressure in the neighborhood of the well which results from a high drawdown causes evolution of large volumes of gas. This causes the gas saturation to be higher near the well than at a greater distance—-hence, a non-uniform gas saturation. Also, the relationship between the relative permeability to oil (K/K) and gas saturation is nonlinear but decreases approximately in an exponential way with increases in gas saturation. Because of this, the following chain reaction is established.

The present paper represents a preliminary investigation of the ultimate structure of iron-bearing materials which have been subjected to heat treatment for the purpose of agglomerating the fines, or for chemical changes, or for both. Primarily, the object of this inquiry was to determine the relation of the microstructure of each of these materials to its specific susceptibility to the action in the blast-furnace. It is hoped that this small contribution will serve as a nucleus to a line of research that will throw some light upon the debated questions involved in blast-roasting. Thus far the investigation has been conducted along lines of analogy of known principles, rather than through the application of any well-defined system of microscopic petrography. This is obviously due to the fact that we are dealing with ma-terials which are the artificial products of a new art, rather than with the natural materials from which the essence of the pure science has been evolved. In the limited time allowed for this research, it has been conducted upon those materials the chemical content of which allows of their use commercially in the blast-furnace. The following microphotographs are arranged in the order of the degree of complete fusion to which the mass in question has been subjected, in effectively binding the particles together. A very notable fact here clearly demonstrated is that the degree of fusion to which the material has been subjected is inversely proportional to the reducibility of the product. The characteristic of the material under consideration to which reducibility is almost universally attributed call be progressively traced in the following arrangement, through the identity of the obvious microscopic constituent. Furthermore, the degree of fusion to which a bod? has been subjected is recorded in the presence of resultant products of fusion in that body. Such readjustment is generally apparent

INTRODUCTION This paper is a conceptual resume of engineering studies that have been evaluated by the Mine Department related to production planning over the next twenty-five years. These studies have been required principally because: a) The Rio Blanco Mine, property of CODELCO- CHILE, Andina Division, faces an operational problem due to heavy snowfall in winter which enters the surface subsidence area of the cave; later melts and filters into the broken ore creating a product that is difficult to transfer through the orepasses. The phenomenon is especially serious during the spring and has been increasing over the years. This element that complicates extraction will be controlled with the procedures proposed or others that may be determined in the future. b) The mine will increase production in 1985 by 40% . LOCATION The deposit is located in the central region of the Andes Cordillera, at an altitude of approximately 3,600 m above sea level, 50 km to the northeast of Santiago. The main camp is Saladillo (at 1,300 meters above sea level) located 30 km from the mine. Due to its location, the mine is subject to heavy snow storms during the year. On many occasions the road from Saladillo to the mine is closed because of storms and avalanches. For this reason the company has self-sufficient civil facilities near the mine to cover the needs and welfare of the working force. These housing facilities are connected to the mine by underground passages. For the same weather related reason the primary and secondary crushers, and the entire concentrator complex are located underground. GEOLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS Geology Based on the geologic model developed for the Rio Blanco deposit and comparing it with standard models pertaining to copper porphyries, it can be concluded that this deposit is part of the apical sector of a mega deposit and therefore the projections of the Xio Blanco cop per mine are very favorable, both in lateral area and depth. In order to confirm and evaluate these geo- logic features, an extensive drilling program was started at the Rio Blanco deposit. Diamond drill holes were drilled to depth as well as in the areas named "La Americana", "Don Luis" and "Elguin". The area explored by the drill program is 3 km long in a north-south direction and 1.5 km wide in an east-west direction. In some sections the drilling in depth reached the 2,300 m elevation mark. The lowermost level in the mine is at elevation 3,070 m. These new studies have permitted the recognition of the following lithologic units: Andesite Andesite Breccia Granodiorites, Rio Blanco and Cascada Granodiorite Breccia Quartzmonzonite Porphyry Monzodiorites and Latites Tourmaline Breccia Dacite Pipe and Rhyolite marginal ring. The mineralogical study permits the definition of three stages of hypogene and hydroterma1 alteration of importance with a time-altered sequence. These stages correspond to a late hydrothermal stage. p layers on n-type substrates of GaAs were prepared by difhsion of zinc into these substrates. Experimental details about the diffusion technique will be presented. It will be shown that inhomogeneity in the substrate doping level and crystal shucture defects cause nonplanarity in the junction plane. These nonplanarities give rise to high threshold current densities. From incremental sheet-conductivity measurements the zinc profile is derived. Data about surface concentration and gradient of the zinc concentration at the junction are presented. Finally, some results of laser diodes, which were made of wafers with extremely planar diffusion fronts, are discussed. ThE investigations reported here are part of a program concerned with the materials aspect in the fabrication of GaAs laser diodes. This includes studies of the influence of crystal defects introduced both during the growth of the crystal and as a consequence of subsequent diffusion. Compared with the progress made in the investigation of structure defects, for instance by X-ray microscopy in materials like silicon, no similar results are known so far for the case of GaAs. The further progress in laser diodes will depend very much upon our knowledge of these structure defects and subsequently upon our ability to avoid them. Laser diodes of GaAs had been made mostly by diffusing an acceptor impurity, normally zinc, into an n-type substrate. This procedure was found more convenient than the inverse one for various technical reasons. We will follow this line and restrict ourselves to zinc diffusion only in this paper. DIFFUSION TECHNIQUES AND EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL In order to set a refgrence for our experiments, we used a standard procedure for the diffusion runs. The diffusions were carried out in a sealed quartz tube for 2-1/2 hr at 850°C. One milligram zinc arsenide (ZnAsz) per cu cm of the tube volume served as zinc source. Under these conditions the junction depth was between 25 and 30 p. It is assumed, according to the investigations of the zinc arsenide system by V. Lyons and V. ilvestri,' that ZnAs2 dissociates completely at 850°C into ZnsAsz and Asg. Since there is a condensed phase of ZnsAs2 in the tube at 850°C, the partial pressure of zinc is controlled by the pressure of the arsenic formed by the dissociation of ZnAs2. Due to the fact that the zinc partial pressure resulting from the dissociation of ZnsAsz is only a weak function of the partial pressure of arsenic, the amount of the initial ZnAs2 is not very critical. Experimentally, we found that the junction depth, as well as the surface concentration, was practically the same, if the ingots of ZnAs2 varied between 0.2 and 5.0 mg per cu cm. The wafers were oriented with the main faces in (100). Surface damage due to cutting and lapping was removed by a chemical-etch treatment in a rotating beaker (etch solution: HzSOr, H202, and HzO in a ratio 3:l:l). The GaAs substrate material was n type and doped with tellurium, selenium, silicon, or germanium. It was grown by means of horizontal or Czochralski techniques. (written discussion).-The experience of users of pulverized fuel in metallurgical work, particularly for open-hearth furnaces, has demonstrated that high ash and sulfur in pulverized fuel are a detriment, the sulfur in the coal entering into the finished product; hence, in this class of work it is extremely important, when pulverized coal is to be used, that the coal be selected with care, and only those having low percentages of sulfur be used, in combination with proper means for combustion. I have found that no general statement can be made as to the cost of pulverized coal, each installation being an individual engineering problem and necessitating a varying capital expenditure; as each installation has its own power cost, the actual cost of pulverizing varies between wide margins. It has been found that no general rule can he laid down as to either fineness or dryness; for some uses a wide range is permissible in both factors, while some classes of fuel require different treatment from others. Anthracite, coke breeze, and lignite ash will, under certain conditions, form slag, the melting point of the ash from fuel of this character being practically the same as of that from bituminous coal; furnace temperatures above the melting point of ash must therefore cause the formation of slag. However, it should he noted that furnace temperatures attainable with this class of fuel are not usually so high as those from bituminous coal, which probably explains the statement that the former do not slag. In a well designed furnace, temperatures above 2250° F. (1235° C.) will be obtained with that class of fuel, and slags will be formed. Too much attention apparently has been centered on high CO2 contents of stack gases. A high percentage of C02 is frequently obtained at the expense of the brickwork, the furnace temperature being increased by diminishing the excess air; a high percentage of C02 thus simply means a small proportion of 02.

In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats; Donetskugol and Tulaugol. In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting and control, explosion suppression and control measures, and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miners' attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. It would be helpful to briefly review Soviet coal production statistics for comparison purposes with the U.S., and for the purpose of referencing some of the delegation findings mentioned in this report. For an excellent, comprehensive picture of Soviet coal production and other related fuel statistics, the reader is referred to Strishkov's, et d. report.1 Strishkov's estimates agree with the numbers given us by Coal Ministry officials except in clean coal tonnage. The figures of 604 million mt of clean coal out of a total production of 655 tons raw coal in 1972 is much higher than Strishkov's estimate of 375 million mt clean coal.
